What's the point of staying sober?

Various rumours on Twitter at the moment about this but what Dave Kidd says below has a ring of logic about it -

http://www.lifesapitch.co.uk/laptv/hazard-to-man-city-spurs-want-foster-dembele-off/

Now Fulham’s Dembélé might not have enjoyed as many column inches as fellow Belgian, Hazard, but it would seem the race to sign him is no less fervent. Spurs appear to be at the front of the queue, says The People’s Dave Kidd. “I’ve written myself that Man Utd and Arsenal are seriously interested, so I’m going to have to give it at least nine and half out of 10,” Dave jokes. “Spurs have already bid in the past, [Harry] Redknapp’s a big admirer. He’s a Champions League player, he’s a fantastically gifted individual. [Martin] Jol has done a very good job on him moving him back into central midfield, because he’s not an out-and-out goalscorer. The guy is top class. Fulham will let him go, but it’ll be for something like £15million.”

One rumour is that the deal may involve Defoe coming the other way.

Can't see Defoe coming, not with his background with Jol. I'd prefer Kranjcar or Naughton.

Rumours since the end of the season are also that Defoe has possibly handed in a transfer request. Much has been made of his poor relationship with Jol during his Spurs days, but he is a clinical finisher and may be attracted to guaranteed first team football. If we got a decent amount of cash + Defoe I'd be satisfied.

I hate the idea of Dembele dwindling on a bench somewhere. He deserves top-six football but also needs a starting place. He'd hardly get a game with the likes of Spurs, City or even United (although Fergie is an expert at rotating his squad.) There are quite a few decent players hidden away in Spurs' squad list who rarely step onto the pitch. I really rate Kranjcar, for instance.

I'd rather not lose him but wouldn't object to £15-20+ million and even Defoe added on. *Don't shoot me* I could actually see him doing quite well in a Chelsea side or even with Arsenal.

Ooh, this is my 4-4-2nd post!

Do a straight swap for Modric and Van Der Vaart.

I can deifinitely agree on the Arsenal side, I actually think he is a better fit than Dempsey will be into an Arsenal team. His work rate is phenomenal as is his technique. I think him and Song would work well.

I wouldn't want to loose Moussa for less than £12m.

I don't think he will dwindle on a bench: he'll be bought as a starting XI player because he's very good indeed. Dunno about deserving anything; the league would be much more interesting if European places were restricted to league champions, runners up, cup winners as in days of old old git (I realise that would have deprived us of our greatest season). Clubs like us would have a better chance of keeping Dembélé or whoever. And the league would be a little more unpredictable.

I've loved watching him but don't feel any especial connection with him if that makes sense (Dempsey's been such a part of the club in his time with us, so that would feel different). If he's going I hope there's a quick, intense, bidding war and we get rid quickly. I'd rather not Defoe, but that's more to do with associating him with a group of England players than his usefulness to us as a goalscorer. Which he certainly is.

To be fair, Spurs are pretty likely to lose Modric this summer, and its hard to see a better replacement for him than Dembele...
