Daryl Murphy gives 3 reasons why Fulham beat Newcastle

Daryl Murphy was a man alone against Fulham and United never ever looked like getting anything once going behind.

Newcastle went down 3-1 to Fulham on Saturday and Daryl Murphy was quizzed after the final whistle.

A certain irony in asking the only player to do himself justice, what went wrong.

Maybe though Daryl Murphy was in the ideal place to answer that, having watched from the bench as the visitors went three goals up in the first hour, before the Republic of Ireland international was belatedly called from the bench.

When asked where things had gone wrong on the anniversary of Rafa Benitez' first anniversary at the club, Daryl Murphy came up with three.

He pointed out the individual mistakes that were made in the build-up to the goals. Then on top of that, Murphy thinks that the Fulham players were given too much time on the ball and played through Newcastle far too easily.

For anybody who didn't see the game, this was no fluke result, Fulham completely dominated for most of the match and toyed with Newcastle at times.

It wasn't a disgrace to lose to a team who played very well on the day BUT it is worrying just how bad Newcastle were and didn't have any real answers to get back into the match.

Daryl Murphy scored an excellent individual goal and his link-up play was superb as he found a Newcastle player almost every time with his passes and knock-downs – but he was a man alone yesterday and United never ever looked like getting anything once going behind.

Daryl Murphy speaking to NUFC TV:

"Obviously we are all disappointed. Don't think we performed anywhere near as good as we can, so that's probably the most disappointing."

'Can you put your finger on what went wrong?'

"Obviously a few mistakes for some of the goals but I think we just gave them too much time on the ball and I think they played through us too easily.

"As I said, really disappointed but the game has gone and we can't do anything about it, so all we can do is go and train and put it right next game."

'Another goal – you seemed to make a difference when you came on?'

"It's always nice to get a goal but at the end of the day it counted for nothing.

"I was obviously brought on to try and change it, try and nick a goal – which I did, but we just couldn't get the second one.

"I think if we had got another one we maybe could have got something from the game but it wasn't to be."

Fulham goalkeeper David Button admits he was always confident of a victory at Newcastle
The 28-year-old stopper had very little to do at St James' Park and he admits he was always sure Fulham would get a result in Newcastle

David Button admits he was always confident that Fulham would win at Newcastle but didn't expect them to do it in the manner they did.

A first half strike from Tom Cairney and a brace from Ryan Sessgnon ensured Slavisa Jokanovic's side did the double over the league leaders while closing the gap to the play-offs to two points.

The stopper had very little to do in truth, but he was quick off his line when needed whilst also showing good hands to snuff out any Newcastle crosses, but he will be disappointed to concede to a late Daryl Murphy strike.

But that aside, Button was pleased with the way the side performed and has challenged them to use this as a springboard for the rest of the campaign.

He said: "It was a pleasure to watch and the lads were brilliant from start to finish and we deserved the win.

"I was confident that we would win and give them a good game but I don't think anyone expected us to go 3-0 up away at a place like this so credit to everyone who is involved and hopefully we can use this as a springboard for the rest of the season.

"Unfortunately we didn't keep a clean sheet today but everything else was pretty solid and hopefully the team have confidence in me and that allows them to focus on their own game.

"As has been the case a lot this season, the amount of ball we have and the way we play means I won't have a load to do so I just need to concentrate and make sure I'm there when called upon.

Slavisa Jokanovic explains the tactics behind classy Fulham's win over Newcastle

Rafa Benitez and Slavisa Jokanovic

Slavisa Jokanovic backed Newcastle United to return to the Premier League – after revealing how Fulham stopped them playing at St James's Park.

Jokanovic's side won 3-1 at St James's Park yesterday thanks to a strike from Tom Cairney and two goals from teenager Ryan Sessegnon.

Newcastle are still top of the Championship, but they only lead second-placed Brighton and Hove Albion by goal difference.

The result saw seventh-placed Fulham narrow the gap between themselves and the play-off to two points.

Manager Jokanovic said: "I believe Newcastle will be a Premier League team.

"They play different style of football. They are physical and a very strong team. We expected they were going to try to attack behind the full-backs, we avoided this kind of situation. After 36 games, I'm going to be really surprised if Newcastle don't play in the Premier League.

"We played very good football. We tried to win the game. Our style, we move the ball, we had control. We were more clinical.

"I believe at the end my team deserved the result. It's a great step for us. Everything is open, some teams have more points than what we have right now.

