REPORT: Barnsley 1-3 Fulham

The 10 men Reds fell to defeat in the Sky Bet Championship as Fulham's late show took all three points back to West London.

Barnsley began the game on the front foot, pressing Fulham high and getting the fans right behind them.

Just three minutes into the match saw a great layoff from Kieffer Moore, making his first Oakwell start, perfectly into the path of Stevie Mallan 30 yards out, whose great first touch allowed him space to bend an effort towards the top right-hand corner which saw Marcus Bettinelli have to stretch and tip behind the post for a corner.

Whilst the Reds were pressing well, they were creating good breaks without truly profiting.

On 15 minutes, Fulham were given a free-kick 30 yards from goal and it was Stefan Johansen who sent the resulting shot well wide.

Eight minutes later and a Moore flicked header from Dimitri Cavare's throw-in dropped onto the roof of the net.

But the goal the Reds deserved came on the half hour mark, and it was a first for the club for Liam Lindsay.

He was on hand from a wicked Mallan corner to score low into the bottom corner at the second attempt after an initial save by the 'keeper's legs.

Just a minute later and it could have been two with Tom Bradshaw through on goal and about to strike inside the box when Ryan Fredericks intercepted last minute and cleared.

Adam Hammill and Dimitri Cavare both entered the referee's notebook, earning yellow cards for reckless tackles as Fulham looked to hit back before half time.

Hammill then saw a dipping volley from the edge of the box saved by Bettinelli.

But right before half time the Reds were reduced to 10 men when Cavare, after being fouled himself reacted by pushing Johansen, forcing the referee to show him a second yellow card before the red.

HALF TIME: Barnsley 1-0 Fulham

Dani Pinillos made his Reds debut replacing Bradshaw at half time.

Fulham equalised in the 50th minute when Sessegnon fired in low beyond Adam Davies after an initial shot had struck the post.

Lindsay was next into the busy referee's book, after pulling back Lucas Piazon on halfway. It was all Fulham by now and looking a matter of time until they took the lead.

On 58 minutes the Reds showed some fight with Hammill leading the charge forward, but after some uncertainty in defence, Fulham eventually cleared their lines.

Paul Heckingbottom replaced Hammill with the back-from-injury Ryan Hedges on the 65th minute.

As the supporters remembered Patrick Cryne on 66 minutes, the players responded, forcing consecutive corners but the Fulham backline held firm.

With just over 10 minutes remaining, Ryan Hedges set off on a trademark run towards the box beating men, but his powerful shot as he approached the box was turned away by the 'keeper.

Davies was then thrust into action, diving low to his left to turn behind a Fulham effort. It was end to end and looking unlikely to finish 1-1.

81 minutes on the clock and Hecky made his final change, with the hard-working Moore replaced by Mamadou Thiam.

With five minutes left to play, the visitors went close through Kevin McDonald who curled an effort just over the bar from the edge of the box.

But in the third minute of five added at the end of the game, Fulham scored a disputed winner.

A cross was headed straight at Davies who turned it up into the air, the ball fell and bounced around the goal-line allowing the Reds 'keeper to claim, but the goal was given by the linesman.

And it was game over a minute later when Fulham hit the Reds on the break, a cross by Kamara was missed by Lindsay and Sessegnon was there to tap into an empty net for 1-3.

FULL TIME: Barnsley 1-3 Fulham

Reds XI: Davies; Cavare, Pearson, Lindsay, Yiadom; Hammill (Hedges 65), Gardner, Mallan, Moncur; Moore (Thiam 86), Bradshaw (Pinillos 46).

Barnsley 1-3 Fulham

Ryan Sessegnon has scored 11 goals in 32 games for Fulham this season

Promotion-chasing Fulham scored twice in second-half added time to beat 10-man Barnsley at Oakwell.

The Tykes led when Liam Lindsay turned in from a corner, but Fulham dominated after Dimitri Cavare's second booking for a push on Stefan Johansen.

Ryan Sessegnon fired in the rebound after Ryan Fredericks' shot came back off the post early in the second half.

Kevin McDonald stabbed in from close range to put Fulham ahead, before Sessegnon's second goal sealed the win.

arnsley paid tribute to former owner Patrick Cryne, who died of cancer aged 66 on Monday, with a pre-match minute of silence and a round of applause in the 66th minute.

The Tykes had looked on course for a first win in four games when Lindsay scored the opener in controversial fashion, Fulham keeper Marcus Bettinelli being booked after protesting about an apparent obstruction in the build-up to the goal.

Cavare could have no complaints about his sending-off, reacting badly to Johansen's poor challenge and pushing the midfielder into Tykes team-mate Stevie Mallan.

