Fulham v Chelsea ~ Player Ratings
by LORK on APRIL 16, 2012

Firstly let me apologise for the delay in these player ratings; however, they are being written under tragic circumstances. No-one likes to be awake before 7 am without their consent, much less a Uni student. Apologies if this comes through in my writing. But it presents me an extra hour in the day I wouldn’t otherwise have to write these up so, silver linings etc.

The time between the game and now hasn’t dulled the exhilerating feeling of experiencing last Monday’s SW6 derby either. A fairly open game where both sides, in stages, demonstrated their quality but I think it’s fair to say that we showed it more than them over the 90 and if it weren’t for a hugely dodgy penalty then we could have seen that reflected in the result.

Schwarzer – 6, againm another quiet game for Mark in goal! And that is huge testament to our defence. Thought his kicking could have been better but I can’t really remember him being forced into a real save or Chelsea bombarding him with crosses.

Hangeland – 7, another solid contribution from the lanky Norwegian. Blocks, solid marking, reliable as always when balls came into the box. Played a majestic ball down the left for Riise too.

Hughes – 7.5, I thought Hughes outshone Hangeland for the simple fact that he had the job (whether by choice or by demand) of looking after Torres, and the Spaniard barely had a kick. A few times he tried to peel off Hughes for the long diagonal but the defender covered him perfectly. Not to mention his vital tradmark interceptions from other incisive Chelsea passes. Also, it’s notable just how  much Hughes has improved on the ball. We used to expect long balls down the channel; not any more, as he’s gathered a composure and confidence which enables the simple ball to be played effectively.

Kelly – 7.5, Kelly again continues his impressive vein of form. Kalou, despite being much parodied by the footballing world, can be fairly tricky on his day but his attacking contribution was nullified other than two fairly big moments; the first being the pen for a foul by Kelly which never was and the second a free header when he stole in between the centre halves but contrived to miss spectacuarly. Always willing to go forward too, Kelly was present in our offensive, as well as defensive, play.

Riise – 8.5, the most impressive aspect of our play was undoubtably the domination we had down our left hand side. The first half of our armoury on that flank was the full back Riise who had an absolute field day. Russ Goldman actually picked him out as a candidate for suprise performer of the match and that foresight turned out to be accurate as Riise surged forward with impressive resolve and quality. Pushing up so far as to break the Chelsea offside trap several times, firing in crosses too, but also defending well; my favourite Riise moment of the game was when he was injured and despite being way out of position chased back and performed a diving salmon leap to clear a pass out for a throw in. In a sense his defensive duties were helped by Ramires being played out wide, who despite possessing great athleticism isn’t a winger really at all. However, if Ramires was played there to neutralise Riise as an attacking threat then there was only one winner in that battle.

Murphy – 7, our captain was afforded extra space and freedom in the three  man midfield and as usual he used it wisely. Spreading passes around for fun and knitting our defensive and offensive unit together neatly, along with snappy tackles and good defensive covering. Not sure why he came off early.

Diarra – 8, a masterclass in anticipation and interception. Diarra read the game beautifully from a defensive point of view and I lost count of the number of times he cut out Chelsea passes and broke up attacks with those interceptions and tackles, as well as covering runners from midfield. A couple of slack passes but his possession game was fairly sweet as we are beginning to expect from him; collecting the ball and moving it on swiftly and with intelligence.

Dembele – 7, a return to form of sorts. Dembele definately had more influence in the middle of the pitch than he had done in previous couple of games, perhaps aided with the relative staticness of Mikel and Lampard who Dembele can just drift pass effortlessly, and did. Joined attacks, but I am concerned with this apparent drop off in form after what initially appeared to be a masterstroke.

Frei – 8.5, part two of our left flank domination. Frei was exceptional against Chelsea last Monday. I cannot remember the last time I went to a game and expected something exciting to happen when a specific player recieved the ball. He tore Ivanovic to shreds, one of the premier right backs in the league. In a sense, he possibly should have done more with the opportunities he created for himself, but what a talent. My favourite thing about Frei is that he looks like he’s losing the ball every time he runs with it but it’s still totally under his control! (see: his run when he took on four Chelsea players and forced Cech into a save). He also suits Riise more than Kacaniklic. However I really would like to see him go down the outside, just once! Very impressive.

