Confirmed: LFC want six-goal left-back, but deal is not yet done

Yesterday, football.London reported that Liverpool had all but won the race for the signature for Fulham's wonderkid defender Ryan Sessegnon – beating Arsenal and Chelsea in the process.

The 16-year-old has been incredible in the Championship this term, registering four goals in the league and two in the FA Cup.

For a 16-year-old striker this would be impressive, but for a left-back, it's incredible.

However, the reliable James Pearce of the Echo has stated that while we re 'considering a swoop,' a deal isn't finalised.

Last summer, we went for Leicester's teenager Ben Chilwell in the same position, so it's clear Jurgen Klopp is desperate for a teenager to develop and grow into this role.

Pearce's report states Alberto Moreno is likely to move on, with the Spaniard only getting two Premier League starts all season.

James Milner is likely to stay, but we can't imagine Sessegnon would be challenging for his position immediately.

It's more likely that if we were to buy him, we'd send him back to Fulham. If he's starting for them already, it's the best place for him to develop.

Who is Liverpool target Ryan Sessegnon?
The Reds are interested in Fulham's highly-rated teenager - and here's the lowdown on the left-back

Age?

16. Born 18 May 2000.

Club?

Fulham.

Appearances?

23 in all competitions.

Goals?

Six.

International caps?

Sessegnon has been capped at England U16, U17 and U19 level.

Trivia?

Sessegnon is the first professional footballer born in the 21st century to score a goal in England's top four leagues. He is also the Championship's youngest scorer

Style of play?

Sessegnon is quick, powerful and direct. He has played as a winger in Fulham's youth teams, so it's no surprise that he likes to get forward and score goals. He will need plenty of work on his defensive play, but at 16 there is plenty of time for him to improve.

What has been said about him?

"It's 99% certain he will be one of the top left-backs in the world" - Fulham team-mate Stefan Johansen.

"He is only 16 years old but 100% this player is going to be at the highest level soon"- Fulham manager Slavisa Jokanovic.

Anyone else interested?

You'd be better off asking who isn't interested. Sessegnon's displays have reportedly caught the eye of all the top Premier League clubs, as well as the likes of RB Leipzig and even German giants Bayern Munich. Oh, and Everton.

Can I see him in action?

Funny you should mention that...

Force Of Nature

Kevin McDonald was at Cheltenham Festival on Wednesday. As the Sky Bet Championship season enters the home straight, he's certain Fulham can make the jump into the top six.

"We fell a little bit short on Tuesday night against Blackburn and it wasn't the best of results," he tells Saturday's matchday programme for the visit of his former side Wolverhampton Wanderers. "But it's one of those things, when you have a bad result, you have to pick yourself up and go again.

"To concede in the last minute of injury time was very frustrating and we need to be more resolute and stronger in that area. But we'll put it behind us and move on."

To read the full interview with McDonald, pick up a programme on Saturday.

Sone Aluko confident Fulham can bounce back after Blackburn draw

Sone Aluko is confident Fulham can bounce back from their hiccup against Blackburn when they play Wolves at Craven Cottage on Saturday.

Gohi Cyriac had restored the hosts' lead just four minutes from time, after earlier goals from Aluko and Craig Conway, only for Lucas Joao to sweep home in the 94th minute.

Fulham subsequently missed the chance to move into the Championship play-off places, sitting one point behind sixth-placed Sheffield Wednesday.

Aluko now wants Fulham to respond to that disappointment when they play Wolves.

"You have got to just take it on the chin," he said.

"Confidence is still high and four points from our last two games is not terrible. It is not drastic so we will go again and we are still confident that we will make the play-offs.

"We would have taken it a few weeks ago.

Aluko expects a difficult test against Wolves, who are fighting for survival but have recorded back-to-back wins over Rotherham and Brentford.

He continued: "All the teams down there are scrapping for their lives," he said. "So we have got to be wary."

Jokanović's Wolves Preview

Slaviša Jokanović is not anticipating another 4-4 draw when Fulham entertain Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday afternoon.

