Dempsey warns Premier League: There's more to come

Clint Dempsey has warned the Premier League there is more to come after he scored his 22nd goal of a stunning season against Chelsea on Monday night.

The American has scored 16 Premier League goals and has been touted for a move to a Champions League side this summer after his stunning performances for Martin Jol's team.

But Dempsey insists he is only focussed on helping Fulham finish in the top half of the table and is adamant he will only get better.

"It's been another good year," he said. "Every season I set out to better myself and feel like I have done that.

"That's all you can really ask for isn't it? I'm not the finished product, I still feel that I can improve and I've made consistent progress in that sense.

"I don't think much about records and statistics too much, but again, they can serve as markers in terms of working out how you have been performing.

"There are still some games to play, and it would be nice to increase that tally and finish the season strongly.

"That said, it's not about individual success, it's about the team and we want to make sure we finish in the top 10.

"It's always great to be recognised for the work you have been doing, so that's why the (club's Player of the Season) award was so special.

"But there are a lot of players that work just as hard, and it's something I accepted on their behalf too, because without your team-mates you wouldn't be able to do what you do.

"Is this my best season for Fulham and as a professional? I would have to say that it is, yes."

West Ham United beaten by Fulham

West Ham United's development side were beaten 3-2 by Fulham this afternoon.

The Hammers scored twice through striker Robert Hall but were still beaten at Little Heath.

In other news, Barnsley have extended the emergency loan of Frank Nouble until the end of the month.

AFC Wimbledon have also extended the youth loan of George Moncur until the start of next month.

Fulham star praises goal shy forward

Brede Hangeland has singled out Mousa Dembele for praise after the 1-1 draw with Chelsea

Fulham star Brede Hangeland has heaped praise on forward Mousa Dembele after their 1-1 draw with Chelsea last night.

The Whites had fallen behind to a Frank Lampard penalty moments before the break, but Clint Dempsey grabbed the plaudits with a fine equaliser eight minutes from time.

However the Norwegian felt Dembele, who has scored just once this season, merited praise for his performance.

“We all know he can do stuff that no-one else can do in this team,” Hangeland told the club’s official website.

“Sometimes he does unbelievable stuff in training, and it’s just about giving him the opportunity to do that as often as possible.

“He just needs to work on certain things in his game - among them scoring more goals - but that goes for all of us doesn’t it, apart from Clint!

“He’s one of those players you can look at and say there’s no limit to what he can do on the pitch.”

Fulham are not in action at the weekend because of Liverpool’s involvement in the FA Cup semi final, with their next game coming against Wigan at Craven Cottage on Saturday, April 21.

Penalty Confusion

Sat in the Hammersmith End, I had a decent view of the penalty incident and how Mark Clattenburg deduced it was a penalty is beyond me.

Returning home, and watching a re-run of the match on Sky Sports, eve Gary Neville was a little perplexed as to why, apart form Murphy`s apparent intent, it was given.

Therefore, to hear that Clattenburg actually gave the spot-kick because of a foul by Stephen Kelly simply adds to the confusion.

Naturally, Martin Jol wasn`t entirely happy with the award of the spot kick but, like us, he did believe the least we deserved was a draw, with the Dutchman remarking afterwards,

"It was a soft penalty and it was a bit confusing. We thought it was Danny but he touched the ball."

"The referee said Kelly but that was an accidental collision. I thought Kalou tripped himself."

"But we deserved the point. They didn`t cause us many problems."

We`d agree with that view, Chelsea, to us, didn`t look like a team that could bat Barcelona or even finish fourth, something Jol also visited in his after-match interview with the Dutchman stoking up things by commenting,

"I think Spurs will finish fourth, they have all the quality. Spurs fans should be happy with us."

They`d have been happier if we could have beaten them!

Ruiz Out for Season!

Our fears were realized yesterday.

We`d heard rumours that the injury Bryan Ruiz had collected up at the Reebok equated to a broken foot but we had received no official confirmation.

Sadly, Ruiz has broken his foot and his first season, in English football, has ended prematurely.

Ruiz now faces a fitness battle to be ready for next season and one wonderful commented, attributed to the Costa Rican, has appeared in the tabloid press this morning with Ruiz remarking about the injury,

"It hurt like hell and doesn`t look good."

We can imagine!

Striker Interest Annulled!

It appears that the name of our fine club was mentioned in dispatches with regards to signing the Cardiff City striker, Joe Mason.

Mason, who has impressed playing for the Welsh side this season, had, we assume, caught the eye of the Fulham scouts.

Well it would also now appear that any possible transfer could have been annulled with it being reported today that the player is to be offered a new deal by Cardiff!

