Käit makes immediate impact at Ross County
by Dan on February 5, 2018

One of the lesser heralded deadline day moves saw Fulham's highly-rated teenage Estonian midfielder Mattias Käit join Ross County on loan until the end of the season.

The 19 year-old has suffered somewhat from the sheer volume of quality midfielders on Fulham's books, with Tom Cairney, Ollie Norwood, Kevin McDonald and Stefan Johansen all established as first-team regulars and the likes of Tayo Edun and Luca de la Torre having caught Slavisa Jokanovic's eye as promising youngsters. Käit did make the bench as an unused substitute earlier in the season and, whilst becoming an underrated performer for Peter Grant's under 23 side has become a regular in the Estonian midfield at international level.

Käit already has twelve senior Estonian caps to his name and has already scored four times for his country and Owen Coyle, currently trying to lift the Staggies away from foot of the Scottish Premiership, considered his capture of the young central midfielder a real coup:

Mattias is a talented young player who is already a full international for Estonia. I'm delighted to bring him to the club and would like to thank all at Fulham FC for making the deal possible.

Käit wasted no time in making an impact north of the border as he played the full ninety minutes at Dundee on Saturday and helped County record their first win in thirteen matches and move to within three points of Hamilton in the battle for survival. Coyle's men did it in style – winning 4-1 – and Käit produced a lovely pass to create the fourth goal for substitute Chow as the visitors tasted victory for the first time since November.

Not bad for the young man's senior debut.

Attend Family Faith Football ahead of Bolton Wanderers v Fulham this Saturday

Fans can now book their place on Saturday's Family, Faith, Football focus group which will be held ahead of Wanderers' Sky Bet Championship clash with Fulham this weekend.

This special get together will take place in the Reflections Restaurant in the Whites Hotel from 2pm and is an all age pre-match event which is football focused with expert panellists and lots of fun activities.

A few years ago, Club Chaplain Phil Mason carried out some research, asking the players what was important within their lives.

Out of the all the answers that were given, the top three were family, faith and football and these three words have become a motto for the club over the years.

The words have been used by football management over the time as part of the motivation for players and even appeared on the wall just outside the home changing area before reaching the tunnel.

The pre-match event meanwhile uses these three themes to explore some of the important things in life and some of the lessons we can learn, often illustrated by the game of football.

The latest session is entitled "Memorabilia" and tickets are free, but booking is essential.

Fans are encouraged to wear their retro Bolton shirts for the event, alongside bringing any exciting pieces of memorabilia to share with their fellow fans.

For more information or to book your place, please email [email protected].

Ream: Everything's Clicking

Tim Ream was pleased to see Fulham's patient approach to Saturday's match bear fruit.

The Whites saw off Nottingham Forest 2-0 courtesy of goals from Lucas Piazon and Stefan Johansen, with the team refusing to panic despite not making the breakthrough until midway through the second half.

"That's been our game," Ream said. "We know during this run that we can score goals, and it's just a matter of being patient and moving the ball and waiting for an opening or a mistake.

"They made those two mistakes and we're punishing teams right now when they do that.

"There's always things we can clean up and do better, but to come away with a clean sheet, two goals, three points, and moving up a place in the table, there's not much you can complain about."

In the last eight outings, Fulham have dropped just two points to really establish us among the promotion contenders.

"Everything's just clicking right now," he stated. "We're doing good things on both sides of the ball, defensively and in attack.

"We're putting the ball in the back of the net, we weren't doing that early in the season and we were conceding some sloppy goals.

"We've tightened up quite a bit at the back and we're finishing teams off, so it's a combination of those two things.

"We've not changed anything, we've not done anything different, we've stuck with the same style of possession football and it's just been a matter of conceding less and really finishing our chances.

"We're so focused on the here and now, this run we're on, staying in the Play-Offs and trying to push for that second spot."

Loan watch: Winning home debut for Targett

It was a positive weekend for Saints' loanees, with four victories from five across the Championship, League Two and the Belgian Pro League.

Beginning closest to home, Matt Targett made a winning home debut for new club Fulham; the full-back impressed in his side's convincing 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest before being substituted for Denis Odoi in second-half stoppage time.

The result saw Saints' FA Cup Third-Round opponents climb above Bristol City into fifth and into the play-off places.

