The former Manchester United defender is a free agent after leaving Arsenal at the end of last season and has attracted plenty of interest.

Fulham have considered him as they weigh up alternatives to Phillipe Senderos but wanted more pace in that area - although his ability to cover at left-back also came under consideration.

However, a deal should be struck for Rafik Halliche from Benfica today and Marseille have now stepped in for Silvestre.

Wigan and Bolton to a lesser degree had also pondered a move for Silvestre while there have been offers from Austria, Germany and the Middle East.

The 33-year-old may now find a return to France and ambitious Marseille his best alternative.
