Slavisa Jokanovic urges Fulham to fight for playoffs despite Blackburn setback

Slavisa Jokanovic admitted his frustration after Fulham missed out on a win against Blackburn which would have sent them into the Championship playoff places on Tuesday.

Sone Aluko put Fulham ahead with a first time shot immediately before the break but Blackburn responded well in the second half to earn a 2-2 draw at Craven Cottage.

Craig Conway equalised from the penalty spot in the 78th minute after Tomas Kalas had brought down Marvin Emnes, and Lucas Joao struck at the death after Gohi Cyriac had restored Fulham's lead.

Losing two points late on saw Fulham stay seventh in the table, and Jokanovic said: "It's frustrating but it's a part of the competition, we have scored many times in the last moments of games.

"In the first half we dominated and scored the goal. Second half we didn't dominate the game, we didn't control them and at the end we made some mistakes.

"And at the end we didn't stop the cross, they scored - and it's not easy to always score three goals to win the game.

"We didn't have enough experience to kill the game when we scored the second goal, we tried but then we gave them the chance to come back.

"We lost two points, we have one point more. There are nine games in front of us. You cannot be satisfied when you concede the goal but we lost a chance for now.

"We're going to fight to be in this top six at the beginning of May. We have to keep going and push hard."

Fulham defender Scott Malone believes they need to cut out conceding sloppy goals after Blackburn draw
The 25-year-old played 60 minutes in last night's 2-2 draw with Blackburn and he was left feeling frustrated after they conceded a last minute equaliser

Defensive frailty is still a concern for Fulham, but Scott Malone believes they can go on to win by two or three goals every game if they cut out conceding sloppy goals.

They were let down again by a defensive lapse of concentration last night against Blackburn, which this time presented itself in the form of a last minute Lucas Joao equaliser which dashed hopes of the side ending the night in the play-off places.

Slavisa Jokanovic's side looked good value in the first 45 minutes and got their rewards when Sone Aluko hit the back of the net, but Blackburn came out in the second half and pressed them higher up the pitch.

And that is something that Malone believes forced his side into a scrap which favoured the visitors.

He said: "First half we were in control like most games but in the second we came out a bit sloppy and they pressed us more than they did in the first.

"Our passing slowed down and they forced us into a scrap, it's the same really, conceding sloppy goals.

"It's frustrating especially when we know where we could've gone with a win, into the top six, but there's nine or ten games more and we're still unbeaten so we'll take it and forget about it now.

"We have momentum and we look like we can win games two or three if we stop conceding sloppy goals so it's still a positive."

Tottenham deem English starlet too expensive

Tottenham are giving up on Ryan Sessegnon

There's no question that Tottenham would like to add Ryan Sessegnon to their squad this summer. Unfortunately, the club are making it very clear that they won't be able to meet Fulham's valuation for the English starlet.

The first sign of Tottenham's acceptance of this reality was the signing of Ben Davies to a new contract. Sessegnon could eventually transition into a left winger, but his future likely will keep him as an offensive-minded left back. With Danny Rose firmly entrenched as the Spurs starter, there's only room for one other left back in the senior squad.

Davies isn't everyone's (or my) cup of tea, but Mauricio Pochettino clearly sees something in him. He lacks the dynamic athleticism that defines Rose's game, but he's a solid enough defender. I suppose Spurs could do worse than the heady Welshman.

Many believed Spurs would spend a lot of energy chasing him this summer. If the Davies contract wasn't enough proof they won't, the latest news regarding Sessegnon's relationship with Fulham certainly will be.

English sources claim that he's signed a pre-contract agreement with his current club. The only party that will benefit from that agreement are Fulham. Signing him to a professional contract as soon as he's eligible will provide them more leverage in transfer negotiations. Quite simply, it's going to drive the price for Sessegnon up considerably.

