Fulham injury update ahead of Hull City's visit to Craven Cottage

Fulham were without several key members of their squad for the visit of Cardiff but two may be fit to return to action on Wednesday night against Hull

Fulham will be without Tom Cairney once again as they prepare for the visit of Hull City on Wednesday night but Rui Fonte may be available to play.

Cairney is struggling to recover from a knee injury that meant he had to pull out of the Scotland squad for their internationals over the break and won't be fit in time for the visit of Leonid Slutsky's men.

Sheyi Ojo is also set to miss out as he recovers from a swollen ankle that he suffered during international duty with the England U21 squad in their 3-0 win over Latvia, while Rafa Soares has yet to start training with the group as he recovers from his injury.

There is good news, however, in the form of Neeskens Kebano and Fonte who could return to action after missing the 1-1 draw with Cardiff .

Kebano missed the game after missing all of DR Congo's internationals with injury, while Fonte suffered a groin injury in the 2-0 victory over Ipswich before the break.

Speaking on injuries, Slavisa Jokanovic said: "I don't believe they are going to play in three days, but we can recover some elements and some players but it's impossible for some to recover in such a short period.

"Sheyi Ojo is out, Tom Cairney is out too and we have some people that didn't start who are working with us.

"Lucas Piazon will be out for a long time but we expect Neeskens Kebano may be available but we are going to see in the next few days."

Crystal Palace sack Frank de Boer: Roy Hodgson should get job - Danny Murphy
ROY HODGSON is the smart appointment for Crystal Palace following Frank de Boer's sacking.

That is according to Danny Murphy, who played under Hodgson at Fulham during his playing days.

Hodgson, 70, is the favourite to replace De Boer after the Dutchman was sacked today.

Palace have lost all four of their league games this season without scoring a goal.

And Murphy reckons Hodgson is the man to turn the ship around.

"He's a very safe pair of hands," Murphy told talkSPORT.

"He'll be really well organised. It's a very astute appointment.

"You're not going to get free-flowing, attacking football from Roy with the players who aren't capable of doing it, dominating possession.

"But he will quickly work out their strengths, weaknesses and play to them.

"What he did at Fulham and West Brom was remarkable. Yes the Liverpool year was awful for him but there was lots of mitigating factors there.

"People will jump on the England bandwagon and say because he failed there he's useless, Steve McClaren is useless because he failed with England.

"But those two have had tremendous success at club level.

"He is a very safe pair of hands."

'Pack your bags Slaven' - Fans have manager triangle theory about West Ham, Fulham & Palace

Fans have been talking about the fall out from Frank de Boer's sacking

Crystal Palace sacking Frank De Boer has got football fans looking at West Ham boss Slaven Bilic next, while one has a theory involving Fulham's Slavisa Jokanovic as well.

De Boer was sacked by the Eagles after just four matches in charge and without scoring a goal. However, the Eagles are still above bottom side West Ham in the table with Bilic under plenty of pressure and many expect him to get his own marching orders if the Hammers fail to beat Huddersfield at the London Stadium tonight.

One Fulham fan has predicted a triangle with the Hammers then bringing in Jokanovic from the Cottagers and his own side replacing him with De Boer.

We Must React Positively - Toral

Jon Toral says the Tigers have no option other than to pick themselves up and look to bounce back when they face Fulham on Wednesday night.

Leonid Slutsky's side travel to Craven Cottage after suffering a horrible 5-0 defeat at Derby County on Friday night and know that a quick response is needed.

"It was a bad night for us, but we need to react quickly because we have another game coming up on Wednesday," said Toral.

"We need to get our heads up and get ourselves ready because we have to put right what happened on Friday night.

"We were a little better in the second half on Friday but that was too little, too late and was more about putting that first half behind us and getting on to the next game.

"I think our heads went down after missing the penalty at 1-0. That shouldn't happen and we need to react better to moments like that to keep ourselves in the game."

Friday night's defeat ensured it was a full debut to forget for Toral, who continues to settle into his new surroundings following his move from Arsenal last month.

"My new team-mates and the staff have been great with me and really welcomed me into the Club," continued Toral.

"I'm very grateful for that and I'm now just looking forward to putting Friday night to one side and kicking on.

"All we're looking to do now is get ready for another tough game at Fulham on Wednesday."

