Premier League's next great managers: Slaviša Jokanović

It had been a downward spiral for Fulham ever since the 2010 Europa League final.

The run to the final in Hamburg was stuff of dreams, and although they lost to Atlético Madrid, it was a season that will long live in the memory of any Whites fans, with Roy Hodgson always given a hero's welcome at Craven Cottage.

It went wrong soon after. Mark Hughes, Martin Jol and René Meulensteen all took the reins of the side by the Thames, each of whom was slightly worse than their predecessor. But it was under Felix Magath's guidance that the club eventually slid out of the Premier League and into the Championship in 2014.

Despite relegation the club stuck with the German, who talked about leading them back into the top flight at the first attempt. He even joked that wantaway striker Kostas Mitroglou could be playing Champions League football in two seasons time if he stayed at Craven Cottage.

Unsurprisingly the man who told Brede Hangeland to rub cheese on his leg and call his mother to help him recover from a muscle injury didn't last long. He was sacked with Fulham bottom of the Championship after seven games, with just one point.

That set the tone for the Whites in the second division of English football – it was all about struggle.

Magath's seven months in charge set the club back years, and while his replacement Kit Symons steadied the ship, he wasn't able to take them anywhere near the top half and was sacked in early November 2015.

Fulham took nearly two months to replace him, eventually appointing Slaviša Jokanović at the end of December of that year.

"While the search was time-consuming and painstaking at times, I knew that when the process was complete that Fulham would have the best man possible for this opportunity and challenge," said chairman Shahid Khan at the time.

Since arriving at Craven Cottage, he has slowly revolutionised the Whites from relegation candidates to promotion pushers.

Given his pedigree in previous jobs, what the former midfielder has achieved is no surprise.

Jokanović's playing career saw him spend seven years in La Liga with three different clubs, appearing in 208 matches and scoring 31 goals, mainly for Tenerife. He joined Chelsea towards the end of his career, as well as representing Yugoslavia at the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000.

But it's been in his managerial career where he has really shone.

He started off at Partizan Belgrade, winning the double in both 2008 and 2009. But in September 2009 he left the post by mutual consent – perhaps the first sign that he may not always see eye-to-eye with the hierarchy at the club he works at.

It took the Serbian a while to reappear in management, and it was a surprise when he ended up in Thailand in February 2012, taking Muangthong United to their third Thai Premier League title and going unbeaten in the process.

Brief spells at Levski Sofia and Hércules then followed, before he returned to England with Watford.

When he took over at Vicarage Road in October 2014, he was the Hornets' fourth coach in five weeks. Despite seemingly coming into chaos, he overcame a bad start to lead them to the Premier League with a game to spare.

His gruff tone and often serious manner can make him a nightmare for journalists who want quotes, but when he feels like it, he can come out with some real corkers.

While at Watford he declared: "This job is not for pussies (weak people), it is a job for real men."

Despite his success at Vicarage Road, he failed to agree a new deal with the Hornets and left that summer, with Quique Sánchez Flores being the man the Pozzos decided to take them into the top flight of English football.

Just a few weeks after departing Watford, he was appointed Maccabi Tel Aviv head coach, and continued his impressive managerial record, taking them into the Champions League group stage for the first time in 11 years after victory over Basel.

And after six months in Israel, he once again returned to England with Fulham.

His first season was about keeping the Whites up. After having no manager for two months, the club was in disarray and it was hard for Jokanović to properly make his mark with Fulham finishing 20th.

When they lost top scorers Moussa Dembélé and Ross McCormack in the summer of 2016, they were among the bookmakers' favourites to go down. But the Serbian came into his own and the Whites have been transformed.

They finished sixth last season, losing to Reading in the playoff semi finals. But Fulham could go one better in 2017/18 and are in contention of finishing second in the Championship after an incredible unbeaten run stretching from December to April.

The Serbian has employed a 4-3-3 to much success, with the Whites making the most passes and having the most possession and best passing accuracy over the past two seasons.

Fulham simply pass their opposition off the pitch. They know when to play the ball at the back and when to break at lightning pace.

He has seen the strengths in his squad and built around them. When Jokanović arrived Tom Cairney was often being used as a winger by Symons. Now he's been transformed into one of the best central midfielders in the league, dominating the game and dictating the tempo.

