Finish Strong

Fixture rearrangements may have left Fulham without a match this weekend but Mahamadou Diarra insists Martin Jol’s side will not switch off for a moment as they seek to finish their season in style.

The Whites’ clash with Liverpool at Anfield, originally scheduled for this Saturday, was moved to Tuesday 1st May to make way for the Reds’ FA Cup semi-final tie with Everton.

When relegation-fighters Wigan arrive at Craven Cottage next Saturday, Fulham will have gone 12 days without a game but Diarra, who won six straight league titles with Lyon and Real Madrid, knows full well there will be no room for complacency in the home dressing room.

“All the games are difficult in England,” Diarra explained to fulhamfc.com. “There isn’t a great deal of difference between the teams so we have to regard Wigan the same as the best teams and prepare seriously because they’re coming to the Cottage to do a good job.

"We have to be ready and give our all to get the three points against Wigan. We have to keep playing like we have done in the last two games by working hard and playing as a Team. I hope the last five games can be really good for the Team and the fans.”

After making his Fulham bow as a substitute in the 5-0 victory at Wolves last month, Diarra has become a prominent figure in the manager’s plans on the pitch and is clearly enjoying life in SW6.

“I’ve been here a month now and I can say I’m really happy,” said Diarra. “I feel good because I’ve been welcomed in to the Team, and everything is good for the Team which is the most important thing.

"I’ve been in to central London one or two times and it’s very nice with nice people.  I’m really happy to be here. The weather is the only problem! But I knew that before I came because I had the chance to play here two or three times so I’ve seen it before.”

The rain may have been falling heavily during Chelsea’s visit to the Cottage on Easter Monday, but Clint Dempsey’s late equaliser left Diarra with plenty to smile about – especially after the Malian midfielder opened his goalscoring account two days earlier in the 3-0 triumph at the Reebok Stadium.

“I was really happy to score against Bolton and the Team did really well over Easter with two good results,” said Diarra.

“Now we have to keep the momentum up and our ambition must be to get as many points as possible. I think, with the players we have, anything is possible until the end of the season.”

Rivals say they have not thought about trying to sign Fulham star

Fulham transfer news: Roy Hodgson says West Brom have not thought about signing Andy Johnson

West Brom boss Roy Hodgson has rejected reports that the Baggies were looking to bring Fulham striker Andy Johnson to the Hawthorns.

There were rumours that a possible swap deal involving Johnson and Peter Odemwingie would take place at the end of the campaign.

“Peter Odemwingie is an important player for us and a player we believe in and a player we want to keep and a player who is not for sale,” said Hodgson. “We don’t welcome offers for Peter Odemwingie. He is a West Brom player at the moment and will be next season.

“We want to keep him and he is under contract. Very simple really. It is very irritating when people just out of the blue suddenly start linking us with other players.

“I presume the link with Andy Johnson is based on the fact we worked together at Fulham and it is a player I admire as a footballer. He did a great job for me but, to be fair, he is not a player we’ve actually discussed in terms of next season.”

Fulham hoping new signings will help Cottagers 'egg-cel'

Fulham have come clean over some unusual off-field fowl play after revealing they've purchase 12 hens to keep their players supplied with enough eggs.

No yolking, but Martin Jol's team get through about 90 eggs each week, and it is hoped that their latest signings can drastically reduce catering costs by £5,000 a year.

The dozen hens will live at Fulham's Motspur Park base in Surrey, providing players with organic, free range eggs. "The hens will be farmed for their eggs in a free range environment that will result in a higher quality egg for consumption by the players and staff," a statement on the Fulham website said.

"It is estimated that each of our hens is capable of laying more than 300 eggs a year and if the project is a success then more hens will be introduced over time."

After shelling out on their new feathered friends, Jol will be hoping their chicken run will help produce some egg-cellent results on the field too.

Dempsey isn't the Cottager Wenger should be after

Clint Dempsey is a player who this week has been linked with a move to the Emirates but is it another Fulham man who Arsene Wenger should look to bring from West London to Arsenal.

Mousa Dembele has been fantastic for the club by the Thames for the past two seasons and in particular since Martin Jol took charge at Craven Cottage.

The Belgian moved to Fulham as a striker and has since been reverted to a more central role and his ball keeping skills and strength on the ball are simply second to none.

Described by fellow countryman Vincent Kompany as ‘the most underrated player in the Premier League’ Dembele could be what Arsenal need to support Alex Song and Jack Wilshere in the middle.

Wenger has become a fan of the 4-3-3 formation and that is a format in which Dembele is used to playing at the Cottage.

