Head Coach Reaction

Slaviša Jokanović was satisfied with Fulham's performance, as his side fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Preston North End.

A late Denis Odoi strike pulled the Whites level in the last minute of the game to win a point for the home side.

"I must be satisfied." Jokanović stated in his post-match press conference.

"In the second half, we connected with a few more passes, held the ball more and took more risks. We showed great personality and character on the pitch.

"We started to play with more confidence and personality. It's important that we recovered.

"Generally, our plan didn't work well in the first half, but in the end we created many chances.

"We've lost a few points at home late on, but today, we won one point in the last minute, so we must be satisfied.

"In my opinion, we deserved a point."

Fulham's Head Coach also praised the opposition for the level of intensity and for their style of football that they showed through the entire match.

"Preston deserve credit too. It's not easy playing against them." Jokanović said.

"They played with a very high intensity and we didn't adapt quickly enough. They're one of the best teams on the ball.

"They put us under pressure and we lost too many balls in our own half. After the mistakes, they scored and could have scored many more, especially in the first half. We didn't find a solution for the physical part of the game and they won all the challenges."

Jokanović brought on Tom Cairney during the break and is delighted with the impact his captain's had on the game.

"We found some help from Tom Cairney, who in the first two connected with a few key passes. At the other end, David Button saved us during a few complicated situations.

"We didn't use Tom at the start of the season because of a few complications, but he completed some work in the last session and we expect him to be available for the game that is in front of us."

Fulham 2-2 Preston NE

Both sets of players watch Denis Odoi's stoppage time strike go in

Denis Odoi slotted in a 96th-minute equaliser as Fulham came from two goals down to draw at home to Preston.

The visitors were 2-0 up inside 25 minutes - Jordan Hugill tapping in Sean Maguire's cross before Tom Barkhuizen's effort deflected off Maguire and in.

Oliver Norwood halved the deficit with a penalty after Rui Fonte was fouled in the box by Calum Woods.

Norwood forced Chris Maxwell into a late save, but the keeper then dropped a long ball, allowing Odoi to level.

The draw saw Slavisa Jokanovic's Fulham rise one place to ninth in the Championship, two points from the play-off places and three behind Preston, who moved up to fifth.

Preston's second goal had some fortune about it, the touch off Maguire giving keeper David Button no chance, though Alex Neil's side were well on top until the last 20 minutes at Craven Cottage.

The return of Fulham skipper Tom Cairney as a half-time substitute lifted Fulham, for whom Kevin McDonald clipped the post from range before Norwood's penalty.

Preston, who lost Maguire to injury before half time, had only conceded six Championship goals coming into the game, but Odoi's last-minute strike meant they have now failed to beat Fulham in six league games.

Preston boss Alex Neil: "Chris has come and collected so many crosses for us this season that have relieved pressure, and won us points, so I'm not going to be critical of him in terms of being an aggressive goalie, coming to try and help his team.

"Time was up. The fourth official showed me his watch. It was 95 minutes and it started going to 20 and 30 seconds and the referee allowed them to put another ball into the box.

"We hunted and pressed and grafted and ratted them all over the pitch and they couldn't deal with it.

"We need to have more quality in the final third. But I can't ever question commitment and work rate."

Fulham manager Slavisa Jokanovic: "They didn't surprise us, they are one of the best teams off the ball, we are one of the best teams on the ball.

"They put us under great pressure and after we made mistakes they could have scored more goals. We didn't find a solution for the physical part of the game.

"In the second half we connected with a few more passes and took more risks and I believe we deserved this point.

"We lost a few points at home in the last minute and today we won one in the last minute so we are satisfied."

Fulham 2-2 Preston North End: Player ratings as Tom Cairney makes his return from injury

A last gasp Odoi equaliser sees Fulham come back from two-goals down at the Cottage

Fulham came back from two goals thanks to an Oliver Norwood penalty and a last gaps Denis Odoi striker to get a share of the points at the Cottage.

Slavisa Jokanovic made three changes to the side that beat QPR - Ryan Fredericks and Sheyi Ojo missed out through injury while Yohan Mollo was dropped in favour of Neeskens Kebano, Floyd Ayite and Denis Odoi.

Preston took the lead, however, when Sean Maguire found himself in down the left before playing the ball back to Hugill who slotted home after 19 minutes.

They doubled their lead through Barkhuizen as he won possession down the right before cutting in and firing a shot, which took a deflection off Maguire to get past David Button.

