Bookies slash price on Jol for Fulham job

Paddy Power

Tagged under: Premier League

Martin Jol has been cut to as little as 4/1 to become the next Fulham manager after bookmakers reported a huge surge of bets this morning.

The former Tottenham manager is now at a best price of 8/1 with Paddy Power to take over from Roy Hodgson in the Craven Cottage dugout, having fallen from a high of 50/1 earlier this week.

Jol, who since leaving Spurs has enhanced reputation with stints at German Bundesliga side Hamburg and Dutch giants Ajax, remains the fourth favourite for the job however, with former England boss Sven Goran Eriksson the 7/4 front runner. Former Bayern Munich manager Ottmar Hitzfeld is the 7/2 second favourite whilst current Finland and former England U-19 coach Stuart Baxter is at 6/1.

As well as Jol, Paddy Power also prices Croatian coach Slaven Bilic at 8/1 (drifted from 11/2) whilst American coach Bob Bradley and former Charlton and West Ham boss Alan Curbishley are both priced at 12/1. Current Cardiff manager is next in line according to the bookmakers, available at a best price of 16/1.

The highly-rated Doncaster Rovers coach, Sean O'Driscoll, has drifted out to 50/1 with the Irish bookie after being considered at early 8/1 front runner.

Could Martin Jol be in charge at Craven Cottage next season?(credit: mad1how)

There has been huge support for Martin Jol to become the next Fulham manager

Jol has been slashed from 33/1 to just 6/1 with William Hill after a massive gamble.

William Hill are offering a £25 free bet to readers who open an account using bonus code F25.

Hill's spokesman Graham Sharpe said: "Jol attracted a few bets of up to £50 a time this morning when we had him at 33/1; we shortened him to 20/1, and were accommodated again with bets of up to £100, so went 10/1 at which price we were still fielding plenty of cash, before cutting him again."

Sven-Goran Eriksson remains favourite to succeed Roy Hodgson but has drifted out to 11/8, with Ottmar Hitzfeld 6/4, USA coach Bob Bradley 5/1 and Alan Curbishley 6/1 along with Jol.

Jol moves to the top of wanted list

By Harry Harris, Football Correspondent

July 14, 2010

Official Fulham sources have revealed that Switzerland coach Ottmar Hitzfeld and USA manager Bob Bradley are no longer on the club's shortlist to replace Roy Hodgson, and it now appears that Martin Jol is a leading candidate for the job.

Soccernet understands that Mohammed Al Fayed is on the verge of making up his mind in a long drawn-out process of finding the right candidate. Fulham are on schedule to name their new manager by Monday at the latest, and possibly as early as Friday.

A source close to one of the leading candidates told Soccernet: "The rumour is that Martin Jol is now very much in the frame. A decision is expected by Friday and the rumour is that Mohammed Al Fayed has yet to make up his mind.

"The other rumour is that the budget for the manager is £1 million-a-year, which has put the cat amongst the pigeons. If that is the case, than it might be something to tempt a manager like Martin Jol back into English football."

Sven-Goran Eriksson, Mark Hughes and Carlos Queiroz are also names which continue to be linked with the vacant position. Queiroz is a surprise on the list, but sources inside Craven Cottage have suggested that he is not a leading contender.

Eriksson remains the firm favourite of the media, but Soccernet has been told that Al Fayed was concerned about his salary demands.

That has now been put into perspective by the former England manager's representative. Athole Still, the highly respected agent of Eriksson, has refused to comment to Soccerneton his client's prospects, but revealed that Eriksson earned €300,000, not the reported £2 million, for three months' work with Ivory Coast prior to and during the World Cup finals in South Africa.

Kia Joorabchian, who represents Hughes, has also told Soccernet that the reported £7 million-a-year he is said to have demanded from West Ham to succeed Gianfranco Zola is way off the mark.

Jol has unfinished business in English football after being sacked by Spurs and would love another crack at the Premier League, but Fulham may not be the right club for the man who is in charge of Dutch side Ajax.

Alan Curbishley is another who can be crossed off the list of candidates, even though the former West Ham boss was initially informed he was a stand-by possibility.
