Form Guide

Come 3pm on Saturday, fans inside Craven Cottage will be treated to an intriguing clash as Fulham take on one of the Barclays Premier League’s form teams.

Fulham have picked up seven points from their last three matches, whilst Wigan Athletic, rejuvenated in recent weeks, have lost only once in seven outings.

That run for the Latics includes victories over Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal and it is form that has seen the club move a breathable distance of five points clear of the relegation zone, although Bolton Wanderers below them do have two games in hand.

Their last game was a famous 2-1 triumph at the Emirates on Monday evening when they raced into an early two goal lead through strikes from Franco di Santo and Jordi Gomez. Arsenal managed just one goal in response through Thomas Vermaelen, thanks largely to some resolute defending from the front by Wigan.

Fulham’s last game, exactly a week before Wigan’s, also had a positive outcome as we drew 1-1 with Champions League semi-finalists Chelsea at Craven Cottage. The Whites had the better of the first half but went in behind when Frank Lampard converted a penalty after referee Mark Clattenburg adjudged that Stephen Kelly had fouled Solomon Kalou in the box. Fulham refused to lie down though and Clint Dempsey popped up late on to head home his 16th league goal of the campaign.

The corresponding fixture against Wigan last term was a routine win for Fulham at the Cottage as a first half brace from Dempsey wrapped things up. The Texan opened his account for the day on the half hour mark with a glancing header from Carlos Salcido’s cross before he doubled his tally just before the interval with a powerful volley.

Dempsey tormented Roberto Martinez again this season as he set Fulham on the way to our first away league win of the 2011/12 campaign back in October. A late Mousa Dembele goal ensured the Whites would be travelling back to London with maximum points.

Last five league games

Fulham: LLWWD

Wigan: WWLWW

He’s No Small Frei (A Look At Fulham’s Teenage Sensation)
by LORK on APRIL 18, 2012

Fulham are fortunate enough at the moment to be blessed with alot of talent in our pool of Under 21 players. Trotta, Briggs, Kacaniklic, among others, have all had their impact in the first team and the reserves. However, without doubt no player has made an impression like Swiss/Turk/Moroccan/Austrian (take you’re pick, he’s eligible for all four countries) youngster Kerim Frei. The 18 year old has almost reached two dozen appearances this season – over half of them have come in the league – and they have all come from the merit of his own ability.

Picked up fairly under the radar in early 2010 from Swiss club Grasshopper Zurich, Frei enjoyed regular appearances in the U18 and Reserve leagues, impressive with his quick feet, explosive burst of pace and control of the ball at speed. His breakthrough moment came soon after Jol’s arrival. With the promise of a new philosophy based on developing young players Frei’s talent couldn’t be ignored by the Dutchman and in only his second game in charge Jol gave Frei his first team debut, aged just 17, coming off the bench in a short cameo away at RSI Runavik in the first round of the Europa League.

The early season European games gave Jol the opportunity to test his young players at a competitive level, an opportunity Frei in particular was afforded and he made several more appearances in European competition, including an eyecatching display away at the Crusaders. There was now a buzz amongst the fans about Frei; we were aware that, perhaps for the first time since Sean Davis, we had a genuine Academy talent on our hands. Still, there were some fair reservations, the calibre of opponent we had seen him against was fairly poor and we hadn’t seen him for an extended period in a game.

That all changed on Frei’s first domestic Fulham start. Having drawn Chelsea away in our first round of the League Cup Jol opted to go with the untried and untested, playing a line up which included Ruiz, Sa, Gecov and Grygera. It was Frei however who stole the show with a blistering display of skill and pace which belied his age. It was a game we no doubt should have won with a penalty won by Frei, who was pulled down in the penalty area through on goal having done Alex one time too many (he walked for the foul too), but it was unfortunate that Kasami, another impressive performer on the night, missed a penalty and defied team instructions in the process.

