I don't much care either way but a point in it's favour might be that it would discourage some posts that don't actually add anything to an argument.

Equally or alternatively some people who read but don't post could be enticed to join in by initially using the buttons.

Disagree really. Adding a plus and neg feature will ruin debate as people will just settle their opinion by negging down someone else's. Also then people will just start posting for likes/pluses instead of posts with substance.

Agreed - this place is turning to self-congratulatory at times already. Bloody awful idea IMO

Dont know how hard it is or not, but you could only like/dislike if you reply to said comment. Say you like something, agree, add your two cents in and then it becomes available + or - what have you. If you dont comment then you cant + or -

But your comment would be a like or dislike, but with words not pictures/ticks. And possibly with a tangent or a continuation of the conversation.

Essentially, but isnt that the point of a message board, to converse positively or negatively on a subject? I could care either way and dont mind if it is implemented or not i see both arguments.

...as mentioned before I am against it for the reasons given to the original suggestion. I suppose if there was a strong support for this sort of thing you could have a positive 'Reputation' button, but again this sort of thing could be considered elitist and lead to cronyism.

Personally I prefer that what we think about other posters, no matter how positive or negative such thoughts are, can be made in direct response via a reply - or passed on in private messages, keeping a recorded tally of either positives or negatives is not in my opinion a good idea...

I don't think that it would be helpful for the general relationship of the members of the forum if we are going to put up like and dislike buttons on posts. Simply put, it would cause tension between members who are going to be on the receiving end of everything.

And as the forum progresses, it would be just about being able to comment and say your piece in response to what has been posted, right?

I have to come down on the side of the dissenters in this. Both for the reasons already stated, and also we have made a firm effort to avoid 'popularity' contests on this site, as they can become divisive, in much the same way as the disastrous 'top 5' posters the offal had for a while, before they realized how much of a living monster it had become.
