Burton Albion international watch: could Woodrow and Christensen face off, Northern Ireland win

Cauley Woodrow and Tom Flanagan's sides were both in international action this weekend

Burton Albion's Cauley Woodrow did not come off the bench as England Under-21s fell to a 1-0 defeat to Germany on Friday night – but he could yet feature against Lasse Vigen Christensen's Denmark Under-21s.

The Fulham loanee is back in the Under-21s squad after an impressive run of form for the Brewers, which has seen him grab four goals at the Pirelli Stadium. But the 22-year-old did not make it off the bench in Wiesbaden as Aidy Boothroyd's side were edged out by Nadiem Amiri's first-half strike, the Hoffenheim midfielder drilling a shot through a crowd of players to beat Sunderland's Jordan Pickford, the former Brewers loanee.

Lewis Baker almost hit back for England, flashing a shot just over the bar, before a fine stop from Pickford denied the Germans a second as Jeremy Toljan's low delivery looked set to be turned home by David Selke. It was Baker again who came closest to levelling things up late on but substitute keeper Marvin Schwabe prevented him from finding the net to secure the narrow win for Germany.

While Woodrow was one of England's unused subs, Boothroyd has hinted that changes could be made for the upcoming clash with Denmark, as he looks to prepare a squad for this summer's European Under-21 Championships.

"We gave a few players a chance, and I was really pleased with Jacob Murphy (of Norwich City), who was very good," said Boothroyd. "We said at the start of the week that to prepare properly for June, I'd need to look at a few players and get to see how people perform in an environment like this.

"It's a game of chess at this level and, tactically, you've got to make sure you can cope with what's thrown at your – and you've got to throw a few googlies at them. We'll take on board what we learned from Germany and now it's about preparing quickly for Denmark."

Woodrow's Albion teammate Tom Flanagan, meanwhile, did not make his Northern Ireland debut during their 2-0 World Cup qualifying win at home to Norway last night.

Flanagan's consistency across the Brewers defence had seen him again called into the Northern Ireland squad by Michael O'Neill, but he remained on the bench as goals from ex-Albion loanee Jamie Ward and Conor Washington strengthened the men in green's place in second in Group C, behind Germany.

Slavisa Jokanovic singles out Fulham's unsung hero

Speaking to Get West London, Slavisa Jokanovic has praised Kevin McDonald for the role he plays in giving his Fulham side balance.

McDonald has a wealth of experience in the Sky Bet Championship and arrived at Craven Cottage last summer from Wolverhampton Wanderers on a three-year contract.

The 28-year old has made 38 appearances across all competitions this season and has helped Fulham to challenge for a place in May's Play-Offs.

Jokanovic conceded McDonald's work isn't pretty, but is important to what the Cottagers do, he said: "I know supporters prefer great passes, great dribbles and great goals but Kevin has done an important job for us with the balance.

"Kevin is one of the top players in the Championship and is among the most successful passers in the competition.

"This is part of football. His role is really important for us and this part of the job can go more unnoticed by supporters.

"It's not attractive work what he's doing but he's an important part of the team."

Fulham are currently seventh in the Championship table, just one-point behind sixth-placed Sheffield Wednesday.

The Cottagers missed out on two opportunities to break into the top-six recently, after a draw with Blackburn Rovers and a disappointing defeat to McDonald's former side Wolves.

Jokanovic's side will be hopeful of returning to winning ways and adding to the pressure on the current top-six, when they face bottom of the table Rotherham United on Saturday afternoon.

Five reasons why Fulham have the advantage in the Championship play-off race
With seven of the final eight games in the Championship played in April, the coming month will determine who gets into the top six and there is no reason why Fulham can't

Fulham have had an amazing season so far, after many tipped them to be in the bottom half of the table, after only scraping relegation last season, the Whites sit nicely in 7th place just one point behind Sheffield Wednesday in 6th.

With just eight games left of the Championship season, here are five reasons why Fulham can make the play-offs.

Ryan Sessegnon
Not only do Fulham have some of the finest Championship players in their squad, but they also have one of the hottest talents going at the moment in the shape of 16-year-old Ryan Sessegnon, who has been catching the eye of a number of Premier League clubs, including Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham.

The youngster, who has scored four goals this season, has already made 24 appearances for England U19s, and has said that he is ignoring interest from Premier League clubs, and is focusing on winning promotion.