Paul Heckingbottom's side stayed strong in defence until the closing stages, but McDonald and Sessegnon's late strikes left them still only two points above the relegation zone.

Fulham, meanwhile, climbed to sixth after a fourth successive win in the league.

Barnsley boss Paul Heckingbottom told BBC Radio Sheffield:
"The performance in the first half was first class, and it was for most of the second half with 10 men.

"He [Dimitri Cavare] let everyone down and the pleasing thing for me is before I got in, apparently he was told that by the players as well.

"We've got to have trustworthy players in our team. When we recruit players they have to be trustworthy, they need to know what we're about."

Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic told BBC Radio London:
"We showed a great level of desire, we showed ambition, we showed great spirit.

"We did not play well in the first 45 minutes, we didn't adapt ourselves way to a not especially good field.

"The team pushed strong, tried, and we found at the end of the game a way to score two goals."

Head Coach Reaction

Slaviša Jokanović praised his squad for fighting back to claim all three points at Oakwell.

Fulham went down to a Liam Lindsay goal in the first half, but a Ryan Sessegnon strike and two stoppage time goals ensured the Whites went home happy.

When the Head Coach was asked if his side were worried heading into the half-time break, he responded with a smile. "Nervous? We are always nervous," Jokanović said. "This is part of football.

"We started a little bit nervous," he continued. "We didn't play with enough pace, and they pressed us very hard. After that we tried to play a little bit more direct."

But a sending off for Dimitri Cavare on the stroke of half-time changed the game. When questioned on whether this might have tilted things in Fulham's favour, Jokanović acknowledged that "the second yellow card was an important moment for my team.

"In the second half of the game we played with more patience, moved the ball very well and fortunately we scored the goal early," the Head Coach said, referring to Fulham's spirited start to the second half.

"We also tried to look to the bench to try and find some kind of solution. And then, in injury time, we scored two goals more."

When asked about Matt Targett's debut, the Head Coach was very enthusiastic. "It was great," Jokanović said.

"He's a fast player with a very good left foot. He helped us when we tried to be more aggressive on the pitch. He's only had three of four training sessions with us. He still needs a little bit of time to adjust himself. He's a player with Premier League experience; he did a great job for us today and I can expect he still can be even better."

This victory put the Whites in the Play-Off positions, but Jokanović refused to look too far ahead. "We are only thinking about the next game, how to win that game, and if that's successful, then we'll only be thinking about the next game after Forest," the Head Coach said, emphasising the squad's incremental approach.

"We are going step by step," he continued. "We have good momentum, we can be satisfied, but we haven't done anything. We still must be focused and concentrated in our work. Taking it step by step—this is our job."

"This doesn't guarantee us anything. We need to keep going. We need to focus and push hard in training. If we are in the top six at the end of the season, only then is when you can say whether or not it was a success for us.

"This is our fourth league win in a row," Jokanović pointed out. But the Head Coach still urged his team to remain focused. "We were always thinking about how to win the game," he said.

"This is the best thing you can think about right now."

Make sure you're at the Cottage next Saturday as we aim to make it five straight league wins when Nottingham Forest come to town.

Few days left.. Fulham would be silly not to secure this last-ditch transfer business

Fulham are the form team in the Championship over the last ten games with Slavisa Jokanovic's men now just outside the play-offs.

Many expected a big season from the Cottagers but it hadn't materialised in the first few months. However, things have really picked up since December and Fulham are now firmly in the hunt for promotion.

It was a similar story last season, where they ended the season in style and everyone connected with the club will be confident of securing another top six finish.

Although, a few new signings to bring in that extra bit of quality could be pivotal if Fulham are going to have a chance of returning to the Premier League.

Like many in the Championship, the Londoners could do with another striker, whilst a centre-back would also be welcome.

Here we look at two targets that Fulham should bring in before the deadline.

Kortney Hause

Fulham didn't have much success with Jordan Graham arriving from Wolves on loan but that shouldn't put them off going for his teammate Kortney Hause.

The former England U21 international is a fine defender but hasn't had the opportunity to play because of the form of those in front of him.

With Wolves now out of the cup, it's hard to envisage Hause playing again this season as he is probably sixth in the pecking order for Nuno Espirito Santo.

That prompted speculation earlier in the month that Middlesbrough and Millwall were interested in the former Gillingham man but Fulham should make a move.

Hause is quick, strong and also decent enough on the ball meaning he will suit the way Jokanovic wants to play.

It's an area the Whites aren't that strong in and Hause would add more depth and quality to the squad.

