What's the point of staying sober?

Home Friendly In Doubt For Reds

By Rob Miles (BarnsleyBoy)

Updated Sunday, 17th June 2012

Fulham reject Oakwell match.

Barnsley could be set to enter the new season without having played a home pre-season friendly after Premier League side Fulham became the latest side to reject a match at Oakwell.

Back before the 2011-2012 season had even ended, The Reds had local rivals Sheffield Wednesday pencilled in to make the short journey up the A61 as they have for the previous two seasons, but the Owls promotion back to the Championship scuppered those plans.

Barnsley then approached Wednesday’s city neighbours Sheffield United, who remained in League One after losing the play-off final to Huddersfield but Danny Wilson’s side rejected the idea. And now West London outfit Fulham have declined the invitation, leaving The Reds with precious little time to organise a game.

Director Don Rowing told the Barnsley Chronicle:

“The manager is trying to find a club but it’s getting late now. It’s a shame about Fulham – they said they didn’t want to play outside the capital.

“It seems anything north off Wycombe is a bit too far for them and they didn’t fancy the trek up to Yorkshire."

Cost cutting or more likely why waste a day or two of pre season travelling up the M1.

I take it, as usual we will be doing a tour involving a training camp somewhere in Europe then a home friendly?

Why would we want to schelep up to Barnsley for a kicking match in our schedule?

Well I saw us play a friendly v. Birmingham at St Andrews a few years ago (Pantsil's first game for us - not a very good one either) so we have been known to venture in to the wilds.