The clichéd game of two halves saw the spoils shared at Molineux earlier in the season, and the Whites Head Coach believes his team can use what they learnt in that game.

"I expect something different," he said in his pre-match press conference. "We played very well in the first 45 minutes and scored the goals.

"The second half we made some mistakes, they pressed us high and hard and were very strong at the end. They scored three goals in the second half and we equalised in the last moment of the game.

"I expect something a little bit different, I don't expect this kind of result, but this experience when we played against them will serve us in preparing for this game that is in front of us.

"Wolves are in a relegation battle. The last few games they are in a good level of form. They won their last game against Brentford.

"It's an aggressive team, it's a team that competes very well, it's a very fast attacking side, and it's another tough game in front of us.

"We are in our battle, we need the points, and we're going to try and find our best performance to win the points."

Fulham go into the fixture knowing that victory would propel them into the Play-Off spots, as fifth and sixth-placed Reading and Sheffield Wednesday do battle on Friday evening.

When asked how much attention he'll pay to that encounter, Jokanović replied: "This is not under our control. I would prefer both teams lost the game but it's impossible.

"We have to concentrate on our job. In front of us are the last nine games. We have to be focused and try and win as many points as possible.

"We prefer to think about our job step by step and win the points that are in front of us. I cannot predict right now what is going to happen by the 7th of May, but we are going to know soon.

"At the end we can be in the position for the last game that we play against Sheffield Wednesday to win the game and still be in the top-six. That's what we are looking for, and we are fighting for this kind of the chance."

Fulham go into the meeting with Wolves unbeaten in the last eight Sky Bet Championship outings, although it could have been better had an impressive Blackburn Rovers outfit not taken a point from the Cottage in midweek.

"We showed our winning mentality many times," Jokanović stated. "I am not depressive, I encourage my team to show desire. I believe we showed our crowd enough desire, and we're going to show more still.

"We paid a very expensive price for one mistake on Tuesday. Blackburn played a very good football game and probably deserved to score before they did.

"I don't want to look backwards, we have learnt our lesson very well, and now we are looking forward and trying to be in a better level than the last game."

Scott Parker and Lucas Piazon remain sidelined for our final match before the international break, but there was positive news regarding Floyd Ayité, with his boss commenting: "Floyd has started working with us and is going to be available for tomorrow's game."

Ticket's for the game are still available to purchase on General Sale, priced from £25 for adults and £15 for juniors.

UNDER-23s: CITY 5-5 FULHAM (3-2 PENS)

Young Canaries progress into quarter-final after ten-goal thriller

NORWICH City's Under-23s progressed into the Premier League Cup quarter-final with a dramatic penalty shoot-out win over Fulham at Colney Training Centre on Friday.

The two sides couldn't be separated during a remarkable 120 minutes, sharing ten goals in total; four of those coming after the regulation 90 in a pulsating contest.

City had to recover from an early set-back when Adetayo Edun and Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson struck for Fulham, but they turned the game around courtesy of a sublime first half hat-trick from Louis McIntosh.

All three of McIntosh's strikes were taken superbly with expert finishing inside the box, although a 69th minute header from Mattias Kait sent the match into extra-time.

There, the Canaries soon found themselves with work to do again, falling behind once more when Cottagers substitute Josh Walker swiveled neatly before finding the top-corner.

The hosts' reaction was almost immediate however, getting back on the front foot to haul themselves level within a minute through Ebou Adams' ferocious finish.

Adams was then adjudged to have brought down Thorsteinsson in the box on 112 minutes, with George Williams stepping up to make it 5-4 from the spot and deliver another hammer blow to the home side.

If City were disheartened by that, they didn't show it, digging deep yet again to incredibly net a tenth goal which sent the game to spot-kicks when Anthony Spyrou pounced from close-range with just three minutes remaining.

Fulham's Williams and Joe Crowe traded successful penalties, before Aston Oxborough - having produced a number of important stops across the afternoon - smothered Josh Walker's low strike.