Dwight Gayle

This is the dream signing for Fulham but it can't come at the cost of Tom Cairney leaving which may make the deal unlikely.

Nevertheless, Gayle is exactly what Fulham need and would score goals for fun in this team.

The former Palace striker has proven himself as a fine player at this level and would excel in a team that creates chances and plays like the Cottagers do.

A deal won't come about until Newcastle secure a new striker themselves but that is looking very likely to happen in the coming days and when it does Fulham should pounce.

Barnsley 1-3 Fulham: Player ratings as Fulham move into the play-off places

The 17-year-old wonderkid bagged his tenth and 11th of the season - here's how we rated the side

Ryan Sessegnon's tenth and eleventh goals of the season and a Kevin McDonald last gasp goal meant that Fulham took moved into the Play-off places with a 3-1 win over Barnsley.

From a squad that was missing Tom Cairney, who didn't travel with the side, Slavisa Jokanovic made no changes to the one that thumped Burton 6-0 last weekend, opting to keep Denis Odoi in the XI ahead of new loanee Matt Targett.

Barnsley took the lead when Lindsay poked the ball home after a brilliant Marcus Bettinelli reaction kept out the first effort - it looked like a foul on the stopper but the referee wasn't interested.

However, they ended the first half with ten men after Dimitri Cavare's moment of madess, who, after being fouled by Stefan Johansen, pushed the Fulham man in the back to earn his second yellow to take an early bath.

Fulham got that equaliser after the break when Ryan Fredericks slalomed into the box, crashing the ball against the post only for it to bounce to Sessegnon, who tucked home his tenth of the season.

And a last minute McDonald goal, who somehow got the ball over the line, while a Sessegnon tap-in, ensured the Whites moved into the play-off places.

Here's how we rated the side:

Bettinelli 6: Struggled with his kicking in the first half but made a few decent stops. Had very little to do in the second half.

Fredericks 7: Quite a few wayward passes in the first half and didn't look the same threat going forward. Great run into the box to set up the equaliser.

Kalas 6: Sloppy on the ball, Moore caused him all sorts of problems in the first period. Like Ream, looked more confident on the ball in the second 45.

Ream 6: Some sloppy moments and lapses of concentration from the American today. Gave a much more assured second half performance.

Odoi 5: Didn't have the best of first halves and struggled on and off the ball and was replaced by Targett at half time.

Norwood 5: Wanted to get on the ball but overhit his passes. Got on the ball a lot in the second half as he tried to make something happen.

Johansen 6: Looked full of energy but didn't do much in the first half. Tried to get on the ball more in the second but looked to have worn himself out.

McDonald 6: Did a decent job of mopping up in the middle. Continued that into the second half as Barnsley looked to break after Fulham committed men forward. A lot of sloppy passes from the captain today.

Fonte 6: Was making a lot of runs up top in the first half and was trying to hassle the Barnsley defence. Had a great second half and really caused the centre backs problems with his link up play.

Piazon 6: Tried to make things happen with a few nice touches but no end product. Was subbed in the 60th minute for Kebano.

R Sessegnon 8: Was a threat down the left but a few heavy touches meant he wasn't able to utilise the positions he found himself in. Right place, right time again to score the equaliser.

Subs -

Targett 6: Attacked and attacked down the left and looked like the full back the side have needed.

Kamara 5: Didn't do too much when he was brought on.

Kebano 6: Linked up well with Targett down the left and was unlucky not to stick the ball in the top bin.

Ryan Sessegnon gives Tottenham two more reasons to sign him from Fulham

Barnsley 1 – Fulham 3

There were a handful of matches in the Championship on Saturday as the FA Cup 4th round took place.

Perhaps the most eye-catching result came at Oakwell, where Barnsley were beaten 3-1 by Fulham.

Liam Lindsay fored Barnsley into the lead just after the half hour. But the hosts had Dimitri Cavare sent off just before the break.

Early in the second half Fulham levelled through 17-year-old England upstart Ryan Sessegnon.

Kevin McDonald put Fulham ahead in the 90th minute, before Sessegnon scored a third in injury time to settle the match.

Ryan Sessegnon is on fire

Is there a more sought-after teenager in England than Ryan Sessegnon?

In his last seven matches, Sessegnon has scored 7 goals and chipped in with 2 assists.

That's simply incredible.

How long can Fulham hold onto their starlet?

Tottenham & Ryan Sessegnon

If any Premier League team is set to sign Ryan Sessegnon, Tottenham seem to be at the front of the queue.

During the January window reports have spread that Spurs are looking to agree a deal for Sessegnon this January.