Tom Cairney came on in the second half and Fulham improved - Kevin McDonald saw his strike hit the foot of the post as the hosts started to pile on the pressure.

They got back in it when Fonte won a penalty, which Norwood stepped up and smashed into the bottom corner with just under 15 minutes left in the tie.

And it was a last minute goal from Odoi after Ream won the ball with Maxwell to give Fulham a share of the points at the Cottage.

Here's how we rated the side:

Button 7: Produced a lovely save to keep the score at just 1-0 in the first half. Struggled to find his passing range which didn't allow Fulham to build from him as they have done. Despite the score it was another good game from Button.

Odoi 6: Made a few good challenges at right back but didn't have the presence going forward that Fredericks brings to the team. Didn't provide the outlet on the right that Fulham needed.

Kalas 6: Struggled with the physicality that Hugill brought to the game and couldn't win his duels with the Preston front man.

Ream 6: Started the game well and looked the dominating presence at centre half. Gave the ball away cheaply for the second goal but looked strong at the back.

Sessegnon 6: Had a decent first half and was the cause of a few problems down the left, but the second goal came from him and Ream being unable to deal with the ball.

Norwood 6: Was caught in possession a number of times in the first half that led to opportunities for Preston. Was better in the second half but still unable to do much in possession. Lovely penalty to halve the defecit.

Johansen 4: Struggled in midfield to get the time and space as a result of the relentless Preston pressure, particularly Pearson who didn't even allow him time to breathe.

McDonald 7: Was the best performer in the first half and tried to get things going for the Whites. Continued the same form into the second half with Cairney in front of him once again.

Ayite 6: Started the game really well, constantly hounding the Preston defence and winning the ball in dangerous areas.

Fonte 6: Tried to come deeper to get the ball but wasn't really able to get on the last man's shoulder like he would've wanted to. Did well to win the penalty, which came as a result of his drive to continue hassling the Preston backline,

Kebano 5: Didn't have the best of halves and was largely anonymous for the most part. Was subbed for Cairney at half time.

Subs -

Cairney 7: Changed the way the side played completely after coming on, dictating play as he looked to bring Fulham back into the tie.

Mollo 6: Didn't really affect play too much after he came on for Johansen, but has a few driving attacks.

Match report: Fulham 2 PNE 2

Jordan Huill celebrates his opening goal for PNE at Fulham

A 96th minute goal denied Preston North End victory against Fulham at Craven Cottage. With more than five minutes of stoppage-time played, Cottagers right-back Denis Odoi fired home an equaliser after goalkeeper Chris Maxwell hadn't been able to hold a high ball under pressure from a Fulham challenge.

North End had taken a 2-0 lead in the first half, Jordan Hugill and Sean Maguire scoring in a seven-minute spell. It was an impressive performance in that first 45 minutes to say the least, PNE's high pressing working a treat.

In the second half, Fulham piled on the pressure and got back into the game with a penalty from Oliver Norwood. Then just as it looked like North End had seen the game out and with the game going beyond the five extra minutes signalled, disaster struck as Odoi found the net. The North End side had shown two changes, Ben Pearson and Calum Woods replacing Josh Harrop and the suspended Darnell Fisher.

Pearson partnered Daniel Johnson in the centre of midfield, with Alan Browne playing a supporting role behind Hugill - Maguire was on the left and Barkhuizen on the right. The early action was played at break-neck speed with play swinging from end to end, the visitors adopting a high press to stop their hosts getting into their passing rhythm. A back header from Tom Ream which fell short of its target almost let in Barkhuizen in the fourth minute, keeper David Button having to be on his toes to kick clear. At the other end, Norwood put a shot from the edge of the box too high, then Rui Fonte headed over at the far post from a Stefan Johansen cross.

Barkhuizen glanced a header wide from Johnson's cross, before Maxwell prevented North End falling behind in the 18th minute. Ryan Sessegnon hurdled a sliding tackle from Woods down the Fulham left and surged on into the box. His low cross was pushed out by Maxwell and fell to Norwood, the midfielder's shot superbly saved one-handed by the keeper with Floyd Ayite putting the rebound over the top. Preston took a 18th minute lead, Pearson's pass sending Maguire away down the left with the home fans appealing for offside. Maguire got into the box and squared a pass into the middle for Hugill to side-foot home from seven yards.