Duff – 7, not as dynamic as Frei but still had his part to play in the game. He covered Cole well, and when attacking was wise with the ball and didn’t lose it rashly, although we didn’t see him do too much damage to the defence. Nice corner taking though. We could have scored 3 in the 20 minutes he was taking them.

Dempsey – 8, you can’t stop this man. Even if he’s outnumbered with a defensive midfielder shielding balls into him he still played the forward role well, dropping off, turning at goal and doing damage (however it would have been interesting to see how we would have played with Pogrebnyak), playing a key role in our performance. And with his first, and only, solid attempt at goal, he scores. It took a deflection, that was obvious watching it live, which could get it taken away from him but let’s give it to him for now and marvel at the achievement of scoring 22 goals in a season.

~Subs~

Etuhu – 6.5, came on for Murphy and I was worried because I thought it’d disrupt our attacking patterns, and to be fair it did to an extent. However we needed him when Chelsea really pushed in the last few minutes and he did well.

Sa – N/A, nice to see Sa return after so long out but it will be interesting to see what happens to him come the end of the season. Did ok in his few minutes on the pitch and offered a bit of an outlet

Kacaniklic – N/A, replaced Frei for a few minutes. Little time to do anything really.

Reserves Face Rovers

Fulham’s in-form Development Squad are back in action this afternoon when they take on Blackburn Rovers at their Senior Training Centre (KO 2pm).

Ray Lewington’s side have won four matches in a row and have hit 15 goals in the process. Their last two league matches were 5-1 and 5-0 victories over Norwich City and Newcastle United respectively, whilst they also enjoyed a 3-2 win against West Ham in a friendly outing.

Rovers’ Reserve side have struggled for form this season and currently sit bottom of the Barclays Premier Reserve League North table with just 15 points and two league wins all season. They are also the only side in either group to fail to register a home win so far this campaign.

They go into today’s game on the back of a win though after doing Fulham a favour by defeating West Brom by two goals to nil. Albion are only a point ahead of the Whites in the Southern League and so if they avoid defeat this afternoon, Ray Lewington’s charges will climb to third.

They’ll be facing a young Blackburn side which features a considerable amount of players from their successful Academy team who knocked Fulham’s conquerors Burnley out of the FA Youth Cup in their semi-final tie. How many of those youngsters play this afternoon remains to be seen though as it’s the first leg of their Youth Cup Final versus Chelsea this Friday.

West Brom and Aston Villa to scrap over former England striker
Eight-cap Andy Johnson interesting Midlands clubs as Fulham contract winds down

With his contract due to expire in the summer, Andy Johnson is set to become one of the hottest free transfers available, with West Brom and Aston Villa declaring an early interest.

Johnson has been offered an extension to his Fulham contract, but is unwilling to accept a two-year deal at Craven Cottage, instead keen to obtain the security that comes with a three-year deal.

He has hit 11 goals this term in a season where he has been in and out of the side, though his exit could pave the way for a permanent move for Russian striker Pavel Pogrebnyak, and manager Martin Jol may therefore not see the retention of Johnson as a priority.

The vultures are beginning to circle in light of this, and Johnson’s former boss Roy Hodgson will hope to offer the 31-year-old the lengthier contract that he craves at West Brom.

Hodgson is a big fan of Johnson’s tireless endeavour, and is desperate to shake up his attacking options, with Peter Odemwingie, Chris Wood and Simon Cox all potential outgoings in the striker department come the summer.

Baggies boss Hodgson would free up the necessary wages to attract Johnson by letting Odemwingie go, so could welcome the interest in the Nigerian that he was so keen to fend off last summer.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa manager Alex McLeish is also willing to offer former Birmingham striker Johnson a return to the Midlands.

McLeish has been told by frustrated Villa owner Randy Lerner that he must re-build his squad with free transfers, and Johnson fits the bill, though his excessive wage demands could prove a stumbling block.

