Ex-Premier League player questioned by Swedish detectives over alleged involvement in major match-fixing scandal

Player was voluntarily interviewed under caution by Swedish detectives investigating Gothenburg vs AIK Stockholm match-fixing scandal
Swedish Allsvenskan fixture was called off at short notice back in May
AIK goalkeeper Kenny Stamatopoulos alerted authorities that someone had offered him a large amount of money to under-perform
Prosecutors will announce whether they are pressing charges next month

A former Premier League player is at the centre of an investigation into a major match-fixing scandal in European football.

The player, who played for three top-flight clubs, was voluntarily interviewed by police in Sweden over match-fixing claims that saw the Gothenburg vs AIK Stockholm match suspended in May.

According to The Times, the ex-star, who was working as a football agent after ending his playing career at AIK, was interviewed under caution by detectives from a special sports crime unit.

Gothenburg vs AIK Stockholm was due to take place in May but was called off at short notice. Now detectives have interviewed a former Premier League player over claims of match-fixing

Prosecutors are expected to announce whether there will be any charges in a few weeks' time.

The Swedish Allsvenskan fixture was called off at short notice after goalkeeper Kenny Stamatopoulos alerted authorities he had been approached by a former AIK team-mate two days before the match and offered a large sum of money - reported to be around £180,000 - to underperform.

Canada international Stamatopoulos was the reserve goalkeeper but was called up following an injury to the first choice.

Hakan Sjostrand, the secretary general of the Swedish Football Association, told The Times: 'It was a mixture of money and concrete threats, special circumstances that convinced me we cannot play this match.

'We needed to protect this goalkeeper - what would happen if he made a mistake. This was important for the game and the reputation of football.

'It is not football that creates this match-fixing problem, it is betting.'

Transfer talk: Fulham to reignite interest in former Blackburn Rovers winger after losing out to Wolverhampton Wanderers in January

The winger arrived at Molineux from Blackburn Rovers in January this year, but according to reports Wolves will allow the 26-year-old to leave on loan when the transfer window reopens.

Fulham are thought to be leading the race to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers winger Ben Marshall in January, according to The Sun.

The winger arrived at Molineux from Blackburn Rovers in January this year, but according to reports Wolves will allow the 26-year-old to leave on loan when the transfer window reopens.

The promotion contenders have bolstered their attacking line significantly over the summer, with Marshall only starting one game for Nuno Santos's side.

Slavisa Jokanovic's side were rumoured to be interest in a move for the winger before making to move to Wolves in January, and it's thought they could be keen to reignite this interest in an attempt to bolster their promotion push.

Fulham want January move for Wolves midfielder

Fulham are interested in a January move for Wolves winger Ben Marshall, as per a report by Get West London.

The London club were apparently interested in the midfielder when he was at Blackburn Rovers, but he opted for a move to Wolverhampton. However, he has struggled to get into the Wolves side who are flying under Nuno Espirito Santo and could be set to leave the club in January.

Marshall, 26, has only played 17 times for Wolves since joining in January. Born in Salford, Marshall played in the Manchester United academy before joining Crewe Alexandra as a 14 year-old. After progressing through the youth ranks at Crewe, Marshall joined Stoke City in 2009 but never played for them. He had loan spells with Northampton, Carlisle, Cheltenham and Sheffield Wednesday.

He signed for Leicester in January 2012. He spent a year and a half with the Foxes before signing for Blackburn Rovers. He played 126 games for Rovers and scored 11 goals. His good early form last season attracted the attention of Wolves, who swooped in for him in January.

Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic will be fully aware that Marshall is available for transfer. The Serbian boss will be looking to add more faces to his squad in January to bolster the chances of another promotion push this season. Marshall can also play right-back as well as right midfield so would fit in well with Fulham's attacking full back style of play.

There will no doubt be other interest from Championship clubs for Ben Marshall too, so Fulham will have to see of competition for him.

How Burton Albion will know very well about summer loan target Cauley Woodrow at Bristol City

Will the Brewers face the striker who helped keep them in the Championship last season?

Cauley Woodrow might have been two months into a second loan spell with Burton Albion right now after making a telling mark last season.

Instead, the England under-21 international could be lining up against the Brewers for Bristol City on Friday - and Nigel Clough knows just what threats his side may have to deal with.