Tottenham might have been interested in the English starlet for a transfer fee of somewhere around £20 million. Now, it seems the price could easily skyrocket. I wouldn't be at all surprised if his ultimate sale price ends up close to double that amount. That may seem crazy to you, but remember, you're paying for a young, English talent. That, combined with the lack of quality left backs available in the transfer market, will make Sessegnon a hot property.

Instead of making a bold swoop for Sessegnon, Tottenham will stand pat at left back this summer. Spurs will be content to move forward with the tandem of Danny Rose and Ben Davies for the foreseeable f

U23s Fixture Update

This competition is a one leg knock out, and therefore if the teams are level after 90 minute, the game will go to extra time followed by pentalites.

Ryan Sessegnon to snub Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur for Fulham stay?

Ryan Sessegnon has reportedly decided to sign a pre-contract agreement with Fulham, despite Premier League heavyweights Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur showing interest.

The left-back has impressed at Craven Cottage this season, starting 13 Championship matches and coming off the bench in six more.

The 16-year-old, who joined the London outfit's youth system in 2008, has found the back of the net six times in all competitions and has also registered two assists in the league.

According to Football Insider, Sessegnon intends to continue his development at Fulham by signing a pre-contract agreement ahead of his 17th birthday, when he will be allowed to pen a professional deal.

It was thought that Liverpool and Spurs were mulling over £10m bids for the English youngster.

Gordan Strachan praises Fulham's Tom Cairney ahead of his first call-up to Scotland squad
The 26-year-old was called up to the senior squad last week and Scotland boss Strachan had some good things to say about the Fulham man

Gordon Strachan has praised Fulham's Tom Cairney ahead of his first call-up to the senior Scotland squad next weekend.

The 26-year-old was called up the squad for the first time for their friendly against Canada at Easter Road on March 22 and their World Cup qualifier against Slovenia on March 26 at Hampden Park.

Cairney has previously represented Scotland at U19 and U21 level, making his debut at U21 level against Sweden and going on to play six times.

Scotland currently sit in fifth position in Group F having won once, drawn once and lost twice, six points off England who top the table.

Speaking about Cairney, Strachan said: "Tom Cairney was the best man on the pitch at St James' Park, but that was no surprise, he has been the best man on the pitch on many occasions."

Chris Martin has also been called up to the Scotland squad for the two games.

Slavisa Jokanovic delivers harsh criticism of his Fulham side

Slavisa Jokanovic believes his Fulham side showed a lack of experience last night, as they failed to hold onto a lead against Blackburn Rovers, eventually drawing 2-2 at Craven Cottage, reports the London Evening Standard.

After Saturday's impressive 3-1 victory over Newcastle, Fulham were looking to take advantage of their game in hand, and break into the Sky Bet Championship Play-Off zone last night.

It looked like Gohi Cyriac had won the game for Jokanovic's side, when he scored in the 86th minute to put Fulham 2-1 ahead, but Lucas Joao's 94th minute equaliser snatched a vital three-points away from the Cottagers.

Speaking to the Evening Standard, Jokanovic was critical of his side, but urged them to continue their fight for the top-six, he said: "We didn't have enough experience to kill the game when we scored the second goal, we tried but then we gave them the chance to come back.

"We lost two points, we have one point more. There are nine games in front of us. You cannot be satisfied when you concede the goal but we lost a chance for now.

"We're going to fight to be in this top six at the beginning of May. We have to keep going and push hard."

Fulham are now just one-point adrift of Sheffield Wednesday, but know victory over Wolves on Saturday will see the move into the Play-Offs, due to Wednesday facing fifth placed Reading on Friday evening- where one of the two sides directly above the Cottagers will drop points.

Despite last night's result, Fulham's Play-Off hopes remain in their own hands as they still have to face Wednesday between now and the end of the season.

Burton Albion looking to snap up Fulham loanee on permanent deal

Championship outfit Burton Albion are reportedly looking to bring in Fulham loanee Cauley Woodrow on a permanent basis for next season, according to The Sun's sport pages.