Browne went one-on-one soon after, Johnson's pass playing him in, but the Irishman put his shot too close to Button who got down to push it behind. The advantage was doubled in the 25th minute, Barkhuizen getting down the right channel and into the box, his shot clipping Maguire on the ankle and beating Button at the near post. Maguire limped off soon after, pulling up as he brought the ball out of defence - his right thigh was strapped as he walked to the tunnel at the interval. In the 43rd minute, Maxwell dived to palm a deflected shot from Kevin McDonald behind. During six minutes of added-on time at the end of the first half, Browne tried his luck with a shot from 40 yards after a clearance from Button had been collected by Johnson. Stirred up no doubt by a half-time blast, Fulham started the second half on the front foot. Fonte's shot from 20 yards flew inches too high, then a McDonald from further out struck the base of the far post. John Welsh replaced Pearson as the hour mark approached, Alex Neil no doubt mindful this was the midfielder's first game for more than six weeks. North End had two great chances on the counter-attack in quick succession. For the first, Johnson slid in Harrop down the left side of the box, the substitute miscontrolling the ball to start with but recovering to curl a shot just wide. A strong run from Josh Earl carried him to the edge of the penalty area in the 65th minute, his pass finding Harrop who put his shot too close to the keeper who pushed it behind. In between those two chances, Ben Davies met a Johnson corner but headed over. Earl then curled a shot wide from 20 yards after fastening on to Harrop's throw-in. Fulham got themselves back into the contest in the 74th minute when Fonte went down in the box under a challenge from Woods, referee Darren England awarding a penalty and showing the PNE right-back a yellow card. Norwood tucked the spot kick into the bottom corner to halve the deficit. In the latter stages, Fulham piled on the pressure in search of an equaliser and North End had a big let-off in the 89th minute. Tom Cairney's chip over the PNE defence was headed across goal by Denis Odoi and fell towards Norwood by the far post. But somehow he failed to make contact with the ball and it went behind, credit though for Maxwell for putting him off as the ball came over. North End were dealt a cruel blow with five minutes of stoppage-time played as the home side levelled. Maxwell came to collect a punt into the box, couldn't hold it under a challenge and the ball fell to Odoi who drilled it into the net. Despite the second half pressure they had come under, it still felt harsh on North End with the goal coming so late on. Fulham: Button, Odoi, Kalas, Ream, Sessegnon, McDonald, Norwood, Ayite, Johansen )Mollo 71), Kebano (Cairney 46), Fonte. Subs (not used): Soares, Graham, Djalo, Cisse, Bettinelli. PNE: Maxwell, Woods, Huntington, Davies, Earl, Pearson (Welsh 59), Johnson, Barkhuizen (Robinson 71), Browne, Maguire (Harrop 30), Hugill. Subs (not used): Vermijl, Boyle, Mavididi, Hudson. Referee: Darren England (Barnsley)

Attendance: 18,435 (1,736 PNE)

Odoi's last-gasp goal rescues point for Fulham

Fulham 2 Preston 2

Defender Denis Odoi salvaged a point in a dramatic late finish as Fulham came back from two down at Craven Cottage.

The Whites gave away goals to Jordan Hugill and Sean Maguire inside the first 25 minutes – only the second time they had conceded twice in a game this season.

And despite pulling one back through Oliver Norwood's penalty, they seemed set to finish empty-handed until Odoi swept home in the sixth minute of added time.

Fulham had the better of the opening quarter of an hour, with Norwood and Rui Fonte going close before Ryan Sessegon's storming run down the wing set up another opportunity for Norwood.

But Preston goalkeeper Chris Maxwell blocked his shot and Floyd Ayite bundled the rebound over the bar, with the visitors breaking immediately to secure an 18th-minute lead.

Maguire tore away on the opposite flank before setting up Hugill to sidefoot home – and it was only thanks to David Button's point-blank save from Maguire soon afterwards that the Whites avoided falling further behind.

That respite proved to be brief as Sessegnon yielded possession to Tom Barkhuizen, who skipped into the gap behind him and rifled a left-foot drive that struck Maguire and zipped beyond Button.

Fulham skipper Kevin McDonald almost reduced the deficit with a low attempt that Maxwell turned behind – but the armband was soon returned to Tom Cairney, whose second-half introduction was intended to spark a fightback.

Initially, it did look as if the Whites might find a way into the game, with Fonte's drive tipped over by Maxwell and McDonald hitting the foot of a post from distance.

At the other end, Preston substitute Josh Harrop squandered two opportunities to wrap up victory – and the home side gained a lifeline 17 minutes from time when Fonte went flying under pressure from Paul Huntington.

Norwood converted the spot-kick to raise Fulham hopes – and they kept going until the very end, when Maxwell spilled Tim Ream's cross and Odoi rolled the loose ball into the net.