Louis Ramsay stepped up next but sent over the bar, ahead of Josh Smile and Conor McGrandles both finding the net for their respective sides to make it 2-2 after three penalties apiece.

Oxborough produced another fine stop to deny Elijah Adebayo, handing his team a potential advantage which was taken with both hands by the clinical McIntosh as he netted confidently.

That left Fulham's Foday Nabay needing to score, but the midfielder crashed his effort away off the crossbar, ensuring it would be City who took their place in the last eight of the competition.

FULL-TIME: Norwich City 5-5 Fulham (AET)

GOALS: Canaries: Louis McIntosh (21, 39, 43), Ebou Adams (95), Anthony Spyrou (117). Cottagers: Adetayo Edun (7), Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson (19), Mattias Kait (69), Josh Walker (94), George Williams (112, pen.)

NORWICH CITY: Oxborough; Ramsay, Efete (c), Crowe, Lewis; McGrandles; Jaiyesimi (Aarons, 84), Cantwell (Spyrou, 96), Adams; McIntosh, Ashley-Seal. Subs not used: Hallett, (GK), Wallis.

Adeniran has been replaced in the squad by  Ipswich Town teenage sensation Tristan Nydam, who has Zimbabwean blood flowing in his veins.

The 18-year-old was among three players of Nigerian descent that initially made the roster announced on Thursday, the others being Tolaji Bola (Arsenal) and Tariq Uwakwe (Chelsea).

Eleven players of Nigerian descent are expected to represent the England squads during the international break, including Three Lions pair Dele Alli and Ross Barkley.

The England U18s will tackle Qatar on March 22 and March 24 before their final international friendly against Saudi Arabia three days later.

REVEALED: The reasons why Arsenal decided not to sign Liverpool-bound Ryan Sessegnon last summer
The Fulham teenager looks set to seal a multi-million pound move to Anfield this summer - but he could have joined Arsenal far for less money last year

Ryan Sessegnon has been one of the most talked about young prospects in English football since breaking into the Fulham team earlier this season.

The left-back made his senior debut for the Cottagers in August, aged just 16 years and 81 days - since then he has never looked back.

Sessegnon has gone on to make 23 appearances this season in all competitions, scoring six goals - including two last weekend in the 3-1 win at Newcastle.

His performances have seen England's top club's queuing up for his signature, with Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool all interested.

Arsenal pushed hard for him last summer, but didn't get the deal done and football.london exclusively broke the news on Thursday that Liverpool now look set to wrap up a multi-million pound move for the 16-year-old in the summer.

So why did the Gunners fail to land the teenager last year before he had made such a name for himself? We take a look at the background behind the pursuit.

How interested were Arsenal?

Very. The Gunners knew all about Sessegnon and had seen him several times when he had played for Fulham against various Arsenal youth teams over the years.

His talents were clear. He had all the attributes Arsene Wenger looks for in a young defender - pace, athletic ability and a willingness to get forward to support the attack.

Arsenal watched him regularly and they stepped up their efforts last February when Sessegnon was called up to represent England U16s at the UEFA Under-16 Development Tournament.

The four-team event was staged at St George's Park and club's who had players involved were allowed to send a representative to go and watch.

Arsenal sent chief scout Steve Rowley to run the rule over Sessegnon as they pondered whether to make an official offer for the defender.

Rowley watched all three England games, against Italy, Czech Republic and Norway - with Sessegnon starting two of the three matches.

Arsenal's chief scout returned to north London impressed with what he had seen from the Fulham youngster.

So why didn't Arsenal push through a deal?

Simple, because of the potential price tag.

Sessegnon has yet to sign a professional contract at Fulham, he can't until he turns 17, but he had been offered scholarship forms which means should he have decided to leave in the summer of 2016, the case would have gone to tribunal.

And given the fact Sessegnon was at a Category 1 academy, was known to be one of the best players in his age group in the country and had represented England - the fee that any buying club would have had to pay would be huge in context with other players of his age.