Woodrow joined Albion on loan in January and scored five goals in 14 appearances, including three decisive strikes in home victories over Wolverhampton Wanderers, Norwich City and Nottingham Forest.

That impact led the Brewers to make another loan move for the Fulham striker this summer - but the 22-year-old instead elected to join the Robins until the end of the campaign,

He has scored once in four outings so far as Lee Johnson's side have pushed themselves into the promotion conversation with some fine early-season form.

Burton will be aiming to put a dent in that form on Friday - and Clough's players will at least have a good insight into one player's threats should Woodrow feature.

"He's a goalscorer and he's capable of getting goals, whether he starts or comes off the bench," said the Brewers boss of Woodrow.

"We are certainly aware of that.

"He did brilliantly for us in the second half of last season, and we did try to get him back on loan this season.

"But I think the deal for the club, for Fulham, it was more attractive for him to go there (Bristol City).

"We completely understand, and he's gone to a club that is going to challenge.

"It'll be nice to see him, and we'll try to give him a whack if we see him on Friday night!"

George Groves vs Chris Eubank Jnr could be set for Craven Cottage as Chelsea 'rule out' hosting megafight

The British super-middleweight duo are set to clash as part of the World Boxing Super Series

The British pair are set for a blockbuster world title bout early next year

Chris Eubank Jnr and George Groves could be set to face off at Craven Cottage early next year, with Fulham's stadium emerging as the front runner to host the all-British super-middleweight showdown.

The pair are on a collision course as part of the World Boxing Super Series, with the winner of Groves' WBA world title defence against Jamie Cox going on to face Eubank in the semi finals.

Lifelong Chelsea fan Groves would love to see the fight held at Stamford Bridge, and while the possibility of hosting it at the home of the Blues has apparently been explored , the club have ruled out having the fight there due to the potential damage it could do to the pitch midway through the season, according to ESPN .

Arsenal's Emirates Stadium has also been sounded out along with the Amex in Brighton, but Championship club Fulham are the favourites to be given hosting duties should they opt for an outdoor event.

Promoter Kalle Sauerland, one of the driving forces behind the Super Series, told the Evening Standard : "The tournament dictates the dates so it has to be January or February, which also happens to be a very busy time for venues so you have to be creative with other options.

"We want as many people as possible to be able to see such a great event and that might mean taking it outdoors.

"We want to talk to four or five clubs but at the moment Fulham looks most realistic. I think that's a fight you could put in a lot of places."

Eubank Jnr secured his place in the last four of the tournament with an emphatic third round knockout of helpless Avni Yildirim of Turkey in Stuttgart last Saturday, while Groves won his world title at the fourth time of asking against Fedor Chudinov back in May.

Could Fulham's Craven Cottage be set to beat competition from Chelsea, Arsenal and Brighton to host George Groves vs Chris Eubank Jnr in next year's boxing mega-fight?

The next round is set to take place at Wembley Arena on Saturday, but it's thought that a football stadium could be a suitable setting for the next round.

Groves is a lifelong Chelsea fan and is thought to be keen on the fight taking place at Stamford Bridge, while Arsenal's Emirates Stadium and Brighton's Amex Stadium are also in the running.

Fulham considering January move for Wolves midfielder Marshall

(Photo: Action Images via Reuters)

Fulham manager Slavisa Jokanovic is reportedly ready to bring out of favour Wolves midfielder Ben Marshall to Craven Cottage, with a January move imminent.

The Whites' interest is said to stretch back to the 26-year-old's time at Blackburn, with his career having stalled due to injury since his arrival at Molineux in January this year.

Nuno Espirito Santo's side are enjoying a terrific start to the campaign, which has made it difficult for Marshall to get back into the side after injury.

He's played just 17 times for the club, scoring twice, since that January move and could be a candidate for the chopping block come the winter transfer window.

Marshall's versatility will also be of interest to Jokanovic, the player able to operate at right-back as well as on that side of the midfield.

The midfielder came through the Stoke City academy but failed to make a league appearance for the club, and instead departed on loan to Northampton, Cheltenham, Carlisle and Sheffield Wednesday.

He then moved on to Leicester City where he played 61 times and scored nine goals in an 18 month spell with the Foxes. From there he had an excellent three-and-a-half year stint with Rovers, scoring 1 goals in 140 games before swapping Ewood Park for Moline.