Nevertheless, Frei entered a man of the match peformance and announced his arrival as a legitimate member of the Fulham first team squad, not as a token gesture of his age but because of the talent he possessed. He became a familiar face to Fulham fans and by New Years Day he had managed to score his first Fulham goal and make his first league start (again away at Chelsea). His contributions against Odense at home was particuarly noteworthy, first setting up Dempsey via Zamora with a fiendish burst and pass down the left hand side, before popping up in the middle and making a superb run off the ball to give himself a chance from a Dembele pass which he finished with aplomb. However as well as displaying his talent he displayed his naivety in equal measure; with just 20 seconds to go of the match at 2-1 he tried a Marseille Roullette in the Odense box which backfired spectacuarly when he lost the ball. The rest, as they say, is history. The moment was significant but was just a blip on Frei’s CV which was becoming ever more impressive, following impressive performances at Swansea, Chelsea and Norwich.

The sky seemed the limit for the young winger but fans began to get away with themselves (don’t worry, the irony is intentional), calling for Frei to be a permament fixture in the first team when he was still evidently not ready. His performance at Blackburn seemed to be the tonic for this; after being introduced for Dembele after thirty minutes the sub was subbed. It was to be expected, and perhaps it was for the best that opinions of Frei were tempered and pressure on him was relieved, for a while at least. As for the teenager, there was no doubt his flying form had diminished somewhat but in the last couple of weeks he turned that totally around with two starts against two of the biggest teams in the league. He started away at United, a game in which he played 67 minutes and did himself no harm at all, before following it up with his third start of the season against Chelsea. And what a display he put on in that derby. Ivanovic is no mug but Frei forced him into a good impression of one with a performance which demonstrated his skill, his acceleration, his close control and his intelligent running. He picked up his second bottle of Man of the Match champagne, despite being barely old enough to drink it.

And that is where the story of Frei leaves us. Apologies for the length of that; I only meant to do a summation but his rise to prominence is quite remarkable. There is a genuine belief among fans that we have a special, unique talent at the club, and we must be grateful that we have Frei contracted until 2015 considering Smalling was bought for 12 million, a teenager with the same ‘X’ factor but even weaker credentials! It is a view that is without doubt matched by Jol, and it’s quite striking how much trust the manager has in him. Frei hasn’t started many league games but when he has they’ve tended to be big games, United away and both Chelsea matches in particular and the hug between player and manager following his first goal against Odense was genuinely quite heartwarming. Moreover, Jol has used him in and Frei has demonstrated an impressive capability to create momentum for the team by coming off the bench, the red card of Djourou (Wenger post match claimed it was unfair to send Frei on to match up to Djourou, already on a yellow card) and the penalty award at Swansea in particular.

Frei laughed off comparisons with Messi earlier this season, but there is some merit to them in terms of playstyle. Frei has an exceptional burst of acceleration (although at full speed I don’t know how quick he is) but what’s also impressive is his ability to retain control of the ball as he runs. His close control too is very impressive, and has the flair and imagination to match his quick feet.

His defensive work has to be improved upon and probably needs a bit of focus, because he can let his full back free quite alot and Riise does not enjoy two-on-one situations. I don’t think he’s lazy necessarily, it’s just totally against his game, but to realise his talent he needs to be committed in every aspect of his game. The nice thing about Frei is that he seems down to earth and determined enough to take criticism and use constructive comment to improve himself as a player. At the moment he is also very right footed and almost every time you can predict what he will do; he will pick the ball up on the touch line and try and beat his man inside. It is no bad skill and Riise flourishes with the space that creates, but he needs more versatility when running with the ball especially when it is the better option.