For example, Arsenal signed Danny Crowley from Aston Villa in 2013 when he was 15, but at the time he had not signed a scholarship with the Midlands club.

So the deal did not have to go to a tribunal, Arsenal had to spend a set fee of £209,000 under the Elite Player Performance Plan compensation scheme.

But with Sessegnon the compensation would have been far higher, a seven figure sum. Given he had yet to make a senior appearance at that time paying such a hefty price for a teenager was considered to be a big risk by the north London club, one they decided not to take.

A source told football.london that realistically only Chelsea or Manchester City would pay such a figure for a teenager at that stage of his development.

Why have Liverpool now moved to the front of the queue?

Arsenal have continued to watch Sessegnon this season - but their interest has cooled as his star has risen.

Having broken into the first-team in such style, he has now signed scholarship forms and a pre-contract with the west Londoners which commits him to signing a professional deal when he turns 17 in May.

Getting Sessegnon to put pen to paper on the pre-agreement means Fulham are now in a much stronger position when it comes to cashing in on the player.

They will be able to demand a multi-million pound fee in the summer, a figure that Arsenal would not be willing to meet.

The Gunners have also signed Cohen Bramall, who they plucked from non-league Hednesford Town for just £30,000.

The 20-year-old has already been fast-tracked into the Under-23s and the Gunners believe he has similar attributes to Sessegnon.

Will Derby fans appreciate the return of Chris Martin?

Chris Martin has enjoyed a successful career in the Championship after a chaotic start to his football career, but has had a mixed season with Fulham.

Signed by Derby County on a free transfer from Norwich City, following a loan spell at Pride Park, Martin scored 20 league goals in his full season for the Rams. His goals took the Rams to Wembley where they were cruelly denied a place in the Premier League by a dogged 10 man QPR side.

Derby have failed to reach the same heights but Martin has been a reliable scoring outlet for the Rams and his career statistics at the club reflect this. A total of 63 goals in 161 games is not an exceptional record by any stretch of the imagination but his role as the centre forward in the side was instrumental.

The 4-3-3 formation has been largely associated with Derby in previous campaigns and Martin's role as the focal point in attack was nothing short of pivotal. His team mates as well opposing players knew this equally.

After earning himself the title of being Derby's top goalscorer three seasons on the spin, his move to Championship rivals in a loan move on transfer deadline day in August came as a surprise to supporters.

Derby were managed by Nigel Pearson, an advocate of the traditional 4-4-2 formation and speculation on Martin's Derby future was fuelled by his visible discontent of playing in the new style of play in which Pearson was trying to implement at the club. The signs were there and the Derby faithful had become restless with the forward's general attitude and questioned his commitment towards the cause.

As Martin began to find his feet at Fulham and rekindle his goalscoring touch at Craven Cottage, Steve McClaren returned to Derby. Martin played his best football under McClaren and was keen on a reunion as Derby began their ascent towards the Championship play-offs.

In January, Martin signed a new deal with the Rams despite Fulham's option to buy him on a permanent deal in the summer. The fall out between the two clubs over this unusual scenario has been well documented. It is still not clear where Martin will be playing his club football next season.

Fulham remain adamant that they still have an option to buy Martin at the end of the season but will the Cottagers be willing to pay out a big transfer fee for a player that is arguably not fully committed to the cause? It looks likely that Martin will be back at Pride Park next season.

However with Fulham now in serious contention for promotion to the Premier League and Derby destined for Championship football, will Martin be as a keen as he was back in January to play for the Rams next campaign? And will the sacking of McClaren, in which Martin was clearly a crucial part of his plans, have any bearing on his willingness to return to his parent club under new boss Gary Rowett?

A lot of questions are yet to be answered and it will be interesting to see where all parties stand on this matter come the end of the season. If Martin is to return to Derby then supporters will be hoping to see a rejuvenated Chris Martin hungry to help fire the side into the Premier League. If he is to rediscover his best form in a Derby County shirt then Derby fans will be more than happy to have their number nine back leading the line.

