Stepping Up

This season has seen Martin Jol hand several young players their debuts with Kerim Frei, Marcello Trotta and Lauri Dalle Valle all enjoying game time with the First Team.

The latest youngster to be introduced to the Fulham Faithful is 20-year-old Alex Kacaniklic who, after being recalled from his loan at Watford ahead of schedule by Jol, has gone on to feature in our last three matches - helping us secure seven points in the process.

“Playing against Norwich was obviously a big moment for me,” the Swede admitted. “Making your debut is a special occasion and one that I won’t forget. I came on in the game after 35 minutes, so it was a good amount of time and I thought that it went pretty well.

“I think I was involved in quite a bit of action in the game, and it was one that we won – which was important. It would have been an even better day had I managed to score, but the ‘keeper made a good save to tip my shot onto the bar. It was close!”

Martin Jol clearly had plans for the former Liverpool winger having been impressed by his performances in the Championship for Sean Dyche’s side.

“I really enjoyed my time there, and it was a good two months or so,” Alex said of his time with the Hornets. “I got to play regular first team football and I learned a lot from that.

“I’m very thankful that they gave me the chance and hopefully I can just keep on going now. It’s a big challenge to step up and play with the big boys in the Premier League, but it’s what I want to do so I’ll have to get my head down and hopefully as a result I’ll get more chances to play.”

And he certainly has been given those chances after Martin Jol rewarded him for an impressive substitute appearance against Norwich by starting him in the 3-0 victory at the Reebok Stadium, a match in which he saw 87 minutes of action. Kacaniklic left Liverpool in search of first team football and it is a move which has certainly been vindicated.

“I left Liverpool two years ago and I’ve had two years here now and it’s been really good,” Alex said. “Now I want to take that step up to the First Team and hopefully that’s something that I’m going to be able to do.

“I just want to try and do my best and work hard and I just want to play. Obviously I just want to play for Fulham so that’s my target – I want to play as many games for Fulham as I can between now and the end of the season.”

Post match interviews with Murphy and Dempsey

Two good people, eh?

Have you ever seen a player with more of a manager’s demeanor than Murphy?

Fearless prediction: at some point Muprhy becomes Liverpool’s first great manager for an eternity.  Wise observers note that many of his managerial traits are positively Hodgson-esque, and Murphy does not disagree with this.  What goes around…

HOW THIS UNITED STATES INTERNATIONAL COULD REJUVENATE MAN UNITED’S MIDFIELD:

I can’t be the only one surprised that Clint Dempsey has spent his entire Premier League career playing for Fulham. This is meant as no slight against the Cottagers (who currently have the makings of an excellent squad) but I see Dempsey as the kind of player who could cut it at a team playing Champions League football and vying for silverware. After the season he’s had this year there’s every chance that ‘bigger’ clubs will come in for him in the summer and now that he’s 29-years-old he has a decision to make: where does he spend the last years of his career?

Dempsey’s Fulham contract will expire in summer 2013 and Fulham are believed to be in negotiations for new terms. The fear is that he won’t sign and that will put the Cottagers in an awkward position: do they sell him this summer and make some money or keep him for another year and lose him on a free?

Whilst Dempsey has been non-committal in terms of his future, his performances on the football pitch show that he’s fully focused on Fulham at the moment. 15 Premier League goals (21 goals in total this season) in 32 appearances show that he’s no slouch. Last season he scored 12 goals in 37 appearances so the signs are there that he’s hitting a late career peak.

But he offers more than just goals. He’s got bundles of experience – 179 appearances for Fulham and 83 appearances for the US. He’s strong in the air, quick along the ground and is capable of shouldering the creative burden in the midfield. All in all, he’s a top all-round midfielder.

So couldn’t Dempsey do a job at a club like Manchester United who look a little short in midfield? Some fans are a little snobbish when it comes to bringing in players who have stood out in ‘smaller clubs’, but I can’t help but feel that Dempsey would excel if given an opportunity to make the step up. If there’s any real concern just look at the way Antonio Valencia developed after moving to United from Wigan.

Given Dempsey’s record and his performances in the Premier League this season isn’t there evidence that he can do the same? Throughout United’s history the club has dominated by scooping up the best talents from teams below them.

