scored for Greece against Belgium..... On another note - why did we sell Smith

H4usuallysitting

Ended 1-1..... Greece finished with 9 players on the park.... And Stafy played

With all due respect, who cares about him anymore?

Why did we sell Smith?  I guess because he didn't fit into the managers style of play. Although having only one other forward that doesn't play for Derby does seem a problem. But there you go.
The above IS NOT A LEGAL DOCUMENT. It is an opinion.

We may yet hear the horse talk.

I can stand my own despair but not others hope

MaidenheadMick

Mucked my Acca up. All the others came in. Belgium were rubbish though to be fair.

Will be interesting to hear this tale of woe from the players perspective one day.

I would imagine Matt Smith was called in by the gaffer and told of the interest from our neighbours and asked what he wanted to do about it.  The outcome obviously suggests he concluded his future was better elsewhere than Fulham and I doubt many players would have reached a different conclusion in the position he was in.  No one likes being kept out of a side by an upstart like Martin......

Baszab

Matt Smith is a Manchester Uni graduate - he's a pretty smart bloke and will have weighed up all the options to him-   good luck to him - a very decent man and useful player

The final word on Mitroglou. A great buy. Not fit when we bought him, completely mismanaged and then loaned out when we should have kept him.

Let's move on.....

Why did we sell Smith? Because he was an expiring contract, QPR were offering us the chance to profit on him rather than receive nothing in the summer and he didn't fit into our style of play. Lovely guy, wish him the best of luck but not when he's playing us.

Smith always looked pretty good to me, a player to cause problems to any defence especially in the air in their box.
However he clearly was not the type of striker that Jocanovic wanted and therefore there was no point in keeping him. I suspect that the type of striker Jocanovic wants will cost an arm and a leg and we will never see him at the Cottage.

The question for history is where does Mitroglou fit in the list of money wasted on expensive strikers.

1. Marlet
2. Mitroglou
3.Martin ( not sure how much he has cost but it has certainly been wasted)
4. Ruiz
5. AJ

I imagine in the summer window we will be looking to replace Martin. Please lets be very careful before spending big time again.

There is a danger that Stats Boy may think that that strikers with a name beginning with "M" are to be avoided, someone needs to make him aware that Mitchel and McBride were two of our best and acquired at a low cost.

Well, since Ruiz wasn't a striker and since it was his play that kept us from being relegated two seasons in a row, I now have to challenge your entire list. Having Martin -- who is here on a loan and has scored in double figures -- and AJ also on the list makes me wonder if this is just five players you like to complain about.

The hard thing for me to judge Mitroglu was he didn't play for us really, injured when arrived, something like 2 U21 games (scored a couple of good goals) and I think it was 2 subs appearances. Comparing him to Marlet who made 50 odd appearances and scored 10 or so goals, to AJ who played 80 odd games and a similar amount of goals and to Martin who so far has played 25 games with 10 goals is impossible. For me the biggest waste of money was Marlet, what you forget was given that we never paid the full fee up front for Kostas and given we loaned him out we probably didn't lose that much at all on him. Where as for Marlet we paid just under 12 million  and then released him after we had loaned him to Marseille. That to me was the biggest waste

I need to justify my list of failed big money strikers. To start with they all cost us record Fulham transfer fees, millions above anything paid out for any other players , and no doubt were on big fat wages and in one case I believe legal fees were involved.

Now for attacking players with this type of price on their head I expect 40 games a season, at least 15 goals a season and bags of commitment and effort. The type of performances we got from bargain buys like Ivor, McBride , Leroy, and a few others would do nicely.
Lets look to see what we got from these five:-

5. AJ, I really liked him, effort in abundance and he did score a few nice goals but regrettably spent a lot of time out injured and had lost the edge on his pace while at the Cottage. He never justified the price we paid for him but I would agree that he doesn't really deserve to be on the same list as Marley, Mitroglou and Martin.
4. Ruiz a lovely footballer and a nice guy. We never really found the right position for him but he was no defender and was an attacker expected to score goals , he never did this and his starts for us were few , he was not a regular member of the team and clearly not suited for English football. Sorry in reality he was a waste of big money
3.Well Martin would not be on my list but for his behavior regarding Derby over Christmas, A highly played professional just should not behave like that especially with Fulham. In my book he is a waste of space, time and money, we would be better off without him. I can't recall anyonelse ever behaving like that at Fulham.
2. Mitroglou, well he came to us with an injury, refused to play outside of the premiership and was with us for a few years, I never saw him play a full match. He really was no more than an expensive passenger.
1. Marlet had a good few games as striker and as wide man but never impressed or in any way justified the huge price we paid for him.

These players never lived up to their billing and, with the possible exception of AJ, I would be outraged if we were to sign any of them again at half the price we previously paid for them.

I have an issue with the Mitroglu said he would not play outside the prem comment, that is not what wa ssaid at all. The fact I have socialised with him on a number of occassions be to the side for the moment. It was Magath who didnt want him at all, what Mitro said was I would prefer to play in the top flight but will lpay for Fulham if they want me too.

He also isnt a failure like Marlet, as you rightly point out he was injured, not his fault we bought him that way

Id argue that Peter Kitchen was a big failure for us as well.
Ok it was £150K but that was a big signing for us back in the day.

Of the list i dont think you can include Martin. Its not a transfer fee and he has scored a number of goals.
Its the £10M club where we struggle, with only McCormack being a sucess.
