Fulham 1-3 Wolves player ratings: Tom Cairney, Sone Aluko and Dennis Odoi the only ones to stand out on disappointing afternoon
Fulham miss out on the chance to move into the Championship play-off places

Fulham missed out on the chance to move into the Championship play-off places as they lost 3-1 at home to Wolves.

Ivan Cavaleiro, Andreas Weimann and Dave Edwards scored the goals, with substitute Dennis Odoi pulling one back for the hosts.

Here we take a look at how the players rated.

David Button - Could do nothing with any of the goals. Kicking generally good, made a couple of good saves. 6

Ryan Fredericks - To blame for the Wolves opener, getting the ball stuck in his feet and allowing Helder Costa to muscle him off it and lay the ball on a plate for Ivan Cavaleiro. Brought off soon after half-time and his replacement, Odoi, was much better. 5

Kevin McDonald - Hooked at half-time after a first half struggle. 5

Neeskens Kebano - Quiet game. Hardly noticed he was playing. 5

Tom Cairney - Always looking for the ball, always looking to then do something with it. A commanding presence, just did not come off for him. A class act, though. 7

Floyd Ayite - Lively down the left, put a number of telling balls into the box, but should have scored at 3-1 when he put his effort straight at Ikeme. 6

Tim Ream - Gave the ball away early on, and was given a few problems by Andreas Weimann in the first half. THen was too easily beaten by Helder Costa for Wolves' third. 5

Stefan Johansen - He tried, but he failed. Constantly looking for a ball over the Wolves defence or through the Wolves defence, but never came off. At least he tried though. 6

Sone Aluko - Was lively, but not a huge threat in the first half. But he came alive in the second, linking up well with Sessegnon and grabbed a fortuitous assist for the Odoi goal when Cyriac missed his pull-back. 7

Tomas Kalas - Turned a little too easily for the Weimann goal and did not look comfortable all game. 5

Ryan Sessegnon - One of the worst corners you're ever likely to see. The teenager did not reach the heights we have come to expect from him. 5

Subs:

Gohi Cyriac (on for McDonald HT) - Missed Aluko's pull back, but Odoi made up for it by scoring. Very quiet. 5

Dennis Odoi (on for Fredericks 52') - What an impact. A minute after coming on he rifled a shot from the edge of the box into the far corner to give Fulham hope. Not only that but he was a constant threat down the right. 7

Scott Malone - (on or Sessegnon 78') - No time to influence the game. N/A

Fulham beaten by Wolves as play-off chase stutters

Fulham 1 Wolves 3

Fulham missed another chance to hit the top six as they slipped to their first league defeat in nine games.

The Whites were way too ponderous during an uninspired first half and although they finally raised their game after going 2-0 down after the break, they ultimately left themselves with too much to do.

A point would have been enough to leapfrog Sheffield Wednesday into that coveted final play-off spot but – as in midweek against Blackburn – Fulham missed their cue.

Wolves, comfortable at the back for the most part, had even more reason to feel they could get something out of the game when they scored on the break after 34 minutes.

Danger man Helder Costa outmuscled a dithering Ryan Fredericks down Fulham's right flank and a simple square ball offered up a simple tap-in for Ivan Cavaleiro.

And just two minutes after the break, Connor Coady got to the byline, pulling the ball back for Andreas Weimann to work space onto his left foot before drilling unerringly past David Button.

Within a minute of coming off the bench for Fredericks on 53 minutes, Denis Odoi reduced the arrears with a drive from the edge of the area, his right-footer finding the bottom right hand corner of Carl Ikeme's net.

But Dave Edwards killed any hopes of rescuing a point by stabbing home from close range on 72 minutes, after Costa had danced past Ryan Sessegnon to lay the ball back invitingly.

Fulham: Button; Fredericks (Odoi 53), Ream, Kalas, Sessegnon (Malone 80); McDonald (Cyriac 46), Johansen; Kebano, Cairney, Ayite; Aluko.
Subs not used: Bettinelli, Madl, Martin, De La Torre.

Head Coach Reaction

Slaviša Jokanović believes all three of Wolverhampton Wanderers' goals were preventable on Saturday afternoon.

Twice Helder Costa won possession in a dangerous area before squaring to a colleague for a simple finish, which helped his side to a 3-1 win at Craven Cottage.