West Ham 2-3 Reserves

Fulham’s Development Squad made it four wins in a row when they beat West Ham United 3-2 in a friendly match in Chadwell Heath on Tuesday afternoon.

The Whites took the lead through the highly rated Ronnie Minkwitz but went into the break level with the home side after Rob Hall had equalised.

The Team came out for the second 45 with real purpose and took the lead through our free-scoring Captain Alex Smith before Mesca Na Bangna gave the Whites a two goal advantage. Hall notched his second of the game but it wasn’t enough to stop Ray Lewington’s side coming away with a morale boosting victory.

Fulham starting XI: G. Smith, Harris, Kavanagh, Grimmer, Burn, Pritchard, Williams, A. Smith (C), Trotta, Minkwitz, Na Bangna

Robson urges Arsenal to complete Dempsey deal
Fulham forward Clint Dempsey would be a perfect signing for Arsenal

Fulham forward Clint Dempsey would be a great signing for Arsene Wenger, according to former Arsenal star Stewart Robson.

Speaking to talkSPORT earlier this afternoon, the fans' favourite praised the contribution of the American this term, who netted his 22nd goal of the season in last night's 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Craven Cottage.

The 29-year-old midfielder has been one of Fulham's standout performers in 2011-12, and is now being heavily linked with a move away from west London.

Arsenal have been credited with an interest in taking Dempsey to the Emirates Stadium, as Wenger looks to strengthen his squad with a view to mounting a renewed push for the Premier League title next year.

Robson feels the Cottagers star would fit in well in the north London surroundings, and says the Gunners should do everything they can to sign him this summer.

"Clint Dempsey is an excellent player," he said. "We have seen him score goals, whether it be from a wide position, whether it be from a centre-forward position, or whether it be from a withdrawn centre-forward position.

"He can score with his head, he can score with shots from outside the box, or from making runs into the box. If Arsenal could get him, he would be a great addition to the squad.

"He is more consistent than say Theo Walcott, though he hasn't got the same pace as [Alex] Oxlade-Chamberlain, Walcott or Gervinho."

Top clubs should keep an eye on Clint
Clint Dempsey would be a great signing for the top Premier League clubs

Clint Dempsey’s equaliser against Chelsea last night proved a number of things, but most prominent was that he belongs on the Premier League’s biggest stage.

The American midfielder is having his best season since joining Fulham in 2007 and is demonstrating his qualities more succinctly with every performance.

Roberto di Matteo is doing his best to solidify what was a leaky Blues defence but it can be no surprise that Dempsey managed to breach the Stamford Bridge club’s rear guard at Craven Cottage.

It was the 29-year-old’s 16th league goal of the season and he is currently setting a new record for goals scored by an individual player in a single league season for the Cottagers.

With the age he is at, Dempsey is most probably demonstrating the form of a man in his prime and his contractual situation means he should be a prime transfer target for any one of the Premier League’s bigger clubs.

Fulham have turned this season into a respectable one for themselves in recent months but they are likely realistic at the prospects of convincing their leading scorer to stay beyond his current deal, which will have a year left in the summer.

You would imagine a big club is considering a bid for the USA international due to his current purple patch and the relatively good price a player of his age could command with so little time left on his contract.

Dempsey does mot only provide goals, he is a constant dynamic presence around the opposition penalty box and has the ability to pick a through ball.

Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with Dempsey in the past and either of these clubs would be a good move for him.

Arsene Wenger’s side have been overly reliant on captain Robin van Persie for goals this season – though recent weeks have bucked the trend seen for most of the season – and the American would certainly help out in that regard.

He may not have been the right style of midfielder in the Gunners previous sides, but the more direct approach they have adopted throughout the season would suit him well.

Flexibility in positioning is another attribute Dempsey would provide, with him being able to play a more advanced role, as well as in a more traditional central midfield position.

It does not end with the north London clubs either, Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United could make good use of a player in Dempsey’s mould.

He would allow the Old Trafford boss greater flexibility in the centre of the pitch in terms of formation, with Dempsey’s attacking threat possibly being heightened by advancing his position should things not be going so well.

He would also allow Wayne Rooney the chance to get further up the pitch by replacing the England man in the support striker role, though this would obviously be a secondary option as Rooney’s creativity in that position has a lot to do with United’s ever more likely title win.

However, Dempsey’s qualities would most likely be best felt in either Liverpool or the club he has foiled on two occasions so far this season – Chelsea.

Kenny Dalglish’s side are the side most desperate for an added goal threat and the former New England Revolution man’s danger around the box would be complimented with his ability to create threatening situations in and around the area.

