'Slavisa, thank you for the memories' – Fulham fans preparing for managerial exit following Brentford defeat

Derby day defeat is crushing at the best of times, but Fulham fans will be furious with the way their side capitulated against Brentford at Griffin Park.

1-0 inside half an hour and looking the better side, a David Button mistake allowed Sergi Canos to equalise from range, and it was curtains for the Cottagers from that moment on.

Further goals for the Bees from Romaine Sawyers and Ollie Watkins came either side of a Denis Odoi red card, with defeat condemning the visitors to fifteenth place in the table.

Manager Slavisa Jokanovic is under ever-increasing pressure, and the result has put the Serbian boss' position at the club firmly under question.

Nine points off the playoff race and an upturn in form nowhere in sight, fans have every right to be worried about the progress of their side.

Tom Cairney believes Fulham's first half was one of their better performances, but red card changed tie

Denis Odoi was sent off after receiving a second yellow shortly after Brentford's second, and after that Fulham were never in the tie

Tom Cairney believes the first half at Brentford was one of Fulham's better performances away from home, but that the Denis Odoi red card changed the game.

Fulham took the lead through Neeskens Kebano when a nice move of flowing football saw Ryan Fredericks put the ball across goal for the forward to put away, but Brentford got back into it towards the end of the second half when Ollie Watkins tore through the midfield to play in Sergi Canos, who stuck the ball under David Button.

Odoi was sent off a second yellow after Brentford's second, and after that Fulham didn't get a sniff as the Bees controlled the game, with Watkins putting the finishing touches on the game with a third goal.

And the Fulham skipper is disappointed that his side didn't take their chances and kill the game off a bit more during the first half.

He said: "I don't know, it was going okay the first half, a bit disappointed with their goal and we thought it would be a good game second half but obviously the red card changed the game.

"Maybe away from home it was [one of our better performances] in the first half, we could've taken our chances a bit better and killed the game a bit more, but I don't know, it's just one of those frustrating games.

"We have to go and play our next game and win next week."

Fulham captain Cairney 'getting stronger'

Fulham captain Tom Cairney believes his fitness is improving after he completed his fourth consecutive match since coming back from injury.

Cairney missed nine of Fulham's first 16 league matches this season because of a knee problem.

He featured in the Whites' 3-1 west London derby loss at Brentford, in which Fulham took the lead but had Denis Odoi sent off just after half-time.

Cairney said: "It was an okay first half. We're a bit disappointed with their (first) goal and thought it was going to be a good game in the second half. But the red card changed the game.

"We could have taken a few more of our chances and killed off the game, but it was just one of those frustrating days."

He added: "The knee's getting stronger and feels a bit better, so I'm fairly happy with it. I just have to recover now and go again next week."

Cairney: Odoi's dismissal changed the game
by Dan on December 3, 2017

A desperately disappointed Tom Cairney felt Denis Odoi's second-half dismissal killed off Fulham in the west London derby yesterday.

Slavisa Jokanovic's side went in front at Brentford through Neeskens Kebano's close-range finish after a fine move down the right, but conceded a sloppy equaliser to Sergi Canos shortly afterwards and, when Odoi shown a second yellow card shortly after substitute Romaine Sawyers had put the Bees in front, the game was always likely to slip away from the visitors.

The Fulham captain, who struck the bar with a curler from outside the box as the ten men searched in vain for an equaliser, cut a frustrated figure in his post-match interview with GetWestLondon's Ryan O'Donovan. Cairney said:

I don't know, [I thought] it was going okay [in] the first half. [We are] a bit disappointed with their goal and we thought it would be a good game second half but obviously the red card changed the game.

Maybe away from home it was [one of our better performances] in the first half. We could've taken our chances a bit better and killed the game a bit more, but I don't know, it's just one of those frustrating games. We have to go and play our next game and win next week.

The scant silver lining for Fulham fans after the disappointment on derby day comes with the news that Cairney believes he is getting closer to full fitness following the frustration of recovering from a serious knee injury.

The knee's getting stronger and feels a bit better, so I'm fairly happy with it. I just have to recover now and go again next week.

Slavisa Jokanovic believes Fulham wonderkid Matt O'Riley could soon be part of the matchday squad

The 17-year-old signed his first pro deal at the club on his 17th birthday and is pushing for a spot in the match day squad

Slavisa Jokanovic believes Fulham wonderkid Matt O'Riley could soon be part of the matchday squad as he continues to impress whilst training with the first team.

The 17-year-old signed his first professional contract at his boyhood club on his 17th birthday , putting pen-to-paper on a deal that will see him stay at the Cottage until 2020.

O'Riley made his first team debut for the club in the 2-0 win over Wycombe in the Carabao Cup in August and has impressed the first team management this season, especially in the behind-closed-doors friendlies with Southampton where he ran the show.

He regularly trains with Fulham's first team, along with other U23 team members such as Tayo Edun, Mattias Kait, Steven Sessegnon and Luca de la Torre, who have all been involved with matchday squads, while also travelling with the side as part of the matchday group to first team games.