"We started well enough, we moved the ball from one side to the other," Jokanović stated. "We created some kind of the chances, but we made a very big mistake which brought us into a complicated situation.

"The second half we tried to take a little bit more of a risk, but we didn't adapt ourselves and after a minute and a half they scored their second goal.

"Helder Costa killed us. There were two situations that weren't so dangerous for us, and he created things for his two teammates to put it in the empty goal.

"We weren't solid enough to stop him, and if you concede two or three goals it's not easy to find a good result.

"We concede so many goals. I miss winning 1-0. We can avoid the first, second, and third goal if we're a little bit stronger and more solid in this kind of situation."

Fulham only needed a draw to move into the Play-Off positions, and Jokanović remains optimistic his team can do what's required after the upcoming international period.

"We believed we could take the step and be in the top-six going into the international break," he stated. "We didn't do well enough, we weren't fresh enough, we weren't solid enough.

"We gave them some charity presents during the game, and we paid an expensive price for this situation.

"This break that's in front of us is coming at a good time so we can recover our minds, recover our bodies, and get ready for the last eight games that are in front of us. Right now we are one point behind the top-six.

"It's not time to finish the season, it's time to push harder still, time to recover ourselves, and try and do everything to be in the top-six come the 7th of May.

"In front of us is eight more games. It's true, this result today is a setback for us, like it was when we played Blackburn at home, but it's not the end of the season.

"We're in a situation where we're fighting for the top-six. Let's push, let's try and do everything to be in this position at the end of the season."

Wolves ease relegation worries as Fulham stumble in bid for play-off place

Fulham missed an excellent chance to push into the Championship play-off positions after a 3-1 defeat to Wolves.

The victory helped the visitors earn their third straight win, and with it a further push away from the relegation zone. Goals from Ivan Cavaleiro, Andreas Weimann and Dave Edwards ensured victory, with substitute Denis Odoi scoring for the home side. Scott Malone was dropped to the bench after starting against Blackburn in the week for the hosts. Visiting manager Paul Lambert made two changes to the side that was victorious in their previous visit to West London, against Brentford last week, with Cavaleiro and Ben Marshall replacing George Saville and Nouha Dicko respectively. Fulham started brightly, with Neeskens Kebano just poking his seventh-minute effort wide. However, although the home side had more of the play after that, efforts for either side were few and far between.

The first real chance fell to Kevin McDonald after 28 minutes, when the midfielder put his header wide of the post, following a cross by Kebano. The deadlock was broken by Wolves after 34 minutes. Helder Costa was able to break free in the box, and squared to Cavaleiro to slot home from the six yards. Although Fulham attempted to regain a foothold in the game, they should have done better just before the interval when, having found himself in a good position, Sone Aluko shot weakly at goalkeeper Carl Ikeme. Gohi Cyriac, who netted against Blackburn earlier in the week for Fulham, came off the bench after the break to replace McDonald. The change did little to stem the Wolves tide, and the lead was doubled three minutes after the restart, when Conor Coady passed to Weimann, who fired home a curler from 14 yards. Slavisa Jokanovic made his second substitution of the day, with Odoi coming on for Ryan Fredericks, and he made an immediate impact, his 54th-minute shot from outside the box too much for Ikeme, to put the home side back in the game.

Wolves restored their two-goal advantage after 72 minutes, when Edwards prodded home from six yards out, after collecting a pass from Costa. Scott Malone came on to replace Ryan Sessegnon for Fulham, as the game - and their opportunity to get in the play-off places for now - disappeared away from them.

Slavisa Jokanovic says the 'season is not over' despite Fulham missing the chance to move into the Championship play-offs with defeat to Wolves
Wolves goals all avoidable as Fulham's eight-game unbeaten run is brought to an abrupt halt

Fulham manager Slavisa Jokanovic has not given up hope of steering the club into the Championship play-off places, despite missing the chance to move into the top six for the second time in a week.

The Whites conceded a last-gasp strike to draw 2-2 with Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday night and today lost 3-1 at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers to remain seventh in the table.

Jokanovic said: "At the moment we are one point behind the top six and it's not time for the finish of the season, it's time to push harder, try to recover ourselves and try to do everything we can to get into that top six.

"It's not the second time [we've missed the chance to get into the top six] it's probably the sixth or seventh time in the season.

