It's Fulham at the death against Wigan as Neeskens claims debut goal
Whites end up with all three points and a 3-2 win but have to come from behind to put Latics under the sword

A late Neeskens Kebano debut goal stole victory for Fulham at the death against a resilient Wigan.

Returning to the starting line-up for the first time in more than a month, Floyd Ayite got the Whites started when he tapped home from Sone Aluko's jinking run.

But the lead didn't last long, as full-back Scott Malone horrifically sliced into his own net from Stephen Warnock's cross.

Early promise: Floyd Ayite celebrates 1-0 to Whites

And Michael Jacobs slotted into an empty net in first-half injury time to turn the tables on the hosts, after a fine Max Powers cross.

But full-back Denis Odoi slammed home an outrageous 35 yard effort past substitute goalkeeper Matt Gilks to leave the hosts with hope, and the returning forward from the Africa Cup of Nations stole the headlines.

Fulham and five things against Wigan that led to a last-gasp victory
Whites end up with all three points and a 3-2 win but have to come from behind to put Latics under the sword

It ended well when Neeskens Kebano snatched a final-minute goal to lead Fulham to victory.

But what about the game as a whole? A few points to consider here.

Ayite's return is welcome

Fulham's Togo international winger has been lighting up the Cottage in glimpses this season only to be foiled by injury, or away on African Cup of Nations duty.

He was reinstalled in the starting line up for the first time since the Whites' 2-0 win at Ipswich in December.

And the 28-year-old, signed from Bastia in the summer, made an immediate impact, scoring from close range after a fine ball into the box by Sone Aluko.

He also looked a threat, nearly setting up new boy Cyriac to head home.

On guard: Tim Ream makes his presence known

Defensive shuffling left Fulham vulnerable

Slavisa Jokanovic was forced into a defensive double change - with Ryan Fredericks on a three-match ban against Birmingham last time out, and Tomas Kalas out with a hip problem.

It meant having to throw Michael Madl and Denis Odoi into what has been a fragile defence this season.

And the inexperience showed, with the Whites defensively a mess in the first half - conceding twice from self-inflicted situations.

Frustrating inconsistency

Whites have outshone plenty of sides this season, only to be undone by a lack of concentration.

As a result, their ninth place position in the Championship does not lie, but it will be a source of great frustration that they have not been able to string some wins together.

They have only managed to win back-to-back in the league twice all season, and that inconsistency could well cost them a place in the play-offs come the season's end.

And the manner of which they conceded against Wigan - an own goal and a simple tap in - will have set Jokanovic's blood boiling.

Chill: Slavisa Jokanovic feels the February frost

Possession doesn't always pay

Yes, it's not new but it's still as relevant to Fulham's season as ever. Despite owning more than 70% of possession in the first half, the hosts went into the break 2-1 down.

And it could've been three, so it was hardly undeserved for Wigan. But while Jokanovic's Fulham can play some scintillating football at times, they are still as fragile as ever defensively.

Kalas and Fredericks may well have been ruled out, but the Whites have been making similar sorts of errors throughout the season and must stop if they want to turn any remaining top six hopes into a reality.

Ball watcher: Stefan Johansen is head down

It came good in the end but Fulham are their own worst enemy

At the start of the season, the Cottagers were surprisingly one of the worst home sides in the league - despite Craven Cottage historically being their fortress.

And the match...

A late Neeskens Kebano debut goal stole victory for Fulham at the death against a resilient Wigan.

Returning to the starting line-up for the first time in more than a month, Floyd Ayite got the Whites started when he tapped home from Sone Aluko's jinking run.

Head Coach Reaction

Slaviša Jokanović was not entirely happy after watching his Fulham side snatch a late victory at home to Wigan Athletic.

Second half goals from Denis Odoi and Neeskens Kebano – the latter arriving in the 94th minute – saw the Whites come from behind to claim an important 3-2 win at Craven Cottage.

"I can be proud of my team's desire to score the goals to win the game, but from another side I was really disappointed with some parts of the game," Jokanović stated in his post-match press conference.

"We weren't solid enough, we didn't show a good enough attitude or desire to defend, or when we were playing without the ball, and this is an important part of football, too.

"It's not important that we have 73 per cent possession of the ball if you cannot fix the problem without the ball. This kind of present we gave them today is simply not acceptable. If we don't improve this part of the game we cannot be successful.

"I expect I'm going to find something different on Tuesday night [against Nottingham Forest] and we're going to be still better in some parts of the game.

"At the end we scored the third goal and we go home satisfied with the points, but I'm not satisfied with what we offered today."

He continued: "We are working so hard to be more solid and more competitive. I'm always after the clean sheet.

"Today we made ourselves a bit nervous without any pressure from the opposition team. We weren't strong enough to stop [Omar] Bogle – this kid pushed us and did some big damage to us. This is not acceptable and we need to stop this kind of situation."

