Title: How big was the Wolves defence.
Post by: The Swan on March 21, 2017, 08:23:10 PM
The back four of the Wolves team must have been the biggest that have ever played at Craven Cottage.
We had one or two chances early in the game but came to nothing.
We just did not have the height in our team to get past them.
How I wished we still had Matt Smith to bring on as sub.
I know a lot of Fulham fans were glad to see the back of Smith, but we needed a plan B on Saturday.
The only other option we had on Saturday was to bring on Chris Martin.
Following what happened when Martin came on against Blackburn on  Tuesday I can see why Jokanovic did not want to bring him on.
We still need a plan B.

Martin lost possession, it was right in front of me,and to be honest not sure he had much of an outlet, there were not too many players rushing to him that I could see, Cairney seemed to spend a good part of the game giving the ball away, but of course he was just having an off day.

A friend is a Wolves ST holder and was there on Saturday.  He claims this was Wolves best performance of the season anf highlighted that Lambert had clearly done his homework on Fulham's weaknesses.  I think I agree.

Creeping anxiety cost us dear in the last two games not the size of the back four.  Anxiety starts when what you normally do stops working and instead of switching tactics we tried harder and harder to do the same things simply increasing our anxiety levels.   A little calmness, patience and a thoughtfully modest but strategic change would have made a lot of difference.  Instead we made the same mistakes in defence we have been making all season.   We were outdone by our own failures.

If they're big then they're slow. We have the pace to expose this so should've been an advantage. We clearly lack a bit of composure we need the leaders to step up, surely this is why we still have Parker.

That Wolves defence was not just good in the air they were quick and strong in the . tackle, very well organised and could initiate breaks with good early balls forward.
We never really bothered them with our slow short passing tactics, quicker direct balls to our pacey wide players would have helped.

The answer to the original question is:  big but not quite as big as it would have been if 6'4" Dominic Iorfa had been selected at full back.  He played a blinder in last years fixture.

Paul Lambert is a clever and fiercely competitive.  Expect Wolves to do well next year.