Jokanovic Signing This Watford Defender Could Be A Great Piece Of Business For Fulham In January

Craig Cathcart

Why Watford Centre-Back Craig Cathcart Would Be A Good January Signing For Fulham

Fulham have been enjoying an upward spiral of form ever since Slavisa Jokanovic took over. Of late, spectators have been very impressed by the flowing attacking style of play implemented by the manager. With things going considerably well for the club, Jokanovic is understood to be interested in a January move for Watford centre-back Craig Cathcart.

The Northern Ireland international was an integral part of a Watford side which won promotion to the Premier League under current Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic about two years ago. Regardless, Cathcart could be seeking an exit despite signing a four-year deal with the club recently.

There is one issue, however. The defender sustained a knee injury which has restricted him to just 19 minutes of action so far this season. The injury could see him on the sidelines until Christmas, but that should give him enough time to recover before assuming duties at Fulham.

The former Manchester United defender is yet to make 100 appearances for Watford since signing on a free transfer from Blackpool in the summer of 2014. His tenure at Vicarage Road was limited to mainly off-the-bench displays, making it all the more likely for him to consider a move.

Meanwhile, Fulham will be looking to add more quality to their ranks to continue their upsurge in performances. Jokanovic has been scanning the market for defenders this summer and he could complete a deal for Cathcart come January.

Watford defender Craig Cathcart has plenty of experience of playing football in the top two tiers of English football and would certainly add competition for places at the back for Fulham. It remains to be seen whether Marco Silva will want to retain the 28-year-old at Watford, especially after former manager Water Mazzarri barely utilised his services for major chunks of the previous season.

The likes of Miguel Britos, Younes Kaboul and Sebastien Prodl were deployed ahead of Cathcart, leaving very little scope for him to perform. At Fulham, Cathcart will certainly receive adequate playing time, and that is important for him since he is nearing 30 years of age.

Cathcart is a tall centre-back, who is confident with the ball on the ground and aerially as well. Fulham could benefit from his experience at the back as they aim to tighten up their defensive ranks and attempt at sealing promotion.

The club recruited Spanish defender Marcelo Djalo in the summer, but the 23-year-old has only appeared in the Carabao Cup so far, meaning there is a void that Cathcart can easily fill in.

PNE boss expecting biggest test so far

Calum Woods is a possible replacement for the suspended Darnell Fisher at Fulham

Alex Neil thinks Fulham will provide his Preston side with their 'biggest challenge of the season yet' this weekend. While the Cottagers sit three points and four places behind PNE, Neil likes the way Saturday's hosts play. That said, he is confident North End can build on what they have done in the first two months of the campaign. Neil's men head to London eight games unbeaten and having won their last two away matches.

They will be backed by a good-sized following, with ticket sales nearing the 1,500 mark. North End manager Neil said: "I think this will be our biggest challenge so far of the season. "Tactically they are really difficult to play against. "Fulham move the ball as well as anyone in this division. But if we go there and get it tactically right and the lads perform, there is no reason why we can't win the game."

Neil felt the international break came at the right time for Preston. Although they had a good September with three wins and three draws, he wanted the fortnight's gap in action to work with the squad on the training ground and to give them a few rest days. A big part of Neil's work with the squad since he took over has involved mind-set and belief in themselves. Said Neil: "This squad are a determined bunch.

"They believe and have an expectation as much as you
allow them. "If you tell them they can beat anyone in this league and results are beginning to back up performances, they believe that. "That is a mentality that you want to drive through to the players – it is the only way to move things on. "Just competing and being happy where you are means you will only achieve that, as you don't believe you can do any better. "From day one when I came in, I wanted them believing how good they were.

"Having been with another team at this level and being successful, I know what it takes to achieve what you are looking for. "When I first looked at the squad I thought we could achieve something this year." One selection issue for Neil at Fulham will be who plays at right-back. Darnell Fisher is serving a one-game suspension after collecting his fifth yellow card against Sunderland. Calum Woods would seem to be the likely replacement, having played at Birmingham last month when Fisher had an injury. Another option is Marnick Vermijl who has found game-time limited this season. The Belgian's only start came in the League Cup against Accrington.
