Report reveals mixed Preston North End news ahead of important clash with Fulham

A report in the Lancashire Post has delivered a mixed update on Preston North End's playing squad ahead of this weekend's clash with Fulham in the Sky Bet Championship.

Alex Neil is expecting to welcome back three players from injury following last week's international break, with John Welsh, Ben Pearson and Paul Gallagher all coming back into contention.

Welsh and Gallagher are certainly in contention for Saturday's clash at Craven Cottage, but Neil is prepared to play the waiting game with Pearson, who has been out of action for a number of weeks.

Neil said: "Gally is fine, he has been training. John Welsh is fine, his calf has cleared up and he's been training well.

"Ben Pearson has been training this week, which is good to see.

"Obviously we will have a gauge on Ben at the end of the week to see where we think he is at. He's been out for six weeks, which is a long time and we need to make sure he is okay."

Pearson missed all of September, and has not featured for North End since the end of August.

Whilst the midfielder could potentially miss out, Neil will definitely be without Darnell Fisher, who is suspended, and Tommy Spurr, with the Preston boss confirming that the defender had picked up an injury.

Preston head to London this weekend for another stern test against Fulham, who are one side looking to make up ground on Neil's men.

The Lilywhites currently sit sixth, three points ahead of Saturday's opponents, who are 10th.

Neil's side head to Craven Cottage on an eight game unbeaten run.

The Verdict

This really is mixed news for Preston and Neil.

Despite the boost of seeing Welsh, Gallagher and Pearson all returning, it is frustrating for Neil that Fisher is suspended and Spurr has picked up an injury.

Preston have enjoyed a fine start to the season, but Neil will know maintaining this start will be a test for North End and he will need a fully fit squad at his disposal.

Memory match: Fulham 1-1 PNE, November 2015

Preston North End's visit to Fulham in November 2015 was a tale of three strikers in many ways.

Joe Garner headed PNE into the lead, his second goal in successive games coming after a 15-match drought.

That was an advantage held by the visitors until the latter stages when a free-kick from Cottagers front man Ross McCormack brought the hosts level.

Sadly, a third striker was to enter the fray and hit the headlines in a distressing manner.

Stevie May came on as an injury-time substitute with North End pushing to find a winner.

A challenge in the box left him with horrific damage to his right knee, an injury which put his career on hold for the best part of a year.

On his return, May wore the PNE shirt only five times and this summer cut his ties with Deepdale by moving to Aberdeen in a £500,000 switch.

This Craven Cottage trip came as Preston were finding their feet at Championship level after an uncertain start.

They had put together a six-game unbeaten run, one which had been halted a week earlier by Blackburn.

Sharing the spoils with Fulham was the start of a run which saw them lose just three times in the next 16 league games.

North End started well, with Eoin Doyle forcing an early save from Joe Lewis.

Tom Clarke touched the ball across the goal to Paul Gallagher, his shot dealt with rather comfortably by Lewis. With 11 minutes played,
Preston took the lead from a corner on the left.

Gallagher played it short to Greg Cunningham, who rolled it back to him.

His right-foot cross curled over to the back post where an unmarked Garner placed a header into the net.

Another Garner effort went past the post, then a shot from Doyle went too high after North End had broken upfield on the counter.

Keeper Jordan Pickford produced a fine save in the 29th minute, tipping a chip from Moussa Dembele over the bar.

If North End had enjoyed the better of the first-half play, Fulham had more of a say in the second.

Adam Reach survived a loud shout for a penalty when a challenge on full-back
Ryan Fredericks sent him to the ground.

Tom Cairney put a free-kick over Pickford's bar but team-mate McCormack was to prove more accurate in the 77th minute.

John Welsh handled the ball as he attempted to make a sliding tackle just outside the box.

McCormack curled the free-kick round the wall and into the net past Pickford.

It was the Scotsman's 12th goal of the campaign.

Both sides pushed on in the closing stages to try and force a winner.

Welsh fired over the bar for North End and then came May's cruel blow during time added on.

Taking possession on the edge of the box, May drove on and took a slightly heavy touch.

Fulham defender Richard Stearman came across and put in a strong but fair tackle on the substitute.

The ball went out of play for a corner but May did not get up, it quickly obvious that he was seriously injured.

He was stretchered off, North End playing out the last few moments with 10 men as they had used all their subs.

Scans revealed that May had torn three ligaments in his knee and broken a small bone, the joint having
hyper-flexed.

'Stay put!' – Should this Fulham star depart Craven Cottage if the Premier League comes calling?

Fulham defender Ryan Sessegnon is one of the most exciting talents outside of the Premier League.

At the tender age of just 17, the full-back has already become a fundamental cog in Slavisa Jokanovic's side and he's been receiving admiring glances from top-flight clubs.