The future is bright for the youngster, and Jokanovic has revealed O'Riley is fighting to be in the first team matchday squad and could soon feature for Fulham.

He said: "[The contract] It's good, it's another 17-year-old player and in the last few months he is working with us.

"Technically he has impressed us in all the days and he's still young and working well, he's pushing himself to be strong and is fighting to be part of the competition team.

"Why not? It's another young man with great mentality who wants to learn things and soon we will know how much time he will need to be part of the Fulham competition squad."

Brentford 3-1 Fulham: Player ratings
by Dan on December 3, 2017

It wasn't Fulham's finest afternoon at Griffin Park and running the rule over the boys in white didn't prove much fun either.

David Button: After last season's triumphant return to Brentford, this wasn't a trip to Griffin Park that Button will look back on fondly. The reason that Slavisa Jokanovic keeps picking the former Bee is his distribution from the back, especially with the ball at his feet, but that was well below-par yesterday. Button also was at least partly at fault for the sloppy Brentford equaliser when Sergi Canos' shot squirmed under his body. It might have taken a deflection but the goalkeeper shouldn't still have done better. Made a couple of good reaction saves from Barbet after the break – but the momentum of the match shifted following the hosts' equaliser. 5

Ryan Fredericks: Produced a brilliant break down the right to create Fulham's goal with an inviting cross from which Kebano profited at the back post. Looked very lively going forward all afternoon, but once the Whites were reduced to ten man had to moderate those instincts to try and support an overworked defence. Can't escape questioning for allowing Canos to cut inside in the box before he struck that crucial leveller, either. 6

Tomas Kalas: Looked a little shakier than usual at the heart of a visiting defence that badly missed the reassuring presence of Tim Ream. Brentford got little change out of the Czech before their equaliser and he was up to the physical challenge in the air, but played a few misjudged passes and went on one mazy dribble in the second half that left the defence badly exposed when he lost the ball. 5

Denis Odoi: An afternoon to forget for the Belgian, whose impetuousness got the better of him. Odoi might have been an adequate stand-in at centre half at Reading and Leeds but he was badly found out yesterday. Jokanovic could have brought him off when he fell heavily following a collision outside the Fulham box, but Odoi should equally have heeded Bobby Madeley's warning that he would be dismissed after another foul when he scythed down Watkins. It was the height of stupidity to check the former Exeter attacker right in front of the referee and his assistant a few minutes later – and Fulham paid the penalty. 4

Ryan Sessegnon: Sessegnon looked lively when raiding forward from left back and enjoyed galloping in the gaps behind the Brentford back line at will in the first half. Fulham's adventurous system is predicated on the full backs bombing forward but, with the game in the balance as they pressed for an equaliser, the visitors were punished when the teenager's enthusiasm saw him surrender possession in an advanced position – and Brentford broke to score the clinching third one with five minutes later.  5

Kevin McDonald: Probably Fulham's best performer. Whilst the Whites were at their full compliment, McDonald's positioning and reading of the game allowed him to pick off most of Brentford's attacks. His sullen scowl towards Button following the equaliser was almost a carbon copy of the one we saw at Sheffield the other week after Leon Clarke's second. Did well as a makeshift centre back after Odoi's dismissal but the Whites' backline was severely overworked by that point. 7

Ollie Norwood: Neat and tidy in midfield but the Northern Irish midfielder will have been disappointed not to make more of impact during a first half where Fulham were largely in the ascendancy. Norwood lashed two presentable opportunities, one from a set-play and another fashioned from a Fredericks cross, high into the Ealing Road – and gave the ball away when possession was at a premium after the sending off.   6

Tom Cairney: It was encouraging to see the Fulham captain dictating the play from central midfield again after clearly managing that troublesome knee injury for so long. Jokanovic's tactical tweaks seemed to leave the Scottish playmaker a little too deep for my liking, often orchestrating Fulham's attacks from the halfway rather than trying to get on the end of them. He almost dragged the Whites back into the game with a dipping effort from outside the box but it struck the bar. 6

Sheyi Ojo: There was plenty of effort and endeavour from the Liverpool loanee, but this was ultimately a frustrating afternoon. He failed to beat Bentley twice when he burst through on goal, but Fulham also didn't feed his intelligent running often enough. Ojo could have brought the visitors level shortly after Brentford went ahead, but you couldn't fault his work-rate as the winger kept on tracking back. He even escorted Watkins deep into Fulham territory for the move that led to the hosts' leveller but he didn't attempt the cynical foul that could have reduced the danger. 6

Stefan Johansen: You almost felt sorry for the Norwegian who, after fighting off both a groin injury and illness to win a place in the starting line-up in the derby, was shoehorned into an almost-number 10 role that appeared more suited to his captain. Johansen's deployment as an advanced playmaker meant the side didn't benefit from his boundless energy and his afternoon was one of frustration as he failed to link effectively with his midfield colleagues as what Jokanovic described as 'a fake striker'.  4