It seems our neighbours Tottenham have also been linked with Dembele, but of course we all know Champions League football seems destined for the Emirates, maybe not White Hart Lane, and this should help attract the ex-AZ man.

His goal scoring record is his only fault, in my eyes, the way he can shrug of any player is amazing and he always seems to keep control of the ball for as long as necessary and simply looks like an Arsenal player in the waiting.

With Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on the wings, Robin Van Persie through the centre, Dembele could be the perfect fit to join Wilshere and Song and give Wenger’s side arguably the best forward six in the league.

It is thought Dembele’s price tag could be as high as £10 million, but this is a small price to pay for someone who could really help us mount a title challenge next season, also as he is a player not reliant on his pace, age becomes less of an issue and at 24 he could do at least 10 more years at the top level.

Both Mikel Arteta and Tomas Rosicky have been fantastic since the turn of the year, but I personally think adding Dembele to the squad will see him start in front of both those two.

Dempsey has been hogging the headlines and 22 goals is an absolute brilliant return for a player playing at a side like Fulham.

But he has only scored goals against three teams in the top half of the league, and this worries me what with the quality of the sides in the Champions League.

I would love to see both Dempsey and Dembele make the switch to North London, but it seems all the talk is linking us with the Texan when really Dembele is the one we should be chasing.

Hodgson: I haven't thought about AJ

Rumours were abound on Friday morning that a deal over the Summer in which Peter Odemingie would leave West Bromwich Albion and Fulham's Andrew Johnson would go the other way was becoming increasingly viable. However, West Brom manager and former Fulham boss, Roy Hodgson, has now moved to deny the possibility on both counts.

Johnson is now highly expected to leave Craven Cottage at the end of this campaign with his contract due to expire in June. There have been murmurs circulating that the former Crystal Palace forward may be on the verge of signing a new deal but nothing has come close to being confirmed yet. Martin Jol has always been quick to sing his praises but it was thought, that with Hodgson's obvious connection with Johnson - he brought him to Fulham in 2008 - that he may well jump at the chance to take him to the Hawthorns.

In return, he would put Peter Odemwingie on a plate, having supposedly fallen out with the Nigerian forward earlier in the season. Despite this rift, though, Odemwingie has still impressed under Hodgson this year, scoring nine goals.

As such, his manager made it clear that he didn't see Odemwingie leaving the Midlands and, on top of that, the former Fulham boss claimed Andrew Johnson hadn't even crossed his mind.

"Peter Odemwingie is an important player for us and a player we believe in and a player we want to keep and a player who is not for sale," said Hodgson. "We don't welcome offers for Peter Odemwingie. He is a West Brom player at the moment and will be next season.

"We want to keep him and he is under contract. Very simple really. It is very irritating when people just out of the blue suddenly start linking us with other players.

"I presume the link with Andy Johnson is based on the fact we worked together at Fulham and it is a player I admire as a footballer. He did a great job for me but, to be fair, he is not a player we've actually discussed in terms of next season."

Clint Dempsey: Will He Stay or Will He Go?

Clint Dempsey has been the unquestionable player of the year for Fulham, scoring 22 goals
(and counting)

Editor’s note: This post is by Austin Beacham, who will be helping me with posts on the site, since I’ve had a hard time posting regularly.  I’ll still be running the site and making posts, but he will be helping to add content. Austin’s been reading Fulham’s Finest regularly for over a year now. To give some background, he’s been a fan of Fulham for several years – since he saw them live against Portsmouth in 2007, and has followed them seriously since after the 2010 World Cup.  Please welcome Austin and treat his posts like you would mine!  -Kyle

It’s time to talk about Fulham’s main man for the past two seasons: Clint Dempsey. He’s been in fantastic form for a long time now, and that’s coincided with inexorable speculation over his future. This summer will basically be the last good chance to get any money out of him, in my opinion. I don’t see many teams that Clint would be interested in moving to being willing to pay proper money for him next January, so if he is going to be sold, rather than leaving for free, it’ll be this summer. In addition, I don’t think with the way this club is run and the way Martin Jol has dealt with transfers so far that he’ll be allowed to leave for nothing in 2013. So, essentially, I think that if he’s to be sold, he’ll be sold this summer.

