Arsenal Transfer Scenarios: Picking a Gunners Team to Include Clint Dempsey

To the delight of myself and American Gooners everywhere, Arsenal have been strongly linked with Clint Dempsey recently.

The Texan is having both his best, personal season at Fulham and the best ever for an American player in England: his tally of 16 League goals this year is tied for fourth-best in the Premier League, and he jointly leads his club with five assists.

As anyone who has seen Dempsey play for club or country can attest, he is a truly an exceptional player. He relishes a good fight, enjoys aerial duels and will never pass up the opportunity to score when he has even the slightest chance.

In short, he is the type of versatile and direct winger that any team could use, and whichever side employs him next season will be much better off for doing so.

Dempsey is aware of his talent and his incredible statistics this season. And he knows that he could finally earn himself a move to a team that can fulfill his dream of playing in the Champions League.

After he declared a moratorium on new contract talks, Arsene Wenger likely took another look at a player that would fit extremely well into his team.

If Dempsey were to move to Arsenal this summer, the Frenchman would have loads of tactical problems, but they would almost all be of the sort that managers love to have.

Where the Gunners would put their potential acquisition is an intriguing question not merely because of the players that Arsenal currently (and likely will) have, but because of Dempsey's impressive versatility.

An obvious solution, for example, would be for Arsenal to stick with their current 4-3-3 formation and simply stick Dempsey on the left side while keeping the rest of their lineup intact.

However, Arsenal already have a number of extremely good and promising players who flourish in this position, and Wenger is already having some difficulty fitting Gervinho and wunderkind Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain into the same team.

Of course, it is impossible to have too much depth in any position, but—and I hate to say this—I would not want to stunt Oxlade-Chamberlain's career development by denying him the playing time that he so requires during these crucial formative stages.

Luckily, Dempsey can be used with equal effectiveness in other positions.

In a crowded midfield, the American would provide a very good attacking option in a role very similar to that in which Tomas Rosicky and Aaron Ramsey operate in at the moment. Both his directness and tenacity would be very refreshing in a midfield that sometimes hesitates to take a shot when there is some space available.

But since Jack Wilshere will return to the fold next season and he will be able to take up almost any position in the center of the pitch that Arsene Wenger asks him to, regular opportunities might be limited for Dempsey in that area.

One of the most unexpected areas in which he could provide a real boost, though, would be at striker, which has been by far Arsenal's least reinforced position this season.

The Gunners have toyed with fate during every match because, even though Marouane Chamakh and Ju Young Park are physically on the bench, the manager has demonstrated so little faith in the pair that they cannot even get minutes late in comfortable victories.

Especially if Lukas Podolski completes his rumored move to the Emirates this summer, Arsenal would suddenly be awash with top-class striking talent capable of dismantling any side in England.

Dempsey demonstrated two matches ago for Fulham how brilliant results can be achieved when leading the line by combining his silky technical skill with his constructively pugnacious nature.

Against Bolton, he scored from a free-kick and the type of header that only someone with his confidence, work-rate and positive attitude could have scored. It is that type of energy that Arsenal would greatly benefit from with the American up front and that Robin van Persie would love if the two can play side-by-side.

The beauty of Clint Dempsey really is that he can play just about any attacking position that he is asked to play as well as perform at an "unbelievable" level, as his manager Martin Jol described it.

He has the goalscoring mentality of a poacher, the pace and directness of a winger, and the vision of an attacking midfielder. If Arsenal sign him, he would be able to play just about anywhere at anytime.

And that is perhaps the most effective way to use his many talents: with the incredible tactical flexibility that Arsene Wenger would have with Dempsey on the pitch, he could field a side with Lukas Podolski and Robin van Persie that would be able to seamlessly slide into each other's positions without a hitch, offering the attack a sort of fluidity that it has not had in years.

Plus, the number of different substitutions that would be available to Wenger would be incredible, as any Dempsey substitute could trigger a domino effect and completely alter the structure of the team on the pitch.

So, despite the fact that it might cause some tactical headaches for Arsene Wenger and some players would not be pleased with the amount of rotation in the squad, the ease with which Clint Dempsey could slot into any potential Arsenal team makes him a fantastic buy.

And if that dreaded injury bug hits, which—be honest—it inevitably will, the deck can be reshuffled again in entirely different ways to fit Dempsey into another version of a winning squad.