Fulham 3 2 Wigan Athletic

Fulham signed Denis Odoi from Belgian club Lokeren last summer

Neeskens Kebano scored a stoppage-time winner as Fulham beat Championship strugglers Wigan at Craven Cottage.

Floyd Ayite put the hosts ahead from close range, but the Latics drew level when Scott Malone turned Stephen Warnock's cross into his own net.

Michael Jacobs slid in Max Power's cross to put the visitors ahead in first-half stoppage-time.

Denis Odoi's superb 35-yard shot found the bottom corner for Fulham and Kebano curled home in a dramatic finish.

Fulham, looking to extend a club record 16-match unbeaten run against Wigan, started brightly but the visitors fought back and could have been further ahead at half-time after Omar Bogle hit the side-netting with only keeper David Button to beat.

Wigan lost goalkeeper Jakob Haugaard to injury at half-time, with Matt Gilks taking over, but again went close to a third goal when Bogle was denied by Button.

Sone Aluko hit the crossbar with a shot for the hosts before Odoi's stunning strike levelled the scores.

The match looked likely to become the 11th draw between the sides in the last 17 meetings until Kebano struck on his return from Africa Cup of Nations duty with DR Congo.

Fulham move up a place to ninth - within six points of the play-off places - following their win, while Wigan remain next to bottom and five points from safety.

Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic:

"I can be proud about my team on one hand that we scored goals and won the game, but on the other hand I am really disappointed with some parts of the game.

"We have to be more solid, we did not show enough of a good attitude, and we did not play well without the ball.

"At 1-1 it can be a simple lottery, they can win the game too. Then we scored the goals and we go home satisfied with the points. But I am not satisfied with what we offered today."

Wigan manager Warren Joyce:

"It's bitterly disappointing, we didn't deserve to lose. At 2-1 we were comfortable, really. It was a rush of blood, the free-kick for Fulham's equaliser was avoidable.

"It was a silly free-kick to give away. It was a long way out but we were not organised. It was a poor goal to give away.

"It didn't rattle us, we kept going even though the home crowd is up for it, and I still think we had good opportunities."

Kebano caps Fulham comeback
by DAN on FEBRUARY 11, 2017

Neeskens Kebano's first goal for Fulham will live long in the memory. It seemed as though Slavisa Jokanovic's side had contrived to administer a devastating blow to their own play-off ambitions by gifting Wigan Athletic a timely win in their own battle against the job but the Congolese winger had other ideas. Fulham, furiously throwing men forward in search of salvation after a long-distance drive from Denis Odoi had drawn them level, patiently worked the Latics defence from side to side until Kebano, hitherto most notable for a dreaful headed miss against QPR, surged onto a perfectly weighted pass from Tom Cairney and steered home a last-gasp winner.

The celebrations were joyous, befitting the smuggling of three points that Fulham had appeared so eager to throw away. Having scored a wonderfully worked opening goal where the mesmerising nature of Sone Aluko's running down the right was matched by the measured accuracy of Floyd Ayite's finish, Jokanovic's side against demonstrated just how porous their defence remains without Tomas Kalas. The on-loan Chelsea centre half was sidelined with a thigh injury and, in his absence, the home side managed to concede two goals in twelve minutes at the end of the first half.

They had already enjoyed an almighty let off when David Button went for a wander out of his goal with Tim Ream under pressure from Omar Bogle and when the lively striker – one of many linked with a move to Craven Cottage over the past six months – robbed Ream of the ball, he would have been slightly disappointed only to find the side netting from an acute angle. Bogle's disappointment didn't last long. The former Grimsby forward, who posed real problems for the Fulham back line all afternoon, was the intended target for Stephen Warnock's floated cross from the left and Bogle's mere presence prompted Scott Malone to turn the ball into his own net with Button rooted to his line.

Worse was to come before half-time for Fulham, who saw Stefan Johansen's strong run and cross narrowly elude Chris Martin and Tom Cairney prod an instinctive effort narrowly wide but ultimately wound up going in at the break behind. David Perkins' pass found Max Power in plenty of room down the left and his low cut back found Michael Jacobs with oceans of room at the far post to simply turn home from a few yards out. People might have scoffed in midweek when Sky pundit Peter Beagrie suggested Fulham's propensity to concede silly goals would cost them dear, but this ending to a first half they largely dominated proved him right.

Wigan were forced into a goalkeeping change at half time with Matt Gilks replacing Jakob Haugaard, who had sustained a head injury in a nasty clash with Johansen during the first period, but Warren Joyce's side looked just as dangerous up the other end after the break. Button saved smartly with his feet to deny the lively Bogle after the striker had turned Ream inside out to reach Power's pass and Joyce's side were certainly not merely content to protect their advantage.