"We are not in a position to think about being a promoted team, but we are going to push hard for the top six. If you have enough strength for this, then we have a 25% chance to be a Premier League team next season."

On 16-year-old Sessegnon's remarkable contribution, Jokanovic added: "Sessegnon is working very well.

"We tried to use him in a little bit of a different position, but in the past we have used him in more of an offensive position.

"We expected that he could find the space in behind the back four of Newcastle and he did that twice.

"He finished with a great level of quality, and he completed a very good football game and he must be satisfied with the team and himself too."

Odoi: Signal Sent

Following a comprehensive win at one of the toughest places to visit as a travelling team in the Championship, Denis Odoi was satisfied by the performance of a confident Fulham outfit.

A first-half Tom Cairney strike had given the Whites a slender advantage but a quick-fire double from Ryan Sessegnon at the start of the second half saw the Whites eventually run out 3-1 winners over table-topping Newcastle United.

A muted St.James' Park was stunned into submission by a virtuoso Fulham performance.

"I think we put on one of our best performances of the season," Odoi told the Club's official website. "We can be very satisfied with how we played the ball around and the way we played as a team.

"It gives us a massive boost heading into our upcoming games.

"We know technically as a team we are a top three team but the game is more than just playing the ball and technical things.

"You also have to defend and defend as a team and we have not done that a few times.

"But today we are very satisfied and Newcastle seems like a team that really suits us well."

With Newcastle slowly working their way back into the encounter at the start of the second half, Ryan Sessegnon produced two fine finishes on the counter to give Fulham a three goal cushion.

With the victory with Whites clawed to within two points of Sheffield Wednesday after results went the way of Fulham on a superb day at St.James' Park.

Despite the gap shrinking week by week Odoi is keen for Fulham to remain grounded and take each game at a time.

"Our goal is to be in the top six," he said. "We want to be there at the end of the season and play in the play-offs.

"Today we made a strong case for that and we will be pushing to get into those places and then hold on to that spot.

"We have been playing all the teams and we just feel like football wise we are often better than our opponent.

"But sometimes it's the case that we concede to early or miss chances.

"But we know where we want to be and that's the top six.

"The gaffer wants to play with a lot of possession and that shows on the pitch and I also think that we showed it today.

"We can keep the ball and with runners around we are very strong in possession."

Attention now turns to Tuesday night against Blackburn Rovers at Craven Cottage. A side battling for their Championship lives and enjoying a mini revival since the departure of Owen Coyle.

Odoi is adamant the team must be ready for a physical encounter against Rovers and be ready for a different footballing encounter having enjoyed a lot of time and space against the Magpies.

"They are fighting against relegation so they will be giving their all to stay in the League," the right-back said. "They will be giving 100%.

"But it's the Championship and we know that we cannot always play against teams who play football.

"We need to fight and if you want to be in the top six you need to compete against these teams.

"If we get in the top six or if we don't it's because of our own fault.

"We sent out a signal today and we want to do that on Tuesday. It shows that we are not just relaxing. We are hunting for that place in the top six and hopefully we can get a positive result on Saturday as well."

Fulham man attracting from five time European champions

Fulham wide man Ryan Sessegnon is attracting interest from Liverpool, according to a report in the Sun.

16-year-old Sessegnon has been superb for the Cottagers since breaking into the team this season, and looks set to be one of the brightest talents in the game should he continue along the same development path.

However, Fulham will do well to keep hold of their man, and with Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp now sniffing around, it could mean a move might well be on the cards this summer.

Sessegnon put a further stamp on his impressive ability yesterday, when he managed to score two goals in a superb 3-1 win at Newcastle United for the in form playoff chasing side.

This was not just a one off though for the impressive left sided player, and he has delivered on more than one occasion this season for Slavisa Jokanovic.

The Cottagers are now just two points shy of a playoff place, and hold a crucial game in hand over Sheffield Wednesday in the race for the top six.

'Get him back' - Watford fans impressed with Slaviša Jokanović's Fulham as they beat Newcastle

Some Watford fans have been calling for Fulham boss Slaviša Jokanović to return to Vicarage Road as manager after he masterminded an impressive 3-1 win at Newcastle United.

Jokanović took the Hornets to the Premier League two seasons ago, but never got the chance to manage them there as he was replaced by Quique Sanchez-Flores.

He was appointed at Craven Cottage in December 2015 and guided them to safety.

Yesterday's victory at the St James' Park was the Cottagers' fifth in their last seven games and coupled with Sheffield Wednesday's defeat at Aston Villa, means they are just three points off the play-off places.