If Premier League clubs come calling in January, should the young player remain at Craven Cottage?

The writers here at Football League World have issued their verdicts....

Alfie Burns

I believe Fulham is still the best place for his development.

At 17, he has a long career ahead of him and plenty of time to take the step up to the Premier League.

One reason I don't believe Sessegnon should leave in January is because he is yet to find his best position.

Obviously it is on the left side, but it is hard to tell whether he is better in midfield or defence.

Chris Gallagher

Stay put!

What a great place Fulham is for a youngster.

Sessegnon is playing regular football, at a great standard in a good team.

The money will be better higher up, but he's going to be playing U-23 and Carabao Cup football, it shouldn't even be an option from the sporting perspective.

His big move will come, he has the quality, but he needs to be patient. Sessegnon should only move when he feels he will play for his new club regularly and that could be a few years yet.

Instead, help Fulham get to the Premier League.

Adam Simeoni

The youngster isn't going to be with Fulham for long, but he should at least see out of the season.

Moving in January gives him no time to impress his new manager, something he would have during preseason if he moved in the summer.

The player may as well be a regular starter rather than rotting on a Premier League bench for six months, so he should at least see out the season in the Championship.

George Dagless

Tottenham appear to have lost interest.

The young left-sided player was heavily linked with Spurs and Liverpool last season and in the summer but this year that has all gone quiet.

He is still playing well but perhaps the novelty of such a young player performing like that has worn off?

He'll hope it hasn't but if he doesn't have any interest in January and get a move, he might wonder if it's going to happen. It should eventually though.

Fulham announce details of proposed redevelopment of Riverside Stand

The club have revealed that they plan to have a new single-stand Riverside Stand but will have to demolish the existing stand should they get planning permission

Fulham have announced details of their proposed Riverside Stand redevelopment which would see Craven Cottage increase its capacity to 30,000.

The club is holding to consultations, one today (October 12) at Craven Cottage from 2pm to 8pm, and another one before the Preston match on Saturday for supporters to have their say on the plans.

The club proposes to change the designs to a single-tier stand, with space for a variety of premium entertainment and activities as well as a roof top bar, while delivering a walkway alongside the River Thames linking the Cottage with Putney Bridge and Bishop's Park.

Fulham have told the Fulham Supporter's Trust that the club intends to deliver a full planning application to Hammersmith and Fulham Council by November 24 2017, but has revealed the current Riverside Stand would have to be demolished as part of the work.

The club have also revealed there are no plans to move Fulham away from Craven Cottage whilst the work is carried out.

Fulham Supporters' Trust elected board members, representatives from Populous, the architectural firm behind the plans and club representatives will all be present at both consultations for fans to ask questions of about the new design.

Neil Confident Ahead Of Craven Cottage Clash

PNE boss Alex Neil is confident his side can get a result away to a strong Fulham side this weekend.

North End travel to Craven Cottage to take on the London outfit and after finishing in the Play-Offs last season, Neil won't be underestimating the hosts but feels his side are capable of getting the three points if they perform as well as they have done this season.

Speaking about Saturday's opposition, the gaffer said: "They are a very good side, but equally I think they are a very good side if let them become a good side so we've got to make sure that we don't do that basically.

"We need to go about our work the way that we want to play and try and force our style on them rather than allowing them to dictate the game.

"They are a good side, and I think on their day they are one of the teams that can really hurt you if you don't perform well enough."

The manager believes his team can go to the capital and bring three points back to Preston and knows his side can match the hosts on their day.

"We are not going there to try and contain Fulham, we are going there to try and beat Fulham. Equally, each department of the game means you're going to have to defend and you're going to have to be able to attack.

"The way we've worked so far this season is that our main style of defence is offence, where we go and try and win the match. That's worked for us, it's not always going to work but if we perform as well as we can, and show as much energy and endeavour as we have done then there's no reason why it can't continue."

The international break has given the players a chance to recover after an intense month of fixtures in September, and with no mid-week games this month, the gaffer is pleased he has clear weeks to prepare his players for matchday.

"I think the preparation is probably the biggest thing that suffers, in terms of the recovery, certainly for our lads we've got a young squad and they can churn the games out, although the intensity we play at does take its toll.

"The preparation becomes a bit tough because after a game on a Saturday, on the Sunday they are a bit mentally tired and filling their heads full of information isn't the best thing to do.

"So certainly on a Monday we are cramming a lot of work into one day whereas when you've got the full week you can spread it out and a lot of the time you can drip feed it in. It's great for us to go Saturday to Saturday, with all the effort and endeavour that we into the 90 minutes, I think it's important we get the rest afterwards so we can regroup."

adidas and Fulham FC look to the future with new long term partnership

adidas and Fulham FC are pleased to announce a new partnership taking the leading football brand in the UK and our 138 year old club into the future with a long term extension.
adidas and Fulham have a long history together, having originally partnered in 1977/78 and then again in 1997/98. The two came back together for the 2013/14 season and this extension will keep the Club in the famous three stripes up to and including the 2022/23 campaign.