Fulham: Button; Odoi, Kalas, Ream, Sessegnon; McDonald, Johansen (Mollo 71), Norwood; Kebano (Cairney 45), Fonte, Ayite.

Fulham 2-2 Preston North End

Denis Odoi scored a 96th-minute equaliser after a dreadful mistake from Preston goalkeeper Chris Maxwell as Fulham claimed a 2-2 draw at Craven Cottage.
Maxwell dropped a long hopeful punt from Fulham's Tim Ream 16 yards out and Odoi poked the loose ball into the empty net seconds away from the end of added time.
In-form Preston still extended their unbeaten run to nine games, but missed the chance to move into the automatic promotion positions ahead of Wolves' match against Aston Villa. It was Fulham's fourth draw in six home games, but they deserved a point for a spirited fight back from two goals down.
Jordan Hugill gave Preston the lead with his fourth league goal of the season after 18 minutes and Sean Maguire deflected in Tom Barkhuizen's shot to make it 2-0 seven minutes later. Oliver Norwood pulled one back from the penalty spot in the 74th minute but it looked as though they would not find a second until Maxwell's error.
It was an entertaining match with both sides looking to attack, and after 16 minutes. Fulham's Ryan Sessegnon skipped past a challenge on the left and fired over a hard low cross.
Maxwell could only push the ball out to Norwood but redeemed himself with a one-handed save and when the ball rebounded to Floyd Ayite, the Fulham man volleyed high over the crossbar.
Two minutes later, Preston were ahead. Fulham appealed in vain for offside as the ball reached Maguire on the left, and his low cross was swept in by Hugill.
It could have been two when Johnson's diagonal pass sent Alan Browne through, but Button blocked his low shot at the expense of a corner.
Fulham brought on captain Tom Cairney as a half-time substitute as they looked for a reply and his passing immediately made Fulham more of a threat. Rui Fonte's long-range effort whistled just over and Kevin McDonald's shot from just outside the penalty area hit the foot of Maxwell's left-hand post.
Preston could have made the game safe if not for Josh Harrop's heavy touch when Johnson sent him clear of defenders. Then Harrop, set up by Josh Earl, fired straight at Button.
They were costly failures as Fulham halved the arrears after 72 minutes. Preston defender Calum Woods tripped Fonte 10 yards out and Norwood coolly converted the penalty.
It seemed as if his miss from close range two minutes from normal time would be the closest the Cottagers would come until Maxwell's error.

Jokanovic hails fit-again Cairney after Fulham fightback

Slavisa Jokanovic hailed Tom Cairney after the fit-again Fulham star helped inspire a late comeback against Preston.

Cairney, who had been out since late August with a knee injury, made an impact after replacing Neeskens Kebano as the Whites came back from two down to draw 2-2.

"We started playing with more personality and we found help from Tom Cairney," said boss Jokanovic.

"In the first minutes he connected with more passes and gave us more confidence. We showed great character on the pitch and I must be satisfied, especially with our second half."

Fulham should not have been allowed time to score their last-ditch equaliser, according to visiting manager Alex Neil.

Referee Darren England permitted play to continue after the five additional minutes had elapsed, and Denis Odoi capitalised on goalkeeper Chris Maxwell's mistake to make it 2-2 and earn the Whites a point.

Neil said: "Time was up. The [fourth] official next to me showed me his watch, it was 95 minutes, and the referee allowed them to put another ball into the box.

"However, we should deal with that ball – we made an error and it cost us. They didn't create a lot in the second half and I thought we were relatively comfortable."

Slavisa Jokanovic satisfied with Fulham's second half comeback against Preston

Two second half goals, including a last gasp Denis Odoi strike gave Fulham a share of the points at the Cottage

Slavisa Jokanovic felt satisfied with his side's showing as they battled against a strong Preston side to claim a share of the points at Craven Cottage but wasn't happy with the first 45.

Fulham came from two goals down to salvage a point thanks to an Oliver Norwood penalty and a last-second Denis Odoi goal after Jordan Hugill and Sean Maguire had given Preston the lead.

Odoi pounces to punish Preston
by Dan on October 14, 2017

It must have had something to do with the return of Brian McBride. Fulham, so lethargic and feeble in the first half as Preston North End's mesmerising football saw them score twice in seven minutes, were gradually awakened once Tom Cairney was reunited with Kevin McDonald in central midfield. Slavisa Jokanovic's side gained real belief when Oliver Norwood stepped up to score from the spot but, despite relentless pressure, an equalised looked out of reach until the previously faultless Chris Maxwell juggled Tim Ream's deep cross and Denis Odoi pounced. An injury-time equaliser hasn't been so wildly celebrated at the Hammersmith End since Cairney's majestic curler that precipitated Leeds' laughable slump to seventh place.