FULHAM TAKE ON RED HOT WIGAN AT THE COTTAGE

Written by  SoCalJoe

Fulham take on Red Hot Wigan at the Cottage

Once thought to be a relatively easy three points at home has turned into a difficult assignment as the Whites host the hottest team in the Premier League at Craven Cottage. Wigan has transformed their season that once appeared to be doomed to the point where survival looks to be inevitable.

Wigan sat on 22 points the morning of March 24th. A glance at the schedule and it was easy to see why they looked like they wouldn't escape the drop this time around (the Latics left it to the final day last season). However, they won at Liverpool that afternoon and it sparked a terrific run of play. The next four matches following the win at Anfield included a home win versus Stoke, a controversial one goal loss at Chelsea, a clean sheet win over Manchester United, and Monday night's away win at Arsenal. Those 12 points in 5 matches have the Latics clicking on the heels of Aston Villa for 15th place in the Premier League table.

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez has to be given a huge amount of credit for keeping a team that isn't well supported at the gates (the rugby team is a much bigger draw) or funded (Chairman Dave Whelan has publicly stated that the long term health of the club is more important than overspending to stay up). However, the Latics are not devoid of talent by any means. Gary Caldwell anchors the defense and is a tough customer. James McArthur is Wigan's Danny Murphy and drives the engine. Victor Moses tortured Arsenal's Sagna all night and is a handful. Jordi Gomez and Franco DiSanto scored the goals at the Emirates and will be looking to do the same at the Cottage.

Fulham will be coming into the match well rested and hopefully a little bit healthier. The Whites' supporters will have their fingers crossed that Pavel Pogrebnyak will be back on the pitch so Clint Dempsey can be freed of the hold up duties. Fulham comes into the match on a bit of a roll themselves as the team has played quite well after the embarrassing performance against Swansea. A difficult to swallow 1 goal loss at Old Trafford was followed by wins over Norwich and Bolton. The last time out came the draw against Chelsea where the Whites played some great football.

The two teams played at the JJB Stadium on October 29 where Fulham grabbed a rare 0-2 away win. In that match Dempsey scored the first against the run of play late in the first half. In what is the strangest stat of the Fulham season, the terrific Moussa Dembele scored his lone Prem goal of the term to finish the match off. Given how good his overall play has been it's mind boggling that Moose hasn't found the back of the net more often.

A month ago, the prediction would have been a comfortable win at the Cottage, but in order to grab the three points Fulham will need to put in a quality shift. In an entertaining and tense affair the home side will grab a late winner and the spoils 2-1.

Cottage stopper happy with form

Aaron Hughes claims his extra gym session work helped him get back into the Fulham side and keep hold of a first-team jersey.

The Northern Ireland international has endured a mixed campaign as he faced a battle to secure a regular place in Cottagers' boss Martin Jol's first team.

However, after impressing whenever called upon, Hughes has now become a mainstay in the backline having again struck up a solid defensive partnership with Brede Hangeland as Fulham have pulled well clear of any relegation issues thanks to six points from games against Bolton and Norwich.

The duo also did well against Manchester United and Chelsea in recent matches with Hughes claiming the hard work he did when not in the side eventually paid off for him.

He told the club's website: "From a personal perspective, it's been nice to get back in the team.

"Not playing every week has given me a little more time to work on different things in the gym. I've tried to get a little bit stronger and a little bit quicker, and work on my power.

"The biggest thing when you're not playing is you lose that edge that you only really get in games so the only way you can keep that up is to try and maintain that through little bits and pieces that you do around the training ground and in the gym. I think I've done okay since I came back so it looks like it paid off.

"I've tried to keep on top of that, so when I did get called back into the side, I'm ready to go. I feel good, I'm even a little disappointed there's only five games left because, with missing some of the games through the season, I feel there's plenty more still left in me."

Fulham drives on with SEAT

Barclays Premier League club Fulham has announced a one-year extension to its sponsorship deal with SEAT.

The Spanish automotive firm will continue as Fulham’s official car partner for the 2012-13 campaign. The deal was announced at Craven Cottage during Tuesday’s Business Club event attended by 70 sponsors and corporate clients of the London club. The Business Club provides a framework for Fulham supporters in business to come together on a social and informal basis.