But rather than bringing the youngster to Tottenham now, Spurs are happy to leave Sessegnon at Fulham on loan until the end of the season.

That's the same approach Spurs took when they signed Dele Alli from the MK Dons.

Will it prove successful?

Sessegnon double lifts Fulham into play-off places
by Sarah on January 27, 2018

For 45 minutes, Slavisa Jokanovic's scowl said it all. Fulham had the perfect opportunity to leapfrog their promotion rivals – who were either in FA Cup action or seen their league fixtures postponed – at beleaguered Barnsley, who had mustered just one win in thirteen games, but the Whites struggled to match the Tykes' desire and intensity as their hosts sought to put in a performance to honour the memory of their inspirational chairman Patrick Cryne, whose sad death from cancer was announced earlier this week.

It was Paul Heckingbottom's men who made all the running in the first period – setting the tempo from the off by winning the loose balls and looking ambitious in possession. Kieffer Moore, making his Oakwell debut after signing from Ipswich, made an immediate impression with a perfectly weighted pass for Stevie Mallan, who followed a fine first touch with a curling effort from fully thirty yards that Marcus Bettinelli did well to get his fingertips too. Moore than headed a long throw from Dmitri Cavare just over – and the visiting defence looked far from reassuring.

It eventually caved in just after the hour mark when slack marking at a set play allowed Liam Lindsay two chances to score from close range. Bettinelli saved brilliantly with his feet initially as the ball seemed to squirm towards goal off Lindsay's hand, but was blocked off by George Moncur as he tried to repel the Scottish centre back's follow-up. The Fulham goalkeeper was booked for his protests – with Ryan Fredericks also mounting his own protestations. It might have been two moments later when Tom Bradshaw burst clear, but Fredericks' rapid recovery snuffed out the danger.

Fulham's brightest moments came in the form of Ryan Sessegnon's rampaging running. The teenager thought he'd won a penalty on the cusp of half-time when he was flattened by Cavare in full flow, but referee Andy Davies adjudged the foul to have been committed outside the box – much to Fulham's frustration. The game turned moments later when Cavare, who had gone into the book for that overzealous challenge, reacted to a late tackle from Stefan Johansen by pushing over the midfielder – and earning himself an early bath.

Jokanovic laid onto his charges at half-time and sent on Southampton loanee Matt Targett for his Fulham debut in place of Denis Odoi. It took just four minutes for the Londoners to level matters. Fredericks stormed in the Barnsley box, nutmegging two defenders along the way, and lashed a powerful shot against the near post – but Sessegnon was on hand to gobble up the rebound from inside the six-yard box.

The visitors then struggled to test Davies consistently enough as Barnsley's ten men sought to cling on for a point. Neeskens Kebano, who replaced Lucas Piazon, curled an effort just over the bar after fine link-up play between him and Targett before Kevin McDonald's snapshot from 20 yards flew narrowly wide. The home side were disciplined in defence but still carried a threat on the break as illustrated by substitute Ryan Hedges, who rode a succession of Fulham challenges, to race through on goal but Bettinelli pulled off an excellent reaction save.

The match swung from end-to-end in an incredibly open final ten minutes with Kamara seeing a header palmed away by Davies and McDonald fashioning a fine chance for himself on the turn before shooting over – but the Scottish midfielder was to prove Fulham's matchwinner after an old-fashioned goalmouth scramble in the second minute of stoppage time. Fredericks' deep cross was met at the far post by Kebano and, although Davies got a hand to his header, the ball ballooned up and two Barnsley defenders failed to clear it off the line. Kamara's instinctive volley was parried by the goalkeeper – only for McDonald to prod home from barely a yard out.

The Whites made sure of the three points with a clinical counter-attack in the final minute of added time. Kebano galloped into space down the right and kept his composure to centre for the unmarked Sessegnon to slip his eleventh goal of the season into the unguarded net. This come-from-behind victory meant the Whites had picked up maximum points from their January programme and moved into the top six for the first team this season.

Everything Slavisa Jokanovic said in his post Barnsley press conference - including Tom Cairney update

The head coach explained why Tom Cairney didn't travel and is looking to take it game by game

Here's everything Slavisa Jokanovic had to say in his post match press conference after his side beat Barnsley 3-1.
Nervous you wouldn't get the win?

"Nervous? we are always nervous, this is part of football."
Did red card have any impact?

"Definitely, it can be more important moment of the game.

"We started the game nervously, we didn't find enough pace on the ball and they press us strong.

"They score one goal and it's probably a foul, it isn't important but they insist and try one, two, three times to core the goal and we didn't adapt ourselves or find best way to play football.