Ryan Fredericks is one of the quickest players in the division and he and fellow full-back, January loan signing Matt Targett, are crucial to the Fulham's attacks. They push forward with Cairney, Stefan Johansen and Kevin McDonald often picking them out in wide positions from the middle of the pitch.

When Antonio Conte arrived a few miles down the road at Jokanović's old club Chelsea two summers ago, he declared himself a tailor. The Serbian isn't too different. He adapts to what he thinks is best for the side.

"I always played with two strikers at Watford," he told The Independent. "Because my best players were strikers: Troy Deeney, Odion Ighalo, Matěj Vydra and Fernando Forestieri. The team was really clinical."

But this Fulham team is different, more about possession and controlling the midfield.

"With these players I have in my hand right now, we take the decision to play in this way," he added. "Because I believe we are more safe with the ball than we are without it. We believe we can dominate the opposition with the ball.

"We are not the strongest, tallest team in the Championship. We miss the set pieces, we need to win some points in this situation, but we don't do it."

Despite that his time at Fulham hasn't been plain sailing. He's fallen out with the board on numerous occasions over their transfer policy.

Fulham's director of statistical research Craig Kline had too much say over arrivals at Craven Cottage. He was a close friend of director of football operations Tony Khan and was bizarrely given control of transfer policy.

Using his own algorithms, Kline pulled the plug on smart loan signings – such as Andreas Pereira – only to make bad ones, much to Jokanović's frustration.

Even despite the American leaving in November, the Fulham boss told the board to back him or sack him in January.

They decided to do the latter and brought in three players he wanted; Cyrus Christie, Targett and Aleksandar Mitrović. Since then the Whites haven't lost.

Given how he's able to adapt and have success at nearly every club he's been at, it's no surprise to see bigger sides than Fulham interested in Jokanović, even if he can go public after a falling out with the board.

He's been heavily linked with West Ham United in the last 12 months, while there has also been talk of a sensational return to Chelsea when they finally get rid of Conte.

It would be a massive surprise to see Roman Abramovich appoint a manager from the second tier of English football though.

That's not to say the Serbian won't be managing in the Premier League next year. He will hope it will be with Fulham, but should they fall just short, it would be no surprise to see Jokanović move into the top flight.

The 49-year-old's career trajectory so far suggests he'll fly when he gets the chance, and it may not be too long before a move to a club like Chelsea doesn't sound so ridiculous.

Slavisa Jokanovic explains his decision to sub off Neeskens Kebano in 1-1 draw with Brentford

The winger was subbed on and then subbed off for Cyrus Christie, but Jokanovic has stood by his decision

Slavisa Jokanovic says he made the decision to sub Neeskens Kebano on and then back off again to help the team - and has stuck by it.

Kebano was introduced for Lucas Piazon in the second half, but was subbed back off after Fulham had taken the lead through an Aleksandar Mitrovic strike for Cyrus Christie as they looked to protect their lead.

However, Brentford equalised in the dying moments of the game through Neal Maupay's header which meant the Whites dropped out of the automatic promotion places.

It was a sub that raised questions from the fans as to why an attacking player was brought off for a defensive one when a second goal would've killed the tie, but Jokanovic has explained his reasoning behind the sub and stood by his decision.

He said: "I need players to be ready to die on the pitch, I need more effort, interpret the situation and be enough experienced to interpret the situation and be ready for finding the way to kill the game.

"My job is to make a decision, I made a decision to try help the team and that's it.

"I cannot explain in different way."

Only Mo Salah ahead of Aleksandar Mitrovic when it comes to goals in last 10 weeks

No Championship player has scored as many league goals as Aleksandar Mitrovic in the last 10 weeks and indeed only Mo Salah in the entire top two divisions has bested him.

The Liverpool genius scoring against Bournemouth and making it 11 goals since 3 February 2018, which was the day Mitrovic made his first appearance for Fulham.

In fact the Newcastle loan striker's first two games were sub appearances and since then he has started 12 Championship matches as well.

In his 10 weeks at Fulham, Mitro has scored 10 goals in total, those goals coming in his last 11 matches.