Tom Cairney
Fulham also have Tom Cairney, one of the Championships best players this season, so much so that it earned him his first international appearance for Scotland against Canada on March 22.

The midfielder has also attracted interest, but Fulham have put a price tag on him in the region of £20 million, following interest from Championship title contenders Newcastle United during the January transfer window.

The 'run-in'
Fulham have an easier run of games leading to the end of the season than some of their competitors, facing four teams in the bottom half of the table, including last place Rotherham.

The Cottagers do however come up against Huddersfield and Sheffield Wednesday on the last day of the season, but as Fulham showed against Newcastle, they are capable of beating teams above them.

Slavisa Jokanovic
Fulham manager Slavisa Jokanovic has already won promotion from the Championship, finishing second with Watford back in the 2014/15 season.

The Serbian, who has experience of managing in the Champions League, saved Fulham from relegation last season, finishing just one place above the drop zone, and set a target to finish in the top six this season, and is close to achieving this.

Superior Goal Difference
Fulham have a far superior goal difference compared to teams around them, with +19.

Sheffield Wednesday in 6th have +9, in fact, you'd have to go up to to the top two in the league with Brighton and Newcastle to find a goal difference better than what Fulham have, meaning The Cottagers have the third best in the league, so teams won't want it to come down to the goal difference come the end of the season.

Report: Fulham lining up seven-figure bid for Preston's Callum Robinson; could offer him big pay rise

The Preston North End star's fine form is said to have alerted Fulham among others.

Preston's Callum Robinson celebrates

Fulham are lining up a move for Preston North End star Callum Robinson, the Sun on Sunday reports (26/03, page 63).

It is claimed the Cottagers will launch a £1.5 million bid for the winger, whom Preston signed for free last summer.

Nevertheless, Robinson's fine form since then - eight goals and three assists from 37 Championship outings - suggests any prospective suitor would have to cough up far more than that.

The Sun on Sunday reports that Preston, naturally, would not want to lose the 22-year-old, although Fulham could offer him a 'big pay rise' to prise him to the capital next season.

Slavisa Jokanovic's side are currently seventh in the Championship - just two places and four points ahead of the Lilywhites - and could be a Premier League side by then.

Fulham, along with west London neighbours Queens Park Rangers and struggling Wolverhampton Wanderers, were previously linked with a move for the former Aston Villa kid in January (Daily Mail).

Leeds United Not Looking Over Shoulder at Fulham Insists Whites Star

Rob Green has insisted that Leeds United are looking up rather than over their shoulder at Fulham.

The Whites, who beat Brighton & Hove Albion 2-0 before the international break, presently find themselves fourth in the Championship table with 69 points from 38 games.

Leeds are just nine points behind leaders Newcastle United and eight points ahead of seventh-placed Fulham, the only team who have a realistic chance of knocking the Yorkshire giants out of the top six.

Although with just eight regular league games remaining in the present campaign, Green explained that his side have still not given up hope of a top two finish.

The custodian stated that instead of keeping an eye out for Fulham, Leeds are looking to gain direct promotion back to the Premier League next season.

"All you can do is ask the question. We know we've got a young side and still a lot to learn but a performance like Saturday's – if we can do that eight times on the bounce and win eight games then you're asking the question", Green was quoted as saying by the Yorkshire Evening Post.

"In general two points a game gets you promotion and if we win every game then we'll have 93 points, which is one over.

"It's a big ask, it's a huge ask, but with the form we're in we're looking up rather than down.

"We're not looking over our shoulders at Fulham.

"We've got a game Saturday and then another one on Tuesday. You never know, we could be a few points closer after those.

"You just want to ask the question and if Brighton go on a run now and get promoted, fair enough.

"We've done everything we can to force them into that."

Leeds will next take on Reading on Saturday before facing Brentford three days later, with both being away fixtures.

Fulham's Denis Odoi believes rotation of full-backs is key ahead of Championship run-in
Fulham have a wealth of talent in the full-back department and Odoi reckons whoever plays there brings consistency to the side

Denis Odoi believes Slavisa Jokanovic's rotation of Fulham's full-backs is key considering the number of games the side have played this season.

The Cottagers have played 44 games so far this season in all competitions and face eight monumental matches as they look to finish the campaign in the play-off places, something they are currently a point outside of.