Sheffield Wednesday 0-2 Reading: Royals take spoils in playoff six-pointer at Hillsborough
Japp Stam's side move five points clear of sixth-placed Wednesday and the Owls will drop out of the playoffs if Fulham avoid defeat against Wolves on Saturday

Yann Kermorgant's first-half winner slumped Sheffield Wednesday to a fourth loss in their last six games which leaves Reading - and Fulham - on course for the play-offs.

Wednesday could drop out of the top six if the in-form Cottagers avoid defeat against Wolves on Saturday.

And just to rub salt into their wounds, Adrian Popa scored a bizarre second deep in injury-time when he walked the ball in on the break after keeper Kieren Westwood had camped up field in search of an equaliser.

The Owls were on the back foot after just 13 minutes when French striker Kermorgant made the most of some shoddy defending.

John Swift's simple pass allowed Kermorgant to cut into the box from the right, fake out marker Morgan Fox and send a perfect, low finish into the far corner.

It was such a simple goal and one that put another big dent into Wednesday's promotion dream - while re-igniting Fulham's.

But it also finally sprung the Yorkshire side into life and 10 minutes later Fox was desperately unlucky with a left-foot blast from 18 yards which beat the diving Ali Al Habsi but struck the foot of his post and rebounded out of harm's way.

Seconds later Reading defender Tyler Blackett clattered into Jordan Rhodes practically inside the Wednesday technical area, sending the home bench into fury.

The fact the former Manchester United kid escaped with just a yellow card did not improve manager Carlos Carvalhal's mood.

And he would have been even more frustrated after 33 minutes when Reach snatched at a shot from Rhodes' strong header and then, a couple of minutes later, when Rhodes got his head to a deflected Reach shot but saw Al Habsi pull off a stunning save.

Rhodes continued to appear Wednesday's best hope of a route back into the game and Barry Bannan found him at a 68th minute corner, but the Scottish international's header lacked power and was scooped off the line by Al Habsi.

Owls sub Callum McManaman thought he had levelled on 76 minutes with a well-aimed shot but Liam Moore was on hand to clear off the line.

But Al Habsi was in inspired form in a frantic finale, pulling off an amazing double save to deny Will Buckley, keeping out a low McManaman drive then somehow stopping another Buckley header.

Fulham v Wolves: All you need to know ahead of the game
Guide to Saturday afternoon's fixture at Craven Cottage

Fulham take on Wolves as they look to keep pace with the top six sides in the league and hope other results enable them to sit in the play-off positions over the international break.

The Whites drew 2-2 on Tuesday with Blackburn Rovers after a late goal which stopped them breaking into the top six.

And Fulham will be out to make amends for those two dropped points when they take on Paul Lambert's side and take advantage of Reading and Sheffield Wednesday playing each other.

Ahead of the game, here's some key information.

When and where?
The game is at Craven Cottage and kicks off at 3pm.

Team news
Fulham: Scott Parker again misses out with a back injury, while Floyd Ayite is a doubt.

Wolves: Richard Stearman is ineligible for Saturday's game as he is on loan from Fulham while Ben Marshall could start after recovering from a dead leg.

Manager views
Slavisa Jokanovic: "I expect something different (to the 4-4 draw). We played very well in the first 45 minutes and scored the goals.

Paul Lambert: "It's important to go to Fulham and try to win - we will try to do the same as what we've been doing and try to win.

"We're up against probably the best footballing team in the league, in my opinion.

"We had a cracking game with them at Molineux in December. They're just outside the play-offs, they've been doing it for a few years, playing that way - it's a game that we're going to try and win, if we do what we've done the last couple of weeks then we'll have a good chance.

"They may be feeling a bit more anxious because they're playing at home, the expectancy level can be higher - all fans think that their team should be higher than they actually are.

"Fulham may be in that category, but as a football team, they're very good."

Fancy a flutter?