At the other end of the table, Sam Gallagher featured for the full 90 minutes as Birmingham City continued their strong recent form by beating nine-man Sheffield Wednesday 3-1 at Hillsbrough.

Three first-half goals from David Davis and Jota (2) mean that the Blues have now collected 10 points from a possible 15 since the turn of the year to pull clear of the relegation zone.

Elsewhere in the division, Harrison Reed's Norwich consolidated their position in mid-table with a 1-0 success over Middlesbrough at Carrow Road; German midfielder Tom Trybull secured the points with a long-range drive on the stroke of half time.

In League Two, Ryan Seager came off the bench with half an hour to play to help Yeovil to a 2-0 victory over Cambridge at Huish Park.

Across the Channel, Jordy Clasie started Club Brugge's entertaining 3-3 draw with Charleroi in the Belgian Pro League. The Dutch midfielder was substituted on 62 minutes in the meeting between first and second place. Brugge remain nine points clear at the top of the table.

Fulham wonderkid Ryan Sessegnon has been nominated for the PFA Bristol Street Motors EFL Championship Player of the Month award for January.

The king: Ryan Sessegnon (Image: Jordan Mansfield/Getty Images)

His contribution has been a massive part of Fulham's push towards the play-offs, and justifies the interest being shown in him by some of football's big guns.

Sessegnon has been linked with moves to the likes of Manchester United and Tottenham in recent times, but will now be hoping to achieve his Premier League ambitions with the west London side.

He does, however, face tough competition for the gong, going up alongside James Maddison (Norwich), Robert Snodgrass (Aston Villa), Daniel Ayala (Middlesbrough), Steve Morison (Millwall) and former Brentford man Scott Hogan.

Aleksandar Mitrovic turned down Middlesbrough in favour of Fulham

Aleksandar Mitrovic joined Fulham on loan on Deadline Day

Aleksandar Mitrovic turned down late interest from Middlesbrough in favour of a move to Fulham on Deadline Day, Sky Sports News understands.

The striker joined the Whites on loan in a dramatic transfer from Newcastle in the final hour of the transfer window, after a proposed move to former club Anderlecht collapsed.

It is understood Mitrovic was also in talks with fellow Championship side Boro but he says he chose the west London club because of boss Slavisa Jokanovic - a fellow Serbian - and the style of football he plays.

Slavisa Jokanovic was a major factor in Mitrovic's move to the Cottage

"It was a long stressful day but I'm here and I want to be here. I am very happy," he said after joining the club last week.

"There was a lot of clubs but it was Fulham, first of all because of the coach, and then because of the style of football that Fulham play.

"They have a young and good team, and scored a lot of goals this season and last season. For me, they played the best football in the Championship last season and they've continued that this season, so this is one of the reasons why I moved here.

"The manager was a big player and he's a big coach, and he's a big name in Serbia. I talked with him yesterday and a few weeks ago and he told me his plans, and this is the reason I chose Fulham."

Mitrovic came on as a second-half substitute as Fulham moved into the play-off places at the weekend with a 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest at Craven Cottage.

Grant: Ruthlessness Needed

Fulham's Under-23s lost their second match of the week on Friday evening in a 1-0 defeat to top of the table Blackburn Rovers.

"I'm just disappointed," commented Head Coach Peter Grant. "We had opportunities, I thought we started the game quite well but then Blackburn came into it.

"I thought we were very poor in the final third and that's what cost us the game dearly.

"The decision making with the chances we got, we've got to be more ruthless. It doesn't matter what level you play at; you have to put the ball in the back of the net to win games."

Blackburn were gifted the goal as Tayo Edun accidently passed to Blackburn striker Lewis Mansell 21 minutes into the match.

"The goal we lost was a very poor goal, giving away possession in a cheap area playing out from the back.

"We want to play like that and I encourage that, but you can't play blind across your own box.

"That's happened in a couple of games and that is just decision making. I suppose that is part of the learning but it is frustrating because we got ourselves in a great position in the table and the last two games we have picked no points up, and the reason is we've not been good enough in the final third.

"Rob [Atkinson] had a very good chance from a set play, Michael [Elstone] had a couple of good chances, and the delivery in the final third wasn't good enough.

"It doesn't matter what you do in between both boxes, it matters what happens in the final bit and that is the most important thing. We gave a sloppy goal away and we didn't take our chances."