Jokanovic has a wealth of options at full-back and can chose from Ryan Fredericks, Scott Malone and Ryan Sessegnon, along with Odoi, each bringing different qualities to the side.

With talent like that in the right and left back slots, rotation has to be used to keep everyone happy, but Odoi believes that Jokanovic has implemented it to keep everyone fresh, but it hasn't affected the side because whoever plays there brings consistency to the team.

He said: "I think he rotated most with the fullbacks, because I think the heart of the midfield are mostly the same and maybe also on the wings he would've rotated because we had Lucas (Piazon) out with injury and Floyd (Ayite) was out too.

"I think it can be important because we play 46 games (in the league) and you can't underestimate that - you have the two cups too and guys going away on international duty.

Head over heels: Denis Odoi celebrates scoring (Photo: Lewis Darling)

"Rotating can be important and as a coach, you want consistency in your team and I think the full backs have shown that whether one guy plays or the other, it's more or less the same and the wingers also.

"It keeps us sharp but of course everyone wants to play as many games as possible."

Fulham face seven out of their final eight games in the coming month, with their final game at Sheffield Wednesday who currently occupy the final play-off spot, but Odoi is focused on keeping that gap as small as possible.

He added: "We have to try to win every game and we'll see how it goes - I think it's important to keep the gap closed and who knows, maybe the last game will be decisive.

"If that is the game that will decide whether us or them are in the play-offs it will be a massive game but hopefully we'll be able to secure that spot before, but if not then we will that day."

Fulham considering £1.5m move for talented Championship attacker

According to the print edition of The Sun (Sunday 26th March, page 63) via HITC Sport, Fulham are lining up a summer move for Preston North End star Callum Robinson.

Fulham are expected to make a £1.5m for Callum Robinson this summer after his impressive performances for the Lilywhites have caught the eye this season.

Preston North End snapped Callum Robinson up on a free transfer last summer and the former Aston Villa winger has notched 9 goals and 2 assists in 41 appearances for the Lancashire side.

During his impressive season at Deepdale, Robinson also bagged against Arsenal in the FA Cup in Preston's narrow 2-1 loss to the Premier League giants.

Fulham, under the guidance of Slavisa Jokanovic, are enjoying a successful season as they look to launch a bid for a spot in the top six and they are looking to further strengthen their side next season.

Callum Robinson has been identified as a top target with the 22-year-old likely to be the subject of a £1.5m bid from the Cottagers.

3 reasons why Gary Rowett must not let Chris Martin leave the club this summer

Chris Martin hit the headlines this weekend having scored the winner for Scotland in their crucial World Cup qualifying win over Slovenia on Sunday evening.

The Derby County man, who is currently serving a loan spell with promotion-chasing Fulham, has been in the news all season, having struggled to originally settle into life in London.

But he certainly delivered on the international stage this weekend, scoring a last-minute winner for Scotland as they secured arguably their biggest win of the qualifying stages so far.

It marks another stepping stone for the forward, who was booed when he came on at Hampden Park, before leaving to a heroes reception.

And turning back to club matters, new Derby County manager Gary Rowett has a lot of thinking to do when it comes to Martin's future this summer, despite some Derby fans still insisting he's not the man to lead them forward.

But here at the FLW, we think differently and here's 3 reasons why Rowett really mustn't let Martin leave the club this summer...

He's scored goals for Derby in the past
Chris Martin has scored over 60 goals for the Rams in his last three seasons and on many occasions, he's proved to be a real matchwinner at Pride Park.

Granted, his play style isn't that suited to a manger who wants to play seriously stylish and attractive football but in Gary Rowett, the Rams have a manager who is renowned for making his players work hard to really grind out results.

Should he be considering keeping a player that would have certainly worked had he played under Rowett at say Birmingham? Absolutely.

Other forwards in this side aren't exactly banging in the goals
Darren Bent and Johnny Russell are the two most senior forwards in this side and they've hardly banged in the goals for the Rams this season.

Former Villa man Bent is sitting on 12 strikes this season whilst Scottish international Johnny Russell can't get into the first-team.

Andrea Weimann is doing a real job on loan at Wolves at the moment, but he's hardly a 20-goal-a-season striker.

Keeping hold of Martin gives the side a real option going forward.