There’s no use whining about how they’re not in a top team, if they’re a good, effective player then they can do a job.

With Scholes’ absence and uncertainty surrounding Anderson’s future Clint Dempsey could be the perfect solution to United’s woes. So does Sir Alex Ferguson really need to look abroad for the answer?

Pavel starts Fulham talks
Russian striker confident of securing a stay in the Premier League

Pavel Pogrebnyak: Fulham striker has confirmed talks have started about a new contract

Pavel Pogrebnyak has confirmed talks have started with Fulham regarding a new contract and believes he will stay in the Premier League.

The Russian striker has created a favourable impression at Craven Cottage since joining the club from Stuttgart in January on a deal until the end of the season.

He scored five goals in his first three appearances for Fulham, but has missed the last two games due to an ankle injury.

Cottagers boss Martin Jol has already expressed his eagerness to keep the 28-year-old, while Aston Villa have been linked with an offer.

Pogrebnyak is keen to remain in England and is pleased with the early progression regarding negotiations for an extension.

"Yes, the negotiations about my contract with Fulham have already begun," Pogrebnyak is quoted by sport.mail.ru.

"My agent has already talked to the management of the club. I think there's a big chance that I will stay in England.

"Me, the coach and the management, we are all solid on the question regarding my future."

Arsenal ‘Determined’ to Land £10m Dempsey Despite Liverpool Interest

Arsenal will try to beat off competition from Liverpool and Newcastle to sign Fulham forward Clint Demspey this summer, according to the Daily Mail.

The report claims the Gunners have regularly sent scouts to watch the USA striker in recent months, and they have convinced Arsene Wenger that he would be a great addition at the Emirates.

Dempsey has bagged 22 goals already this season for Fulham and his contract situation means he could be available at a knock down price this summer. The 29-year-old’s current contract expires in 2013 and he’s stalling on discussing a new deal, and the Mail suggest that Arsenal are ‘determined’ to fight off competition from Liverpool and Newcastle to sign the £10m-rated forward in the summer.

There is no doubt Dempsey has been a stand-out performer at Craven Cottage this season and he should certainly be pushing for place in the Premier League team of the year, so it’s no surprise to hear he’s attracting interest from some of the big-hitters. £10m would represent something of a bargain for a player who’s proven in the Premier League and if he refuses to sign a new contract it’s going to be very different for Fulham to hang on to him.

‘Aberdeen FC’s Fyvie can do better than Fulham’
Craig Brown tells Fraser to aim higher

ABERDEEN FC midfielder Fraser Fyvie was today advised to set his sights higher than a move to Fulham when he quits Pittodrie.

Manager Craig Brown dismissed the latest report claiming Fyvie will make a cut-price move to Craven Cottage in the summer.

Brown has accepted Fyvie, whose contract with Aberdeen FC expires in December, will be moving on. But he feels Fyvie should be looking to go to the likes of Manchester United or Arsenal rather than a middle-range Premier club like Fulham.

Fyvie - I need to move
Fulham tipped to renew interest in Aberdeen youngster

Fraser Fyvie: Looking for a fresh challenge and may be set to find it at Fulham

Fulham could be set to snap up Fraser Fyvie for a bargain price in the summer, with the promising Aberdeen youngster feeling it is the right time to move.

The teenager has told Dons Boss Craig Brown he has no intention of signing a new contract at Pittodrie when his current deal expires at the end of the year.

Aberdeen will be forced to sell the midfielder in the close season or face the prospect of receiving only a compensation fee when he leaves.

But any money the club do receive will be a pittance in comparison to the £5million price tag Brown put on the player in February.

Fulham were close to a deal for Fyvie last year but the Premier League outfit were only prepared to pay £1million and the deal fell through.

And Fulham, who also recently signed Aberdeen defender Jack Grimmer for £200,000, will be well aware they can now get their man at a cut-price fee.

Aberdeen-born Fyvie told the Daily Record: "I need to go to progress my career. I feel it's the right time for me to try my luck elsewhere and see what happens.

"I may be taking a big gamble but sometimes you have to take a risk. I feel I want to go and challenge myself."

Norwich have also expressed an interest in Fyvie and the prospect of the two clubs entering into a bidding war for the 19-year-old could help to drive up the price.