Fulham had gone nine matches unbeaten before this week when they lost 2-1 away at West Brom.

"To be fair I have to give the players credit for the run they went on," Grant said. "But all of a sudden you lose two and you're disappointed.

"That's why they have to take responsibility. We have had four or five boys go out on loan and I think people have to stand up and take their opportunity.

"If they don't they can't blame anyone else. They've been waiting for their opportunity and now they've got to take them.

"There will be plenty of time on the training pitch with the players before we go to Stoke, but the players at times have to take responsibility in what their jobs are.

"The strikers have to score goals and have that movement in the box, the wide players have to create in that final third, the defenders have to defend well.

"That is a daily thing, they can't make the same errors, and that is what cost us dearly in the end."

New signing Mitrovic makes admission Fulham fans will enjoy

Fulham left it until the eleventh hour to make their transfer deadline day swoop for Newcastle's Serbian international striker Aleksandar Mitrovic.

With interest from Anderlecht and doubts over the striking situation at St James' Park, the Cottagers had to be patient and act quickly but they got their man, who made his debut in the 2-0 home win over Nottingham Forest on Saturday afternoon.

That win took Fulham up into fifth, and it was also their fifth straight win. They are full of momentum right now and the arrival of the Serbian international will only boost that.

Sky Sports have reported the two reasons that Mitrovic chose to come to Craven Cottage in the end – Slavisa Jokanovic and the attacking brand of football that the Serb has Fulham playing.

He said: "There was a lot of clubs but it was Fulham, first of all because of the coach, and then because of the style of football that Fulham play.

"For me, they played the best football in the Championship last season and they've continued that this season, so this is one of the reasons why I moved here."

The Verdict

It is little surprise that the opportunity to work alongside his countryman Jokanovic – who will fancy his chances of getting Mitrovic to knuckle down and will also emphasise the importance of playing well in the lead up to the World Cup – was a factor in what is an impressive coup for Fulham.

His words about Fulham's style of play are also revealing. The club have needed a reliable striker for 18 months now and if Mitrovic can get himself into the positions to finish off the chances, he could fire the club into the Premier League.

Journalist reveals surprise Boro transfer interest in international striker

Middlesbrough held a deadline day interest in bringing Aleksandar Mitrovic to the Riverside Stadium from North East rivals Newcastle United before he joined Fulham at the eleventh hour.

That is according to Sky Sports journalist Lyall Thomas, who says that the Serbian international striker was in talks with Boro over a move but plumped for a move to Fulham for two reasons.

The first of those was the opportunity to work under his Serbian compatriot Slavisa Jokanovic and the second was the hugely impressive style of attacking, passing football that the Serb has Fulham playing.

That meant that Tony Pulis, who offloaded forwards Ashley Fletcher and Martin Braithwaite on deadline day, missed out on the frontman to boost his attacking options in the all-important run-in and race for promotion.

The Verdict

Mitrovic would have added something different to Boro's attack but Fulham's need for a frontman has been intense for about 18 months now.

In-form Fulham are finally firing
by Dan on February 5, 2018

Gregor Robertson's piece in today's Times dates Fulham's winter resurgence from when they were beaten 2-0 at Wolverhampton Wanderers back in November. That defeat, that came in the week following the departure of American analytics guru Craig Kline and newspaper revelations about his time at Motspur Park, left the Whites languishing in seventeenth place in the table – with some Fulham fans worried about a battle against the drop.

The turnaround since that fairly lethargic performance against the league's pacesetters has been nothing short of remarkable. Since Molineux, Jokanovic's men have won ten of their last fourteen fixtures – drawing two and tasting defeat only twice. The run mirrors the consistency Fulham found later in the season last term and has seen the Whites surge into fifth in the table, with clear aspirations of moving even higher, as Tim Ream hinted after Saturday's victory over Nottingham Forest.

The form guide looks impressive even when compared to the rest of the Championship's leading lights. Fulham have taken 32 points from their last sixteen league outings – exactly the same as their fellow promotion contenders Derby County and Aston Villa. Perhaps the optimism of progressing even further up the table comes from the fact that both of these sides feature in arguably Fulham's toughest run of the season over the next eight games – a period of the schedule that looks defining for the promotion push.