The Hornets meanwhile have endured a tough three months, winning just three Premier League games since the start of December.

And it's not just Watford fans who are looking at Fulham with envy; Middlesbrough and Norwich City fans have noticed what he is again doing in the Championship.

Middlesbrough and Watford fans cast jealous glances towards Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic
Serbian's job in improving Whites has led to envious fans wanting him in charge of their clubs

Slavisa Jokanovic's job in turning Fulham's fortunes around has not gone unnoticed by other clubs.

Former club Watford have had a difficult time of late and fans are keen to see the Serbian return to Vicarage Road, where he became the third manager after Graham Taylor and Aidy Boothroyd to take the Hornets to the top flight.

And their supporters are keen to see Jokanovic return to Hertfordshire in the summer with current boss Walter Mazzarri losing support among the Watford faithful.

Supporters of Premier League strugglers Middlesbrough have also grown weary of boss Aitor Karaoke.

The former Real Madrid number two has spent a lot of money but his turgid style of play has come unstuck in the top flight this season and supporters feel it is time for a change with Jokanovic's passing game, expertly demonstrated against Newcastle, turning supporters' heads.

Jokanovic, though, has gone on record previously saying how happy he is at Fulham and recently agreed a new two year contract at the club.

The Whites know they have a good thing going so any approach is likely to be met with a flat rejection from the club's hierarchy.

Fulham star believes, technically, the Whites are a top three side after Newcastle win
The west Londoners stated that case to great effect on Saturday as they put league leaders Newcastle to the sword at St James' Park

Fulham defender Denis Odoi believes that the Whites are a top three side, when it comes to technical ability on the ball.

The west Londoners stated that case to great effect on Saturday as they put league leaders Newcastle to the sword at St James' Park.

Tom Cariney opened the scoring with a fine strike before 16-year-old Ryan Sessegnon's brace put Fulham 3-0 up.

Daryl Murphy pulled a goal back late on but the Magpies were well and truly outclassed.

"I think we put on one of our best performances of the season," Odoi told the club's official website.

Head over heels: Denis Odoi

"We can be very satisfied with how we played the ball around and the way we played as a team.

"It gives us a massive boost heading into our upcoming games.

"We know technically as a team we are a top three team but the game is more than just playing the ball and technical things.

"You also have to defend and defend as a team and we have not done that a few times.

"But today we are very satisfied and Newcastle seems like a team that really suits us well."

Victory at home to relegation battlers Blackburn will lift Fulham into the play-off spots at the expense of Sheffield Wednesday.

It would also put them a point behind fifth placed Reading and a further two behind fourth placed Leeds. The teams finishing third and fourth gain home advantage in the second leg of the play-offs.

"Our goal is to be in the top six," Odoi said.

Leeds held as Fulham reduce gap

LEEDS United, Reading and Sheffield Wednesday face a nervous run-in towards the SkyBet Championship play-offs as Fulham continue to close the gap on the trio of promotion contenders.

As the in-form Cottagers stormed to a 3-1 victory at leaders Newcastle United, the fourth-placed Whites dropped two precious home points after struggling to a 0-0 draw against Queens Park Rangers at Elland Road.

That reduced United's advantage over seventh-placed Fulham to six points but Reading and Wednesday are also sweating after defeats at Preston and Aston Villa respectively.

If Fulham win their game in hand tomorrow against Blackburn Rovers, they will leap-frog the Owls into a play-off slot just three points behind Leeds.

Manager Garry Monk is confident his side will bounce back from this weekend's sub-standard display but it doesn't get any easier for Leeds whose next match is a home battle against second-placed Brighton on Saturday evening.

"There are no excuses from us. We didn't do enough to win the game," he said. "We were below the standards, especially at Elland Road, of what we usually set.

"The positives are that we kept a clean sheet and we got a point. Other teams around us lost and this is another useful point," Monk added.

It could have been worse for Leeds as the free-running Conor Washington drew a fine save from Rob Green, who was making his 600th League appearance, as Rangers set the early pace.

Leeds failed to register a shot on target as top scorer Chris Wood was snuffed out by what was effectively a back five.

With United's midfield moving the ball too slowly, the visitors had plenty of time to drop back and deny the home side any space.

In contrast, the London side broke with pace to keep central defenders Kyle Bartley and Pontus Jansson at full stretch.

Rangers boss Ian Holloway said: "We carved out the better chances. Our game-plan was to counter and take the game to them. We applied ourselves brilliantly against one the best teams in this league."

