Permission Granted!

Once again flicking through the free paper I picked up on the tube on the way in to work, I noticed something that may interest supporters of our club.

The paper is reporting that Martin Jol has been given permission to try and procure the services of the Trabzonspor forward, Burak Yilmaz

Yilmaz is twenty-six years of age but apart from that we know very little about the player, so if you can help us then we`d be more than grateful!

Another Johnson Rumour!

The future of Andrew Johnson has been talked about subject, for several weeks.

Various stories have emerged, with differing outcomes. Some infer that AJ will be staying; others infer that he`ll be off this summer - a free agent.

Currently, we`re not sure what to believe but our old boss, Roy Hodgson, up at West Bromwich Albion is, if we`re to believe the media, contemplating selling one of his prize assets - Peter Odemwingie, with a view to bringing in somebody he`s previously worked with - AJ!

I think I`ll sit back and wait and see what happens, how about you?

Hands off Odemwingie! West Brom striker not for sale, insists boss Hodgson

West Brom manager Roy Hodgson is adamant star striker Peter Odemwingie is not for sale and insists the Nigerian will be at the Hawthorns next season.

Hodgson has rubbished speculation linking Odemwingie with a move to Fulham in exchange for Andrew Johnson. Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has also shown interested in the past.

Odemwingie was Albion's top scorer with 15 goals last season and has netted another 10 so far in the current campaign despite a series of injury niggles.

Wanted: Peter Odemwingie has attracted interest from Arsenal and Fulham

Hodgson said: 'Peter Odemwingie is an important player for us and a player we believe in and a player we want to keep and a player who is not for sale.

'We don't welcome offers for Peter Odemwingie. He is a West Brom player at the moment and will be next season. We want to keep him and he is under contract. Very simple really.'

Hodgson worked with Johnson during his spell in charge at Craven Cottage. But he said: 'It is very irritating when people just out of the blue suddenly start linking us with other players.

'I presume the link with Andy Johnson is based on the fact we worked together at Fulham and it is a player I admire as a footballer.

'He did a great job for me but, to be fair, he is not a player we've actually discussed in terms of next season.'

No sale: West Brom manager Roy Hodgson

Albion have a group of players out of contract or approaching the final 12 months of their current deals in James Morrison, Jonas Olsson, Keith Andrews, Nicky Shorey, Steven Reid, Paul Scharner, Jerome Thomas and Marc-Antoine Fortune.

But Hodgson is not expecting any swift decisions on their futures. He said: 'I don't think the situation we are in is any different to any other club. Every club has players who are either running out of contract or entering the last year.

'It is part and parcel of this time and year and trying to prepare for the next season. We've got time and most squads won't be finalised until August. That is how it's been the last few years and that is how it will be this year.

'I hope the players we are holding talks with would love to stay, I hope they sign the contracts and stay with the club.'

‘Second Coming of Diarra’ gives Fulham fans Easter cheer

The post-January transfer window sigh of relief is probably the one emotion that is universally shared by football fans of all clubs across the country. Whether or not you landed that prized continental striker moments before the deadline, or begrudgingly lost the battle to cling on to a young academy prospect, everyone is simply glad of one thing; that it’s all over.

The constant turning of the ‘rumour mill’ (often a modern day euphemism for ‘journalist’s imagination’) can stop, the column inches no longer need to be filled, and everyone can, for four months at least, concentrate on the actual bloody football.

Trust Fulham, then, to be the ones to break this footballing modus operandi with the sudden announcement on the 27th February of a new signing. Not just any old signing either; as a former Real Madrid (signed for €26m) and Lyon player with multiple league championship medals on his C.V., Mahamadou Diarra has undoubtedly the richest pedigree of any of the current squad.

The immediate questions that sprung to mind were ‘how’ and ‘why’? The undoubtedly long and winding path from the Bernabeu to Stevenage Road certainly cannot be described as ‘well-trodden’, and the immediate assumption is that anyone who has walked down it must be carrying a considerable amount of baggage. In truth, Diarra’s career in recent years has seen a serious decline; having fallen out of favour at Real, he joined AS Monaco in January 2011 in a bid to revive his career. The move was disastrous for both parties; Monaco were relegated and Diarra was released with less-than-glowing reviews on both his performance and fitness levels. A trial at Doncaster in October which amounted to nothing suggested that Diarra was off the football radar for good.

With his arrival at Fulham met with a healthy if diverse mixture of intrigue, surprise and scepticism, Diarra was given a final opportunity to prove his talent – after all, how many times have we seen players apparently on the decline join us and completely revitalise their careers. And on the evidence of his contributions so far, you can add Diarra’s name to a list already containing the likes of Murphy and Duff. His confidence was evident from the moment he stepped on to the field against (an admittedly hapless) Wolves, helping himself to an assist, and several generally steady performances followed. As the weeks have passed his fitness has noticeably improved, and with it his performance level, and suddenly we seem to have a top quality defensive midfielder on our hands having not paid a single penny for him.

