On-loan Fulham man Oliver Norwood believes Northern Ireland were 'shafted' by penalty decision

Northern Ireland failed to qualify for the World Cup after a 1-0 aggregate defeat to Switzerland, who qualified courtesy of a dubious penalty decision

On-loan Fulham man believes Northern Ireland were "shafted" by the controversial penalty decision in their first leg that cost them a place in the World Cup.

Romanian referee Ovidiu Hategan awarded Switzerland a penalty in the first leg when he penalised Corry Evans for a handball, despite it being the wrong call, which saw Northern Ireland failed to qualify after losing the first leg 1-0 and drawing 0-0 in Switzerland.

Despite Norwood being frustrated at the referee, the midfielder hopes that his side put in a performance that his country could be proud of.

He said: "Shafted is the only word for it. I will think about the penalty decision for years to come as it's the only goal between the two sides and it's knocked us out.

"We can stand here and complain all night, but I hope we put in a performance that everyone in Northern Ireland is proud of. We left everything out there tonight and it just wasn't to be.

"It's disappointing that these decisions cost us a place in the World Cup. We were angered, upset and disappointed with what happened in Belfast. Tonight I feel a few things went against us and as players we have to be careful about what we say.

"We are devastated as a squad, but I hope we stick together.

"It's a great bunch of lads and it is a pleasure to play for Northern Ireland. Hopefully, all the players will remain available for one more campaign."

Denis Odoi believes Fulham have been found out by other sides, but insists it's no excuse for poor form

Slavisa Jokanovic's side are on a run of five games without a win and Odoi thinks that his side just aren't at the same level as they were last year

Denis Odoi believes that teams may have started to figure out the way Fulham like to play football, but insists that is no excuse for their poor form.

Slavisa Jokanovic's side headed into the international break without a win in five games, a run that included three losses and two draws, conceding nine and scoring just four.

It hasn't been the season anyone associated with the club was hoping for, and instead of promotion, talk has now turned to what exactly is going wrong with one of the early favourites.

Odoi has his own view, and he thinks that other teams are now finding out how to play against his side, but he will not use that as an excuse for not being at the same level as last season.

He said: "Everybody wants to always play their best, we wanted to play an even better season than last year but other teams have maybe adapted themselves to our kind of play.

"Last year it was fairly new, because the gaffer wasn't there for long and was in a battle against relegation, maybe now they know more about our way of playing but that shouldn't be an excuse.

"We're just not on the same level, our passing game isn't up to the same level, attacking-wise we aren't at the same level and defensively it's too easy."

Fulham are back in league action on Saturday against Derby County after the international break, and Odoi reckons it could've come at the right time for the side.

He added: "I think maybe yes, because obviously the morale isn't too high and we've had two weeks to reflect on the situation and try and solve the problem and have a new go in November and start it with a positive note."

The best and worst moments, top player and top team played - Fulham's season so far

We've taken a look at the season to date for Slavisa Jokanovic's Fulham side

It's not been a season of too many positives so far - four wins in Fulham's 16 games hasn't been good enough and everyone at the club knows that.

With the long-haul that is Christmas just ahead of us, we've taken a look back at the season so far for Slavisa Jokanovic's side and picked some of the standouts, for better and for worse.

Best moment for Fulham
There really haven't been too many for Fulham this season, which says a lot about how the side have been playing, but for me I think I'd pick the 2-1 win at QPR back in September.

The side hadn't really been playing well and they went to Loftus Road and battled to get the three points - add to it the fact that Ian Holloway's side hadn't lost at home (and haven't since that game) and you can see what a big three points they were.

Bragging rights and a victory under the lights on the Sky cameras - what could be better?

Worst moment
There's been a few, but for me it had to be after the final whistle against Wolves.

Five games without a win and the league leaders made the tie look like a training game, Fulham's morale was shot to pieces and there was absolutely no fight in the side at all.

What makes it that little bit worse is that it was in front of the Sky cameras and the entire country could see just how down in the dumps Fulham are.

The defeat summed up what's gone with the Cottagers this season for me.

Surprise package
The surprise package from the season so far has to be Denis Odoi and his performances at centre back.

Who would've thought at the start of the season that the right back, who is under six foot and possesses a bagful of tricks, would shine in a position that is usually reserved for big, tall defenders.

His performances against Reading and Leeds in that position were some of the better defensive ones this season from the side, while he looked equally at home there against Wolves in place of Tomas Kalas.