Frei's Derby Joy

Fulham kept up their run of frustrating Chelsea this season with a deserved 1-1 draw at Craven Cottage on Monday.

Our local rivals have failed to beat us this campaign, penalty shoot-outs aside, and one man who clearly relishes the derby games is Kerim Frei who has started every match against the Blues this season.

“I never imagined at the start of the season that I’d play against Chelsea three times!” Kerim told fulhamfc.com. “Even in the first game when I played in the Carling Cup I didn’t think I was going to play so that was my first big game.

"As I’d played against them twice before I was quite confident going into Monday’s game and I thought we did very well as a Team.

“Maybe we should have won because we had quite a lot of chances. I thought Petr Cech played well but we should perhaps have scored more and then we could have come away with three points instead of one.

“Personally, I think I did okay on Monday. The other players had played on the Saturday before so I was maybe a bit fresher than the others but I was quite happy with my performance.”

The Swiss winger is clearly being modest as Sky Sports gave him their Man of the Match award after he posed a constant threat down the left-wing until his withdrawal on 87 minutes.

“I was delighted to hear that I was Man of the Match,” he admitted. “My family were here to celebrate with me so I had a good evening. Danny [Murphy] came over with the champagne in the changing room and told me that I’d got it so I was very happy.”

Murphy is clearly a fan of his 18-year-old team mate and was extremely complimentary of Frei’s performance in his post-match interview.

“It’s great to hear your Captain say such positive things about you,” Kerim explained. “It is always nice when a team mate talks you up. I’m young so it’s nice to hear positive feedback so I had to say thanks to Danny for his support.”

Fulham to assess strike duo

FULHAM will assess injuries to Pavel Pogrebnyak and Andy Johnson over the next week.

The strike duo missed Monday's SW6 derby draw with Chelsea, with Pogrebnyak failing a fitness test as he struggles to shake off an ankle injury.

Meanwhile, contract rebel Johnson hasn't featured since mid-March after a combination of groin and thigh problems.

But boss Martin Jol is hopeful at least one of the pair will be ready by the time the Whites host Wigan in 10 days time.

He said: “We tested him [Pavel] on Sunday and he couldn't start. It's the same situation with Andy Johnson.

“They're injuries to look at for the next week.”

Arsenal and Fulham in battle for Trabzonspor striker

Arsenal and Fulham will have to act fast if they want to sign prolific Turkish star Burak Yilmaz as Sevilla are now making moves to land his signature.

Yilmaz has been earning rave reviews for Trabzonspor, scoring 31 goals in just 28 appearances this season.

Both Arsene Wenger and Martin Jol have been following his progress and looked set to make their moves for the talented striker during the summer.

But reports in Spanish newspaper Estadio Deportivo claim that Sevilla are now making advanced moves to sign the Turkey international and are ready to make a £5m offer.

The Spanish club have sent scouts to watch him in action and are hoping to finalise a move for the 26-year-old in the near future.

Ref Review – Mark Clattenburg – Fulham 1 v 1 Chelsea (EPL – 09/04/2012)

Our Ref Review this week comes from @BobbyHare, who is making his debut on Debatable Decisions. He takes a look at Mark Clattenburg’s performance in the draw between Fulham and Chelsea at Craven Cottage.

Not a Premier League match seems to go by without a debate over the (in)competence of officials. Chelsea arrived at Craven Cottage fresh from a last minute smash-and-grab against strugglers Wigan Athletic on Saturday, in which they had benefitted from two hugely fortuitous offside decisions. While tonight’s game contained no such controversy, a few of Mark Clattenburg’s decisions still need to be examined. His decision-making wasn’t always accurate, but overall he probably managed to referee the fixture to a fair conclusion.

General match management
Fulham-Chelsea is one of the more sedate local derbies in English football and this match was a reflection of that. The play ebbed and flowed smoothly with both sides enjoying periods of control. Clattenburg resisted the temptation to be overly officious and he generally only whistled when necessary. The ball never spent an unreasonable time out of play and any stoppages were brief, with the action always swiftly recommencing. Clattenburg appeared to communicate well with players on both teams, meaning that dissent was virtually non-existant; though this may also have been a result of Ashley Cole’s absence.