Clint’s said himself that he won’t make a decision until this summer, so although there is an offer on the table, don’t expect anything to happen until then. To me, that statement from the Texan sounds like he’ll wait to see what offers Fulham receives from other clubs before he signs or doesn’t. And honestly, I don’t think Fulham fans could expect anything else. He’s given everything for the club since he’s been here and has been an incredible asset to the team for a long time now. He’s never hidden the fact that he wants to play in the Champions League, and it doesn’t seem to me that Fulham supporters could have much to complain about for that. The last great thing he could do for the club would be to bring in a hefty transfer fee so that we could adequately replace him. He’ll be difficult to replace directly, but a good chunk of money certainly wouldn’t help.

So, on to what I think. The answer isn’t as clear cut as many seem to think it is. I think his departure, or lack thereof, will completely depend on who comes in for him, and whether the price is right. If a club like Arsenal (as has been rumoured) come in for him, I think he’s gone. He won’t pass up the chance to play for a club at that level, for multiple reasons. I think, first of all, he personally wants to prove himself on that level. He won’t worry too much about initial playing time – he’s had to deal with managers not playing him for much of his time at Fulham, and has proved himself capable every time. He may not get an automatic start at a legitimate Champions League club, but he’ll get enough time to stay satisfied. I also feel that he wants to play in the Champions League to do so as an American. He speaks often of needing to prove himself that little bit more because he’s of his nationality, and I think that shows that his country is on his mind. He, as cheesy as it sounds, wants to do it for the USA.

To follow up on the Arsenal link, I have to disagree with people who say he wouldn’t fit in Wenger’s system out wide. It’s true that Gervinho and Walcott were the first choice at the beginning of the season, which essentially meant pace, trickery, and direct attacks. Clint doesn’t fit that description, but he could play the role that the left winger has been playing lately – that of a wide midfielder, able to drift inside and link up, as well as give Arsenal’s attacking left-back room to operate. Yossi Benayoun, Aaron Ramsey, and Tomas Rosicky (and even Samir Nasri last season) played that role, and I believe Deuce could excel in such a position. Wenger especially uses this tactic in big games in order to keep possession, and once again I think Dempsey could play that role, such as – oddly enough – in the Champions League! It would be out of character for Arsenal’s manager to pay a hefty fee for a 28-year-old, but he showed with Mikel Arteta last summer that he’s willing to splash on quality. That, coupled with Dempsey’s versatility (he could conceivably play either wing, striker, or the CAM role at Arsenal) make this transfer more likely than some seem to think.

Besides Arsenal, which seems to be the main club, there is reported interest from Liverpool, Schalke, Roma, and the Spanish trio of Valenica, Sevilla, and Malaga. Liverpool it seems could be eliminated due to their total lack of Champions League football and, truth be told, they don’t seem to be moving in that direction at all. Roma is an interesting one, due to their American owners, but once again actual Champions League football seems a stretch for a least a couple of seasons for them. The Spanish clubs each have their owns issues with qualification, except perhaps Valencia, but it’d be surprising to see Valencia splash. They’re deep in debt and have been following a transfer policy of buying young and unknown and selling for as much profit as possible, and Dempsey wouldn’t fit that at all. If Malaga qualify they could be a possibility (I bought him on FIFA 12 for them!), but they’d have to work out their strange transfer ban situation first. Sevilla, lastly, don’t look likely to qualify, so I wouldn’t see the point there. So that leaves Schalke, who will more than likely be in the Champions League next year. If one of Raul or Klaas Jan Huntelaar leave, this seems a real possibility, but I don’t know enough about Schalke’s situation to say much more. He could conceivably get time out wide, and they do have another American in Jermaine Jones at the club, so, once again, it seems possible.

So that covers most of the known clubs “in” for the Deuce. While I think Arsenal would be slightly surprising, they are a real possibility. But I think a club like Schalke is the most likely to nab him – a club that has qualified and doesn’t look like getting worse next season. Perhaps PSG? They would be interested in a shirt-seller like Deuce, but one of Nene, Jeremy Menez, or Pastore would need to move for this to be likely. Lille is possible, as he could work as a replacement for the almost-certainly-leaving Eden Hazard on the left wing. In general, clubs like these are those that I see being interested in him. I think there will certainly be offers in the summer, but if the price isn’t right or the club not right, Deuce will stay. He does enjoy Fulham and living in London, so I think the situation will need to be very specific for him to depart.