In the Championship, Patrick Bamford at Middlesbrough is next best with nine goals since 3 February, followed by Swansea loan striker Oliver McBurnie scoring eight for Barnsley.

Yesterday's was a brilliant left foot curling finish from outside the box for Aleksandar Mitrovic, it put Fulham in the lead but they conceded a last gasp Brentford equaliser, meaning they slip to third behind Cardiff as Wolves were automatically promoted.

BBC Sport:

'Goal! Fulham 1, Brentford 0.

Aleksandar Mitrovic (Fulham) left footed shot from outside the box to the bottom left corner.'

Elsewhere, Newcastle's Ivan Toney scored the only goal of the game to put Scunthorpe fifth in League One, his 10th goal of the season out on loan.

As for Adam Armstrong, he featured in a goalless draw for Blackburn but they are second on goal difference and five points ahead of third place Shrewsbury, who do have a game in hand.

Mitrovic' latest goal also means he has scored more league goals this season than any other Newcastle player, including loan spells.

Newcastle players with most goals so far this season:

11 Aleksandar Mitrovic (1 Newcastle United and 10 Fulham)

(3 Championship matches remain, plus potential play-off games)

10 Adam Armstrong (1 Bolton and 9 Blackburn)

(4 League One matches remain, plus potential play-off games)

10 Ivan Toney (4 Wigan 6 Scunthorpe)

(4 League One matches remain, plus potential play-off games)

7 Sean Longstaff (7 Blackpool)

(3 League One matches remain, plus potential play-off games)

5 Dwight Gayle

(6 Premier League matches remain)

4 Joselu

(6 Premier League matches remain)

4 Ayoze Perez

(6 Premier League matches remain)

Fulham response to derby day draw will be telling in promotion race

The Whites are a point off 2nd place Cardiff, having played one more game.

Although Fulham's four-month unbeaten run continued on Saturday afternoon, a late goal conceded to Brentford made the 1-1 draw feel like a loss.

The Whites have just three games remaining in the Championship season, and a gutsy response is needed in order to keep their promotion push alive.

Fulham were surprisingly nervy and flat against the Bees, and in all truth, the draw flattered the home side.

Brentford were denied what appeared to be a clear penalty, had a number of good chances marginally called offside, and harassed the Whites all match.

Fulham went ahead through talisman Aleksandar Mitrovic with just twenty minutes to go but failed to kill off the game, allowing for pressure to build and Brentford to strike late on.

The 94th-minute equaliser brought a sickening feeling to Craven Cottage that had not been felt for many a month, but there is no time for Fulham to languish in disappointment.

Three cup finals await, and if the Whites are to stand any chance of automatic promotion, they must win all three. Millwall, Sunderland, and Birmingham City beckon for the Cottagers; their season truly rests on these final league matches.

Not only is it important to end the season strong in order to keep the pressure on Cardiff, Fulham must also keep up momentum if they are to finish outside the top two. If they can't close the gap to the Bluebirds in second, a strong run going into the play-offs will be imperative for confidence.

Nonetheless, all hope is not lost for automatic promotion just yet. If Fulham win all three of their remaining matches, they will go up in second, if Cardiff draw two and win two.

Cardiff still have to travel to play-off chasing Derby County in their game in hand and, although their other three matches are against teams in the bottom eight, Hull City away will be a tough task.

The Tigers have recently drawn Wolves and Aston Villa, as well as thrashing Burton 5-0 and QPR 4-0. If Hull and Derby can muster a result against Cardiff, then Fulham will control second place.

This dream is still a long way off. The Whites need to show resolve and steel in bouncing back from their derby day heartbreak; their promotion hopes depend on it.

Jokanovic: No time for crying as Fulham look to bounce back after Brentford disappointment

Jokanovic hasn't got time to feel sorry for the dropped points and is focused solely on preparing the side for the Millwall test

Slavisa Jokanovic has said there is no time for Fulham to cry after dropping points to Brentford and that they must focus on bouncing back against Millwall.

It looked like the Whites would take all the spoils from a thoroughly entertaining west London derby when Aleksandar Mitrovic's first-time effort curled round Dan Bentley and into the Bees goal.

But it wasn't to be as Neal Maupay's last minute header not only saw Jokanovic's side drop two points, but also saw them drop out of the automatic promotion places.