The 22-year-old striker was seen as one of the Football League's hottest prospects when he joined The Whites from Luton Town in 2011, but his development hasn't gone to plan since arriving at Craven Cottage.

8 goals in 54 appearances for Fulham has been a disappointing turnout for the youngster, who was seen as possibly the next big striker at Fulham since Clint Dempsey left the London club in 2012.

A loan spell at Southend United, then in League 2, was similarly disappointing. In 19 games Woodrow netted just 2 times, and struck fears about his development.

However, since joining Championship new boys Burton Albion on loan in January he has rejuvenated his career. 3 goals in 8 games doesn't sound amazing, but his goals have lifted the Brewers away from the relegation zone into 18th place and sparked a 6 game unbeaten run.

Woodrow's goal earned The Brewers a 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest, and a 94th minute debut goal saw them beat relegation strugglers Wolves 2-1.

His excellent form has Burton thinking about his future at the club beyond the summer. With a club record £750,000 fee reportedly on the table, Fulham may be willing to let the former England youth international leave the club permanently.

With Fulham on the cusp of the Play-Off places, it's unlikely Woodrow will be able to compete with the likes of Chris Martin and Sone Aluko for a starting spot should he return, so it wouldn't be a surprise to see him depart Craven Cottage.

'This highlights the problems with our style of football' – Sheffield Wednesday fans react to latest shock

Our Sheffield Wednesday fans here in the Transfer Tavern hit the roof last night as Fulham threw away a certain win in the last minutes of the game against Blackburn.

Indeed, the Whites lost the game in rather shocking circumstances as Lucas Joao hit the equaliser for Rovers deep into stoppage time in the second half.

Added to that, the Cottagers had only just regained the lead less than ten minutes earlier as they looked to continue their surge to the play-offs and so, whilst they'll be disappointed, many have breathed a sigh of relief.

Indeed, the likes of our Sheffield Wednesday punters were certainly puffing their cheeks out at the end of the game in celebration with them very close to dropping out of the top six at the moment.

And, with Joao the winner as a man on loan at Blackburn from Wednesday, he was naturally the target for much of the jubilation.

Aluko: Still Confident

Sone Aluko may be disappointed with the 2-2 draw with Blackburn Rovers but he insists the club are still in the hunt for the top six and confidence is high.

The striker assisted Ryan Sessegnon for both his goals against Newcastle on Saturday and then opened the scoring himself against Blackburn on Tuesday night.

Rovers replied from the penalty spot through Craig Conway before Cyriac got his first goal for Fulham however Lucas Joao then scored in stoppage time to make it 2-2.

"It is a tough one to take, a very tough one to take because I thought we should have won the game," said Aluko.

"We dominated most of the game, then we gave away their first goal, which was poor, and then we got ourselves back in the game and we just had to see it out but we didn't manage the game well at all and it has happened a few times so we will be annoyed in the changing room after that."

The manner of the result was frustrating for all to take but it should not deflect from the fact that Fulham remain unbeaten in their last eight league games.

"I still think we played well today but just again it was the management at the end of the game. I think we let a bit of the pressure get to us and we were deep, I think that's why we gave the goal away because we were too deep.

"Overall we played well, we dominated the game, we did well to get back into the game and gave away a sloppy goal which happens in football.

"At the end of the day you've got to just take it on the chin, confidence is still high, four points from our last two games is not terrible, it's not drastic so we will go again and we are still confident that we will make the Play-Offs.

"Every game in this league is tough, there's not been a game that I would say is harder than another other, they are all challenges in their own ways.

"I would say Blackburn today, they needed the points as much as we needed the points, their new manager has given them a boost, a new way of playing and they were organised and had a lot of belief and didn't get robbed.

"It was a tough game right to the end and we were disappointed that we didn't manage the game," he said.

Aluko's personal form has coincided with the team's recent success but the forward maintains that he is simply doing the job that is required of him.

"That's why I'm in the team, to create goals and to score and at this stage of the season, in the business end, I'm very focussed on being efficient for the team and make sure I create chances and take my chances.