Luke Ayling picked up a booking which rules him out of the next two crucial games against Brighton and play-off rivals Reading on April 1.

For those two games Gaetano Beradi is expected to switch flanks to right-back with Charlie Taylor returning on the left hand side of the defence.

That problem looks fairly easy to solve but the trickier task for Monk is to get his midfield functioning properly.

With Pablo Hernandez going through a bad spell, and little coming from out-wide, Leeds have struggled to find a creative spark. It promises to be a hair-raising ride in the battle for the play-off slots.

Injured duo to be assessed

Tony Mowbray hopes that Charlie Mulgrew and Sam Gallagher will overcome minor knocks to be involved in Tuesday night's match with Fulham.

The pair missed Saturday's 2-2 draw at Norwich City with tight hamstrings, something the manager felt was the outcome of playing so many matches in such a short space of time.

However, if the injured duo come through training on Monday morning then it is likely that they'll be included in the travelling party for the Craven Cottage clash.

"Charlie had a test on Saturday morning," revealed the Rovers boss. "It was a bit frustrating really, he was fine after the game and he trained Friday and from what I'm hearing he did some extra physical activity, some runs, some stride-outs like he normally does before a game.

"My view is that it is probably an overload injury from all the games that he has played and that he has probably gone over the line a little bit with doing too much.

"He felt a bit uncomfortable, had a test and decided it wasn't right for him. But it was good for Tommie Hoban to come back.

"It is the same with Sam, again I think it is an overload injury particularly from the games program and the amount of running that he does in each match.

"I'm pretty sure they won't be too long. We need to assess it and get them in on Monday and see if they are going to join in training and make a decision."

Tickets for the match at Fulham are on open sale priced at £20 for Adults, £15 for Seniors 65+ and 18-21 year-olds, £10 for fans aged 17 and under.

Ones to watch: 3 lower league stars Fulham must be keeping tabs on

Fulham manager Slaviša Jokanović has seemingly got the squad he wants at Craven Cottage after he deemed the west London club to be his next project – previously being Watford – whom he gained promotion with to the top-flight.

The Cottagers' current league position shows that as well with them lying just one place and two points behind Sheffield Wednesday, with a game in hand as well.

John-Joe O'Toole

The Northampton Town midfielder has really been a bright spark in a disappointing campaign for the Cobblers, with the team lingering in mid-table having enjoyed an impressive run to a League Two title back in May.

John-Joe O'Toole has appeared has turned out for over 110 matches for his employer since making a move to Sixfields in 2014 from Bristol Rovers, but it is especially this year the former Republic of Ireland under-21 international has caught the eye.

The 28-year-old has bagged himself ten league goals this season and his contract is up at the club this summer, meaning a move from Fulham isn't miles away but the Cottagers should keep him on their radar to track the progress.

John Marquis

John Marquis has almost become a cult hero at Doncaster Rovers with the striker's 20 goals in League Two and the Yorkshire outfit comfortably sitting top of the pile in the fourth tier.

He joined them in the summer after being surplus to requirements at Millwall, although that would turn out to be a mistake as the 24 year-old is one of the hottest and most wanted players in the Football League.

Fulham may well be wanting to find a new forward in the upcoming transfer window having lost Matt Smith in January. Marquis's improvement is nothing short of pleasing and the Championship side will want to scout him for the remainder of the campaign and perhaps even make a move soon.

John Akinde

The Cottagers are surely looking for a tough, pacey and strong striker to complete their squad and John Akinde is certainly someone they should be looking at over the next few months.

Akinde, 27, has been playing in a Barnet shirt since 2014 after impressing in non-league, and it came to no shock that the League Two team were adamant to keep hold of their star forward at the end of last season.

He unsurprisingly put pen-to-paper on a three-year deal in May at the Hive Stadium and his phenomenal form has continued as he is the division's top goal scorer with 21 goals – a real threat Fulham could need in the not too distant future.

Chris Martin transfer saga takes new twist as Steve McClaren sacked by Derby
The now departed Rams boss had been keen to recall the Scottish striker from his loan spell at Fulham in January

The Chris Martin saga took another twist on Sunday night as Derby sacked Steve McClaren.

The now departed Rams boss had been keen to recall the Scottish striker from his loan spell at Fulham in January.

McClaren and Whites boss Slavisa Jokanovic exchanged a war of words at the turn of the year over Martin's future.

"I've made it clear that I like Chris Martin and if there's any possibility that we can get him back, then that's great. We just have to wait and see," McClaren said on New Year's Eve.