After narrowly missing out on promotion last season, Fulham are continuing to invest in infrastructure to fulfil the ambition of heading back to the Premier League. Off the field objectives are in line with creating a sustainable club by being progressive, whilst respecting the values of a rich history. For adidas, the Club and their supporters represent an authentic football icon within the brand's key city of London.

The announcement of this long-term deal coincides with the re-opening of the newly refurbished and stylish Stadium Store at Craven Cottage which is situated within the Johnny Haynes Stand. The new store has incorporated design elements of the iconic stand, built in 1905, reinforcing Fulham FC's heritage and positioning as London's original football team.

Casper Stylsvig, Chief Revenue Officer of Fulham FC, said:  "We have established a successful partnership with adidas over the past few years and are delighted this has now been extended. adidas is a prestigious brand which continues to demonstrate best in class qualities. We share common goals to bring success and realise our ambitions during the coming seasons, demonstrated by a mutual commitment by both parties with this long-term extension."

Gavin Thomson, Managing Director of adidas UK, said: "The extension of our partnership with Fulham FC was a simple decision for us; the Club are building on their unique history as London's original football team and are looking to the future, which we look forward to creating with them."

The newly refurbished Stadium Store at Craven Cottage will officially be opened by Fulham FC Head Coach, Slaviša Jokanović, and First Team players tomorrow (13 October), on the eve of the Club's Championship fixture against Preston North End.

U23s Host Stoke

Fulham host Stoke City on Friday evening at Motspur Park in a 7pm kick off.

It is the seventh round of the PL2 and it presents an opportunity for the Whites to climb the table, with the Potters occupying 10th place with Fulham one place behind in 11th.

Last time out the Whites endured a difficult trip north as they lost 4-0 on the road to Blackburn Rovers at the Lancashire FA. In their last home match, they beat West Bromwich Albion 3-0 under the lights.

Stoke also lost their previous match in a 2-1 away loss to Middlesbrough, who the Whites lost to in their opening fixture of the season.

Stoke have won two of their six matches so far and three points ahead of the Whites in the PL2 Division 2. One of the Potters' wins came over Aston Villa, who Fulham lost to 3-2 at Craven Cottage.

Fulham Supporters' Trust to welcome Brian McBride back to Craven Cottage for Preston North End match

McBride will make his first visit to the Riverside bar named in his honour when he joins Fulham fans for an evening of memories, questions and answers tomorow night.

The Fulham Supporters' Trust are looking forward to welcoming former Fulham captain Brian McBride and his family back to Craven Cottage this weekend.

The revered Fulham and American striker and his wife Dina accepted an invitation from Fulham Football Club and the Trust to be guests of honour at Saturday's home fixture against Preston North End, who gave him his first taste of English football in 2000. McBride will make his first visit to the Riverside bar named in his honour when he joins Fulham fans for an evening of memories, questions and answers tomorow night before meeting supporters in the reopened stadium shop on Saturday lunchtime before being introduced to the Craven Cottage crowd at half-time of the afternoon's Championship clash.

Fulham Supporters' Trust chair Tom Greatrex said: 'We made the suggestion of bringing Brian back to Craven Cottage during our September meeting with Fulham Football Club. We are delighted that the Club have moved so quickly to make this happen and I know the fans are looking forward to welcoming Brian and Dina back this weekend. Brian's place in Fulham folklore was firmly established over his six years at Craven Cottage, culminating in his pivotal return from a serious injury to lead Roy Hodgson's team in the Great Escape in 2008'.

McBride, who was twice voted the club's player of the year, scored 40 goals in 153 appearances for Fulham and became the first American to captain a Premier League. Since retiring from professional football, the fourth highest scorer in US national history has set-up his own football academy, a company designed to help the next generation enjoy football and become a board member of Urban Initiatives in his home city of Chicago.

Woods On Fulham Test

Calum Woods is expecting a tough test at Craven Cottage when North End face Slaviša Jokanović's Fulham.

Woods feels the international break has been beneficial for the squad and believes the team are capable of going to the capital and getting a positive result.

Speaking to iFollow PNE ahead of the game, the 30-year-old said: "It's been a good chance for us to recover and get ready for Fulham. We obviously know it's going to be a tough game but hopefully we can go there and get something out of the game.

"I definitely think we can go there and show what we are about as we've seen against some of the good teams we've played this season and we've done well against them and had some good results.

"I think we've got to take each game as it comes, obvioulsy the first one is Fulham so we will get that out of the way first, hopefully get a result there and then look at the next games then.