He's got years left at the top and should be hitting his prime
Martin didn't exactly set pulses racing early on in his career and having left Norwich City, he served a whole number of loan moves before his switch to Derby County was made permanent.

But now at 28, these are the years that should be really counting for Martin now and he needs to really start performing at the top level, something that is now entirely down to him moving forward.

He should be up for taking the challenge and really making a name for himself in Gary Rowett's Derby County side.

Cauley Woodrow scores as England U21s beat Denmark in meeting of Burton Albion's Fulham loanees

Burton Albion striker Cauley Woodrow got his name on the scoresheet as England's under-21s secured a comprehensive 4-0 win against Lasse Vigen Christensen's Denmark under-21s.

Both Fulham loanees started for their respective nations in Randers, with Woodrow leading the line on his return to Aidy Boothroyd's side and Christensen wearing the captain's armband in the Danish midfield.

After suffering a 1-0 defeat against Germany on Friday, it did not take long for England to stamp their authority in this clash, with Ruben Loftus-Cheek nudging them in front with a tidy finish from 12 yards.

Brighton & Hove Albion winger Solly March, who produced an eye-catching display in the Seagulls' 4-1 win over the Brewers last month, curled in a second five minutes later from the righthand corner of the Denmark box.

Christensen produced a decent long-range attempt as Denmark looked to reply - but it was his Albion teammate who found the net after the break, Woodrow coolly turning home from an England corner to mark his third goal for England's under-21s.

Loftus-Cheek then doubled his tally and made it 4-0, before another Christensen drive flew just wide of the far post as the young Three Lions held on for the triumph.

On BT Sport, former England under-21s and Nottingham Forest boss Stuart Pearce said of Woodrow: "I think he was steady with what he did today.

"We perhaps didn't utilise him as much as we could have - but he will be pleased, as any centre-forward is, to put the ball in the back of the net.

"He's got a good sniffer's instinct in front of goal, and it's a good finish there."

Ryan Sessegnon is taking interest away from Leeds United star Charlie Taylor

The Fulham talent's excellent form no longer means Taylor is the Championship left-back in demand.

There is no doubt that Ryan Sessegnon has fast become the most wanted man in the Championship. The 16-year-old Fulham full-back is looking every inch star quality, with six goals in 22 games so far this campaign.

His form has certainly caught the eye of several Premier League teams, which might be good news for Leeds United.

For the past two seasons the Championship left-back that every Premier League team seemed to be linked with was Charlie Taylor.

The Leeds star has been in fine form since breaking into the Leeds first-team and has seen himself linked with plenty of Premier League teams - such as Liverpool, Manchester United and West Brom.

But Sessegnon is now the left-back everyone in the Premier League wants to bring up from the second-tier. The Leeds defender has also spent much of this season out with an achilles problem, which has also taken some of the shine away from his star.

Taylor, who is out of contract at Elland Road in the summer, has seen his options diminish as a result and Leeds fans will hope that leads to him marching on together with Garry Monk's Leeds United revolution.

Missed opportunity for Fulham; could Steve Mounie ease West Brom's striker problems?

Fulham bid £2.5 million for the Montpellier forward last summer but he would cost West Brom far more now.

When Salomon Rondon emulated Duncan Ferguson's 1997 feat and plundered a hat-trick of headers, the Venezuelan appeared to cement his place among the league's most feared forwards.

Since that mid-December treble against Swansea City, however, the 27-year-old has endured almost 1000 goalless minutes in the Premier League. No wonder, then, that Foot 365 claim West Brom are tracking Montpellier's in-form frontman Steve Mountie.

The 22-year-old Benin international is in the form of his life in Ligue 1, scoring 13 goals in 27 appearances in his first full season in the French top tier. In fact, only Edinson Cavani, Alexandre Lacazette, Radamel Falcao and Bafetimbi Gomis have more in 2016/17.

It was only a matter of time before Mounie, who netted in five consecutive games recently, came to Premier League attention. Quick, powerful and a beast in the air, he appears a prototype Tony Pulis forward and, if the early impressions are anything to go by, a potential upgrade on the currently out-of-form Rondon.

The fact that 37-year-old Gareth McCleary is currently West Brom's top scorer means it's hardly a mystery where the club needs to strengthen in the summer, particularly now Sadio Berahino has gone and Hal Robson-Kanu has found the net only twice all season.