That Fulham's salvation arrived in the 96th minute greatly exercised Alex Neil, who remonstrated with the home fans behind the dugout when they grew tired of Preston's cynicism. The former Hamilton Accies boss was adamant that Darren England, who appeared to have left his yellow card in the Cottage during the first half, should have blown up after the five indicated minutes. As Neil reflects on how Preston, who looked so sublime with a combination of pace and unremitting pressing, squandered such a dominate position, he would do well to remember that, without the gamemanship that crept into North End's game, the added time would not have mattered.

The visitors were vibrant from the off, with Tom Barkhuizen almost punishing a short back header from Tim Ream, but David Button scampered off his line. Barkhuizen sent a free header wide from Daniel Johnson's cross, before a sixty-second spell that summed up the fine margins of the Championship. Fulham, who had gone close through Norwood and Rui Fonte, looked certain take the lead when Ryan Sessegnon athletically evaded a late lunge from Callum Woods and saw his cross parried away from Marshall, but the Preston something beat away Norwood's strike with his right hand with Floyd Ayite's acrobatics only troubling the Putney End spectators.

Preston went straight down the other end and scored. Sean Maguire was a yard offside when Ben Pearson's pass sent him clear and the Irish forward made the most of his good fortune by supplying Jordan Hugill for his sixth goal of the season. Fulham were in shock and, after Norwood was played in trouble, Alan Browne should have made it two after being played in by Johnson's clever pass but Button bailed out his side with a smart save.

The home side's reprieve was short-lived. Barkhuizen found it far too easy to cut inside Ream and fire at goal from the edge of the box, with Button beaten by the deftest of deflections off Maguire. The former Cork City forward soon made an early departure, limping off clutching his hamstring, but the game followed largely the same pattern. Preston looked like they could score at will, with Browne nearly punishing a miscued Button clearance with an outrageous lob from 40 yards that brought former North End loanee David Beckham to mind. At times it seemed as though Kevin McDonald was the only man in a white shirt as he appeared to be covering each blade of grass. The midfielder was denied just before the break by another splendid save from Maxwell.

McDonald was still imperious in the second period but Fulham were fired up by Jokanovic's own version of the hairdryer and 45 minutes from Cairney, who is clearly still working his way back from that knee injury. The hosts began at quite a pace with Fonte fizzing a 20-yarder fractionally over the bar and when McDonald bent a beautiful effort past Maxwell but saw it come back off the post there was a sense that this might just be one of those days.
Former Manchester United midfielder Josh Harrop spurned a couple of good chances in quick succession, but Fulham were gradually gaining momentum.

Fonte, who had pulled Preston's centre halves from pillar to post in a desperate bid to get Fulham back into a game that appeared beyond them got his reward for persistence when another intelligent run was spotted by Ayite and some swift footwork enticed Woods to make an ill-advised lunge at the ball. It was a clear penalty, but the drama came after the award. Fonte wasn't entirely keen to take it following his miss at Loftus Road and Floyd Ayite found himself with the ball in hand, but Norwood intervened and coolly converted the spot-kick, sending Maxwell the wrong way with real confidence.

Norwood kept finding himself in advanced positions. His snapshot from 20 yards almost embarrassed Maxwell, who grabbed it at the second attempt, but the Northern Ireland midfielder looked certain to provide the equaliser in the final minute of the ninety, when Cairney's lofted pass located Odoi well forward on the right. The Belgian's header back across was begging to tucked home from close range but Norwood failed to get a telling touch, ending up in the net instead of the ball. Maxwell stayed down for an age clutching first his head and then his knee, neither of which felt the impact of Norwood's challenge and there was some irony, therefore, in the Welshman's eventual clanger. With what seemed destined Fulham's final throw of the dice, Marshall came charged out to collect Ream's cross and spilled it at the feet of Odoi, who made the matter of finding the net look ridiculously easy.

FULHAM (4-3-3): Button; Odoi, R. Sessegnon, Kalas, Ream; McDonald, Norwood, Johansen (Mollo 71); Ayite, Kebano (Cairney 45), Fonte. Subs (not used): Bettinelli, Soares, Djalo, Cisse, Graham.