SEAT signed an initial two-year deal in November 2010, shortly after Fulham reached the inaugural UEFA Europa League final, an event that is also sponsored by the company. The deal will see SEAT continue to supply Fulham with a number of vehicles for business use.

SEAT will continue to reside in Fulham’s second tier of partners alongside brands such as Jack Wolfskin, Stanley, American Airlines, Canadian Solar and EA Sports.

Hughes on guard for Wigan visit

Aaron Hughes maintains Fulham will not take Wigan lightly when the rejuvenated Latics come to Craven Cottage on Saturday.

Roberto Martinez's side have hauled themselves five points clear of the drop zone following four wins in their last five matches after adding a 2-1 victory at Arsenal on Monday night to memorable triumphs at Anfield and over leaders Manchester United.

Defender Hughes knows Fulham will be in for a tough encounter, but is confident of ending the Latics resurgence.

"They showed what they're capable of in that performance against Manchester United, not just the fact that they won but their attitude and the way they work hard for each other and put everything into the game," Hughes said on the club's official website, www.fulhamfc.com.

"We will expect exactly the same when they turn up at Craven Cottage against us, it will be no different.

"But at the same time, we are at home and our home form has been really good so if we can produce another good performance we give ourselves a very good chance."

Murphy eyes strong finish

DANNY Murphy hopes Fulham can clinch seventh spot and equal the club's best-ever Premier League finish.

The Whites are 10th in the table with five games remaining, but still have to play some of their rivals in the run-in.

And Murphy hopes Martin Jol's men can repeat the feat of 2009 and snatch seventh spot in front of Everton and Liverpool.

“Last year we finished eighth so we will try and better that,” said the Fulham captain.

“We know it's going to be difficult because we've got some tricky away games coming up, like Everton and Liverpool.

“We'll keep going and have shown in recent weeks that we've got good strength in depth.”

Fulham face Wigan at the weekend.

Mousa's Hunger

The Whites are back in action on Saturday after a twelve day hiatus since our draw with local rivals Chelsea, when we welcome Roberto Martinez’ Wigan side to Craven Cottage (KO 3pm).

With Fulham having played 50 competitive matches already this season, most recently two games in three days over Easter, the players would be forgiven for enjoying a period of rest but Mousa Dembele, for one, is desperate to get back onto the Cottage turf.

“Hopefully having this break will be an advantage for us,” Mousa told fulhamfc.com. “But now we’re hungry to get back out on that pitch because we won’t have played for almost two weeks.

"Personally, I’m very hungry to play and I’m confident that with the way we’re playing we can get the win on Saturday.

“It’s very good for Fulham to have got seven points from our last three games. I think we’re in good form so everybody is happy. In our last game we played well against Chelsea but I don’t think it was our best performance of the season; we’ve played better in other matches.

“Don’t get me wrong, I thought we put in a very good performance against Chelsea and we perhaps deserved to get more out of the game. It was a good match to play in.”

Craven Cottage has not been the happiest of hunting grounds for Saturday’s visitors in recent years but relegation-battling Wigan are in fine form at the minute.

Four wins from their last five matches has seen them move clear of the drop-zone and their only defeat in that period was a controversial one to Chelsea.

“They are playing very well at the moment,” admitted Mousa. “I watched their game against Chelsea and they were unlucky to lose that one. I watched their game against Manchester United too which they won and played very well in.

“They’re a motivated team and they will know that Fulham away is very difficult for them but we know they’re in good form so we will respect them as well. I think if we are hungry then we will win this game.”

Fulham defender: Wigan wins over Man Utd, Arsenal & Liverpool show their capabilities

Aaron Hughes is wary of the Whites’ upcoming match with the Latics

Fulham defender Aaron Hughes will not be taking Wigan lightly when the two sides face each other on Saturday.

The Latics have won four of their last five games, including victories against Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal and Stoke with their only defeat coming in controversial circumstances against Chelsea after both Blues goals appeared to be in offside positions.

“They showed what they’re capable of in that performance against Manchester United, not just the fact that they won but their attitude and the way they work hard for each other and put everything into the game,” Hughes told the club’s official website.

“We will expect exactly the same when they turn up at Craven Cottage against us, it will be no different.

“But at the same time, we are at home and our home form has been really good so if we can produce another good performance we give ourselves a very good chance.”
