If the squad had to be picked now who would you give the nod to?

Hart
Butland
Foster

Baines
Gibbs/Cresswell
Smalling
Stones
Cahill
Scott Dann (I don't rate Jagielka)
Clyne

Henderson
Delph/ Shelvey
Deli Alli
Drinkwater
Barkley
Lallana
Sterling
Walcott
Townsend

Rooney
Kane
Vardy
Welbeck/Defoe

Standby
Forster
Gibbs/Cresswell
Shelvey/ Delph
Ibe
Welbeck/Defoe

My starting line up

                         Hart
Clyne     Stones Smalling   Baines

                 Henderson  Alli

Sterling          Rooney         Vardy

                        Kane

And there's so many players I've missed out. The options at the minute are very exciting. The likes of Ward Prowse, Wilshere,  Berahino, Grealish, Shaw, Dier, Zaha, Carrick, Jay Rodriguez, Milner and Jagielka. The list goes on and on. I don't remember having these options for a long time. The biggest weakness for me is defensive midfield. I don't think Henderson or Delph are good enough but imo it's our best chance in a long time to do something in a tournament. All the other countries aren't great.

I reckon it will he between us and France. And I never get optimistic with England.

Agreed. On paper at least, this England side is the strongest in years. Smalling, Barkley, Sterling and Kane have become integral players for their clubs since the last World Cup and the likes of Butland, Dier, Stones, Alli and Vardy have emerged from nowhere. We are clearly a much stronger outfit than we were 2 years ago, however, I can't remember the last time England actually delivered in a major tournament?

Still, my picks (fitness pending):

Hart, Butland, Forster

Shaw, Clyne, Bertrand, Smalling, Stones, Cahill, Dann

Sterling, Walcott, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Lallana, Wilshere, Barkley, Dier, Alli, Drinkwater

Rooney, Kane, Vardy, Sturridge

Outside bets such as Shelvey, Loftus-Cheek, Berahino etc. could easily force their way in before June.

Forgot about Sturridge!  To be fair though, if I'm picking it now I think he is a liability with his injuries so not sure it's a no brainer like it should be. No matter what squad people pick it's fair to say the options are very good

FPT

Goalkeepers:
Joe Hart, Jack Butland, Fraser Forster

Defenders:
Nathaniel Clyne, John Stones, Chris Smalling, Gary Cahill, Scott Dann/Ryan Shawcross, Danny Rose, Ryan Bertrand;

Midfielders:
Theo Walcott, Raheem Sterling, Eric Dier, Dele Alli, Ross Barkley, Jordan Henderson, Fabian Delph, Michael Carrick, Adam Lallana,

Forwards:
Wayne Rooney, Harry Kane, Jamie Vardy,

That's 22 players in my squad, and I've not touched Kyle Walker, Phil Jagielka, one of Scott Dann or Ryan Shawcross, Leighton Baines, Aaron Cresswell, Luke Shaw (injury), Andros Townsend, Jonjo Shelvey, James Milner, Jack Wilshere, Ryan Mason, Danny Drinkwater, James Ward-Prowse, Jesse Lingard, Jordan Ibe, Demarai Grya, Marc Albrighton, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Andy Carroll, Charlie Austin, Daniel Sturridge, Danny Welbeck.

My first choice side would be:

-------------Hart
Clyne Stones Smalling Rose
----------Dier Alli
Sterling--Rooney---Barkley
-------------Kane

Eric Dier is our best performing defensive midfielder - is comfortable in that position, has a relationship with Dele Alli (the best performing central midfielder) and Dier can sit allowing Alli, Sterling, Rooney, Barkley and Kane to focus on the attacking game - happy doing his defensive duties.

For games in which we'd surrender the ball, I'd put Vardy and Walcott in for Kane and Barkley to give a counter attacking threat.

I can't give a Euros spot to Welbeck, Wilshere, Sturridge, Shaw etc for their injuries. I think Callum Wilson could have staked a claim for a spot but he's been out pretty much all season and will likely only play the last 10 or so.

FPT

To bump this up with another point, the youth potential for England is as good as it's been for a long time. If, like me, you consider a player of 24 years of age and below to be a 'young player' you've got:

Jack Butland,
Jordan Pickford,

Nathaniel Clyne,

Phil Jones,
John Stones,
Joe Gomez,

Luke Shaw,

Eric Dier,
Dele Alli,
Ross Barkley,
Jonjo Shelvey,
Ryan Mason,
Jack Wilshere,
Will Hughes,
James Ward-Prowse,

Jesse Lingard,
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain,
Raheem Sterling,
Andros Townsend,
Nathan Redmond,

Danny Ings,
Harry Kane,
James Wilson,

And that's just people in the immediate future - not looking at those yet to break through fully like Reece Oxford, Patrick Roberts or Dom Solanke.

Don't forget Bettinelli! Has the potential to be a future England squad player.

The classic Fulham diamond lol. Based on current form (though I'd be tempted to swap in Cahill for Stones on the basis he will be back in the Chelsea team now)

Why does Rooney get mentioned ? He just slows the game down.Too old and past it .

Because you need some experienced heads in that team, and on his day, is still the best English player.

Dr Know

Agree 100% wm.Like beckham he seems to get picked everytime regardless of form for man u. England have to drop him to move on .

Vinnieffc

What about that England keeper off the TV ads ? Think his name is Dan Druff.

Same - He still has flashes of ability but in general just isn't that player any more. Vardy and Kane both deserve to be in the team ahead of him, and even in a withdrawn role Alli and Barkley (and others) are having a much better season that Rooney