Under-18s beaten after second half Fulham flurry

Two-goal advantage overturned in second half at Hogwood

Reading's Under-18s suffered a 5-2 loss against Fulham at the weekend, with an inexperienced Royals side surrendering a two-goal lead at Hogwood in the U18 Premier League.

The first half was a tightly-contested affair, with both sides having half-chances until the young Royals made the breakthrough in the final minute of the first period.

Jazz Wallace struck from the edge of the area to give our Under-18s the lead going into the break, and that advantage was doubled just several minutes after half-time.

Ethan Coleman, fresh from coming off the bench, rose highest from a free-kick to loop a header into the top corner and give the hosts a cushion.

An experienced Fulham side responded in emphatic style, though, halving the deficit within 90 seconds of Reading's second as Nicolas Santos-Clase fired into the top corner. This was added to soon after with a quick-fire hat-trick from Cameron Thompson to turn the match around.

Thompson earned the match ball with his three goals coming just 19 minutes apart, and the visitors made sure of the result with Reece York bundling a diving header over the line.

With several of our Under-18s promoted to the Under-23s and others still yet to return from injury, there are still plenty of positives to take for our youngsters going forward as they are set to face Norwich City at the weekend.

Speaking after the match, Under-18s' manager David Dodds said: "We played under-par, first half, we struggled to keep possession on a regular basis. Fulham were quite a senior team, I think they had two first years (scholars) and the rest were second years.

"We had the opposite, we had some Under-17s and some Under-16s in there as well. Our two centre-halves and the back four did well to keep us in the game, and then, against the run of play, we scored a goal just before half-time, well taken by Jazz Wallace, maneouvred the ball and beat the keeper down to his right.

"They didn't have an awful lot of clear cut chances, they hit the inside of the post on one occasion. Then we came out in the second half, in a game where it hadn't really been a good performance, after about 47 minutes we were 2-0 up.

"Possibly at that stage, we dropped back and became compact to contain them a little bit, but the unfortunate thing for us, being a young team, we went a bit gung-ho and conceded two goals which were very avoidable.

"We got a little bit of fatigue in the second half as well, and then we had a really good chance at 3-2 down where the keeper was down on the ground and we side-footed past the post which would have got us back in the game.

"We played from the back and they played on the counter a little bit, and we just got sucker-punched on one attack where a lad scored at the near post.

Loan Round-Up

In League One, Marek Rodák made his debut for Rotherham United between the sticks. The Millers went on to beat Bury 3-2 at home.

Rotherham led twice through Kieffer Moore, but each time Bury found a way back into the match until Richie Towell scored in the 89th minute to put the game to bed and secure all three points to push them up to ninth in the league.

Over in Russia, Ragnar Sigurdsson played the opening 69 minutes for Rubin Kazan in their 1-0 away loss to Spartak Moscow, he was substituted for Yegor Sorokin. Rubin Kazan are sixth in the Russian Premier League.

In the Championship, Cauley Woodrow was an unused substitute for Bristol City as the West Country team went on to win 1-0 and the Madejski Stadium, with Aden Flint scoring late on.

Leeds even better than Fulham, says Stephen Warnock

Burton Albion defender Stephen Warnock says Leeds United are right now better than any opponent he faced with Wigan Athletic last season.

Warnock was part of the Burton team that were thrashed 5-0 by Leeds at Elland Road on Saturday, with Thomas Christiansen's side continuing their impressive start to the campaign.

Warnock, who played for Leeds between 2013 and 2015, told BBC Radio Derby: "For me, last year the standout that we (Wigan) played footballing wise was Fulham.

"And I think that performance today was probably better than what we played against Fulham last year.

"But there's plenty of games left this season. They're going to find it tough once it gets to the winter period and the games come thick and fast.

"It's how the players adapt to it, those who aren't used to that intensity in the league, but they seem to have a lot of strength in depth and they've got a big squad.

"You see what's coming off the bench and they obviously added a lot of quality.

"But like I say, they're a good team and we hold our hands up today and we move on to the next game."

Leeds are currently in second place in the Championship table, having taken 14 points from their six games so far, and the Yorkshire club were hugely impressive on Saturday, with new signing Pierre-Michel Lasogga hitting a brace, while Kalvin Phillips, Pablo Hernandez and Kemar Roofe were also on the scoresheet.