The last thing I’ll mention is that people saying that he doesn’t have the quality for the Champions League are insane. Fourth top scorer in one of the two best leagues in the world, Fulham’s all time single-season and overall top scorer in the Premier League, a fantastic strike rate for the United States, versatility galore – what more could a club want? He’s not on that very top level, and is a bit of a tweener (number 3 in this article for an explanation), but many many clubs in the Champions League could use his knack for scoring, tenacity, and utility. There does seem to be a bias against Americans in this respect – if he was an Englishmen he’d surely have a suitor from every top club in the league. Same goes a Spaniard or – of course – a Brazilian. While I’d love to see Clint stay at Fulham, as a USA fan I also wouldn’t mind seeing the man in the Champions League – he’s earned it. Whatever happens, he’s earned the admiration of every Fulham supporter and should be respected regardless of the decision he makes.

So that concludes my first post. I hope you enjoyed it, and please feel free to comment with your opinion or general discussion!

MARTIN JOL CAN’T BE TAKING £5M PRICE TAG SERIOUSLY, SURELY?

Fulham look to gain the upper hand over their Premier League rivals, by beating them to the marquee signing of Aberdeen’s Fraser Fyvie.

Martin Jol’s Fulham revolution looks to be gathering pace. If reports from the Daily Mirror are anything to go by, which i’m sure you’d agree they most certainly are, then the Cottagers are about to nab a real gem with the signing of Fraser Fyvie.

And Scotsman Fyvie clearly fancies his chances moving to the big league, with the 19-year-old Aberdeen-born starlet telling Dons manager Craig Brown he has no intention of signing a new contract at Pittodrie when his current deal expires at the end of the year.

Fyvie revealed all to the Daily Record, stating:

“I need to go to progress my career. I feel it’s the right time for me to try my luck elsewhere and see what happens.”

”I may be taking a big gamble but sometimes you have to take a risk. I feel I want to go and challenge myself.”

Boss Brown put a ludicrous £5million price-tag on the sought after player in February, and warned the teenager that those who have abandoned the comforts of Pittodrie early in their careers have failed to fulfil their potential elsewhere.
But the SPL side may be forced to sell the player against their will, or receive a mere compensation package when he leaves under freedom of his current deal.

Fulham, who only recently signed Fyvie’s former team mate Jack Grimmer for £200,000, were close to a deal for the midfielder last year but ultimately opted against paying out the budget busting £1 million fee. The player, who’s also of interest to Norwich, has scored twice in 55 appearances for the Dandies.

How Clint’s climbed to the top of the pile
by DAN on APRIL 14, 2012

Fulham fan Archie Rhind-Tutt has kindly allowed us to post his thoughts on Clint Dempsey’s superb season as a guest post.

“He scores with his left, he scores with his right, that boy Clint Dempsey, makes Drogba look…”

Let’s put it this way, the final word to this song is not contrite. Of late however, contrite would be an accurate reflection when comparing Clint Dempsey and Didier Drogba. It does seem somewhat bizarre to be mentioning the players in the same sentence considering how revered a striker Didier Drogba was, not just in the Premier League, but worldwide.

Yet now, Fulham’s No.23 almost seems to have overtaken him (though Drogba is 34-years-old). In the Premier League, Dempsey is even outscoring the Blues Frank Lampard by netting 16 goals compared to the Englishman’s 11. Strictly, Dempsey is an attacking midfielder who works best when playing off a striker. Nevertheless, his league goals for Fulham have resulted in further recognition.

Craven Cottage has been enjoying the American’s performances for just over five years now and along the way he’s scored some important goals– whether it was the strike to secure Fulham’s survival in 2007 or the impudent chip against Juventus in 2010, Dempsey is regarded highly by all at Fulham.

After he’d netted yet another goal, this time against Chelsea, Club Captain Danny Murphy praised his team-mate in the post-match interview as the American tried to play off his recent run of form as lucky.

“It’s not luck. It’s his work ethic. I’ve never trained with anyone like this man [Clint Dempsey]. He’s unbelievable. He plays hard. He trains hard and he wants to improve all the time…He deserves the credit because he’s been fantastic for us.”

Murphy’s right – the American’s performances have merited praise. His all round game is good but there have been some subtle improvements to it, which has led to the tremendous campaign Dempsey’s enjoying. For example, his anticipation has been superb. The timing of his runs into the box and his poacher’s instinct when goalkeepers spill rebounds are two areas in particular where he has excelled. His late winner against Liverpool illustrated this. Danny Murphy’s tame shot was unexpectedly parried by Pepe Reina. There was Dempsey putting pressure on the ‘keeper and subsequently scoring the rebound.

What’s more some of the goals he has scored suggest the American has been working on his balance and core strength. This makes him much harder to knock off the ball and it means, due to the good technique he possesses, he is a far more dangerous player when going for spectacular efforts, of which there have been a few this season. This in turn has helped to make him a stronger finisher as the 22 goals in all competitions suggests. With all of this comes confidence, something which cannot be underestimated in the development of any player.