What is striking about the way Diarra plays the game is his astounding composure on the ball. He is almost metronomic in the way he receives the ball, looks up and moves it swiftly on, and the benefits to the fluid functioning of the midfield are huge. Another impressive aspect of his game is the way he always seems to have time on the ball, and this is of course no coincidence. His reading of the game, no doubt aided by years of experience, means he knows where the space is going to open up in midfield and is able to find comfortable pockets in which to receive the ball. His defensive game is all about positioning and timing of his tackles (again a consequence of his experience); he doesn’t go hunting the ball and charging into ferocious tackles, but is still very effective in regaining possession for the team.

All these attributes make for a pretty formidable player, and it is no surprise that he has forced his way into the starting eleven of late. In particular his recent performances against Bolton (in which he scored his first goal for the club) and Chelsea were highly impressive and also evidence of his flexibility. Having performed superbly with Dembélé in a midfield pairing against Bolton, he was used in a three-man midfield against Chelsea. Alongside Murphy, a combination that many thought would be either-or rather than both playing at the same time, were a joy to behold, outclassing the Chelsea midfield for large parts of the game. It was an interesting combination that we could be seeing more of in future, particularly away from home; having two players with such strong distribution should help us keep more possession and get a sturdier foothold in games when too often we are pushed on to the back foot.

Obviously, Diarra is not the perfect player; he is nothing like the physical specimen he was in his heyday at Madrid and, whilst he is certainly not ancient at 30, age is not on his side. Nevertheless, his addition to the squad has proved to be a very shrewd acquisition by Jol, who must be given great credit for spotting an opportunity where others did not. Diarra has an option to stay with us for next season, a clause that will surely be taken up, and when you look at how Murphy is still going strong at 35, there is no reason why Diarra can’t be an important player for the club for years to come. To think even five years ago that a player of such class would one day be donning the white shirt shows what incredible progress as a club we have made over recent seasons.

Striker swap talk denied

West Brom head coach Roy Hodgson has moved quickly to rubbish reports linking Peter Odemwingie with a part exchange move to Fulham.

It had been suggested that the former Cottagers boss was keen to team-up with Andrew Johnson again at the Hawthorns and he would head to the Midlands in a swap deal involving Odemwingie.

Hodgson however is adamant that there is no truth in the speculation as he sees the Nigerian forward as a key player in the Baggies' future plans.

He is also bemused at the rumour that Johnson is a player he is targeting this summer, even though he doesn't deny his admiration for the former Crystal Palace marksman.

Hodgson told reporters: "Peter Odemwingie is an important player for us and a player we believe in and a player we want to keep and a player who is not for sale. "

"We don't welcome offers for Peter Odemwingie.

"He is a West Brom player at the moment and will be next season.

"We want to keep him and he is under contract. Very simple really.

"It is very irritating when people just out of the blue suddenly start linking us with other players.

"I presume the link with Andy Johnson is based on the fact we worked together at Fulham and it is a player I admire as a footballer.

"He did a great job for me but, to be fair, he is not a player we've actually discussed in terms of next season."

Clint Dempsey: 22 not out
by DAN on APRIL 14, 2012

Here are all of Clint Dempsey’s goals – to date – during his magnificent season for Fulham. Well worth a look simply for the variety of different strikes (both feet, headers, inside and outside the box):

Clint Dempsey - All 2011/2012 Goals (so far)

When Clint modestly mentions a change of fortune as being the reason for his great form in front of goal, his captain quickly corrects the record. Danny Murphy’s effusive praise is both deserved and enlightening:

It’s not luck, it’s his work ethic. I’ve never trained with any one like this man. I’m telling you, it’s unbelievable. He trains hard, he plays hard, and he wants to improve all the time. And that’s why he’s scored his goals.

The Texan’s matured into some player in his time at the Cottage. Let’s hope he decides to sign on the dotted line come the summer.

TRANSFER RUMOUR ~ STRIKER BURAK YILMAZ

Fulham manager Martin Jol has been given the green light to land prolific Trabzonspor forward Burak Yilmaz, as the Cottagers plot a summer overhaul of their striking options.

In a season that has seen Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Robin van Persie all score goals for fun, little known Yilmaz has kept pace, bagging 32 goals in 30 matches for Turkish Super Lig outfit Trabzonspor, having previously endured a journeyman career with Antalyaspor, Besiktas, Manisaspor, Fenerbahce and Eskisehirspor.

Dutch tactician Jol has been receiving glowing scouting reports on the 26-year-old since the start of the season, and despite Arsenal, Ajax, CSKA Moscow and Rubin Kazan all making checks of their own in recent weeks, he is confident Fulham can convince the player to reject big money elsewhere and move to South-West London.

Indeed, a deal seemed a formality last month, when Yilmaz's representatives told Fulham that the player had set his heart on a move to the Premier League, citing it as a perfect platform to earn a regular spot in the Turkish national team.

However, a fortnight later, they had backtracked, and demanded a huge signing on fee to secure a transfer, leading to a furious Jol publicly pulling the plug, by rubbishing his interest in the striker.

The Cottagers' open threat worked - and Yilmaz's people are now happy to complete the switch, if Fulham can agree a deal with Trabzonspor - something that is the only sticking point at present, with a fee in the region of £6 million being talked up - a far cry from the £4 million Jol wants to pay.

Fulham officials are expected to meet with their Turkish counterparts before the end of the season, and after being given the financial green light from owner Mohamed Al-Fayed, they are confident an agreement can be found. .