Perhaps this is something we'll see more of going forward?

Biggest disappointment
The season in general.

There were such high hopes for Fulham, and after the way they finished the campaign last time who could blame people for tipping the side to win the league?

But that Fulham just haven't appeared yet and it's been a thoroughly disappointing season in general, from the way they've been defending to the lack of creativity and killer instinct in front of goal.

Best Fulham player
Kevin McDonald - by a country mile.

The vice-captain has carried on his form from last season and had been a maverick in front of that back four once again in this campaign.

His consistency has been excellent and I dread to think how Fulham would be doing had he not been in the side.

Best opponent
I haven't been overly impressed with any of the teams Fulham have faced yet this season in all honesty, even leaders Wolves who never got out of second gear.

If I had to pick one, it would be Preston - their pressing game was fantastic and they really made Fulham panic on the ball, Jokanovic's side didn't know what him them.

They also don't have any standout players, but each and every one of them play for one another and play as a unit, which makes them dangerous.

Best opposition player
Diogo Jota of Wolves - he is a class above this division and despite not having the best of games for Wolves, you could see just how good he is.

I'm still not quite sure how Wolves have managed to get him, but him and Ruben Neves are two players that are guaranteed to get you promoted to the Premier League.

Elsewhere, I thought Sean Maguire looked very good for Preston before he came off injured, but I may be biased as he's Irish and from Cork.

Where will Fulham be on New Year's Day?
Unfortunately, I still don't think the side will be pushing the Play-off places come the turn of the year, but Millwall, Birmingham and Sunderland present opportunities for wins and confidence boosters.

There's also the derby with Brentford where form goes out of the window - a win against them at Griffin Park could be a huge boost to morale.

Fulham predicted to finish as the Championship's average team according to Soccer Power Index ratings

Prediction website FiveThirtyEight.com has predicted how Fulham's season will end up - and it's bang average

Fulham are being predicted to finish as the Championship's bang average side, according to prediction stats website FiveThirtyEight.com.

Using forecasts and Soccer Power Index (SPI) ratings, the team at FiveThirtyEight.com have predicted Fulham to finish in 13th place in the Championship this season with a points tally of just 62 points.

That's 18 less than they achieved last season when they finished in the Play-off places.

As a result, Fulham have been given a 12% chance of reaching the end of season showpiece at this stage of the season based on their SPI, with a 6% chance of being promoted and a <1% of being crowned Champions.

They predict that Fulham will win 15.7, draw 15 and lose 15.3 games (obviously you can't have a .1 of a win but we're working with it in terms of data here), finishing on +2 goal difference.

FiveThirtyEight predicts that Wolves, Cardiff, Sheffield United, Middlesbrough, Bristol City, Aston Villa, Derby, Brentford, Sheffield Wednesday, Nottingham Forest, Norwich and Leeds will all finish above Slavisa Jokanovic's side this season.

Looking ahead, however, they believe that Fulham are favourites heading into the game with Derby on Saturday and predict they have a 41% chance of winning, compared to Derby's 32% - with the draw given a possibility rating of 27%.

Compare that to the game with Sheffield United, who are predicted to have a 45% chance of beating Fulham next week, while Fulham are only given a 28% chance, with the draw at 27%.

Liverpool loanee Sheyi Ojo back in training after dislocating his shoulder against QPR

The loanee took to Twitter to announce he was 'feeling good' after his first training session back at the club

Liverpool loanee Sheyi Ojo is back in training with Fulham after dislocating his shoulder against QPR in their 2-1 victory back in September.

The 20-year-old joined the club on loan back in the summer and was becoming a regular in Slavisa Jokanovic's side before sustaining the injury as a result of a challenge where he landed awkwardly in the QPR box.

He's been missing since but today the Liverpool took to Twitter to announce he has undergone his first training session since the injury - with Jokanovic expecting him to feature again in December, along with Chelsea loanee Lucas Piazon who is recovering from a broken leg.

Ojo has made seven appearances for Fulham this season, six of those coming in the league, and was fast becoming a regular fixture in the Whites' attacking options.

Fulham vs Derby: Stats point to Craven Cottage stalemate

Odds: Fulham 5/4, Draw 11/5, Derby 11/5

Kick Off: 1730, 18/11/2017

Stadium: Craven Cottage

TV: Sky Sports

Fulham will have been glad of the international break to regroup following a five-match winless run and may settle for a solid draw with Derby now returning to action.