Neeskens Kebano: The Congolese wide man's day mirrored Fulham's. Ecstasy unconfined when he scuffed home Fredericks' pull-back to put the Whites ahead – and torpor once the hosts had regained a footing in the contest. Lively down the flank in the first half he appeared the biggest threat to Brentford's blossoming hopes but faded badly once the Bees assumed control. 6

Substitutes:

Rui Fonte (on for Kebano, 63): All of Jokanovic's changes seemed late and odd – especially after Odoi's early bath meant Fulham had to go for it so soon after losing parity. The Portuguese forward was asked to play right wing, a role where he looks distinctly uncomfortable, but he gave it everything and produced one lovely turn to work space into the box to go with a beautiful ball behind the Brentford back line but you felt he would have been more effective as the main forward. 5

Luca de la Torre (on for Johansen, 77): Jokanovic showed a lot of faith in the Texan midfielder when he threw him on with the Whites behind. He buzzed around intelligently and never stopped showing for the ball but had few options ahead of him with only nine outfield team-mates to find. This wasn't the ideal introduction to the intensity of a local derby, but the American teenager will have learnt an awful lot from the experience. 5

Jordan Graham (on for Ojo, 86): A thankless task for the Wolves loanee, who was brought on just after Watkins had given Brentford a two-goal lead. This was our first senior sighting of Graham since he was given a brief outing at Burton and he looked eager to impress, showing energy in covering every blade of grass, as well as delivering a dangerous cross that Fonte could have made more of. You were left wondering what impact he might have had earlier.

Fulham boss reveals the reason behind disappointing derby day defeat

Fulham suffered the ignominy of derby day defeat on Saturday afternoon as they fell to a 3-1 defeat to Brentford, with defeat leaving Fulham toiling in the bottom half of the table.

Neeskens Kebano had put the Cottagers ahead, before a mistake from goalkeeper David Button against his old side allowed Sergi Canos to fire in an equaliser from the edge of the area.

Goals from Romaine Sawyers and Ollie Watkins sandwiched a Denis Odoi red card, ensuring the points and the bragging right remained at Griffin Park.

Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic has come under heavy criticism in recent weeks, and derby defeat will not have helped the Serb's cause.

Jokanovic blamed defeat on a slow start to the second half.

"We didn't show a killer instinct today," reflected the Fulham boss to the club's official site.

"It was complicated after we became one player less but we tried to show a reaction.

"We found many problems after the two situations at the start of the second half."

The Verdict

Fulham's start to the season has been nothing short of woeful, and Jokanovic needs to start digging out results if his side are to challenge for a playoff spot this season.

The Cottagers controlled the game for half an hour at Griffin Park before Canos' equaliser, with Brentford largely controlling proceedings from this point on.

Fulham are in desperate need of a striker in January, with Jokanovic forced to play central midfielder Stefan Johansen in a false nine role at Griffin Park.

January could be the difference between the manager keeping and losing his job, and he must deal well in the window to find the men capable of turning their season around.

Roy Hodgson: I want to leave Crystal Palace with the same memories I had at Fulham and West Brom

Roy Hodgson says Crystal Palace have given themselves a mountain to climb to escape relegation

Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson. Photo: Getty Images

He has masterminded more than one survival mission in his career, but Roy Hodgson says leading to Crystal Palace could be his greatest escape yet.

The Eagles boss has previous experience when it comes to keeping a team in the Premier League, having guided both Fulham and West Brom to survival after taking charge during the season.

But he says that given the position Palace are coming from, keeping the Eagles up this season will require a big effort.

"Yes it probably would, funnily enough," he said when asked if this would be his "greatest escape".

"At West Brom, they were certainly heading for the relegation zone when I arrived, but we took 19 points from 12 games to not only avoid the relegation zone, but we shot up and finished 12th.

"At Fulham they were doing badly before I came and after four games, they were doing a damn sight worse after losing all four.

"But we had a spell there where we had to pull ourselves out of it, and that was a great escape.

"But this one, the seven games and zero points; that is probably as big a shot in the foot as you are ever going to get in the Premier League."

However, he said that even if Palace survive this season, he would not want to compare the feeling with the pride he had in what he achieved at Fulham and West Brom.

"Nothing would detract from the wonderful memories I had there at Fulham and the same at West Brom, albeit not quite the same escape," he said.

"My real hope though is that one day I will be able to leave Crystal Palace with the same type of feeling for the club and the job I was able to do as I have with Fulham and West Bromwich Albion."

Sorry - I don't see his ability in question and I definitely don't think his future should be or is firmly under question - half baked article from a half baked journo. All he would have had to do after the last two games (prior to Brentford) was to watch this board to know we at the club back him and the mood was very positive. This journo doesn't get to dictate how I view Slavisa or Slavisa's ability to do a good job for this club. Bugger off 'Football league world'.