It was bitterly disappointing, but Jokanovic has said there is no time for the side to cry over the result and that they're sole focus is bouncing back against Millwall on Friday night in another London derby.

He said: "No I am not depressed man, I am positive man, I am really happy at how my team pushed second half.

"We created problems, Brentford played really good football too, they are four points from play-offs, it's normal they will push hard for one of the less chances they will be in position for play-off.

"Really I am not worried, I am thinking in different way, I don't have time for crying or complaining, I only have time to support my team and to make it through recovery and push hard to prepare for next game ahead of us."

4 potential Fulham midfield signings that are a huge upgrade on McDonald

Fulham are right in the hunt for a Premier League return, with Slavisa Jokanovic's side in sensational form since the turn of the year.

The Cottagers are fighting for the second automatic promotion spot in the Sky Bet Championship, after an incredible run of form.

Of course, securing automatic promotion will be all that's on Jokanovic's mind right now, but he will be relaxed enough in knowing that his Fulham side have the play-offs to fall back on if their quest for the top-two fails.

The squad at Craven Cottage is exceptional, with Fulham having a midfield unit to envy.

Arguably, Tom Cairney, Stefan Johansen and Kevin McDonald are the most complete trio in the division, offering size, craft and defensive ability.

However, going into a potential Premier League campaign next year, Jokanovic will want to improve his options, you'd imagine.

With that in mind, we at FLW take a look at FOUR players we believe would be an upgrade on McDonald...

Danny Drinkwater

Drinkwater's spell with Chelsea has been a difficult one, with the midfielder far from a regular at Stamford Bridge.

Jokanovic could offer the former Premier League champion a route out of Chelsea and a key role at the Cottage.

Gareth Barry

In terms of age, McDonald is better for Fulham than Barry.

However, what the ex-England international would bring is experience, which would be useful to Fulham should they return to the Premier League.

Romain Saiss

Saiss has been instrumental for Wolves this season, helping them dominate the Championship.

However, if Wolves undergo big changes in personnel again in the summer, the midfielder could well be on the move.

He'd be an upgrade on McDonald.

Jonjo Shelvey

Shelvey is slightly different to McDonald, but in terms of ability, he would be a better option in a midfield three.

The Newcastle United man perhaps lacks McDonald's defensive awareness, but they way Jokanovic likes to play, Shelvey would be perfect.

'Top class' Ryan Sessegnon should be proud to be nominated alongside Spurs and City stars

Slavisa Jokanovic believes Sessegnon will be competing for the PFA Young Player of the Year award for the next seven years

Ryan Sessegnon should be proud to be named alongside 'top class' players like Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling in the PFA Young Player of the Year nominations, according to Slavisa Jokanovic.

The Fulham man made history by becoming the first player outside of the Premier League to be nominated for the award after his 14 goals this season has made him the side's top goal scorer.

Dele Alli is the current holder of the award, and while Sterling is amongst the favourites after the season he has had for Champions-elect Manchester City, Jokanovic is tipping Sessegnon to be nominated for the award for the next seven years as his career continues on an upward trijectory.

He said: "It's fantastic, he is top class, other players who are nominated are top class too and he must be personally satisfied and proud.

"We will see if he will win the award.

"Sessegnon will be in this position for the next seven years if he doesn't win this time.

"Compare that with these players isn't so easy, but being nominated with these players, must make him proud.

"I remember he was nominated for some awards last season and he didn't win and win this year.

"I don't know who will win but he will have seven years more at least for this award."

Tim Ream: Fulham have the mental strength to deal with Brentford result and continue form

A last-minute equaliser denies the Whites of all three points - but Ream thinks the side have the mental robustness to dust themselves off and get a result at Millwall

Tim Ream thinks the Brentford draw is a tough one to take, but thinks Fulham have shown they have the mental robustness to deal with the result and dust themselves down.

Despite the last-second Neal Maupay goal and dropping out of the automatic promotion places, the draw meant that the Whites made it 21 games unbeaten - something the American centre back believes is nothing to be scoffed out.

That said, Saturday was hard to take.

When the 30-year-old was asked whether the result felt like a loss, he simply replied: "Yes."

That summed up the feeling from the Fulham camp, who had taken the lead through Aleksandar Mitrovic and looked like heading back into second place.

