Leeds United head coach Garry Monk has revealed to BBC Sport that the players are devastated with the defeat to Burton Albion on Saturday afternoon.
The West Yorkshire outfit suffered a 2-1 defeat to Burton away from home at the Pirelli Stadium in the Championship.
After a goalless first half, Burton took the lead in the 75th minute when Marvin Sordell scored. Michael Kightly doubled the home team's advantage just two minutes later, and although Kyle Bartley halved the deficit for the visitors, the hosts held on for the three points.
The result means that Leeds are seventh in the Championship table at the moment with 73 points from 44 matches, three points behind sixth-placed Fulham
Leeds head coach Monk has revealed the mood of his players after the defeat, and has also suggested that the team can end up in the top six.
"They are extremely devastated after today, of course," Monk told BBC Sport. "We had enough chances and situations - maybe not enough quality always - but there's no excuses.
"This group has achieved a lot this season and this final objective was something we wanted to badly. It's out of our hands, but there's a slim chance - and if you have a chance, you have to take it."
Leeds still do have a chance of making it into the playoffs, but they will have to depend on other results.