"From day one I've made my feelings on Chrissy clear. It's now up to the two clubs to sort that one out and for us managers to stay out of.

"The (transfer) window isn't open yet. There is a lot of speculation and people don't know the full extent of what is about to happen."

Bristol bristles: Bearded Slavisa Jokanovic at Ashton Gate

Jokanovic fired back two days later after the Whites lost 2-1 to Brighton.

He fired back: "I've spoken to him. We played against Derby four weeks ago and Steve asked me about Chris Martin and he explained to me that he liked this player.

"I explained that he is under contract and I want to stay with him and I recommended him looking in the market for another option. He probably doesn't understand my English very well."

Martin and Jokanovic appeared to reconcile before the game with Barnsley in January, where he scored.

The Serbian said at the time: "We resolved this situation inside the dressing room and he is 100 per cent committed with us.

"We believe in him. The team believe in him. The club believe in him."

On the scoresheet: Chris Martin (Photo: Ker Robertson/GettyImages)

Martin spoke to GetWestLondon after the 1-0 defeat against Reading but refused to air his dirty laundry in public and focus on his football.

He said: "I just want to concentrate on football. I need to look after myself and my family. I believe I put them first throughout my career.

"In January, that's been the case. People know there have been discussions. I'm not going to air my dirty laundry in public.

"All I want to do is focus on my football. I want to get over the disappointment of Reading but all players want to get on the pitch and play 90 minutes and I'm fortunate enough that I've managed to do that the last few games."

Former England boss: Steve McClaren

He signed a new contract at Derby but Jokanovic has previously said he wouldn't be returning to his parent club during the January Transfer Window - with Martin returning to the Fulham line up.

However, the 28-year-old was absent from the Cottagers' squad for their trip to South Wales, but his manager insists everything is normal and he expects him to play a big part in his side.

He said: "The situation is completely normal, he is working hard to try and improve himself and very soon I believe he will be at the optimal level to be a big part of the team and help us.

"Thanos (Petsos) is injured and Lucas is too but everyone else is available for the game tomorrow, and that includes Chris Martin."

McClaren's departure may now impact Martin's future and Fulham still have an option to sign the striker on a permanent basis in the summer.

WOODROW SAYS BREWERS HAD TO FIGHT HARD FOR FOREST WIN

BREWERS striker Cauley Woodrow says that it was a real scrap against Nottingham Forest and that Albion needed to battle all the way to get the 1-0 win.

He said: "It was definitely a scrap and we were having to throw our bodies on the line. John Brayford made an unbelievable block to stop them scoring.

"We had to keep working hard as a team and we need to keep getting points and winning."

Woodrow netted the only goal of the game from a free kick - his third strike since arriving on loan from Fulham in January.

He said: "Jackson (Irvine) won the free kick on the edge of the box, Lloyd Dyer said to me did I want to take it and I saw this little gap in the wall. I managed to put it through the gap as their keeper stepped to the right and that gave him no chance. So I'm delighted.

"I didn't hit it too well but that doesn't matter as long as it goes in."
Albion lost both Marvin Sordell and Luke Varney to injury and Woodrow was also struggling as the game ticked on.

"I hurt my knee in the second half but I was thinking we were running out of strikers. But it was just a little knock and I'm OK now."

Woodrow is delighted with the impact he and the other January recruits have made.

He said: "I don't want to come in say we are the saviours as the lads here before us were doing excellent to give the club a chance to stay up. The players who have come in have settled in quickly and it's important for us to help the other lads and do everything we can to keep Burton in this league."

Fulham stopper David Button believes Blackburn game is a 'free shot' at teams above them
Fulham play their game in hand when Blackburn visit the Cottage tomorrow night and Button is well aware of what a big game it is

Big game: David Button knows about tomorrow

Fulham stopper David Button thinks his side have a "free shot" at the teams above them when they take on Blackburn Rovers tomorrow night.

Slavisa Jokanovic's side play their game in hand when Blackburn visit the Cottage and a win would see them rise into the play-off places at the expense of Sheffield Wednesday.

While teams around them are faltering, Fulham are going from strength to strength as the Championship season reaches its climax and Button knows what a big game tomorrow night is, but he doesn't want to add any unwanted pressure.

He said: "It's a big game for us but I don't want to put too much pressure on it, it's our game in hand and in a way we have a free shot at the teams above us.

"We're gradually closing the gap and hopefully we can do that tomorrow night against Blackburn."