Next up for the side is the tough prospect of taking on Millwall, who themselves are currently on an 18-game unbeaten streak, at the Den as Slavisa Jokanovic's men look to bounce back and continue the chase for second.

And with so much riding on Friday night at the Den, Ream knows Fulham must win.

He said: "There's no two ways about it, we know what the situation is and know that starting with Millwall, we have to win.

"There's no getting around that.

"It's tough to take, we've drawn games in this run so it's a game we now need to put behind us and get ready for Millwall.

"I think we've shown a mental toughness through the entire run, just because we concede in the 94th minute doesn't mean we're not mentally tough.

"It's just a matter of dusting ourselves down and going again."

There's a belief that Fulham are one of the best sides in the division, between pundits, fans and managers alike.

However, as we saw last season, there's a difference between being called one of the best sides and then getting your rewards for it.

Most people thought that the Whites would get promoted last season when they turned on the style, but it wasn't to be as they crashed out of the play-offs to Reading.

And despite many saying nice things about Fulham, Ream insists they're just words to him.

"They're just words, people can say what they want to say at the end of the day," he added.

"People are saying things about Cardiff, and again, does it matter? It's about results, it's a results driven business and we're in it to win it.

"We've proved the past couple of games we don't have to play the best or turn on the style as much as we would like, and we haven't the last three or four games, but we've still ground out wins and today was just one of those days."

(Image: Paul Burgman)

If it was to be the play-offs again for the Cottagers, the early season form, where Fulham went an entire month without a win, will be looked at as one of the reasons why second eluded them.

Ream agrees that the side will look back at certain results during the campaign and be disappointed with how they went, but thinks the side know they have a second chance of promotion should they miss out on second.

He added: "I wouldn't call it a disappointment, we dug ourselves a hole in the first part of the season.

"21 games is nothing to scoff at, if we make automatic then great, we know that we have the play-offs to prepare for if, for whatever reason, we miss out on the second spot.

"I think we'll look back on certain results and be disappointed, but you can't be disappointed until all the games are finished."

Ryan Sessegnon: Fulham winger named Championship Player of the Season

Ryan Sessegnon scored his first senior hat-trick against Sheffield United last November

Fulham winger Ryan Sessegnon has been named the Championship Player of the Season at the EFL Awards.

The 17-year-old has scored 14 goals in 43 league appearances for his side, who are third in the table.

Blackburn midfielder Bradley Dack, 24, and Accrington striker Billy Kee, 27, won the League One and League Two awards respectively in London.

Sessegnon was also named Young Player of the Season and Championship Apprentice of the Year.

Earlier in April, the teenager became the first player from outside of the top flight to be nominated for the PFA Young Player of the Year award, and he made his debut for England Under-21s against Ukraine in March.

Fulham are third in the Championship, one point off the automatic promotion places, but have played one game more than second-placed Cardiff.

"I just want to play in the Premier League with Fulham," Sessegnon said.

"We are on an incredible run this season and I want to continue that and hopefully we can push into the Premier League.

"Hopefully we can do it automatic but if not then we will do our best in the play-offs."

Sessegnon beat team-mate Tom Cairney, 27, and Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves to win the Championship Player of the Season award.

Portugal international Neves, 21, has scored six times in 39 outings for Wolves, who were promoted to the Premier League on Saturday.

Neves was included in the EFL Team of the Season alongside team-mates John Ruddy and Conor Coady, as well as Sessegnon.

BBC football commentator John Motson, who is retiring from broadcasting at the end of the season, won the Contribution to League Football award, recognising his service to the professional game.

The 72-year-old is in his 50th consecutive year with the corporation, and has covered 10 World Cups, 10 European Championships, 29 FA Cup finals and more than 200 England games.

Former Bristol Rovers and Southampton striker Rickie Lambert picked up the Sir Tom Finney award.

The honour, named after former England and Preston North End forward Finney, is presented to a player who has had an exceptional EFL career.

Lambert, 36, scored 218 goals in 607 league appearances over an 18-year career that saw him play for nine different clubs, seven of which were in the EFL.

He said: 'I'm very proud. It's a special moment for me. Coming through the youth ranks at Fulham to where I am now. I'm incredibly proud.