Lerner has placed a £40,000 per week wage cap on new Villa signings, and this could put West Brom in the driving seat for his signature, indicating that Johnson could be set for a reunion with his former Fulham boss at the Hawthorns.

A Life Changer

The 2011/12 season will always be a year that Kerim Frei looks back on with great fondness and the winger crowned his twentieth First Team appearance with a Man of the Match display against Chelsea in our last outing.

It is easy to forget that the Swiss youth international only turned 18 in November, such is the confidence he has displayed whenever he has turned out for Martin Jol’s side.

“This season so far has changed my life,” Kerim told fulhamfc.com. “I’m very happy with how it is going but I know that I need to keep working hard because there’s still a lot to play for.

“I think seventh place in the League is a realistic target. We are a very good Team so we can keep climbing the table. We just have to keep working hard and then hopefully everything will be good.”

Having represented Fulham in all four competitions we’ve played in this season, there are plenty of positive memories for the teenager to look back on with pride.

“The win against Arsenal was a highlight for me when we won 2-1 at home,” Kerim said. “We were losing when I came on as a substitute so I was quite happy with my performance that night.

“But then of course my debut was a great feeling too. Then there is the game at Stamford Bridge when I started my first match against Chelsea - it's just a shame we lost that one on penalties. I’ve had a few good moments this year that I'll never forget.”

IS FULHAM’S SWISS SENSATION A STAR IN THE MAKING?

When he joined Fulham from Swiss side Grasshoppers in 2010, Kerim Frei was a sixteen year-old who many wouldn’t have heard of. However, he had sprung onto the radar of many European clubs around the time as he was obviously thought highly of and became sought after, with Fulham being the ones to secure his signature. He made his move to London and was inducted into their youth team, where he felt at home and comfortable that his style was compatible with that of the under 18′s at the time.

A couple of years down the line and Frei is turning heads in the Premier League. It’s often easier for players of his type, the tricky attacking wingers, to make an impression when they are introduced onto a bigger stage because all it takes is one goal or nice bit of play for fans to remember the name. However Frei appears to be maintaining his level of performance and proving himself to be a valuable member of the first team.

When he first moved to England, like many others, he noticed the difference in terms of the physicality of the English game. But commendably, when he was still new to this way of football, he said “I’m not going to change the way I play though, I will always try and make things happen for the team. I love having the ball at my feet and taking players on.” This has proven to be the case in recent weeks, but he shows maturity and development beyond his years in the fact that he does get his head up and build team moves as opposed to blindly running like a bull to a red rag.

The eighteen year-old winger has recently signed a contract extension to keep him at the club until 2015. Although bigger clubs may come in with offers on the table in the not too distant future, the fact that Frei has put pen to paper now is a good sign for Fulham fans because it signals his intent to stay at the club and play as much football as he can. Martin Jol said in mid-March that “He listens and works hard on the training pitch, and his improvement since I started has been very impressive, so much so that I now consider him very much part of the first team squad.” So it seems as though Kerim has strong backing and encouragement coming from his manager which is important for young foreign players in their first few years in English football.

The 2011/12 campaign could potentially be the breakthrough season for Frei, where he gets properly established into the first team and possibly the starting eleven. He currently has 20 appearances in all competitions for Fulham and scored his first goal in a Europa League tie against Odense in December. Although being used sparingly in the league and major games so far, Kerim has played against Chelsea three times already, each match resulting in a draw, and has looked impressive on the occasions he has figured. He offers a good outlet down the left channel, an avenue which he can look to expose. He does so in a confident but intelligent manner, running at wing backs and cutting inside, but also holding the ball up nearer the corner and laying it back to a team mate when necessary.

In his first season in the Premier League you couldn’t really ask for much more from Kerim Frei with the opportunities he has been given. Fulham are are great side for him to develop in because although they won’t be challenging for top six, they have a pretty stable team with experienced and talented footballers. He has people like Dembele, Murphy and Dempsey who not only play decent football and get results for the team, but who work extremely hard on and off the ball. This takes the pressure is off of the youngster’s shoulders but at the same time the work ethic and motivation is there, which should help Frei develop into a quality member of the Fulham team over the next couple of years.