The initial signs are certainly very encouraging for Leeds, but they will be wary not to get carried away, especially after they missed out on securing a place in the Play-offs last season.

Next up for Leeds, who have created 49 chances in the Championship this season, is a home game against Birmingham City on Tuesday.

Negative record that sums up Fulham's struggles comes to light

It's been a pretty frustrating start to the season for Fulham who have just been let down by their attacking play so far in the Championship.

Writing that, of course, seems pretty odd given how fluid the Cottagers were going forward last season but it is how it is right now for Slavisa Jokanovic and his men.

Indeed, one win and one loss has been accompanied by four draws so far from their opening six games with the latest coming against Cardiff City at the Cottage on Saturday afternoon.

For sure, then, it is evident where the club needs to improve and this stat from Goodbrand Stats on Twitter certainly doesn't help reduce the frustration:

Fulham, then, need to be that bit more clinical in front of goal – as they were at times last season – and then they'll surely be rocketing up the table back towards the play-offs.

Indeed, their next chance comes against Hull City later this week who shipped five goals at Derby and so maybe, just maybe, a win will be on the cards.

The Verdict

It has been frustrating for Fulham this season, make no mistake, but it should be pointed out that the Whites are at least not far away from turning things into a very good season.

Indeed, they know where they need to improve and they also know exactly how to do it with them scoring goals for last year so there should still be some optimism.

Former Liverpool and Fulham man: Roy Hodgson would be a 'safe pair of hands' for Crystal Palace

Former England boss Roy Hodgson is the current favourite to become the next Crystal Palace manager

Roy Hodgson would be a "safe pair of hands" for Crystal Palace, according to former Liverpool and Fulham midfielder Danny Murphy.

Hodgson is the odds-on favourite to become the next Palace manager, following the club's sacking of Frank de Boer earlier today (Monday).

And ex-England man Murphy, who worked with Hodgson during his time as Fulham manager, says he feels the former Three Lions boss would be an "astute appointment" for Palace.

Smith brace gives U23s victory against Fulham

Young striker Sam Smith scored a brace that gave the Royals' Under-23s a well-earned 2-1 victory against Fulham in the PL2 on Monday night.

Smith's double gives Royals U23s victory after Adebayo equaliser
Scott Marshall earns victory in first match as U23s manager
Royals' second win of the season in the PL2

The Royals started confidently at Adams Park, Jake Sheppard supplying plenty of crosses into the Fulham area, one of which finding Sam Smith but his first-time effort was poked wide of the post.

The visitors looked the more dominant in possession in the opening stages, though, trying unsuccessfully to break down a resolute Royals midfield throughout the first half.

The Royals made the breakthrough soon after, with a cross into the area fumbled by Fulham goalkeeper Magnus Norman, and Smith was there on the follow-up to snatch it from the keeper's grasp and prod home.

Scott Marshall's side grew in stature in the game after the goal, controlling the play in midfield and camping the visitors in their own half in spells.

Josh Barrett looked lively on the left hand side, linking up well with wing-back Ramarni Medford-Smith on a number of occasions, with Barrett looping a cross into the path of his team-mate but narrowly out of his grasp.

Legg was called into action at the other end when Stephen Humphrys found half-a-yard and bent a powerful effort at goal, but the goalkeeper reacted well to dive to his left and save, with Axel Andresson tidying up and clearing the danger.

The visitors burst out of the blocks in the second half as they searched for an equaliser, and they didn't have to wait long as Humphrys' well-timed through-ball found Adebayo in space, he beat the offside trap and put a composed finish past Legg to level the game.

The Royals almost took the lead again straight after, Ryan East finding Barrett in space on the left, striking an effort off the far post but the assistant had his flag up for offside.

It wasn't long before the U23s had their lead back, though, Barrett again in the action to drive into the box and shoot. His effort was blocked but only into the path of Smith, who showed a poacher's instinct to slot in for his second of the night.

Smith could have completed his hat-trick around the hour mark as he burst into the Fulham area once more, but his left-footed effort only found the side netting.

Fulham tried forcing the equaliser with increased attacking intent later on, with a dangerous free-kick from the left hooked on to by Humphrys' diving header, which grazed the top of the crossbar.