Ryan Sessegnon announced as Sky Bet Championship player of the Season at EFL Awards

Ryan Sessegnon has won the Sky Bet Championship Player of the Year award at the EFL Awards in London.

It's been a superb year for Fulham this season in the second tier of English football with them up near the sharp end for much of the campaign and looking to once again be a Premier League side next season.

Certainly, you cannot really argue with the award for the left-sided midfielder because he has been simply wonderful down the flanks for the Championship side.

Flourishing since the start of last year, he's seamlessly adapted to football in the second tier and many will be relishing seeing him in the top flight potentially in 2018/19.

Sessegnon beat Fulham team-mate Tom Cairney and Ruben Neves to the award with the Craven Cottage based-duo surely hoping that they can join Neves in the top flight next year.

Ryan Sessegnon named Championship Player of the Season

Fulham's Ryan Sessegnon has won Championship Player of the Season and Young Player of the Season at the EFL awards.

Sessegnon claimed five awards on the night, including the prize for Apprentice of the Year as well as being named in the Team of the Season and Club Developed XI.

The 17-year-old Fulham winger beat team-mate Tom Cairney and Wolves' Ruben Neves to the Player of the Season award.

Sessegnon, who has scored 14 goals in 39 Championship games this season, has also been nominated for the PFA Young Player of the year - the first player from outside the top flight to be on the shortlist.

"I never expected to win Young Player or Player of the Season because there is some fantastic competition - Ruben Neves at Wolves, James Maddison at Norwich and Tom Cairney here at Fulham," Sessegnon said. "To win those two awards is a special feeling."

Blackburn midfielder Bradley Dack, who has scored 16 goals this season, lifted the League One Player of the Season award, ahead of Peterborough's Jack Marriott and Wigan midfielder Nick Powell.

Accrington Stanley striker Billy Kee won League Two Player of the Season. Kee is the league's top scorer with 22 goals this season.

Mitre Goal of the Season went to Luton Town's Olly Kee for his strike from his own half against Cambridge United.

Rickie Lambert was presented with the prestigious Sir Tom Finney Award in recognition of his 18-year career in football, which saw him play more than 600 games across all four divisions as well as earning an England call-up.

Derby County were named Community Club of the Year, while Blackburn Rovers won Family Club of the Year. The Supporter of the Year award was given Mustafa El-Bayati in recognition of his unwavering support of Northampton Town.

QPR won the Special Project Award to honour their efforts in organising last year's #Game4Grenfell.

Commentator John Motson was recognised with the Contribution to League Football accolade in honour of his 50 years of service to commentary and broadcasting.

Fulham's Ryan Sessegnon wins nearly every prize on offer at EFL awards

Ryan Sessegnon swept the board at the EFL Awards after a stunning season with Fulham.

The 17-year-old wideman has followed up his success with England at last summer's European Under-19 Championship by scoring 14 goals to date in the Cottagers' promotion push.

His efforts were rewarded on Saturday when he became the first player on record from outside the top flight to be nominated for the PFA young player of the season award, so it was no surprise that he should be among the big winners at the Football League's gala evening.

But the scope of his success was still noteworthy as, in addition to being named in the team of the season and the club-developed XI, he was named as the Sky Bet Championship's player of the season and apprentice of the year and the Football League's young player of the season.

Blackburn's Bradley Dack and Accrington's Billy Kee took the player of the year honours for Leagues One and Two respectively, with Luton's Olly Lee winning the goal of the season award for his strike from his own half against Cambridge in November.

The team of the season saw the three divisional selections merged into a combined XI which saw Norwich's John Ruddy in goal behind a back four of Wigan's Nathan Byrne, Wolves captain Conor Coady, Blackburn skipper Charlie Mulgrew and Sessegnon.

Wolves playmaker Ruben Neves was flanked by Dack and Norwich's James Maddison in midfield with Kee, Bristol City's Bobby Reid and Wycombe powerhouse Adebayo Akinfenwa up front.

Rickie Lambert's long career was honoured with the Sir Tom Finney Award, commentator John Motson was honoured for his contribution to league football and the special project award went to QPR's Game for Grenfell in September, organised to raise money for those affected by the horrific tower block fire in North Kensington.