"After we try to play behind them and try play more direct, definitely this second yellow was important moment for my team.

"With this, second part of the game we played patient, moved the ball and fortunately we scored the goal early and expect we try move the bench and find a solution.

"Fortunately we scored two more goals."

Was goal a foul?

"It's less important now, we won the game, it's our fourth in a row and we think about win the game and this is what we can think about.

"In the rules, some books say when you touch the player or keeper in the six yard box this is a foul, at the end we have situation where Bettinelli cannot move, if it's a foul or not is less important for this moment.

"it can be a mistake or not, but it's not more important during the game."
Still got hopes of automatic?

"No, we are thinking of next game and to try win, if we are successful we will think of next game afterwards and step by step we are in good momentum.

"We can be satisfied but we haven't won anything at the moment and must be focused on our work and try make it our job step by step."
Been a great run of form

"Not important, we arrive in the top six last season in last few games.

"Nobody guaranteed us nothing and we can keep going and be focused, work hard and push well in training and try win the game.

"If we are in top six at end of the season, that can be a good success."
More in?

"I don't know."
Targett's debut?

"It was great, he has a very good left foot and when we try be more aggressive we put him on the pitch.

"This player only has three of four training with us, he needs time to adapt, he's a player with Premier League experience and he made great job for us today and I expect he can be better."
Cairney didn't travel?

"I spoke with him yesterday, he's unhappy with this situation he has with the knee, I try force him but he wasn't available to work with us so I didn't bring him today.

"I had plan to bring him on bench but I expect he will be available for next game."

Barnsley 1-3 Fulham: Whites secure victory after two stoppage-time goals

Kevin McDonald and Ryan Sessegnon both scored in time added-on as Fulham clinched their sixth win in seven Sky Bet Championship matches by defeating 10-man Barnsley 3-1 at Oakwell.

The Cottagers came into the match on the back of a six-match unbeaten streak in the second tier but they fell behind just after the half hour though Liam Lindsay's scrappy goal.

Sessegnon levelled just after the break following Dimitri Cavare's senseless red card on the stroke of half-time and the visitors snatched all three points at the death.

It was cruel luck on the Tykes, who remain two points above the drop zone, while Fulham are into the top six after clinching a fourth straight league win.

Barnsley were the better team in the first half though and their opener just after the half hour-mark was little more than they deserved up to that point.

A corner led to a goalmouth scramble, where Fulham goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli made an initial save - but Lindsay was on hand to bundle the ball home after 31 minutes.

Before that the hosts had good openings through Stephen Mallan and George Moncur. The former forced Bettinelli into beating the ball away from an early effort from range while Moncur's shot after good interlinking play was blocked by team-mate Kieffer Moore.

Just before the break, Barnsley were reduced to 10 men. Cavare - who had been booked only minutes earlier for a trip on Sessegnon - was shown a second yellow card and sent off after shoving Johansen rather needlessly in the back of the head after being fouled.

The visitors came out of the traps quickly in the second half and after 49 minutes they were level. Ryan Fredericks did brilliantly to beat two men inside the box and although he was denied by the post, the rebound was pounced on Sessegnon to net his 10th goal of the campaign.

With 25 minutes to go, substitute Neeskens Kebano went close to putting the visiting side in front, cutting in from the left and then firing inches over the bar.

Fulham were to have the final word as McDonald bundled the ball home in scrappy fashion in the second minute of injury time and Sessegnon then added gloss to the scoreline in the fifth minute of injury time when he turned in Kebano's cross on the counter-attack.

The managers

Paul Heckingbottom: "They say you get what you deserve - we didn't deserve to win. Lots of things I was really pleased with and that's what we're going to focus on. I'm really pleased with lots of individuals and the team as a group. There's always things we can be better at.

"We know how good Fulham are, everyone is finding that out now in this league. There's reasons why they scored. Forget that third goal - that was us trying to get an equaliser in the dying seconds.

"Before that I couldn't see them scoring. If it was it was going to be something from range. It was just unfortunate we couldn't get the win."

Slavisa Jokanovic: "We didn't find enough pace in the ball, they pressed us very strong. We didn't adapt ourselves, we didn't find the best way to play.

"They scored one goal - it was probably a foul. In the rules some books say when you touch the keeper in the six-yard box this is a foul - in the end it's a situation where Marcus Bettinelli can't move.

"We arrived last season in the top six and played (in the) play-offs but nobody is guaranteed anything. We need to keep going and be focused and push hard."

Tom Cairney: Fulham's Slavisa Jokanovic would be 'surprised' if midfielder leaves club

Tom Cairney has scored just once in 18 games this season, after finding the net 13 times last campaign

Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic says he would be "really surprised" if Tom Cairney is sold in January.