"It's a really tight bunch of lads so there's a great atmosphere about the place, all the lads are together and we've got a really good squad of players and good depth in the team.

Woods could make his return to the starting Xl this weekend with Darnell Fisher serving a one-match suspension after picking up five bookings, and Woods knows the defence will be in for a tough afternoon.

"In the past, when I've seen Fulham they are always down the sides, they are always attacking from the full backs and the wide players so they are obviously going to push on so we will have a job on our hands at the back.

"I think we've got enough in our team to show what we are about going the other way to create chances and get goals ourselves so hopefully on Saturday we will be able to do that.

Sheyi Ojo is out for Fulham

Fulham will be without Sheyi Ojo when they host Preston.

The on-loan Liverpool winger suffered a dislocated shoulder at QPR a fortnight ago and faces eight weeks on the sidelines.

But Rafa Soares could make his belated debut having trained all week with the first team.

The left-back, signed on loan from Porto in August, has yet to feature due to an ankle injury but came through a friendly against Southampton during the international break.

Preston have had mixed news on the injury front prior to their trip to Craven Cottage.

Midfielders Paul Gallagher (illness) and John Welsh (calf) returned to training over the international period, as did Ben Pearson (dead leg), though having been out for over a month the latter may not be ready to return straight away.

In defence, right-back Darnell Fisher is suspended having been booked on five occasions and Tommy Spurr has picked up a knock in training.

Boss Alex Neil was already short in that department, with Tom Clarke (Achilles), Greg Cunningham (knee) and goalkeeper Declan Rudd (thigh) long-term absentees.

Riverside Stand Exhibition

Craven Cottage hosts two exhibitions focusing on the design of the redeveloped Riverside Stand on Thursday 12th (2-8pm) and Saturday 14th (9am-1pm) October. We invite supporters to come and view the exhibitions, however if you are unable to get to Craven Cottage, the following information features all of the details on display.

The Riverside Stand

During its long history FFC has spent 25 seasons in English football's top division. For all involved with the Club the aspiration is to see a swift return to the Premier League.

In 2013 we secured planning permission to expand the Riverside Stand by 4,300 seats which would increase the overall capacity of the stadium to approximately 30,000 seats. This scheme can be developed at any time by the Club. However, the owner, Mr Khan, wants a design based on a new concept that will deliver a wide range of benefits both now and for future generations. These include creating a high quality new Stand for our fans and a world class leisure destination that significantly enhances the relationship with the River Thames.

Our emerging proposal

CGI of emerging Riverside Stand design

The new design delivers a quality riverside development – more than just a football stand next to the river. Consistent with the 2013 approved scheme, the proposal will include:

1. More seating for fans (not exceeding the 30,000 approved capacity)

2. A riverside walk following the approved line

3. Apartments at either end of the stand to create activity (9 are proposed)

AND it will also include:

1. A new design that better connects with the river

2. Restaurants, bars and other uses to create a leisure destination for use on match and non-match days

3. An iconic roof design

4. A basement for 'back of house' facilities and lounge space.

The new stand design will be lower than the maximum height of the approved design

Key proposed concept design principles

Sketch of proposed new riverside walkway – same extent as the approved walkway[/size][/i]

Will the proposal affect me?

1. Wind: Testing is underway. Initial results show the wind effects will be similar to the approved scheme.

2. Noise: Similar to the approved scheme on matchdays. On non-matchdays more active use of the building will be managed to respect our neighbours.

3. Jobs & Community: New jobs and investment will be created in the local area. The restaurants and bars will be available for the local community.

4. Traffic: Similar to the approved scheme on matchdays. On non-matchdays the proposed restaurants and bars will encourage trips outside of peak hours and traffic will be a fraction of that on matchdays.

5. Lighting: Two existing floodlight masts will be removed and a new floodlighting system provided below the proposed roof. The additional glazing and increased non-matchday use will be managed through careful selection of materials to minimise light spill.

What happens now?

Indicative programme

Please let us know what you think of the emerging new design and our aim to create a new riverside destination at Craven Cottage at fulhamfc.com/riverside-stand.

Opta stats

Fulham have won each of their last three league games against Preston, last winning four in a row in January 1993 (five in total).

The Lilywhites are aiming to end a five match winless league run against Fulham (D2 L3), with their last win coming in October 2000 at Craven Cottage.

No Championship side has hit the woodwork more than Fulham this season (9, level with Bristol City).

Alex Neil has won just one of his last 15 league games against sides from London (D6 L8), beating Brentford 5-0 with Norwich in December 2016.

Fulham have used just five English players in the Championship this season, fewer than any other side.

Preston have conceded just six league goals this season, less than half they had conceded after 11 games last season (14).

Jaguars owner on protests: NFL bosses don't know they're racist