Messi, like Frei, has played most of his career on the ‘opposite wing’ i.e. on the wing opposite to his stronger foot (on the right and left respectively). And this brings me on to something which I find genuinely quite infuriating. People observe his pace and ability to beat a man and that, combined with the emergence of Kacaniklic as a traditional wide man who also occupies that left hand side, has persuaded people to clamour to see Frei as a right winger. But that does Frei a total disservice because, like Messi, there is more to his game than beating his man. Frei possesses great dribbling ability, no doubt about that, but what he also has is an impressive pass (not in terms of range though) and vision about him. The slide rule ball for Riise’s offside attempt at goal is an example of it, but the example that really sticks out was when I saw him in a reserve game earlier this season (not quite sure which one, but I wrote a report on it), and he picked the ball up fairly deep, but he kept driving at goal. There were runners with but he kept running with the ball, before finally releasing it at the perfect time with the perfect weight, and I can’t quite remember what happened next but that’s fairly irrelevant because that moment demonstrated a maturity and decision making, a sophistication even, which in tandem with his technical ability really made me think ‘wow, this guy is good’. His movement is dynamic too, even going as far as offering a threat in behind defences in the middle of the pitch. This all comes about because on the left (or through the middle, I’ve seen him play there too for the reserves and the first team) he can use his stronger right foot, which gives him the confidence and technique to pull these other facets of his game off. Besides, he isn’t a particuarly great striker of the ball with his right foot anyway so I’m not sure how effective his crosses would be, although as I say he does need to develop his left foot and begin to turn both ways.

Frei has now set the standard and opened the door for this talented generation of Fulham youngsters to become Premier League players. His impressive rise to the first team is matched by the ability he has, and while he will hit the obstacles that all young players invariably do whether it’s loss of form, injury or some other type of malaise Frei appears to have a grounded mentality which will enable him to come through any downfalls stronger than when he entered them, which is encouraging enough to fairly anticipate a realisation of his potential. If he continues this rate of progress who knows, maybe he’ll follow a similar path to fellow winger Alexis Sanchez and line up alongside Messi – but I’m sure we’ll be hoping that he lines up opposite Messi one day instead. For now however, there is no better place Frei can be than at Fulham Football Club, and should Dembele or Dempsey decide to move on in the summer our wounds might not be so deep safe in the knowledge we have another potential star in the making.

Roma ready to move for Fulham star

Roma are ready to launch a bid for Fulham top scorer Clint Dempsey, according to reports in Italy.

The American, who is out of contract in June 2013, has become Fulham's most influential player over the last few years and has hit 16 goals this term, making him the Premier League's highest-scoring midfielder.

Craven Cottage boss Martin Jol is desperate for the Texan to stay in west London but, at 29, Dempsey knows that signing a new contract is almost certain to end his chances of playing for one of Europe's major clubs.

Arsenal have been linked with a summer move for him, but now Roma are ready to test Fulham's resolve with a xlose season bid.

Italian TV station Sky Calcio has reported that the Serie A giants would be willing to pay as much as £7m for the midfielder who could walk away from the club for nothing in just 14 months.

Murphy sets sights on seventh
Skipper targeting strong finish with Cottagers

Danny Murphy: Hoping Fulham can better last year's eighth-placed finish

Fulham captain Danny Murphy is hoping the Cottagers can match their best-ever Premier League finish by securing seventh place this season.

Martin Jol's men sit 10th in the standings with five games left to play as they prepare to host relegation-threatened Wigan on Saturday.

The Cottagers still have to face some of the teams around them in the run-in, including Everton and Liverpool away.

But midfielder Murphy is backing them to edge out the Merseyside rivals and emulate the seventh-placed finish they clinched in 2009.

"Last year we finished eighth so we will try and better that," the skipper told the Fulham Chronicle.

"We know it's going to be difficult because we've got some tricky away games coming up, like Everton and Liverpool.

"We'll keep going and have shown in recent weeks that we've got good strength in depth."

Something to Mull Over

With the season coming to a close and with the relegation places looking to be filled, we`ve a question for you!

Naturally, when top-flight sides suffer the humiliation of relegation, several of their playing staff look to jump ship.