“I thought this was Monday Night Football, not WWE?”
After a quarter of an hour, Clattenburg delayed the taking of a Fulham corner so he could take Fernando Torres and Aaron Hughes to task over the wrestling taking place in the box. It’s an interesting one, because such physical grappling outside the box invariably leads to free kicks, yet in the area referees are extremely reluctant to make a decision. Naturally, Clattenburg turned a blind eye to all jostling as the subsequent corner came in, but he can’t really be criticised for that, since it goes on in matches the length and breadth of the country. At least he was being consistent!

Meireles booking
A quarter of the way into the game, Chelsea’s Raul Meireles, complete with his abysmal haircut, was booked thanks to an accumulation of fouls. A moment earlier Clattenburg had given the Portuguese midfielder his final warning. Replays showed that Meireles had been harshly judged, with John Arne Riise slipping on the greasy surface under no contact. On reflection, it was an easy one for Clattenburg to get wrong from the angle he viewed the incident, and Meireles’s litany of previous fouls probably influenced his decision. He didn’t deserve a yellow for that challenge, but he paid the price for persistent fouling.

Chelsea penalty claim – handball by Kelly
Ryan Bertrand, who filled in seamlessly for Ashley Cole, struck a shot against Stephen Kelly’s right hand after half an hour. Despite the claims, Clattenburg was rightly unmoved. The ball indisputably struck the Fulham defender, but he made a clear and obvious motion to pull his arm back towards his body. It’s not a penalty every time the ball strikes a hand or arm.

Chelsea penalty – foul by… erm… somebody
An uninspired opening 45 minutes came to life just before half time as Salomon Kalou was felled in the area. Frank Lampard rammed home the resulting penalty with real conviction, but there was confusion as to why Clattenburg had made the decision. It initially seemed that Danny Murphy had been penalised for a brainless slide on the Ivorian. Granted, contact was miminal (possibly even non existent) but Murphy could have taken the decision out of Clattenburg’s hands by being sensible and just jockeying his man instead.

Shortly after half time it came to light that Clattenburg had informed Murphy that he had not actually given the penalty for an infringement by him. I find this completely perplexing, since the alternative is that Stephen Kelly made the foul. Replays show that there was a coming together between Kelly and Kalou, but it was completely accidental. The only way contact could have been avoided is if Kelly had abandoned his defensive responsibilities and stopped running. Just as a handball can’t be given every time the ball strikes a hand or arm, a foul can’t be given each time there is physical contact between two players.

I’ve concluded that Clattenburg was right to blow up for a penalty because an infringement did take place (by Murphy, in my eyes), but he charged the wrong man for the offence. Justice was done, but the reasoning to arrive at the correct decision was hugely flawed. So, I guess, he muddled his way to the correct decision.

Chelsea penalty claim – push by Hangeland on Lampard
Five minutes into the second half, Chelsea were denied a certain penalty as Brede Hangeland shoved Lampard in the back after the England man had stolen a march on him. The replay appeared to show Clattenburg in a good position, which made the non-award mystifying. My theory is that the referee had the first half penalty in his mind, along with the protests of Murphy ringing in his ears, and he tried to even up the score. It’s not right, but it’s human nature.

Incident free
The final forty minutes of the match continued with reasonably little incident. The fractured nature of the play was down to both teams’ inability to play with any real incision in the final third. Fulham gradually grew into the game and deservedly grabbed an equaliser through a relatively subdued Clint Dempsey. On the balance of possession, territory and chances, the final score of 1-1 was perfect. Clattenburg had little to do in the second half other than to mete out stonewall yellow cards to Jon Obi Mikel and Danny Murphy for professional fouls.

Ref Rating – 6/10
As I’ve intimated above, I don’t feel Mark Clattenburg’s decision-making was greatly accurate over the course of the game. His general management of the game was good, but he erred on key individual decisions. For the penalty he did award, he came to the right decision but the thought process that brought him to that point was confused. In the second period, he failed to give Chelsea an even more obvious penalty, and given Lampard’s potency from the spot, it could be argued that Chelsea were denied two key points in the race for Champions League football. That said, Chelsea got two bonus points at the weekend – maybe these decisions do even themselves out.
