Brooking: Hodgson success now acknowledged

Football Association director of football development Sir Trevor Brooking believes Roy Hodgson's success with Fulham has catapulted him into the limelight.

He further believes that Hodgson will be in contention for some top club and international managerial jobs.

Hodgson guided the unfancied Cottagers to victories over Shakhtar Donetsk, Juventus, Wolfsburg and Hamburg on the way to last night's final, where they were beaten in heartbreaking fashion 2-1 in extra-time by Atletico Madrid.

The 62-year-old former Inter Milan, Blackburn and Finland boss was this week named League Managers' Association's manager of the year and his achievements have not gone unnoticed at the FA, who have Fabio Capello under contract until 2012.

"Roy has been successful abroad and he is quite often on UEFA's technical study groups at tournaments because they think he is very knowledgeable," Brooking told Press Association Sport.

"He didn't get that recognition at home, and it didn't work out at Blackburn, but he's come back this time and done a fantastic job.

"Roy is one of those, after what he has achieved in the last couple of years, will have forced his way into possibilities of other club or international jobs.

"Hopefully we've got Fabio for another couple of years, whatever happens this summer, but Roy is very experienced and he's just got to continue the job he's doing at the moment."
