Liverpool will make a formal approach for Roy Hodgson to become their new manager within the next 48 hours.

The Fulham boss is the clear front-runner from a short list drawn up by Kop legend Kenny Dalglish and MD Christian Purslow, to be presented to the Anfield board this week.

The club's directors are certain to give the green light to make Hodgson their official target within the next two days, and approach his London club with an offer of compensation to make him the next Liverpool manager.

Former Inter Milan boss Hodgson has a one-year rolling contract with the Craven Cottage outfit, negotiated at the start of the just completed season. Crucially, it contains a clause which allows him to leave to join a top club for a compensation figure of around £2.5million.

The experienced coach has maintained a diplomatic silence over Liverpool interest in recent days, but he has made clear his desire to have one last opportunity with one of the Premier League's leading clubs.

Dalglish and Purslow have pinpointed six key qualities they require in their choice to succeed Rafa Benitez, and Hodgson is the candidate who ticks all the boxes.

Old news. More recent news is that Dalglish wants the job, and if those yank boardroom men want to do something right and please their fans then they will sign their cult hero (most Liverpool fans don't believe that Hodgson is good enough for their club). We have, today, been linked with a Standard Liege striker for £8m, and apparently it's set to be completed (the bloke has been quoted on SSN saying he's interested in coming). If Roy signs him then I'm 99% sure he'll stay; signing Senderos and then possibly Mbokani are not signs that Roy will be leaving.

Logically that must be so. MAF would surely not agree to new signings if there was any doubt about Roy staying.

I was hoping all this would be done either way by the World Cup but Liverpool and really showing how poor they are at sorting stuff out. Lets drag this on and on. Please let this be finalised soon. However Al will have plans either way so in Big AL and his advisors I trust.
The above IS NOT A LEGAL DOCUMENT. It is an opinion.

We may yet hear the horse talk.

Roy Hodgson 'still number one target' for Liverpool manager position

Liverpool are still hoping to convince Roy Hodgson to leave Fulham and become their new manager despite the emergence of Kenny Dalglish as a possible contender for the Anfield hot seat, reports suggest.

Reports today suggest that the Liverpool board are determined to pursue Hodgson, who oversaw Fulham's unlikely run to the Europa Leage final this year.

This is despite the news that Dalglish had revealed his ambitions to take the role once more.

The current academy ambassador at Liverpool was manager between 1985 and 1991 and is a firm favourite among the club's fans.

But the fact that Liverpool are currently in a state of flux, with £237m of debt hanging over the club's heads and owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett having put the for-sale signs up, is thought to be Hodgson's main concern.

The former Blackburn and Switzerland manager has a £2.5m buy-out clause in his current one-year Fulham contract, but the west London club are said to be doing their best to tie him down further.

The Sun reports that owner Mohamed Al Fayed is prepared to double Hodgson's £1m-a-year deal, while Fulham are also hoping that the 62-year-old will stay in the hope that he will become the next England manager.

"Leaving Fulham to take over at England would be seen as the pinnacle of Roy's career," an insider told the paper.

"And everyone thinks that's what he would love to do. He could miss out on that if he gets tempted by Liverpool and then the England job comes up not long after."