Links with clubs like Liverpool and Arsenal make Ryan Sessegnon work even harder, according to his Fulham boss
Teenager does not let talk about his future affect him on the training pitch, in fact, it just makes him better

Gaining attention: Ryan Sessegnon in action against Leeds United (Photo: Darren Pepe)

While many managers complain that speculation linking their star players with moves away harms their squad, Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic says it has the opposite effect on Ryan Sessegnon.

The 16-year-old has been the subject of plenty of talk since breaking into Fulham's first team this season, with the latest report from Football.London suggesting he's on his way to Liverpool.

Whether or not that is true remains to be seen, although it is clear that many top clubs are keeping a close eye on the teenager's development.

But it has no impact on Sessegnon in training, according to his boss, who says it just encourages him to keep working hard and improving.

When asked what impact it has on him, the Serb said: "He's better for it!

"It's because this kid shows a great thirst for learning and for working.

"I don't believe it's affected him, everything that is around him [in terms of transfer talk].

"It's positive news. It is not a factor. I believe all this news encourages him and makes him work harder."

The teenager's brace in the victory at Championship high-flyers Newcastle United last week further catapulted him into the public eye, and Jokanovic will be hoping he can produce a similar performance against Wolves.

Bristol City 4-0 Huddersfield Town

Bristol City had not won a game in which Tammy Abraham (right) had scored since 1 October

Tammy Abraham scored his 22nd goal of the season as struggling Bristol City stunned Huddersfield Town to dent the Terriers' automatic promotion hopes.

Lee Tomlin rounded Danny Ward to slot City ahead, after Town's Jonathan Hogg was taken off on a stretcher following a 14-minute stoppage.

Chelsea loanee Abraham made it 2-0 on the stroke of half-time, before Aden Flint superbly flicked in City's third.

David Cotterill's penalty, after Joe Bryan was fouled, sealed victory.

Lee Johnson's side, who had won only twice in 22 league matches prior to beating Wigan Athletic last Saturday, have now recorded back-to-back successes for the first time since 1 October and move up to 19th in the table.

Huddersfield had won eight of their previous 10 Championship games to keep up the pressure on the top two, but remain six points adrift of second-placed Brighton after coming up against a Bristol City side in inspired form.

David Wagner's team struggled to impose their familiar high-tempo, high-pressing game on the Robins, and never really recovered after Hogg had to be withdrawn in the first half following a clash with team-mate Mark Hudson.

The 28-year-old received lengthy treatment to his neck and back from both sets of medical staff before being stretchered off to applause from all four sides of Ashton Gate.

He was understood to be conscious and talking in the dressing room before being taken to hospital for a scan.

Tomlin's composed finish deservedly put City in front, and 19-year-old Abraham doubled the advantage after displaying brilliant movement and striker's instinct to stab home at the near post.

Centre-half Flint, who struck the winner at Wigan, made it 3-0 with a brilliant between-the-legs flick before Cotterill's penalty into the top corner lifted Lee Johnson's side back out of the relegation zone.

Fulham v Wolves: Whites fans call for change up front
The team Slavisa Jokanovic should put out, according to the fans

Fulham fans want to see Gohi Cyriac start after he scored his first goal for Fulham against Blackburn in midweek.

The Ivory Coast forward, on loan from KV Oostende, opened his account for the Whites and supporters want to see him lead the line, with Kevin McDonald making way.

That's the only change Whites fans want to see with David Button continuing to start in goal.

Ryan Fredericks, Tomas Kalas, Tim Ream and Scott Malone make up the back four.

Your team: Fulham v Wolves

Stefan Johansen, Tom Cairney and Neeskens Kebano have been selected in the middle with Sone Aluko and Ryan Sessegnon on the flanks with Cyriac up front.

Preferred Fulham team (4-3-3): Button, Fredericks, Kalas, Ream, Malone, Johansen, Cairney, Kebano, Aluko, Cyriac, Sessegnon.

Absurd.

McDonald is tactically far more important to the team - football teams should not be based on popularity. Kebano in a CM role? People are high as a kite.

Cyriac should be in instead of Martin.. Or Kebano, Aluko and Sessegnon should be rotated.