Midfielder Cairney was left out of the squad which beat Barnsley on Saturday as he continues his rehabilitation for a knee injury.

The 27-year-old Scotland international has been linked with a move to Premier League side West Ham.

"I don't have any information because I don't want to sell him," Jokanovic told BBC Radio London.

"I spoke yesterday (Friday) with him and he wasn't available for training. I tried to push him on the bench but he didn't feel comfortable for this role."

Fulham's 3-1 victory over Barnsley on Saturday was their fourth successive league win and moved them up to sixth in the Championship table.

Jokanovic handed a debut to on-loan Southampton left-back Matt Targett from the bench, but feels his side can challenge for promotion even if he is unable to make further signings.

"It's a question about if you are capable of winning something important or for the challenge," he said.

"I used today our latest signing for the last 45 minutes, he showed a very good left foot, showed his quality, he has Premier League experience and today did a great job for us.

"With more options it's easier to be successful and this is the only reason in some way I am fighting for some signings."

Sending off was crucial, says Jokanovic
by Dan on January 27, 2018

Slavisa Jokanovic admitted that the sending off of Barnsley full-back Dmitri Cavare was the turning point as Fulham came from behind to win at Oakwell and move in the Championship play-offs.

Jokanovic was disappointed that his side didn't begin with the same intensity as they had started with when the Whites thrashed Burton Albion last weekend – and the Fulham boss felt his team didn't deal effectively with the home side's consistent pressing high up the field. He told his post-match press conference:

We started a little bit nervous. We didn't play with enough pace, and they pressed us very hard. After that we tried to play a little bit more direct.

The Serbian head coach was certain that Cavare's sending off – for a mad moment of retaliation on Stefan Johansen – dramatically changed the nature of a contest that Barnsley had dominated until just before the break.

The second yellow card was an important moment for my team. You can say it was the most important moment of the match. In the second half of the game we played with more patience, moved the ball very well and fortunately we scored the goal early. We also tried to look to the bench to try and find some kind of solution. And then, in injury time, we scored two goals more.

Jokanovic was full of praise for Matt Targett, who came on as a half-time substitute to make his Fulham debut and helped the Whites to their fourth win of the month,

It was great, He's a fast player with a very good left foot. He helped us when we tried to be more aggressive on the pitch. He's only had three of four training sessions with us. He still needs a little bit of time to adjust himself. He's a player with Premier League experience; he did a great job for us today and I can expect he still can be even better.

Jokanovic played down any joyfulness at finally breaking into the top six – insisting that his side must keep their hands down and remain focused on the next fixture.

We are only thinking about the next game, how to win that game, and if that's successful, then we'll only be thinking about the next game after Forest. We are going step by step. We have good momentum, we can be satisfied, but we haven't done anything. We still must be focused and concentrated in our work. Taking it step by step – this is our job.

This doesn't guarantee us anything. We need to keep going. We need to focus and push hard in training. If we are in the top six at the end of the season, only then is when you can say whether or not it was a success for us. This is our fourth league win in a row. We were always thinking about how to win the game. This is the best thing you can think about right now

Fulham boss explains Tom Cairney's absence from Barnsley trip amid interest from West ham

The midfielder has struggled with a knee injury for much of this season

Following his side's late 3-1 win over Barnsley Fulham manager Slavisa Jokanovic has said Tom Cairney was absent from the squad due to his knee issues.

Rumours emerged overnight that the creative midfielder wanted a move to West Ham and that the Hammers were prepared to launch a £15m bid.

It was then revealed that Cairney had not made the trip to Oakwell but Jokanovic said the issue arose on Friday.

The Serbian said: "I spoke with him yesterday, he's unhappy with this situation he has with the knee, I try force him but he wasn't available to work with us so I didn't bring him today.

"I had plan to bring him on bench but I expect he will be available for next game."

The Cottagers remain in strong position to keep the Scotland international after he signed a contract extension until 2021 last summer and the club are adamant no key players will be leaving this month.

That came amid interest from Newcastle United as Slavisa Jokanovic's side are believed to have knocked back a £20m bid.

Earlier in the window it was reported that West Brom made an approach for the player but a formal bid never materialised.

Jokanovic: Cairney absence down to injury
by Dan on January 27, 2018

Slavisa Jokanovic said that Tom Cairney's absence from Fulham's win over Barnsley this afternoon was down to his troublesome knee injury – and not the result of rumoured interest from West Ham United.