Now this is where you come in.

We`d like you to suggest, out of those teams looking as if they`re destined for the drop, are there any players that you feel Martin Jol should be looking to bring to Fulham to do a job at a reasonable price?

Normal Service Will Be Resumed!

It`s been a strange few days!

Whilst the cogs continue to turn for other clubs, all matters relating to Craven Cottage seem to have hibernated.

Whilst the other Premier League clubs go abut their business we`ve been left sitting high and pretty without a fixture.

Now considering we started before everybody else with our Europa League campaign, I`d imagine the players have found the quiet spell quite restful.

But for us amateur hacks, it`s been a real struggle to keep the site ticking over. Thank goodness the action resumes this weekend and we can get the site back to normal!

Dembele ready to wound Wigan

Mousa Dembele has warned giant-killers Wigan they will meet a hungry Fulham side determined to maintain their own impressive form on Saturday.

Wigan have defied their critics of late by registering back-to-back wins over Manchester United and Arsenal to drag themselves out of the bottom three.

Roberto Martinez knows his team, who are now five points above the Premier League drop zone, can take another huge step to safety with a win at Fulham this weekend, but Dembele has warned Latics that the in-form Londoners are raring to go after a 12-day break.

The Fulham forward said: "Hopefully having this break will be an advantage for us. Personally, I'm very hungry to play and I'm confident that with the way we're playing we can get the win on Saturday.

"We have got seven points from our last three games so we're in good form and everybody is happy.

"Wigan are playing very well at the moment. They're a motivated team but they will know that Fulham away is very difficult for them."

Jol reveals Dempsey disposal plan

Martin Jol says Fulham will sell Clint Dempsey quickly if he does not sign a new contract and also claims that Moussa Dembele is worth £15m.

The Dutch boss spoke candidly at a question and answer session at a Fulham Business Club event last night.

Jol is aware that Dempsey is interesting several top clubs as he prepares to enter the final 12 months of his Craven Cottage contract, but the Fulham boss is still hoping to convince his top-scorer to stay at the club.

Fulham have put a two-year extension on the table but the 29-year-old American admitted in January that he wants to play Champions League football.

However, Jol will not let the matter drift when the season comes to an end next month and stated that he will be looking to offload Dempsey quickly once the transfer market re-opens if the forward has not put pen to paper by then.

Dembele, who Jol knew from his time in Dutch football as Ajax coach before he took over last summer, has also been linked with a move away after another highly-promising season.

The Fulham boss compared the Belgian to Spurs' Rafael van der Vaart earlier this season and told fans that he rates Dembele as worth £15m in the current transfer market climate.

Murphy aiming for seventh-place finish for Fulham
The Cottagers' captain believes he and his team-mates can end the season strongly and equal their best-ever finish in the Premier League with four points to gain on Everton

Fulham captain Danny Murphy has urged his team-mates to end the season on a high note by beating the other teams around them to seventh place.

Martin Jol's men are on an impressive run of form, having won two of their last three games, but currently lie in 10th with five games remaining in the season.

Murphy is backing the Cottagers to finish seventh and emulate the success of 2009, where they recorded their highest-ever Premier League finish.

The 35-year-old told The Fulham Chronicle: "Last year we finished eighth so we will try and better that."
Fulham still have to play the teams around them, with games against Merseysiders Liverpool and Everton both coming up.

Both teams are in a stronger position to finish in Murphy’s desired spot, being three and four points ahead of the west London side respectively having played the same number of games.

"We know it's going to be difficult because we've got some tricky away games coming up," Murphy added.

"We'll keep going and have shown in recent weeks that we've got good strength in depth."

Fulham host Wigan on Saturday, with their opponents coming off the back of surprisingly victories over Manchester United and Arsenal in their last two outings.