"In front of us there are eight game mores and we are going to try and catch this opportunity and come the last fixture try and be in that position.

"It's true it's one setback for us, but we cannot, it's not end of the season, we are fighting for the top six and let's push and let's do everything to be in that position come the end of the season."

Jokanovic bemoans defending after Fulham defeat

Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic criticised his side's defending but vowed to keep pushing for a top six place rather than dwell on another missed opportunity to break into the play-offs.

The Whites slipped to a disappointing 3-1 defeat against Wolves at Craven Cottage, only days after unexpectedly dropping points against Blackburn, and remain a single point behind sixth-placed Sheffield Wednesday.

"We must be ready for the last eight games," said Jokanovic.

"Right now we are still just a point behind the top six and it's no time to [reflect]. It's not the finish of the season. It's time to push still hard.

"In front of us is eight games more and we are going to try to get the chance again.

"It's true it's a setback for us this result today and against Blackburn, but we are still in a situation where we fight for the top six.

"We believed we could make one step and be in the top six before the international break but we didn't do enough today.

"We weren't fresh or solid enough. We gave them some charity presents during the game and in this situation we paid expensively.

"We are worried because we concede so many goals and I miss the 1-0 wins. It's part of football too."

The Verdict: Fulham fans were excellent, the players not so much as a cutting edge lets them down in defeat to Wolves
We take a look back at what went wrong at Craven Cottage today

Fulham lost 3-1 at home to Wolves on Saturday to bring to an end an eight-game unbeaten run.

Here's our verdict on a poor day at Craven Cottage.

Is there a psychological block on Fulham making it into the play-off places?

On Tuesday night against Blackburn they were not at their best, but looked to be heading for three points and sixth place until Lucas Joao's 94th minute equaliser.

And they had another chance today but were disappointing and slipped to a 3-1 defeat against a resurgent Wolves outfit.

Manager Slavisa Jokanovic said it was not just twice that they had failed to move into the top six but "six or seven times".

So, mental block?

Ryan Fredericks was to blame for the opening goal as he was out-muscled by Helder Costa - who was brilliant by the way - allowing Wolves' record signing the chance to play across goal for Ivan Cavaleiro to score.

Fulham had done well up until that point, although they had no chances to show for it. Jokanovic brought off Kevin McDonald at half-time, throwing on Gohi Cyriac. If made no difference. A sluggish start to the second half and Whites were 2-0 down when Conor Coady fired into Andy Weimann and he thumped home.

All very nice, but no end product

A fan said to me before the game that what was needed in the summer was a striker. That was evident today as for all their good approach play, Fulham did not cut it in the final third.

Tom Cairney showed his class with some excellent touches and attempts to set the home side on the right path, while Sone Aluko came to life in the second half, but Wolves kept them at bay for the most part and Fulham struggled to break them down.

They did find a way back into the game through super sub Dennis Odoi who cut the deficit in half barely a minute after win thrown on. Aluko's cutback was missed by Cyriac and Odoi picked up on the edge of the box before rifling into the corner.

The Fulham fans were excellent

Not only when they pulled a goal back and needed a 12th man to try and force a result, but throughout. They had their clappers, they got behind their team and they did not get on their backs. It was hardly the greatest performance from the players, but the supporters did not let them know they were frustrated. And with the Wolves fans in excellent number and voice, there was an excellent atmosphere inside the Cottage.

After a period of Fulham pressure, Wolves made sure of the points when Costa again got he better of the Whites defence, pulling the ball back for Dave Edwards to round things off.

Ryan Sessegnon is not the finished article

OK so I think we knew this already, but it's still worth pointing out.

He's only 16 for crying out loud, he has a lot to learn. There's undoubtedly huge potential in there, but he cannot be expected to be the best player on the park every game. He was not alone in having an off day, but so much has been expected of him now, its strange when he's not on it.

The Championship always keeps you guessing

Leeds and Reading were the only teams in the top seven to win this weekend.

They beat two other teams in the top seven, but the other three sides failed against lowly opposition. The promotion race is wide open. It's an exciting league this and it's sure to keep everyone guessing until the very last second.

Fulham do play wonderful football

They just need a born finisher. Who doesn't? They could also do with stopping the flow of goals conceded at the other end. Slavisa Jokanovic yearns for a 1-0 win. But where's the fun in that? If nothing else, Whites are wonderful to watch.