The visitors were defensively resolute for long periods, belying their lowly status in the Championship table. Aluko saw a shot smuggled away to safety by Gilks after a barnstroming run down the right and when he did beat the substitute keeper with a dipping effort from just outside the penalty area, the Nigerian's strike clipped the top of the crossbar. Jokanovic then threw on Cyriac, whose pace and clever runs posed a different challenge to the Wigan defenders than Martin, and Kebano in an attempt to enliven Fulham – but the home side's equaliser came from a particularly unlikely source.

Both Cyriac and Kebano had opportunities to level matters, but the leveller arrived when Johansen worked a free-kick short to Odoi, whose first-time shot from 25 yards rushed through a crowd of legs and seemed to surprise Gilks. The full back, restored to the starting line-up in place of the suspended Ryan Fredericks, celebrated with a backflip almost as eye-catching as remarkable bit of skill against Newcastle on the season's opening night. Odoi's goal set up a storming and ridiculously open final 20 minutes, with both sides pushing for a winner.

Button produced an excellent reaction stop to repel a Jacobs' effort at his near post and an excellent individual run from Callum Connolly almost created an opening for the visitors in stoppage time, but it was Fulham whose persistent probing would eventually be rewarded as the clock ticked down. Substitute Scott Parker found Cairney in space outside the box and the captain's measured pass saw Kebano gamble and shift the ball inside one defender before finding the far corner with a composed finish in the last minute of added time.

Jokanovic 'disappointed' despite Fulham win
by DAN on FEBRUARY 11, 2017

Slavisa Jokanovic was 'disappointed with some parts' of Fulham's game despite the Whites claiming all three points thanks against Wigan Athletic in a five-goal thriller at Craven Cottage.

The Whites' came from behind to seal a win that keeps their play-off hopes alive thanks to a first goal from Neeskens Kebano at the death, but their Serbian head coach was unhappy with what he described as basic errors that allowed the Latics to hold a half-time lead. Jokanovic was particularly damning of the defensive display and a lack of urgency from midfield that allow Wigan to look menacing on the counter attack.

He told his post-match press conference after the final whistle:

I can be proud of my team's desire to score the goals to win the game, but from another side I was really disappointed with some parts of the game. We weren't solid enough, we didn't show a good enough attitude or desire to defend, or when we were playing without the ball, and this is an important part of football, too.

Fulham U18s 3 - 0 Southampton U18s

Two Michael Elstone strikes and an own goal gave all three points to Fulham in a hard earned win over Southampton.

Fulham beat Southampton 3-0 on Saturday at Motspur Park in a thrilling encounter. Super sub Jayden Harris was directly involved with all three goals. An own goal from Southampton and two from the boot of Michael Elstone made sure that Fulham walked away with all three points after a tremendous second half.

Fulham came into this game fifth in the table, having won their last match against Arsenal FC in a 3-2 victory at home. The Whites had been undefeated in their previous three games, and were looking to keep their momentum alive with a second win on the bounce.

Southampton last time out lost to the Gunners 1-0 and are sat tenth in the table, with only one win in their previous thirteen appearances.

It was difficult conditions from the start as it snowing heavily for the first 45 minutes of the match. Southampton played a compact game in the middle of the park, and the opening 20 minutes were contested evenly, with chances falling at both ends.

Southampton grew into the game and gained control, making it difficult for Fulham to settle on the ball and sent many balls out wide to their winger Siph Mdlalose, but Dan Martin was exceptional at marshalling him out of play after each attack.

Just before the break Joe Felix darted forward from the right past several players in black shirts and cut a ball back to Nicolas Santos-Clase. He managed to curled a ball with his left foot inches over the bar as Saints' keeper Kingsley Latham rooted to the spot.

Straight into the second half and the weather relented during the break. Felix joined the attack again down the right, Cruyff turned and swung a ball in with his weak foot that was close to be put away but no one got a decent connection and score remained level.

The game turned on its head after the break and Fulham stretched Southampton wide, they were allowed more possession of the ball and dictated play. The Saints quickly found themselves on the back foot.

In the 56th minute Atli Andrason made way for Jayden Harris. It took 15 minutes of him being on the pitch until the first goal came. Harris played a one-two with Santos-Clase, then slotted a perfectly weighted pass through to Michael Elstone who had split directly through two defenders. With a one on one with the goalie he never looked liked missing as he knocked the ball right past Latham to give the Whites the advantage.

Minutes later again attacking up the pitch, Santos-Clase threw the ball in to Harris, who hit it hard into the box and an outstretched Southampton leg steered the ball into their own net to double Fulham's lead.

To round off a superb ten minutes of play, Harris involved once again, pounced on a stray pass high up the pitch. He ran at goal, shot hard and low to his left as the goalie managed to get a glove to it and palmed it wide. Elstone, however, was on hand to smash the ball past him to seal the victory.

Taye Ashby-Hammond either side of the final goal made a couple of fantastic saves, as he had done throughout the 90 minutes to keep a clean sheet for the Whites.

A well earned three points for Fulham with a great team performance and some outstanding individual ones; now they look forward to their next game against Tottenham.