The Fulham head coach insisted that Cairney remained part of his plans and that the club were not entertaining selling any of any of their key players during the January transfer window. Reports last night suggested that the Fulham captain was keen on joining the Premier League outfit, but, after the Scottish international signed a contract extension keeping him at Craven Cottage until 2021 and rebuffed £20m interest from Newcastle last year, it would take a significant increased Hammers' offer for the Whites to change their stance.

Following Fulham's 3-1 win at Oakwell that lifted the Londoners into the Championship play-off positions for the first time this season, Jokanovic told the press:

I don't have any information because I don't want to sell him. I expect him to be with us. I would be really surprised if he leaves.

I spoke with him yesterday, he's unhappy with this situation he has with the knee, I try force him but he wasn't available to work with us so I didn't bring him today. I had plan to bring him on bench but I expect he will be available for next game.

Fulham's playmaker has made just eighteen appearances this season after picking up a knee injury during pre-season. The former Blackburn midfielder, named in the PFA Championship team of the year after a superb season last year when the Whites narrowly missed out on the play-off final, has made 111 appearances for Fulham since moving to Craven Cottage in August 2015, scoring 22 goals and laying on 21 assists.

Fulham ready to tie down Fredericks
by Dan on January 27, 2018

Fulham are ready to exercise their year-long contract extension option on in-form Ryan Fredericks ending Premier League interest in the full back, according to the Daily Mirror.

The 25 year-old, who added two assists in this afternoon's come-from behind victory at Barnsley to the two goals he made against Burton last weekend, has apparently been monitored by the likes of Stoke City, Swansea City and Southampton as he current deal expires at the end of the season. But Fredericks and his representatives have been locked in talks over a new deal and the former Bristol City full-back has insisted he remains happy at Craven Cottage and wants to help the Whites return to the Premier League.

Tonight's Mirror report says that the Cottagers have rebuffed interest from the Saints and is the clearest indication yet that the former Tottenham academy graduate, who has made 95 appearances for the Whites, will be remaining with Fulham.

Barnsley 1-3 Fulham Six Things: fortuitous Whites

Rarely can receiving an elbow in the back of one's head be considered the perfect solution to a problem, but that was the case for Stefan Johansen and Fulham on Saturday afternoon. They were in grave danger of a first league defeat since mid-December after they fell behind at Oakwell through Liam Lindsey's goal, but after Dimitri Cavare's ill-judged attack on Stefan Johansen, the tide turned in a 3-1 win. Here's six things from the game.

Barnsley's bright first half

The match was preceded by an emotional tribute to former Barnsley owner Patrick Cryne, who had sadly passed away that week. Fitting, the sense of togetherness he had fostered did not desert the fans, nor the players, who produced a high-octane first half display. As soon as Fulham got beyond the half-way line, they were met by a cavalry of red shirts. Every opening Barnsley created, including an early long-ranger from Stevie Mallan that stung the palms of Marcus Bettinelli, came within a few seconds of the turnover of possession.

Static Whites

The away side played into Barnsley's hands by giving the ball away so cheaply, not helped by the lack of movement from front man Rui Fonte and others behind him. They fell behind when Tomas Kalas clumsily diverted Mallan's deep corner to the far post and though Bettinelli kept out his teammate, Matty Pearson's obstruction stopped him keeping out Lindsay's follow-up.

The game-changers

The Tykes had some luck that their goal was not ruled out and the game was going well: until, that was, the first minute of injury time. Cavare decided to spontaneously elbow Johansen when the ball was out of play and his stupidity meant Barnsley would be defending their slender lead with 10 men. That advantage lasted just three minutes into the second period, when Ryan Fredericks ended a rampaging run through a crowd of players by hitting the post, leaving namesake Sessegnon to gobble up the rebound.

Barnsley's brave resistance

The youngster's leveller hinted at instant dominance from Fulham, but instead Barnsley fought valiantly on. Midfielder Gary Gardner covered every blade of grass to protect centre-backs Lindsay and Matty Pearson, who cleared every ball that came their way in a dogged defensive display. For a half-hour spell, Fulham's best effort was a speculative effort from Neeskens Kebano, who curled over after a clever back-heel from fellow substitute Matt Targett.

Feed Federicks, Fulham!

Fulham used Targett and Kebano on the left side the most often in that second half, yet it was play down the right through Ryan Fredericks that proved the most productive. The athletic full-back targeted advanced areas as soon as he received the ball and having been instrumental in creating the first goal, he was also key to the second. Fredericks crossed to the back-post and after goalkeeper Adam Davies failed to hold onto Kebano's header, the resultant aerial goal-line melee saw Kevin McDonald scramble home.