Dembele confident of a Fulham victory over Wigan
The Cottagers' attacker is full of praise for the Latics but insists that him and his team-mates will make it tough for them to continue their recent fine run of results

Fulham forward Moussa Dembele is confident of three points against Wigan on Saturday, despite the Latics registering back-to-back victories over Manchester United and Arsenal.

Roberto Martinez's men are enjoying a rich vein of form that has seen them rise five points clear of the drop zone.

But Dembele believes they will find it tough against Fulham, who themselves have been impressive of late.

The forward told the club’s official website: "Wigan are playing very well at the moment. They're a motivated team but they will know that Fulham away is very difficult for them.

"We have got seven points from our last three games so we're in good form and everybody is happy."

And after a 12-day rest, the Belgian attacker insists his side will be raring to go.

"Hopefully having this break will be an advantage for us. Personally, I'm very hungry to play and I'm confident that with the way we're playing we can get the win on Saturday.

RUMOUR: Fulham lining up move for Jay Emmanuel-Thomas

Jay Emmanuel Thomas in action for Ipswich

FULHAM could be about to hand Jay Emmanuel-Thomas a chance to return to the Premier League.

One national newspaper has claimed Fulham boss Martin Jol is considering a move for Ipswich Town’s mercurial talent who has enjoyed a largely fantastic second half of the season.

While Paul Jewell would be reluctant to lose someone could star in the Championship next season, every Ipswich player probably has his price.

Emmanuel-Thomas came off the bench on Tuesday night to score his seventh of the season – and go tantalisingly close to another after cannoning a free-kick against the crossbar.

Speaking of the man he signed from Arsenal last summer, Jewell said: ““We have got to work on his fitness in the summer because he’s dropping off at the end of the games.

“But it’s his first full season of football and he’ll be a better player for it next year. He’s going to be a player, there is a lot more to come from him.”

Fulham Linked With JET

Fulham are amongst a number of Premier League clubs to have been alerted to the talents of Blues midfielder Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, according to a tabloid report.

The 21-year-old has begun to show his potential in the second half of the season and scored his seventh goal of the campaign in the 1-1 draw with Birmingham on Tuesday.

According to the report, Town are said to be looking for a fee of double the initial £1.5 million they are said to have paid the Gunners last summer, although manager Paul Jewell recently quoted a lower figure of £600,000.

However, even if there is any truth in the report, with Emmanuel-Thomas an increasingly key player in Jewell’s team, the Blues are likely to do everything they can to hold on to the Londoner with Marcus Evans's cash ensuring that they can rebuff offers in a manner they wouldn't have been able to a few years ago.

Meanwhile, striker Michael Chopra has been banned from driving for six months after reaching 12 points on his licence having admitted driving through a red light in September last year.

Chopra, who attended court with chief executive Simon Clegg, was also £400, ordered to pay £85 in court costs and a further £15 to victims of crime. The 28-year-old was banned from driving for 56 days for speeding earlier in the season.

Dalla Valle and Ricketts depart

STRIKER Lauri Dalla Valle and winger Rohan Ricketts have left Exeter City.

Dalla Valle has returned to parent club Fulham following a month on loan at St James's Park, during which he made four starts and one substitute appearance without finding the net.

Ricketts also joined the Grecians last month following a successful trial period but only made one substitute appearance, during the 2-0 defeat to Tranmere Rovers, before he was released over the weekend.

City chief executive Julian Tagg said: "With players returning to full fitness his chances were likely to be limited.

"The club and Rohan have parted ways to allow him to take up opportunities elsewhere. Rohan has been a breath of fresh air around the club and he has been a real pleasure to work with.

"His departure has been very amicable and the club wish him all the best in the future."

Grecians boss Paul Tisdale said of Dalla Valle: "It is the end of his loan spell and he's going back. We had a month from him and Saturday was his last game for us."

Tickets have gone on sale for City's final home game of the season against Sheffield United on Saturday, May 5, which is an all-ticket affair.