In the same period, the Rams secured four straight Championship wins before suffering a blip against Reading, so the visitors should be in good spirits.

These teams have shared the spoils at Craven Cottage for the last two seasons and 11/5 that happens again appeals for our Fulham vs Derby betting predictions.

A Look At Fulham's Betting Odds
Fulham were favourites for promotion going into last term's play-offs but just two points from five fixtures has left them down in 17th place this season.

The Cottagers had their moments in a 2-0 loss at Wolves, but were fortunate to avoid conceding more goals at Molineux.

"For a month now, we have not been at the right level," admitted Slavisa Jokanovic. "We must fight all together and show more quality. If not, then we are in trouble."

Jokanovic's side have already had five draws from eight home games and four of those were 1-1, so 11/2 for a repeat of that scoreline stands out from the Fulham vs Derby odds.

A Look At Derby County's Betting Odds
Derby went into this campaign with most pundits predicting another mid-table finish, so seventh spot is a decent effort at this stage.

An early injury to centre-half Richard Keogh seemed to affect the Rams when they went down 4-2 to the Royals, although Gary Rowett admitted: "We looked like there was no real spark."

However, a fortnight off should have helped to get that setback out of the system and we're hoping to see the spirit of a previous seven-match unbeaten run return.

We're completing our Fulham vs Derby betting tips by taking 15/4 for the scores to be level at half-time and full-time.

Additional stats

Last result:

Wolves 2-0 FULHAM

DERBY 2-4 Reading – Johnny Russell, Chris Martin

Head-to-head: Derby 4-2 Fulham, Fulham 2-2 Derby, Fulham 1-1 Derby, Derby 2-0 Fulham, Fulham 2-0 Derby, Fulham 2-5 Derby

Spy in the camp: Derby County striker Chris Martin could be in for a rough reception on Fulham return

We get the inside track on the Rams' next opponents ahead of Saturday's clash at Craven Cottage

Derby County resume their Sky Bet Championship campaign on Saturday when they take on Fulham at Craven Cottage (5.30pm).

The Rams return to action following the international break, having seen their seven-match unbeaten run ended by a 4-2 home defeat to Reading last time out.

That result left Gary Rowett's men just outside the play-off zone, though with a game in hand on the teams above them.

Fulham are currently 17th in the table, having reached the play-offs last season.

Ahead of this weekend's game, we got the inside track on Derby's opponents from GetWestLondon's Ryan O'Donovan...

What have you made of Fulham's start to the season?

It's not been the start anyone at the club was expecting - after finishing last season as, arguably, the best side in the division expectations were to continue that form into this season and go one better.

It's not been the case, and the free-scoring Fulham of last season hasn't appeared yet, the side are struggling to score goals and without Tom Cairney, there doesn't seem to be any creativity in the midfield.

Is head coach Slavisa Jokanovic under pressure, considering what the team did last season, or do you feel he will be given more time?

I think he's under a bit of pressure but his feats last season can't be ignored.

Last campaign was Slavisa Jokanovic's first full season at the club after he guided them to safety the season before, and you could see what his influence was on the pitch.

Free flowing, passing and exciting football is what he brought to the club, and despite not playing well this time out his side are still sticking to that philosophy.

There's been a lot of off-the-field drama at the club in recent weeks and I think that coming into the open will give the manager the time he needs to turn things around.

Who do you think will be Fulham's key men against Derby?

It's hard to pick one out of this side but if Tom Cairney is fit for the game then he will definitely be the key man.

Despite playing the season mostly injured and not getting out of second gear, the difference he makes to the side is clear to see - if Fulham get a fully fit Cairney back after the international break we could see a different team completely.

Are there any Fulham players currently out injured or suspended? Or anyone coming back?

Unfortunately for Fulham, stand-out performer Kevin McDonald is suspended after picking up his fifth yellow in the game with Wolves, while long-term absentees Lucas Piazon and Sheyi Ojo won't be available for the game.

Chris Martin in action for Fulham last season

What sort of reception is Chris Martin likely to get from the fans on his return to Craven Cottage?

Not a very good, I imagine. Fans at the club still remember his reported refusal to play for the team at Reading (when Derby tried, unsuccessfully to recall him from his loan) and despite the manager having forgiven him, I don't think fans ever did, so I reckon he will be in a for rough reception at the Cottage.

Finally, how do you see the game going? Score prediction?

Fulham have been so poor recently, especially at home, that I think this will be another struggle for the side, so I'm going to have to say a 2-1 Derby victory.
