I want to give a shout out for Judee Sill - a brilliant singer/songwriter, who had a difficult, and short, life.

She was the first artist signed by David Geffen to his Asylum label, but was then basically sacked by him and all financial and PR support stopped, after two albums which were very well received, because she allegedly made a joke about him, and never made another record, and died young from drugs. She is now seen as the great talent she was.

Like Joni Mitchell, Judee Sill was easy to listen to but not a great singer in my opinion. Loved her most famous song Jesus was a Crossmaker. I think she was signed to Apple wasn't she?

If I had to pick between Streisand and Linda Ronstadt, Ronstadt wins hands down.   She could sing the phone book and I'd listen.  What a talent!

Some people are very good singers (many are not famous or successful); others are just good at getting themselves promoted and selling records.

Anne Briggs is/was a wonderful singer but only made one record because it was successful and she didn't want to become famous.