Clint Dempsey - A Case of Irrational Exuberance?

With four teams involved in the semi finals of the FA Cup over the weekend Fulham was spared a trip to Anfield to play Liverpool in the Premier League.

Over the last eight decades Fulham has never won away to Liverpool but when they do get around to playing the rescheduled fixture on May 1 the team from London might be a little bit more confident than that dreadful record might suggest.

A primary reason is the USA’s Clint Dempsey. Dempsey is having a career defining season and with five games remaining he has already scored 16 goals in the league and 22 in all competitions.

Without Dempsey’s goals Fulham would be 9 points poorer. For a side such as Fulham, it is the difference between challenging for a top seven place and being in constant danger of being sucked into a relegation battle.

While averaging close to a goal every two games Dempsey has never gone more than three games without a goal this season in league play. It is even more impressive when you consider he’s played most games as a midfield player or as a support striker.

Nominally a wide midfield player, Dempsey does his damage when he operates more centrally. Fulham manager Martin Jol has shown an increasing willingness to allow Dempsey that option this season.

A consistent goal scoring threat from midfield is a much sought after quality and also quite rare. The skills required of a top class midfield player rarely overlap with the skills of a specialized goal scorer and so goal scoring midfield players tend to mature a bit later.

Frank Lampard of Chelsea is the top scoring midfield player in Barclay’s Premier League history and at age 33 he is still banging in goals. Lampard has hit double figures in league scoring for the ninth consecutive season but he never reached double digits until he was 25 and by then he had played eight seasons in the top-tier of English soccer.

Clint Dempsey was 24 and with only three seasons of Major League Soccer under his belt when he moved to Fulham from the New England Revolution for around $4M in 2007. He adapted quickly to his new environment, perhaps helped by Fulham’s penchant for US players.

Over the last decade or so Brian McBride, Carlos Bocanegra, Eddie Johnson, Kasey Keller and Marcus Hahnemann have all stopped off to play at Craven Cottage with varying degrees of success. (It has done no harm to Fulham’s standing in North America either with the team probably now enjoying the largest fan base outside the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool.)

McBride, from 2004 to 2008, served Fulham with distinction and finished his time as club captain and their joint all-time leading scorer in the Premier League. It is a record now held by Dempsey.

McBride’s physical resilience is another common trait with Dempsey. In a 38 game schedule Dempsey has never played in less than 29 games in a full season and has  never started less than 27.

Twenty goals in his first 110 games for Fulham gave some clue to his eventual emergence as a consistent goal scorer. He plays with immense confidence and he also possesses that magical quality of finding time and space in and around the opposition penalty area where others either panic or are unable to shake-off tight marking defenders.

This season Dempsey is not only shooting more but he has been more accurate and his chance conversion rate is 33% better than in any other season.

But his game has improved in other areas as well. Dempsey is winning more tackles and more head balls, he is passing more often and he is passing more accurately. What is more he is creating many more chances for his team mates as well.

He is a player who is at the top of his game.

But therein is the dilemma. Dempsey’s current contract with Fulham is up in the summer of 2013 and that means that decision time is fast approaching.

Normally a club looking to retain a player’s services will offer a contract extension somewhere between 24 and 12 months before the expiry date.

The player has the option of accepting a new offer or refusing to renew. If Dempsey opts for the latter then two things will happen. The club could try to sell him this summer or it could accept that the “asset” will walk away in a year’s time and the club will get nothing in return.

The player also has the right to turn down a transfer and instead become a free agent in 2013 – that constitutes a gamble as his form may slip or injuries may take a toll. Both or either would impact on contract offers from other teams.

However, more often than not, any team that is willing to pay a transfer fee knows that the financial terms offered to the player have to be substantially better than he currently receives in order to garner a contract signature.

The cumulative effect of a US player enjoying a career season in one of the world’s top league and a contract expiring in a year’s time has sent North American chat boards and fan sites into overdrive.

A possibility of a transfer to one of the big teams in England (now regarded as the two Manchester teams, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Liverpool) have been discussed so often that it almost has a feel of fait accompli.