"All in all I am trying to help the team but we need results at the end of the day, that's all that matters at this stage of the season."

Fulham welcome Wolves on Saturday with a win guaranteeing a place in the top six and the team will be looking to put on a performance for Primary Schools Day at the Cottage.

Aluko however is cautious not to get burned twice in a week by another side fighting to maintain their Championship status.

"All the teams down there are scrapping for their lives, it always happens every season, they start turning it around at the end.

"Teams start getting desperate, they start taking more risks, throwing more people forward and you get rewards for that, so we have got to be wary of them and we will have a game-plan for them which we will try and execute as well.

"At the end of the day, we would've taken it a few weeks ago to be where we are now.

"We are disappointed now because of how hard we have worked and how well we have done to get in this situation.

"Obviously beating Newcastle away and then coming home against a team fighting at the bottom we fancied ourselves and we are disappointed but we will go again."

Ex-Manchester United youngster Ryan Tunnicliffe wanted by host of Championship clubs as Fulham prepare to release midfielder on free

Ryan Tunnicliffe is currently on loan at Wigan Athletic from Fulham
Midfielder has struggled for games and Fulham are willing to release him
A clutch of Championship clubs, plus Rangers, have shown an interest
Tunnicliffe was part of the Manchester United Youth Cup-winning team in 2011

A host of Championship clubs are interested in signing Ryan Tunnicliffe, currently on loan at Wigan Athletic.

The 24-year-old is out of contract at Fulham this summer and available on a free transfer.

Bought from Manchester United for £1.2million back in January 2014, Tunnicliffe was part of the same FA Youth Cup winning side as Paul Pogba, Ravel Morrison and Jesse Lingard in 2011 and won the club's Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award.

Reading, Huddersfield, Brentford, QPR, Ipswich, Cardiff and Nottingham Forest have all shown an interest while Wigan will also consider making his loan move permanent.

Tunnicliffe, who has also been considered by Rangers in the Scottish Premiership, has over 150 Championship games under his belt and can play across the midfield.

Fulham midfielder in demand this summer

A host of Championship clubs are interested in signing Fulham midfielder Ryan Tunnicliffe, currently on loan at Wigan Athletic.

The 24-year-old ex-Manchester United starlet is out of contract this summer and available on a free transfer. A former winner of United's Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award, Fulham paid £1.2million for him back in January 2014 when they were a Premier League club. Queens Park Rangers, Reading, Huddersfield, Brentford, Ipswich, Cardiff and Nottingham Forest have all shown an interest while Wigan will also consider making his loan move permanent. There has also been interest in Tunnicliffe, who has been on loan at Ipswich in the past, from Scottish Premiership club Rangers, according to The Daily Mail.

Huddersfield, Nottingham Forest and Reading line up move for Fulham midfielder

Huddersfield Town, Nottingham Forest and Reading are lining up a move to sign Fulham's Ryan Tunnicliffe according to a report from the Daily Mail.

The 24-year-old midfielder joined Wigan Athletic on loan in the January transfer window and it turns out that move meant that he played his last bit of football for parent club Fulham. They have already decided that he is surplus to requirements and when his contract expires at the end of the season, he will be allowed to leave and become a free agent.

But even with his spell at Fulham not working out, there are plenty of Sky Bet Championship sides lining up to try and snap him up when his contract ends in just a few months time. Not only is the team he currently play for, Wigan, want to sign him but a number of other clubs want to as well. Huddersfield, Nottingham Forest and Reading are leading the race to sign Tunnicliffe while Brentford, Cardiff City, Ipswich Town and QPR are also interested in signing him.

The reason that many teams want to sign Tunnicliffe even though he couldn't get into the Fulham first team is due to his pedigree. He came through the Manchester United academy and played alongside the likes of Jesse Lingard, Ravel Morrison and Paul Pogba when they won the Youth Cup in 2011, though his career hasn't gone as well as some of those. But at least Tunnicliffe will have plenty of options when he becomes a free agent in the summer.