Now this analysis of Dempsey’s attributes is not to say he was a bad player before, for he wasn’t weak in any of these areas previously –far from it. He has merely built on them and like all greats, he is prepared to keep working, continuing to find ways to improve. Unsurprisingly, with Dempsey’s fine form, speculation has increased as to whether the attacking midfielder will soon leave Craven Cottage with a year left on his contract.

Should a club with Champions League football come calling it’s hard to see Dempsey staying. However, the American will realise he will be first choice at Fulham, playing and starting every single week. Should he move, Dempsey will be aware he’ll be rotated more due to the larger squads which bigger clubs have. Unless he moves to local rivals Chelsea or QPR, as Bobby Zamora did, it’s hard to see many Fulham fans resenting a move. That said Martin Jol has said how keen he is to keep Dempsey which is understandable.

The Dutch manager is fortunate not only to have Dempsey in his attacking armoury. He also has players such as Mousa Dembele and Bryan Ruiz. Their approach is less direct than Dempsey, who heads for goal with the ball at his feet. Dembele and Ruiz have a little more subtlety to their game, such is the quality of control they have. This contrasts well with Dempsey and most importantly for Martin Jol, it helps to give Fulham balance when going forward.

Unlike Dembele and Ruiz, Dempsey’s direct style is rewarded with goals. The American is the fourth top scorer in the Premier League this season – another impressive achievement. Whilst Fulham fans will of course be desperate to see Dempsey continue to don a white shirt, they should be pleased their comparison of their American hero with Didier Drogba is looking much more accurate than it once was.

CLINT DEMPSEY NOT GUNNER SIGN YET

FULHAM striker Clint Dempsey will wait until the summer before deciding his future – opening the door for a move to Arsenal.

The Gunners are one of several clubs keen on Yank Dempsey, 29, whose Easter Monday strike against Chelsea was his 22nd of the season.

Dempsey who cost Fulham £2.5million in 2006, is out of contract after next season and the club are already offering a huge hike in wages to ensure he stays.

But even Fulham manager Martin Jol admits he does not know if he can keep the “unbelievable” Texan.

Dempsey said: “We will see what happens. I am talking with the club but we will have to see what happens in the summer.

“I want to focus on this season and my football and other stuff can take care of itself after the season.”

Jol said: “I can’t predict the future. We want to keep him and hopefully he wants to stay. We have offered him a very good deal.

“He knows he is very appreciated at our club. If we want to be a top side we need players who can score more than 20 goals a season.

“I have always had that – I can remember Luis Suarez scoring 53 for me at Ajax.

“He’s not at that level yet but for a wide midfield player who can play up front and score that many goals, it is unbelievable.”

Striker's Target

Orlando Sa has endured a frustrating spell on the sidelines in recent months due to injury but having returned to action as a second half substitute against Chelsea on Easter Monday, the 23-year-old striker is now hoping for further game time before the end of the season.

“It was a really good game on Monday night against Chelsea and it was great to play again after a few months out with a hamstring injury,” Sa told fulhamfc.com.

“Now I want to train hard to get stronger and earn more minutes on the pitch before the end of the season.

“It’s been a difficult time for me with the injury but I want to help the Team to get as many points and wins as possible over the next few weeks.”

After joining FFC on a free transfer last summer following a spell at Portuguese side Porto, Sa made his mark with a stunning strike against Norwich at Carrow Road on New Year’s Eve as Martin Jol’s team drew 1-1 with the Canaries.

Sa’s progress has been held up by injury but having now returned to fitness the striker is desperate to pick up where he left off at the tail end of 2011.

“The football is very different in England to what I experienced in Portugal,” Sa explained. “In England you have to be much stronger and train much harder.

“The hamstring injury was frustrating for me but I feel good again now. It’s very important to train really hard and it takes time to adapt but now I feel physically and psychologically strong now I am fit again.”

FULHAM YET TO RECEIVE AN OFFICIAL BID FOR DEMPSEY

Clint Dempsey is going to be a player in demand this summer on the back of comfortably the most productive of his six seasons at Fulham.

But there is no guarantee that the anticipated stampede of interest will materialise into a transfer to a Champions League calibre club for the 22-goal midfielder.

Fulham have received plenty of enquiries about the 29-year-old in recent windows, with Arsenal and Liverpool among those expressing an interest.

Nevertheless, The Sweeper has learned that the west Londoners have not received a single official bid for Dempsey since he joined the club in the second half of the 2006-07 season.