A fee of $15M+ is being tossed around as well. And it is not only North American fans that are piling on but the English press are now actively pumping the story for all that is worth.

The Daily Mail got in the game last week suggesting that Dempsey is off to Arsenal at a cost of $16M “after regular scouting reports since the turn of the year convinced Arsene Wenger he would fit perfectly into their system.” Now Dempsey may move to Arsenal (personally I doubt it) but to suggest that he would fit perfectly into the Arsenal system is contrived and inaccurate. Simply, Arsenal empathize width – Fulham play narrow.

All-in-all it has an air of – to borrow another phrase from another time – “irrational exuberance” about it. But the Daily Mail did pinpoint the two key elements – the need for the player to fit the system (Fulham’s system has served Dempsey very well) and the possible fee.

None of the big clubs mentioned before operate a similar system to Fulham, at least on a regular basis. Manchester United does from time to time but Dempsey is not going to usurp Wayne Rooney.

There is also the reality of UEFA Financial Play kicking in and that means clubs are going to be a lot more careful before paying out big money.

Dempsey just turned 29 last month and with a four year contract a likely demand, it means that his resale value will be miniscule when time is called on his next contract.

The transfer market trend is towards young players who have yet to peak rather than buying mature players at the top of the market.

Fulham and Dempsey may well decide that they should part ways this summer. But if it happens there are a number of reasons why the move may be more modest than most currently anticipate or even expect.

Schools Tournament

Fulham Football Club Foundation, alongside Disney XD’s Goalmouth series, ran the 2012 regional heats for the prestigious Premier League Schools Tournament this March at the Club’s training ground in Motspur Park. Corpus Christi Primary School from Kingston and the Elm Green School from Lambeth won their tournaments (Mixed Under 11s and Girls Under 13s respectively), securing places at the final of the nationwide tournament, set to be held at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium on 9th May 2012.

Corpus Christi Primary School and the Elm Green School will now both represent Fulham Football Club and go head to head against nineteen other schools in the final. The players from both groups will receive an authentic experience, from wearing Fulham FC club kit, using the same dressing rooms as their local club use on a match-day, to walking down the tunnel to the Premier League anthem. The teams will even be refereed by six Premier League match officials.

Established six years ago, the tournament gives school football teams nationwide the chance to team up with their local Premier League club, and play alongside some of the biggest names from the sport.

Disney XD’s ‘Goalmouth’ is to broadcast the highs and lows of the tournament exclusively, with the new season airing from Thursday 26th April at 5.30pm. To ensure you don’t miss any of the competition, watch Disney XD and keep up-to-date with how Corpus Christi and the Elm Green School are doing.

Pogrebnyak puts down roots
Fulham striker moves into Mourinho's old house

Pavel Pogrebnyak: Fulham striker has bought a house in London

Pavel Pogrebnyak has fuelled rumours his switch to Fulham could become long-term after moving into Jose Mourinho's old house in London.

The striker, who arrived from Stuttgart in January, held a house warming party at the property that is situated close to Craven cottage.

The deadline day signing during the most recent transfer window has been an instant hit since his arrival at Fulham, netting five times in seven appearances.

The Russia international will be a free agent in the summer when his current contract expires.

"I like my life in London very much," he told Russian website Tden.

"Branislav Ivanocivc, Ramires and Frank Lampard from Chelsea live in my neighbourhood as well as the players of Fulham.

"Jose Mourinho lived in my house before."

Fulham striker hints at extending stay at Craven Cottage

Fulham transfer news: Pavel Pogrebnyak is enjoying life in London

Fulham striker Pavel Pogrebnyak has given the biggest hint yet that he could be extending his spell with the west London club.

The Russian joined the Whites on a loan deal from German side Stuttgart and has scored five goals for Martin Jol’s side.

With the player available on a free in the summer it is thought Aston Villa were interested in securing his services, however Pogrebnyak’s latest comments seem to suggest he is set to stay in the capital.

“I like my life in London very much,” he told Russian website Tden.

“Branislav Ivanoivc, Ramires and Frank Lampard from Chelsea live in my neighbourhood as well as the players of Fulham.