The Anfield club do not really have an attacking midfielder who gets into the box regularly and Dempsey’s knack for this would also mean greater support for Luis Suarez, who has often found himself isolated this season.

There are others who should be doing this but so far players such as Stewart Downing and Dirk Kuyt have not been able to contribute to the club’s scoring tally as readily as some may have expected.

It would not be a bad move for a player who is likely looking for one more big move in his career and his compatibility with Liverpool’s style mean this would probably be a decent signing and less of a gamble than the large sums paid out for Downing, Jordan Henderson and Andy Carroll.

The other goal scorer in the draw at Craven Cottage on Monday night was Frank Lampard, and it is he who Dempsey could possibly replace.

The England midfielder tucked away a penalty late in the first half, which was his 150th goal in the Premier League, but it would be hard to deny such an illustrious career is in its twilight days.

Lampard is nowhere near as mobile as he once was and may have to accept a lesser role in the side come next season, or change his game appropriately to make himself important in other ways.

While Dempsey’s starting position is not quite as deep as Lampard’s, his eye for goal would be a suitable replacement for the Chelsea man’s own scoring exploits.

While they are hardly starved for goals, the Blues have been guilty of isolating their central striker at times in much the same way as Liverpool have.

Wherever he ends up, Dempsey is ready to step up and become a major player in Premier League circles - something the big clubs should recognise.

While not being the most fashionable signing, the American would provide consistency that so many managers crave and at a good price – he will be the bargain of the summer.

Clint Dempsey: Is He the Best American-Born Soccer Player Ever?

Chelsea was pressing on the attack and Fulham was feeling the heat when, in the 44th minute, Chelsea was awarded a penalty, which was converted by Frank Lampard for his 150th league goal.

Fulham played a great second half and managed to get more shots on target than Chelsea.

Then eight minutes from time, a Damien Duff corner that went straight to the head of American Clint Dempsey, landed just inside Petr Cech's post and the game at Craven Cottage was equalized.

It was Dempsey's third goal in two games, and he furthered his club record of goals in a season to 16. By taking his tally to 16, he has surpassed and left behind Louis Saha's club record of 13 set back in 2004. This season, many worldwide have noticed Clint Dempsey and his talents.

After becoming the highest scoring American player in his 85th minute game winner against Liverpool in December, many rose their eyebrows at the question; is Clint Dempsey the best American player we have seen?

The American international has arguably been the most successful player in Europe, as we can recall flops like Freddy Adu and even Landon Donovan, whose time in Germany was less than successful.

He started his professional career with the New England Revolution in 2004. In December 2006, his current English football club offered $4 million dollars for the rights of the midfielder.

In his tenure in England, he holds many records for American-born players, surpassing Brian McBride's goals in a season, total goals, and goals in the Premier League.

Clint Dempsey is the highest goalscorer for Fulham and has 212 appearances, which is the most for active players.

His international numbers are just as impressive. The Texas native has the 4th most goals in United States history, despite having only 83 caps, which is not even in the top ten.

Most recently, he scored the lone goal in an international friendly against Italy, which marked the first time the United States had beaten Italy.

Although the United States has lagged in the production of successful overseas and domestic footballers, Clint Dempsey has stood out among the few.

He has a tough, rugged style of play. He has a fierceful dribbling ability and has an uncanny one-on-one ability to beat a player to the ball.

He saw success in being the runner up for the MLS Cup and Supporters' Shield in 2005. Fulham and Dempsey saw heartache in their loss to Atletico Madrid in the Europa Cup loss back in 2010. Dempsey has drank from the cup of victory though with the USMNT winning two CONCACAF Gold Cups in 2005, and 2007.

There is no question that in today's game of football, Clint Dempsey reigns supreme to American-born players, but is he the best of all time? Only time can tell for the 29-year-old, although he is well on his way to the title of Best American Soccer Player of All Time.

Honorable mentions; Brad Friedel, Tim Howard, Kasey Keller, Claudio Reyna, John Harkes, Thomas Dooley, Eddie Pope, Joe-Max Moore, Brian McBride, Eric Wynalda, Cobi Jones, Jess Agoos and Landon Donovan.

Ruiz undergoes metatarsal op
Fulham forward Bryan Ruiz had undergone minor surgery on the broken metatarsal that has ruled him out for the season.

The Costa Rica international picked up the injury in Saturday's 3-0 Premier League win at Bolton and had to be carried off after 73 minutes and the club have now confirmed he will be sidelined for 10 weeks.

A club statement read: "Following an injury sustained against Bolton Wanderers on Saturday 7th April, the club can report that Bryan Ruiz sustained a fracture in the fifth metatarsal in his foot.

