Martin Jol feels the transfer window should close before the season begins to stop the kind of "nonsense" Fulham have faced over Clint Dempsey.
Fulham fined Dempsey this week after he refused to play for the club in Saturday's game at Norwich, which the Cottagers won 5-0.
The American, who scored 23 goals last season, has his heart set on a move to Liverpool, but the Anfield club have yet to bid for the player despite making an enquiry about him last month.
This summer has seen a number of players in conflict with their clubs over transfers.
Robin van Persie barely played for Arsenal this summer before securing a move to Manchester United while Luka Modric has not played for Tottenham as he has been pining for a transfer to Real Madrid.
This kind of scenario dismays Jol, who believes all clubs should be forced to do their transfer dealings before the start of the season, rather than by the end of August.
"We should stop the window when the first game is played then all this nonsense would stop," the Fulham manager said.
"If you look at the window now with two weeks to go, it's awful because there are a lot of clubs waiting around until they get the money in (from sales) and if they have got the money then they will come in and of course then you have players with clauses as well, so I think we should do something about it.
"It's a bit frustrating. I had the same thing happen to me in Germany (with Hamburg).
"Vincent Kompany left and then (Rafael) van der Vaart left in the same week."
If anything, yesterday's result proved that Fulham can cope easily without Dempsey.
Mladen Petric scored two goals on debut and Damien Duff, Steve Sidwell and Alex Kacaniklic also found the net as Fulham ruined Chris Hughton's bow as Norwich boss.

What's the FA's reasoning behind having it when it is? Jol makes a lot of sense and I agree with his points, but surely there's a reason it is as it is.

I don't see what different it makes. So the window closes when the first game starts, two players are sold, then what?
There will still be a deadline day and there will still be a frenzy of buying in the days running up to it as all the clubs know that is the deadline.

Then there are no games between clubs and players while a window is open during the first few weeks of a season. If the window closes before a season begins then manager knows who his players are until the next window opens and a player knows who his club is until the next window opens and the silliness ceases unless you're an idiot. It wouldn't help with the January window of course.

Well, on the one hand I agree with Mr. Jol. On the other hand, since not all of the leagues begin play on the same weekend, it's kind of a stupid suggestion, isn't it?

Stupid or impractical? I don't believe it is stupid to suggest that the window should close before the season begins but it would be impractical to implement if the other major leagues who use an August 31 deadline date did not adopt the change as well.

Barry, my point is that if the window shuts down before ANYBODY's league starts, it'll mean that there'll be three weeks left before the Prem starts and nobody can improve their roster. Jol's suggestion has merit ONLY if every season starts on the same day.