Spurs might have missed out on Fulham wonderkid

When Tottenham were linked with Ryan Sessegnon at the beginning of the season, many had little or no knowledge of the 16-year-old who had been impressing for Fulham's academy side.

Much has changes since then. Sessegnon scored his sixth goal of the season at Newcastle last weekend — pretty good for a left-back — and is now being linked with the country's biggest clubs.

The fee mentioned back in August was £3 million, and there is still a chance of a cut-price deal while Sessegnon is on a youth contract.

But that might not be the case for too much longer. According to Football Insider, the defender has signed a pre-contract agreement with Fulham, which means he will turn professional on his 17th birthday in May.

That doesn't mean Fulham will be able to keep him without a fight; it simply means they will be able demand far more money.

Mauricio Pochettino has an excellent track record with young players, and the club will use that as an incentive to persuade Sessegnon to join Spurs.

But with the pre-contract agreement reportedly signed, there's a good chance Tottenham will be out-priced, potentially allowing a rival to swoop.

Spurs aren't exactly lacking depth at left-back, but it would be huge statement of intent if the club managed to snap up one of the country's most promising young talents.

With the battle for the top six hotting up, can Leeds retain their play-off place

Fulham's 2-2 draw against Blackburn last night was a great result for Leeds United in their bid to remain in the play-off's. A 94th minute equaliser from Rovers' Lucas João cancelled out what looked like a winner from Gohi Cyriac to ensure Fulham remained just outside the play-off places.

With just 9 games to go Leeds sit nicely in 4th on 66 points, 5 clear of Fulham in 7th. The whites have some tough fixtures remaining including a home tie against Brighton and an away trip to Newcastle and it is vital that they continue to pick up points and don't burst under pressure.

I think that the top nine teams will remain in the top nine and the two who currently sit in first and second (Newcastle and Brighton) will remain in their respective positions until the end. This leaves 7 teams fighting it out for four play-off places. There's still plenty to play for, and a lot of the top nine still have each other to play; Leeds themselves have five out of nine fixtures against teams around them.

I've had a go at predicting the results for the top nine's remaining fixtures, although this is probably far from how the majority of games will pan out.

If results go that way, the final league table will look like this:

I'd be very happy if we finished the season in 4th place. I think facing Fulham in the play-off's would be a very tough task especially considering how well they've played against us in the league this year. It would mark a massive step up from previous seasons and just shows how well Garry Monk, his coaching staff and his players have done.

Bye Bye! The 2 most likely players to quit Fulham this summer

A last gasp equaliser from Blackburn Rovers saw Slavisa Jokanovic's Fulham side remain seventh in the Championship, after missing the opportunity to break into the play-off places at the expense of Sheffield Wednesday.

Despite the disappointment of missing the chance to break into the play-off places, Fulham has proved over the course of the season that they have the momentum and quality to break into the top six.

Heavy victories over the likes of Newcastle United and Huddersfield Town have shown that if Fulham can break into the play-offs, they could be a force to be reckoned with.

One of the main reasons for Fulham's success this season has been Slavisa Jokanovic, which combined with astute recruitment has created a tight-knit squad capable of competing at the top end of the Championship.

A general improvement in the quality of the squad has seen some players drift to the margins of the starting XI, whereas others have had to leave the club on loan in search of regular first-team football.

In the summer, Slavisa Jokanovic may look to continue Fulham's progression by bringing in new personnel, to do so, he may have to free up some space by allowing some players to leave.

FLW writer Elliott Wheat-Bowen looks at the TWO most likely players to quit Fulham this summer....

Ryan Tunnicliffe

When Ryan Tunnicliffe joined Fulham from Manchester United, the highly rated Manchester United academy graduate may have been hoping to have a big role to play at Fulham.

Instead, the 24-year-old midfielder had to spent loan spells at Blackburn Rovers and Wigan Athletic, in order to play regular first team football.