Foot 365 report that Middlesbrough, the league's lowest scorers, are understandably interested but the prospect of relegation is likely to have an impact on the deal.

Leicester City, meanwhile, will surely appear a more tempting proposition. Islam Slimani has failed to fire consistently since arriving on a club record deal last summer and Mounie, similar in style and stature, could be viewed as a potential replacement.

However, he is likely to command a far higher fee than the £2.5 million Fulham bid for his services last summer, as reported by the Daily Mail.

The publication claimed that Mounie had caught the eye of Slavisa Jokanovic after scoring 11 times on loan at Ligue 2 outfit Nimes but, after a superb breakthrough season, he appears to be far beyond Fulham's reach.

West Brom is now a far more likely destination.

Paul Konchesky suggests Ryan Sessegnon should stay put

The teenager has been linked with Liverpool this week after excellent form for Fulham.

Fulham defender Ryan Sessegnon is fast becoming one of the hottest prospects in English football.

The 16-year-old left-back has emerged as a first-team regular at Craven Cottage this season, playing 22 times and scoring six goals.

His incredible form for the Cottagers has attracted plenty of interest from the Premier League. Tottenham Hotspur, Everton and Arsenal have all been credited with a move for the player - as have Liverpool.

Liverpool need a new left-back option and Sessegnon appears to be on the radar.

One man who has played for both Liverpool and Fulham is Paul Konchesky. The veteran left-back has been speaking to 888sport and explained how impressed he had been with Sessegnon, but how he wants him to stay put for now:

"Obviously as an older player now I always like to see the younger players stay at the club they're getting a chance with and make a name for themselves.

"He's certainly doing that. Another big year with Fulham and you just don't know what's around the corner but if Fulham go up to the Premier League then why would he have to leave?"

There is no doubting this boy's tremendous and precocious talent. He is thriving at Fulham and Liverpool will be desperate to get hold of him going forward - considering it appears he has another 16-odd years at the top of the game.

But, if Fulham can get promoted this summer, perhaps he might be best sticking around for the time being.

Newcastle to make £20m rated midfielder top summer target

Newcastle have made Fulham midfielder Tom Cairney their top priority transfer signing in the summer if the Magpies are promoted to the Premier League, according to the Northern Echo.

Although publicly manager Rafa Benitez has placed heavy emphasis on the club's final eight league matches of the campaign to secure promotion, behind the scenes the Spaniard has been working hard with the club's recruitment team to draw up a list of summer transfer targets.

The Northern Echo report that the Magpies are keen to strengthen a number of positions but central midfielder is the main priority. Benitez is keen on greater creativity in the middle of the park and he has set his sights on landing Cairney.

The 26 year old has impressed for Fulham this season, with nine goals and 11 assists in 41 games, and was again impressive when he helped the Cottagers to a 3-1 against the Magpies at St James' Park earlier this month.

Newcastle were put off by Fulham's £20m valuation when they made an approach in January, but they are likely to return in the summer if they have Premier League football.

Amid links with Fulham, should Aston Villa hand Callum Robinson a second chance?

The Preston North End striker has been reportedly lined up for a £1.5m bid - but Aston Villa cannot afford to stand idly by.

After three years attempting to force his way into the first team resulted in little more than the odd cameo appearance, Callum Robinson was released by Aston Villa in the summer without as much as a second thought, as reported by the Daily Mail.

Yet, after less than a season at his new permanent employers, Preston North End, the speedy striker is reportedly on the radar on a number of Villa's Championship rivals after netting eight goals for Simon Grayson's side.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa have scored just over a goal a game on average despite spending more than £40 million on strikers in 2016/17 alone. And, to put it in perspective, Robinson has scored more times this season than Ross McCormack has managed at both Villa and Nottingham Forest combined.

Not bad for a free transfer. Yet, The Sun (26/03, page 63) claim that Preston could make a very quick profit on their 22-year-old forward. Fulham, who may well decide against taking up their option to sign loanee Chris Martin on a permanent deal after he attempted to engineer a return to Derby County, are reportedly ready to make a £1.5 million bid.

The Cottagers have hardly struggled for goals this season, ranking as the league's second most prolific side, and if they miss out on promotion to the Premier League this season they will surely be one of the main challengers alongside Aston Villa in 2017/18.

Therefore, news that Fulham are leading the race for Robinson should convince Villa to give their former youth star another chance.