The key to Fulham's revival as a force at the right end of the table comes from stopping the concession of silly goals. The Whites have strung together three clean sheets in their last four Championship games and remain unbeaten in this calendar year. The rediscovered defensive solidity might have something to do with Jokanovic's decision to replace David Button with Marcus Bettinelli in goal – Fulham have only conceded eight goals in ten games since the academy graduate got back in and he made that remarkable double save at a crucial time with Forest pressing for an equaliser on Saturday.

The Whites have also reshaped their line-up to add defensive diligence during the January window. Matt Targett has the attacking instincts of Scott Malone, who was one of the much lamented summer departures in the early weeks of the season, but also seems solid defensively. The Southampton youngster's arrival on loan has freed up Ryan Sessegnon to be deployed in the left wing position from where he has been terrorising Championship full backs – the teenager's six strikes in January must make him a certainty for the player of the month award.

Sessegnon himself has suggested sides will fear Fulham now that Jokanovic's side have found their fluency. The core of this side – including the likes of Fredericks, Kalas, Ream, McDonald, Johansen and Cairney as well as Sessegnon – already have the experience of going away to the Championship's best sides and turning in exceptional performances. The memory of the way the Whites outclassed Newcastle and Huddersfield last year suggests they won't be overrawed by the trips to Ashton Gate and Pride Park in the next month.

Targett made reference to the confidence in the group following the weekend victory and the fact that the next eight games that see the Whites take on several of their fellow promotion contenders could actually prove beneficial. While Fulham's home form has picked up, Jokanovic's side have long been a formidable proposition on their travels and seem to revel in the opportunities presented when opponents take the attack to them. The Whites went toe-to-toe with Sheffield United at Bramall Lane when the Blades were sweeping all before them and emerged victorious following a pulsating encounter in November.

Fulham's fluent football has returned since the turn of the year, but Jokanovic's charges have yet to hit top gear. The gutsy victories over Millwall, Birmingham City, Middlesbrough and Barnsley weren't exactly pretty but have proven this team's mettle. The Serbian supremo – who seems to have been given a good deal of what he wanted in the January transfer window – now has some interesting options from which to perm his matchday squad. First, he has to decide which of Fulham's six loanees miss out: a decision that will become a lot harder once Sheyi Ojo recovers from injury.

Then there's Fulham's enhanced options in the final third. Floyd Ayite's little cameo at the weekend confirmed that he will be an option out wide after an injury interrupted season to date, whilst Lucas Piazon's swifter-than-expected return from a broken leg is already paying dividends. Jokanovic also has three forwards from which to perm a central striker in his favoured 4-3-3. Rui Fonte is the technical artisan of the three, but the carnage that could be unleashed by pace of Aboubakar Kamara and the power of Aleksandr Mitrovic is a mouthwatering prospect. All the signs point to a very entertaining next few weeks.

Bolton boss Phil Parkinson wants defensive edge against Fulham

PHIL Parkinson wants his defenders to be the standard bearers in Wanderers' survival fight.

Pleased by the rearguard's performance against Bristol City on Friday night, the Whites boss is looking to register back-to-back clean sheets for only the second time this season when free-scoring Fulham come to the Macron this weekend.

After watching a new-look back three of Dorian Dervite, David Wheater and Mark Beevers work well together to keep out one of the Championship's top scorers in Bobby Reid, Parkinson is looking to gee up his defensive unit once again.

Only Wolves have scored more goals than Fulham's 51 this term, 11 of which have come from the highly-rated teenager Ryan Sessegnon.

"Me and Steve Parkin spend a lot of time working with the defenders and telling them that those blocks, last-ditch tackles and clearances can be just as valuable as a goal," he told The Bolton News. "It can give the whole team a lift, as we saw on Friday night.

"The standard of defending against Bristol City was very, very good across the board. And that has to be the example we set now. It has to go into every game we have remaining this season, starting with Fulham."

Dervite put in another encouraging performance to match his man of the match display against Ipswich Town a few weeks ago, and with Reece Burke now back in the fold, Parkinson is happy with the options available.

"Dorian has worked really hard to get back into the team and he did well again the other night," the manager said.

"We've got Reece who can step in there as well - and he'll be itching to get back into the equation, so we are looking quite strong in that respect.

"Beevs and Wheater put in the kind of performance we expect of them against Bristol City but I can't stress enough, that has got to be the norm.

"Other than the start of the season, when the standard of defending wasn't high enough, I think we have defended well. It has given us a chance in games."