Tough times for the Tykes

Sessegnon added a 95th-minute third to compound the misery for Barnsley. The nine-men in their side that didn't think this to be WWE nor a game of hot potato deserved at least a point for their brave efforts in adversity. Instead, defeat leaves them vulnerable, with four relegation rivals in action on Tuesday. As the club faces a deeply emotional time off the field, they have plenty to protect on it.

Fulham complete the turnaround

After the Cottagers began November with a 2-0 defeat at Wolves to drop 17th, few would have thought they would end January as high as sixth, but that is a sign of how quickly things can change in football. They have scored 31 goals in that timeframe – nine more than any other side – and Sessegnon continues to relish a more advanced role. Fulham deserve credit for their form overall, but it's hard to escape the feeling that their performance at Oakwell has left room for improvement.

Fulham boss happier with win than top six spot after Barnsley success

Fulham manager Slavisa Jokanovic has declared himself happier with the three points than a place in the Sky Bet Championship top six after his side beat Barnsley 3-1 at Oakwell.

The Whites were not in the game during the first half and a defeat looked possible until Barnsley defender Dimitri Cavare's sending off just before the break. Fulham were better in the second half and a brace from Ryan Sessegnon along with a goal for Kevin McDonald ensured that Jokanovic's men left South Yorkshire with the three points.

The win saw Fulham move into the play-off places but manager Jokanovic admitted that getting the three points is all that matters at this stage of the season.

"We are only focussing on the next game" the Fulham boss told The72 in the post-match press conference.

"We need to take things step-by-step."

When speaking about his side's move into the top six, Jokanovic added "It's not important.

"We are not guaranteed anything and we need to keep going and be focussed in training to help win games.

"Being in the top six is only important at the end of the season."

Fulham offered little in attack during the first half of the match at Oakwell but were brighter in the second period. Overall, The Whites boss Jokanovic was pleased with the performance from his side.

Jokanovic added "We were a little bit nervous and didn't get enough pace on the ball in the first half.

"The second yellow card (for Cavare) was a very important moment for my team.

"In the second half, we were patient and we moved the ball around well.

"We scored the equalising goal early but we had to wait until injury time to score two more goals."

Fulham are back in action next Saturday when Nottingham Forest are the visitors to Craven Cottage.

Fulham line up Luke Freeman if they lose Tom Cairney as QPR midfielder tops Craven Cottage wishlist

Fulham star Tom Cairney is attracting interest from West Ham and West Brom
They are drawing up plans if they lose their £15million-rated star player
Freeman has been an ever-present for QPR this season, making 30 appearances

Fulham are eyeing QPR's £4million-rated midfielder Luke Freeman as a replacement for Scotland international Tom Cairney if he leaves Craven Cottage this week.

Cairney is attracting interest from West Ham and West Brom and although Fulham are reluctant to lose their £15million skipper, they have drawn up contingency plans in case they receive an offer which they can't refuse.

Freeman has been a virtual ever-present for QPR this season, making 30 appearances, scoring three goals and providing 10 assists.

Rangers will be equally loathed to lose one of their star men, as they attempt to avoid being pulled into the Championship relegation battle.

Cairney meanwhile, having missed the start of the season with a knee problem, has been central to Fulham's climb into Championship play-off contention.

However he was not in the squad for their 3-1 win at Barnsley on Saturday, leading to further speculation about his future.

West Ham told to double £15m Cairney bid

West Ham must pay £30million to seal the signing of Fulham attacking midfielder Tom Cairney by next Wednesday, according to the Sun.

The newspaper claim that Fulham have set the huge asking price on Scot Cairney, 27, after rejecting the Hammers' £15million bid for him.

The Sun report that manager David Moyes was convinced that West Ham's offer would be enough to land the creative front after "doing his homework" on the player.

It is said that Fulham regard Cairney as central to their bid to secure promotion back to the Premier League.

He has made 18 appearances in the league for the Londoners this season after overcoming a knee problem suffered at the start of the campaign but was a notable absentee from their 3-1 win at Barnsley yesterday (Saturday).

Good move for West Ham?
Cairney is a mighty fine Championship player who looks ready to make the step up to the top flight. His stats for this season do not measure up to his 2016-17 ones, when he scored 12 times and assisted 11 more goals in league matches alone. But he is a very capable operator who can combine the play and create chances for others and, while his lack of Premier League experience would be the only concern, Cairney has made strides in recent seasons.

Likely to happen?
Not at £30million it won't. But don't rule out a transfer as Cairney's absence from the Fulham team yesterday was quite telling. If he is agitating for a late window move, it could happen but there will need to be some smart negotiating from David Sullivan to make it happen.
