Hamburg v Fulham betting tips

Zamora scored home and away against Wolfsburg

Dave Higgins - 20 Apr 2010

Cottagers 9/2 to win again in Germany

Roy Hodgson has previously spoken about the metaphorical journey that his Fulham team have undertaken to reach the semi-finals of the Europa League. However, with flights cancelled across the board, the Cottagers will embark on a 500-mile road trip to Hamburg which brings a whole new meaning to a European adventure!

It's no laughing matter for the manager, who wanted UEFA to rearrange this first leg contest and prevent a 500-mile coach trip across Europe. Indeed, who knows what impact it will have on Thursday night's result and there will be many backing Hamburg (4/6 Stan James) to win this first leg on the basis that Fulham's preparation has been disrupted.

The German side lost at the semi-final stage of this competition and will be looking to one better in 2010, especially as the final takes place at their own Nordbank Arena. Blue Square go 4/7 that Bruno Labbadia's qualify for the final.

However, we should know better than to write off Fulham in this competition by now. Basel, Shakhtar Donetsk, Juventus and Wolfsburg have all been eliminated by the west London outfit and perhaps it's written in the stars (or volcanic ash cloud) that the Cottagers will win the Europa League (5/1 Coral). After all, they won in Germany in the quarter finals and Hamburg occupy a similar Bundesliga position to the Wolves. Sporting Bet offer 9/2 that the visitors win this first leg contest.

Bobby Zamora has been nothing short of a revelation this season and it's my belief that he'll be unfortunate not to get an England call-up this summer. The striker scored the only goal of the game at the Volkswagen Arena and is 9/1 (William Hill) to break the deadlock in Thursday match. The former West Ham forward really seems to relish these big European nights and he's also available at 10/3 (William Hill) to score at any stage of the game.

Hamburger have a couple of hotshots in their squad and the most dangerous striker is probably Ruud Van Nistelrooy. The Dutchman is doing his best to secure a place in the Holland World Cup squad and he's 4/1 (Blue Square) to break the deadlock. He will be partnered by Marcus Berg (6/1 Stan James), a talented Swede who scored the winning goal at Celtic during the group stages.

However, Fulham managed to keep a clean sheet in Wolfsburg and should at least ensure that the outcome is Under 2.5 Goals at the Nordbank. Bet365 offer 19/20 that this happens and the Cottagers have managed goalless draws in their past two Premier League matches against Liverpool and Wolves. No Goalscorer is on offer at 12/1 with Sky Bet.