Two blocks in the Flybe Stand plus the usual away allocation will be given to the Blades supporters, who are expected to travel to St James's Park in large numbers as their side close in on promotion.

That means some Grecians fans will not be able to claim their regular seat, but the club says it is in contact with those affected in order to keep disruption to a minimum.

Tickets are subject to the club's premium pricing charge, so adults will pay £26 for a seat in the Flybe Stand, £23 for a spot in the Old Grandstand or £19 to stand on the Big Bank. For more prices and to buy tickets go to ticketzone.co.uk, call 08448 444410 or visit St James's Park main reception which is open every weekday between 8.30am and 5.30pm.

Roma set to take Clint Dempsey from under Arsenal's nose

Gunners also face competition for the hand of Luis Muriel, ‘the Colombian Cristiana Ronaldo'

THERE are more reasons for Arsenal fans to look anxious ahead of Saturday's do-or-die clash with Chelsea. Not only must the Gunners beat the Blues, conquerors of Barcelona on Wednesday night, to maintain their grip on third spot, but the north London club are on the brink of being beaten to the hand of Fulham hotshot Clint Dempsey.

According to The Sun, the American goalscoring midfielder is a target for the Italian club Roma who will "test Fulham's resolve with a bid". The paper says that bid will be £7m, a sum Fulham are likely to accept as the 29-year-old Dempsey is out of contract at the end of 2013. Arsenal are apparently still keen on Dempsey but manager Arsene Wenger has yet to turn the interest into intent.

Four clubs are on the tail of Luis Muriel, the 21-year-old Colombian striker with a scoring touch, including Arsenal and Manchester United. According to Talksport, the Premier League pair have been keeping tabs on Muriel after the youngster began impressing for Italian Serie B side Lecce where he is on loan from Udinese.

Dubbed "the Colombian Cristiano Ronaldo", Muriel comes with an £8m price tag and is expected to make his international debut this year. However Talksport warns Arsenal and United that they aren't the only ones pursuing Muriel. CSKA Moscow are apparently preparing to make a summer offer while Juventus have also sent scouts to run the rule over him.

It's not often that Blackburn Rovers find themselves the centre of attention in the transfer market but that appears to be the case right now thanks to midfielder Steven N'Zonzi.

The Metro says that Arsenal, Chelsea and rich Russians Anzhi Makhachkala are all vying to sign the 23-year-old Frenchman who arrived at Ewood Park in 2009. With Rovers staring relegation in the face, N'Zonzi is apparently weighing up his options.

The Metro claims Anzhi are prepared to offer the playmaker a "whopping pay packet" if he joins former Rovers team-mate Chris Samba, just one of several big names to make the move east in the past 12 months as the Russians have forked out nearly £300m in an attempt to become a powerhouse in European football.

Despite the interest from Anzhi, however, N'Zonzi hasn't ruled out the possibility of staying in England and joining either Arsenal or Chelsea. Both clubs have made overtures to the France Under-21 international and the final decision will be made by N'Zonzi in June.

On the other side of the Channel, Joe Cole has declared his wish to remain with Lille as his year-long loan deal draws to a close. The former England midfielder joined the French champions in August from Liverpool and things have worked out better than expected for the 30-year-old. In an interview with French sports daily L'Equipe, Cole said: "I would like to stay here, but it's still too early to say what will happen. Let's see how we finish the season."

He then admitted that his future lay in hands other than his own. "It's not all up to me where I will end up. The board makes the final decision. I have not spoken to anyone from Liverpool yet."

Finally, Portuguese rag Record says that Manchester United may use midfielder Anderson as bait in their bid to sign Nicolas Gaitan from Benfica.

The Red Devils have been after the Argentine winger for months and, according to Record, Benfica have told United that they may be prepared to trade if they throw Anderson into the mix. That looks likely as the Brazilian playmaker has never really sparked in the five years he's spent at Old Trafford. ·