This season, the versatile midfielder has made seven appearances for Fulham in the Championship as Slavisa Jokanovic deployed him in a number of different roles.

However, after falling out of favour and not featuring in twelve consecutive matchday squads, Tunnicliffe was loaned out to Wigan Athletic for his second stint at the North West club.

As Ryan Tunnicliffe has fallen down the pecking order at Fulham, the 24-year-old central midfielder may be one of the most likely players to quit Fulham in the summer, as he searches for regular first-team action on a permanent basis.

Jozabed Sanchez

After joining Fulham from Rayo Vallecano for a fee well over £3 million, Jozabed Sanchez was expected to be a star for Fulham this season.

Sanchez was one of eleven players to join Fulham in the summer as Slavisa Jokanovic looked to build a side capable of competing at the top of the Championship.

As Fulham remain in contention for a playoff place, Slavisa Jokanovic's shake up has been successful. However, Jozabed Sanchez has not been a part of it.

The 26-year-old Spaniard only made seven appearances in the Championship for Fulham, six of which were as a substitute.

Having not featured in a Fulham squad since mid-October, the Spanish midfielder was offered an escape in the January transfer window, when Spanish side Celta Vigo enquired about bringing the Spaniard back to Spain on loan.

With Slavisa Jokanovic allowing Jozabed Sanchez to return to Spain, the former Rayo Vallecano midfielder is one of the most likely players to leave Fulham in the summer if the substantial fee that was paid can be recouped.

Newcastle Must Spend £20-million On This Fulham Midfielder And It Would Be Totally Worth It

Newcastle Must Spend On Tom Cairney In The Summer Without A Doubt

Newcastle United crashed to a fifth home defeat of the season, as they were thoroughly outplayed by Fulham, eventually condemning the Magpies to a 3-1 defeat. There was one man who was the chief architect of the Cottagers' brilliant performance and he goes by the name Tom Cairney.

Cairney has been brilliant for Fulham and Newcastle must spend on him in the summer.

Days after sending the fans into a tizzy with a 96th-minute equaliser with a marvellous strike against Leeds, Cairney was once again at it, this time at St. James' Park. Picking up the ball from 30-yards out, Cairney carried the ball for five meters, before lashing out a left-footed strike that rose in the air before dipping viciously and ending into the back of the net beating Karl Darlow.

That moment alone gave an indication as to why Fulham rate the playmaker so highly and value him at £20-million. It was reported earlier in January that, Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez made an enquiry for Cairney, only to baulk at the sight of the price quoted by the Cottagers.  £20-million would be a record-breaking fee for the English second tier. The fee is something that Newcastle would not entertain paying – especially after Mike Ashley decided to tighten the purse strings. Since then, the 26-year old has driven Fulham's late charge towards a playoff position.

Yet if there was any clear justification as to why any team must shell out £20-million on the midfielder, who hasn't played a single Premier League game since 2010, his performance against Magpies was it. Apart from what was another contender for the Goal of the Month, Cairney ran the show from the middle of the park for Fulham, constantly threading through balls one after the other for the dynamic front three of Sone Aluko, Ryan Sessegnon and Neeskens Kabano.

Cairney then went on to dictate the play in the second-half with such composure and poise, picking off the home team with some excellent passes through their defence. The 26-year old completely outshone his Newcastle counterpart  Jonjo Shelvey, who is his closest competitor for the best central midfielder in the Championship.

The Stunning Stats That Newcastle Must Look At

The sublime strike against Newcastle was Cairney's ninth goal of the season in the Championship, from 34 appearances, along with 9 assists to his name as well. He has been absolutely brilliant in the centre of the pitch for the Cottagers.

The fact that he has played 2639 passes from the deep midfield position – highest in the Championship, and at a mind-blowing accuracy of 92%, demonstrates how he pulls the strings sitting in the midfield. It must also be noted that the average pass length that Cairney has attempted this season is 16m, indicating that it is not just simple side passes, but it is usually the long diagonals and the defence-splitting through balls that he attempts, in order to release the forwards in behind the opposition defence.