"A small operational procedure has taken place to repair the damage, and the sports science team advise a 10-week recovery period, prior to any form of training."

Speaking after the 1-1 draw with west London rivals Chelsea, Fulham manager Martin Jol said: "He broke his foot so he will be out until June or July. It is a metatarsal issue."

Pavel starts Fulham talks
Russian striker confident of securing a stay in the Premier League
Pavel Pogrebnyak has confirmed talks have started with Fulham regarding a new contract and believes he will stay in the Premier League.

The Russian striker has created a favourable impression at Craven Cottage since joining the club from Stuttgart in January on a deal until the end of the season.

He scored five goals in his first three appearances for Fulham, but has missed the last two games due to an ankle injury.

Cottagers boss Martin Jol has already expressed his eagerness to keep the 28-year-old, while Aston Villa have been linked with an offer.

Pogrebnyak is keen to remain in England and is pleased with the early progression regarding negotiations for an extension.

"Yes, the negotiations about my contract with Fulham have already begun," Pogrebnyak is quoted by sport.mail.ru.

"My agent has already talked to the management of the club. I think there's a big chance that I will stay in England.

"Me, the coach and the management, we are all solid on the question regarding my future."

London Pride

More than a match for the Champions League semi-finalists, only the rub of the green denies Fulham a rare win over our neighbours from the Bridge.

Saturday saw the Whites lose their worst away record in the league tag, by Monday night we had a new one. The Kings of London when it comes to points gained from all capital derbies thus far. This may not be a vintage Chelsea team but in three games this season, two of them at their place, we have not been bested in regulation play. We've also had the maximum return off the Ha-Ha's, four points from Arsenal. And the way their season has nose-dived, can we dare to dream of turning Spurs over at the Lane on the last day of the season? Would be a lovely way to head off for the summer that's for sure.

Big shout out to the boys once again Monday night in our 50th game of the season. We looked fitter, played the better football, and certainly deserved a draw at the very least. Few referees would have see that tangle of legs, arms and elbows between Kelly, Kalou and Murphy as worthy of a penalty kick. Yet again, another contentious decision with a direct impact on the result goes the way of the 'bigger' team. While Clattenburg's positioning was good, he's never impressed me as a ref - get's far too much wrong.

We made two changes, Chelsea six. One telling factor for Fulham after the drubbing we gave Bolton, Damien's threat was stifled by Chelsea's well-organised back line. But what a mastertstoke from Martin to replace Kacaniklic - who has done nothing wrong to date - with Kerim Frei. He was the brightest star on the pitch and kept Ivanovic on his toes all game. I'm sure Chelsea were the happier to hear the final whistle as momentum was well and truly with Fulham for the last 20 minutes (now aint that refreshing to say?), but maybe we didn't quite work Cech enough to warrant all three points. Here, unlike at the Reebok, it was easier to see what a hard furrow to plough Clint had as the lone target man. Chelsea just had that extra dimension that dictated we couldn't be quite so gung ho from midfield, as Moussa and Diarra needed to be more circumspect. Might have been different had Sa come on earlier.

Having said that, Torres was anonymous. Neither Mata nor Drogba made an impact, and was Mark ever seriously troubled? In front of the keeper anyone who witenssed last night would question why the Hughes-Hangland axis was ever broken up. And why has it taken so long for JAR to start showing his real worth? More displays like this, and will Jol gamble on our two full-backs for another season? Personally I hope not. Then again, if Grygera returns to fitness and is retained as utility cover, the board can invest on fresh blood in other areas.

Jol gave an interesting comment over the weekend, saying how far off he is re-fashioning the side as he would like. He was being somewhat disingenuous I felt with the journo when saying he's had to work primarily with the same bunch of near veterans that took us to the brink in Hamburg. While largely true, it also ignores the minimal return FFC have got from Kasami, Gecov, Sa and the somewhat expensive Senor Ruiz. The quote finished with Jol saying he had maybe six of the ideal eleven characters he wants to turn Fulham into a top seven side. This after a season Jol himself described pre-Christmas as the toughest job he's had in football. But on the basis of our eight home wins and the 32 goals scored at the Cottage so far, I sense things can only get better for the Dutchman from here on in.

Last week I forecast a season end tally of 49 points and a comfortable mid-table finish. Home wins over Wigan and Sunderland would give us that, regardless what we get from three final tough away games - Everton, Liverpool and Spurs. Not that these three teams are a class apart - far from it - they just happen to play at venues where Fulham wins are as rare as a pope with dreadlocks. I'm more than happy to have a rest from the Europa League for a season or two, breaking 50 points would be a bonus while a finish in the top half is enough. Especially after we waited so long for our first win. I think Jol has also signalled his intention now to chance a few experiments with team selection as we've passed the 40 point mark.