Despite the visitors' best efforts and substantial late pressure, the Royals held on in the closing stages to claim a second PL2 victory of the season.

Reading U23s: Legg, Holmes, Osho (c), Andresson, Medford-Smith, Rinomhota, Sheppard, East (Holsgrove 76'), Smith (House 90+1'), Loader, Barrett.

Unused subs: Frost, Driscoll, Rollinson.

Goals: Smith 25', 56'

Fulham U23s: Norman, Felix (Jenz 72'), Kavanagh, Edun, Davies, Atkinson, Kwietniewski (Harris 84'), Kait, Adebayo, Humphrys, Thorsteinsson.

Unused subs: Ashby-Hammond, Elstone.

Goals: Adebayo 50'

Roy Hodgson has been written off before... but he will turn it around as Crystal Palace's new manager

MARK SCHWARZER, who played for Roy Hodgson at Fulham, gives his insight
He says former England boss is 'perfect fit' for south Londoners Crystal Palace
The former West Brom boss will make sure his team are extremely well-drilled
The Australian keeper adds Hodgson will get results 'sooner rather than later'

Roy Hodgson is a perfect fit for Crystal Palace. I can see similarities in what Roy did while at Fulham to how he will go about getting Palace out of trouble.

Starting from my perspective as the goalkeeper, he asked for distribution to be varied. At Palace, as at Fulham, there will be times when it is more difficult to play out from the back.

If it is on, he wants you to play. If it is not, he doesn't mind you knocking it long.

Goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer played under Roy Hodgson at Fulham as they finished seventh

Under Hodgson, Schwarzer and his team-mates also reached the Europa League final

We had Bobby Zamora up front with Andy Johnson running in behind. Bobby would hold the ball up or flick on and Andy and others would give options in support.

In that sense, with Christian Benteke and quick wingers, Palace have a squad that is going to suit the way Roy wants to play.

Roy took 95 per cent of the training sessions on the pitch and I can't imagine that will have changed, even at 70. He is not one to just sit on the sidelines and bark out instructions.

Schwarzer believes the former England boss 'will slot in' as he takes on the Crystal Palace job

Ray Lewington played his part, Mike Kelly too. But even if Roy did let one of his assistants take a session, he was always right near and often couldn't help himself but join in. He is so hands on and dedicated. He simply loves his football.

Of vital importance to him was organising the communication between myself and the defence. We went through a lot of drills at training.

For the first two or three months the players found that quite difficult to adjust to because it was quite regimental. It was very much about knowing positional play.

The Australian keeper played for Hodgson at Fulham and says the 70-year-old 'drilled' the team

But after a short period of time it became very clear what he was trying to do, even if we didn't play particularly well or individuals didn't have a great game, we had a system that everyone fell into. It was so drilled into us that we actually won games because we were so well organised.

Roy wanted us to know inherently our exact movements in certain situations. For example if the right back got the ball, what the right winger or striker would do.

He spent a lot of time explaining how he wanted players to be positioned and what type of balls he wanted.

Schwarzer believes the size and expectation of Crystal Palace is similar to West Brom

One of the key things was that as a midfielder or defender, you always showed opposing players inside. You had your teammate next to you coming over far enough to cover, and everybody tucked in.

If the ball was switched to the other side there was a quick transition, everyone shuffled across.

If you were on the right-hand side and the ball got shifted to the left, then it was the left midfielder who was the first person to engage – without diving in. They got into a position to show the opposing player back inside.

Schwarzer insists Palace under Hodgson will get results they need 'sooner rather than later'

At times you gave opponents nowhere to play and we could steal the ball. Defenders had to make sure they didn't drop off to create too much space for midfielders to run into, or strikers to come short. It was really about finding the balance.

I also see similarities in the way his appointment is being greeted. I have seen criticism already. Back then he was written off too. He was coming from abroad and people had said he was never going to get another chance at the Premier League after Blackburn.

But we had great success at Fulham and though his time at Liverpool didn't quite work out he was excellent again at West Brom.

Right now the size and expectations of Palace are similar to those clubs and with his methods I believe Roy will slot in really quickly. I am not saying they will get instant results but it will be sooner rather than later. I think he is a perfect fit.