The 26-year old also has played 86 key passes this season, once again the best in the Championship and has won an amazing 77% of his 69 take-on attempts.

At 26 years of age, Cairney is yet to reach his peak and judging by what he has been dishing out in the Championship, Newcastle could do with that drive and creativity in the midfield, especially in the Premier League next season. The price that Fulham are quoting might seem a little steep, but on the evidence of Saturday's enchanting Man-of-the-Match performance, the investment seems worthy enough.

Fulham defender Scott Malone thinks teams fighting for their lives find extra energy ahead of Wolves tie
Wolves visit Craven Cottage four points above the drop zone thanks to victory over Brentford in midweek and Malone is expecting another tough test

Scott Malone in action for Fulham

Fulham welcome Wolves to Craven Cottage on Saturday and Scott Malone reckons teams around the bottom find extra energy when they know their Championship lives are on the line.

Blackburn clawed their way out of the bottom three thanks to a point at the Cottage on Tuesday night in a game where they pressured Fulham high up the pitch, bagging a point courtesy of a last minute equaliser.

Wolves come to west London four points off the drop zone thanks to a win at Brentford in midweek and will be looking to put more breathing space between them and the bottom of the table with another three points.

Fulham will be looking to get into the play-offs again, and Malone believes teams that are languishing at the bottom are harder to play against than teams that are flying.

He said: "Wolves will be be similar to Blackburn, they'll be boisterous, in our faces and strong from back to front and I think we've struggled with that through the season.

"I think the last time I said that thought we went and won the next game at home so hopefully we'll do the same.

"Teams coming here now, like Blackburn and Wolves who are near the bottom, they're scrapping and seem they to find some extra energy from somewhere knowing they could go down.

"I think Wolves have gone clear now and the teams at the bottom this season are always hard but we have the quality to go and win the game so that's what we're going to do.

"I wouldn't say it's easier to play the better teams, but the teams at the bottom come with a bit more hunger because they have something to work towards, teams at the top are more confident but complacency can creep in so I'd say teams at the bottom are harder to play against."

Ryan Sessegnon would be better off signing for Newcastle than Tottenham

Fulham ace Ryan Sessegnon has been linked to Tottenham but the side he scored against last weekend, Newcastle, should be paying attention.

If Newcastle were not aware of Ryan Sessegnon before last weekend they will be now.

The teenager scored twice to earn Fulham a shock 3-1 win at St James' Park, putting his side in contention to land a play-off spot, a result they could not build on against Blackburn in midweek.

Sessegnon is just 16, and has had no trouble at all adapting to the rigours of Championship football.

He has been strongly linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur, with The Mail reporting last month they were confident they could do a deal.

But if Sessegnon wants to continue his progress, he should avoid a move to Spurs, otherwise he will face an extended spell on the sidelines.

Spurs have the excellent Danny Rose as their first choice left-back, and the England international recently signed a new contract.

Ben Davies has been making improvements as his back up this season, and he too signed a contract last week. His ability t poo and play as part of a back three makes Mauricio Pochettino even more likely to hold onto him.

Sessegnon would find himself in a similar situation as DeAndre Yedlin did at Tottenham. He was signed and then sent out on loan twice, because he had Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier in front of him.

Going back to paying under-23 football at this point would be a waste of time for him, Sessegnon needs to play.

A better move would be a switch to Newcastle, who appear destined to return to the Premier League next season.

Newcastle's starting left-back at the weekend was the uninspiring Paul Dummett, and Sessegnon possesses an upside he simply doesn't have.

Getting the opportunity to work under Champions League winner and former Real Madrid boss Rafa Benitez is also surely another attraction.

Sessegnon on one side and Yedlin in the other full-back spot would be an exciting combination, and if Fulham do not land promotion themselves, the youngster should consider a move to Newcastle if an offer comes in.