It all bodes well for real progress next term, and why I suggested it may be time to invest in a season ticket again. Let's not air the will-he-stay-or-will-he-go Dempsey debate right here. Clint will decide in the summer he says, for now he just wants to concentrate on his game. Precisely in keeping with his work ethic, dedication and single-minded application to continue improving. Dembele is another with his suitors. There will be movements in and out over the summer. One thing we do know about Jol, he has plenty of good international contacts, so scouting out replacements if the price is right should not be a problem. Both Pogrebnyak and Diarra are options FFC have on the table. How good might both be come next August after a full pre-season with the squad? You'd forecast a couple of pretty big names heading for Stevenage Road to freshen up the side and keep supporters happy, but along with our own emerging talent, I reckon the raw materials are there for a very exciting new-look Fulham team to trot down the tunnel this August (and back in regulation BLACK shorts please).

Time to draw breath before we face Wigan, so let's be hearing from you all as we prepare to ink in Fulham's end of term report, which I shall forward up to the Head at Motspur Park. Please use this platform to sing the praises of Fulham's midfield goal machine...I am running out of superlatives for the club's now all time record goal scorer in the Premier League. Your highs and lows of a season that took us to some European outposts and plumbed the depths of despair (all those awful awaydays) while lifting us to ecstatic highs - QPR last October, Arsenal and Newcastle this winter. Goal of the season so far? There's a few contenders for that.

By the way, as some of our international followers were asking, news from the council re our application for the Riverside development is due on Wednesday.

I am planning a print run compiling the blog archive + comments of the past two seasons with snazzy action pics and additional notes, tables, stats etc. for you all to purchase at a nominal price and cherish till your dying day. Make sure your contribution makes the final cut.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is monitoring Fulham forward Clint Dempsey
Clint Dempsey, Fulham’s in-form striker, is among the players being scouted by Arsenal as manager Arsène Wenger prepares to overhaul his attacking options this summer.

Dempsey is out of contract at Fulham next year and, having scored 22 goals in all competitions this season, is in the best form of his career.

Wenger, though, also considered a move for Dempsey last summer and is impressed both by his consistency and versatility in playing either as a winger or a striker.

Fulham remain determined to keep Dempsey and there has been no approach from Arsenal, but the 29 year-old has not yet accepted the offer of an extended contract.

Manager Martin Jol recently described Dempsey as “indispensable” but it is understood that the player would prefer to wait until the summer before deciding his future.

If no agreement can be reached, Fulham must decide whether they would be willing to sell their best player or risk losing him for nothing next summer.

Arsenal have already agreed an £11 million deal for Cologne forward Lukas Podolski while Montpellier striker Olivier Giroud, who is the top scorer in the French league, is being tracked by Arsenal.

Much will depend, however, on whether existing Arsenal players are sold, with Nicklas Bendtner due back from his loan spell at Sunderland this summer and both Marouane Chamakh and Ju-Young Park having featured so rarely this season.

Arsenal also face contract negotiations with Robin van Persie and Theo Walcott, while Wenger must decide whether he will attempt to sign Yossi Benayoun, on a permanent basis, from Chelsea.

Wenger has been greatly impressed by Benayoun, particularly his contribution in wins over Tottenham and Manchester City, but will not make any decision until the end of the season.

“We have to look at the situation in a global way because we have many players out on loan so we need to deal with these situations,” said Wenger.

“We have to say that in the games he started he did extremely well and the team did extremely well as well. That is never a coincidence. So we have a good balance in the team with him and a good focus. And of course he has quality, Yossi.”

Benayoun is facing competition from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Gervinho but is expected to keep his place in the Arsenal team for tonight’s match against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Arsenal, though, will be without Laurent Koscielny in defence after he collected a two-game suspension for collecting his 10th booking of the season in Sunday’s match against Manchester City.

“We have a little [disruption] but Johan Djourou has done well recently when he came in,” said Wenger.

Andre Santos is also expected to replace Kieran Gibbs, who came off during the 1-0 win against Manchester City on Sunday with a groin injury.

Wolves manager Terry Connor, meanwhile, has insisted that Roger Johnson’s clash with goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey had no influence on his decision to drop the defender for the weekend defeat at Stoke.

“It was more about the three goals that went in against Bolton. I made that decision on a football basis.”

Karl Henry, the former captain, was handed the armband against Stoke after losing the role to Johnson last summer.

“The decision was taken with proper consideration and for the best of the football club,” said Connor.