“Jose Mourinho lived in my house before.”

Physical Peak

All across the Premier League, players are running on empty after a long and gruelling campaign – but not John Arne Riise, who believes he’s entering the business end of the season in the peak of physical fitness.

Riise has been in inspiring form over the Easter period, not only helping earn a clean sheet at Bolton and shutting out Chelsea from open play at Craven Cottage, but also providing an important attacking imputes on Fulham’s left-hand side.

Paying little regard to energy conservation, the Norwegian sprinted the length of the pitch after 80 minutes to assist Mahamadou Diarra’s first Fulham goal in the 3-0 victory at the Reebok Stadium and, after a similar lung-busting charge, he almost opened his own account for the Whites in the SW6 derby.

Two games in three days may have taken their toll on some players, but the 31-year-old insists that he still feels in tip-top condition and is determined to finish the season on a high.

“I’m feeling very good physically, I’m back to my best again and feeling like running all day,” Riise told fulhamfc.com. “Against Chelsea, with another game two days after the Bolton game, I felt really good and I think I’ve reached my physical peak now.

“It’s nice to have a break after two games in three days and it does help to get some energy back at this stage of the season and helps us enjoy training.

“We are on a high now after getting four points from two games and we playing as well as we did against Chelsea, so we’re just refreshing at the moment and trying to get ready for Wigan.

“It’s nice to know at the end of the season that I’m still feeling strong, so hopefully I can keep going for these last five games and come back nice and strong for the whole of the next season as well.”

Fulham striker Pogrebnyak purchases Mourinho's old house
The Russian striker, who has netted five goals so far for Martin Jol's side, has fuelled rumours that he could be set for a longer stay in London by buying a property

Fulham striker Pavel Pogrebnyak has fuelled rumours that he could be set to pen a long-term deal, after moving into a London house formerly owned by Jose Mourinho.

The former Zenit St Petersburg man, who arrived in London on a six-month loan from Stuttgart in January, is a free agent in the summer.

However, the forward, who has netted five goals so far for the Cottagers, recently held a housewarming party at the property.

Fulham boss Jol battling to hold onto Manchester United and Arsenal target Dempsey

Fulham boss Martin Jol is unsure he can keep hold of his star man Clint Dempsey.

The American has been linked with Manchester United and Arsenal.

Jol said: “I can’t predict the future. We want to keep him and hopefully he wants to stay. We have offered him a very good deal.

“He knows he is very appreciated at our club. If we want to be a top side we need players who can score more than 20 goals a season.

“I have always had that – I can remember Luis Suarez scoring 53 for me at Ajax.

“He’s not at that level yet but for a wide midfield player who can play up front and score that many goals, it is unbelievable.”

Pogrebnyak fuels move rumours

Pavel Pogrebnyak has fuelled rumours he is ready to sign a permanent deal at Fulham after moving into Jose Mourinho's old London pad.

The striker, who arrived on a short-term deal from Stuttgart in January, held a house-warming party at the property that is situated close to Craven Cottage.

"I like my life in London very much," he told Russian website Tden.

"Branislav Ivanocivc, Ramires and Frank Lampard from Chelsea live in my neighbourhood as well as the players of Fulham.

"Jose Mourinho lived in my house before."

Fulham fans are hoping that Martin Jol persuades the Russian striker to sign a long-term deal, despite interest from rival Premier League clubs.

The 28-year-old has been an instant hit since his arrival at Fulham, netting five times in seven appearances, but will be a free agent in the summer when his current contract expires.

Villa Deal a Non-Starter

Is there set to be another twist in the future of Andrew Johnson?

Linked with a move away from Craven Cottage, it was inferred that Aston Villa, under the managerial guidance of Alec McLeish might be interested in taking AJ to Villa Park.

Well that may not be the case now with it also being inferred that any potential deal would be under threat as AJ`s salary demands are rumoured to exceed the maximum £40,000 a week Villa pay!

Although, with the rumour-mill gathering momentum; we expect AJ to be heading out of Craven Cottage at some time or other this summer.
