Celebrating The Life of Matthew Fox (Reminder)

Dear all,

Just a quick reminder, that this Friday's game away to Norwich City, will be marked as the 20 year anniversary, since Matthew Fox tragically lost his life away to Gillingham, he was 24.

For some, they lost a son, a brother, an uncle, a cousin, a nephew and a friend, but, they also lost a dedicated and passionate FFC fan. No one should ever go to football and not come home.

To celebrate his life, a Gofund me page was set up to raise money for a flag, to mark the occasion. The original target was around £850.00, however, to date, there has been £2,125.00 raised, with the rest going to Breast Cancer.

If you haven't already donated, you can do so here: https://www.gofundme.com/celebrating-matthew-fox-fulham-fc

This has been an absolute amazing response from everyone, and, the family would like to say a big thank you to those who have donated.

Before the Norwich game, they have invited everyone to join them in the Prince of Wales pub, Prince of Wales Road, where they will be remembering his life.

During the game, a round of applause will be held on the 20th minute, and we'd like everyone to join if, if they can.

Jokanovic wary of in-form Norwich
by Dan on March 30, 2018

Slavisa Jokanovic knows Fulham will need to be at their best if they are to maintain their excellent unbeaten run at Norwich City this afternoon.

The Serbian head coach told his pre-match press conference at Motspur Park that he feels the Canaries and Fulham are similar sides and that Daneil Farke's team will provide a stern test of the Whites' promotion credentials having lost just two of their last fifteen fixtures. Jokanovic feels that both sides are eager to keep possession and that could make for an intriguing contest at Carrow Road:

Norwich is a team who want to have possession, like us,. We're probably going to have this kind of challenge, the challenge of taking on the pressure from their side and try and dominate them with the ball. They are not comfortable off the ball, we are more comfortable with the ball too.

The Fulham coach feels Norwich have plenty of strengths and has highlighted playmaker James Maddison as a player who could soon be gracing the top flight.

They've got a great squad, a great coach who tries to play good football with one of the more important talents in the Championship in [James] Maddison. In the future he's probably going to be an important Premier League player and we must be careful about him, and careful about other parts of the team as there is quality in this side.

We must respect them, and first of all we must respect ourselves and support each other. We must push hard to do everything we can to win the game. They still have the option of fighting for the play-offs and we cannot relax. Norwich is one of the top teams who aren't at the top of the table right now. I always believe we can win the game and I am sure my players are going to push hard to win three points.

Jokanovic also called on Fulham to produce a more complete display than their last outing against QPR, where the Whites surrendered a 2-0 half-time lead to drop points in the west London derby.

We expect we're going to find a better performance than we found last time we competed, We're playing against Norwich, a good team with acceptably good momentum – they lost only two games out of their last 15. We need to be ready to make many good things if we want to come back with the points from Norwich.

Next up: Norwich City (a)
by Dan on March 30, 2018

The Easter weekend might be a time for relaxation and reflection for many, but that certainly doesn't include professional footballers. This time of year has a history of making and breaking seasons – and represents an almost mini-Christmas period, with a couple of testing fixtures in quick succession – and Fulham will be hoping for a successful return to domestic action as they look to get their push for the Premier League back on track after such a disappointing draw with Queens Park Rangers in the west London derby last weekend.

Slavisa Jokanovic was blunt about Fulham's shortcomings in that game and how his side's second half showing, having established a 2-0 lead at half-time, was well short of the standards required. The head coach took his fair share of criticism after that abject second 45 minutes, especially with a baffling double substitution that saw the Whites rhythm further disrupted at a time when Rangers were penning the home side back in their own half, but he remains committed to his own philosophy and belief that Fulham's best chance of winning promotion is in outpassing their opponents in what remains a physically demanding league. Such an approach is borne out by the statistics, with the Whites having completed 8,718 passes in opposition territory this term – more than a thousand more than anyone else in the Championship – and the fewest long balls in the division.

The Serbian knows that this afternoon's opponents, Norwich City, will represent a real test of Fulham's overarching ambitions of returning to the top flight. The prevailing opinion is that second place is now out of reach even the derby disappointment, with a relentless Cardiff City now seven points clear and having a game in hand, and that the Whites will have to endure the drama of the play-offs – where Fulham have a dismal record – for a second season running. Jokanovic is sticking with his mantra of taking everything a game at a time and refusing to look any further than taking on the Canaries this weekend, with Daniel Farke's side vying for recognition alongside the league's top four as one of the Championship's in-form sides.

Jokanovic has already warned his side not to be lulled into a false sense of security ahead of today's encounter by Norwich's lowly position in the table, even suggesting that the Canaries could yet feature in the play-off shake up despite starting the Easter period some ten points off sixth place. That Farke's squad possesses plenty of quality is without doubt, but there is an enduring sense of disappointment around East Anglia after only a couple of wins since February has consigned City to middle of the road mediocrity as we come around to the business end of the campaign.

The Canaries have been badly let down by their form at Carrow Road this season. Where teams at this level like to make their home ground a difficult place to visit and build something of a fortress in such an unpredictable division, Norwich have fallen badly short in that regard. Farke's men have managed just six home league wins this term and have often struggled to carry an offensive threat on their home turf with Nelson Oliveira – Fulham's scourge on the opening day of the season with his late equaliser at Craven Cottage – being singled out by many for not contributing enough goals this year. Some Norwich fans have been vociferous in blaming the board for their current plight, with arguably not enough being done to either supplement or eventually replace both Cameron's Jerome presence and goals in the past two transfer windows.

Farke, a progressive manager whose star doesn't seem to waned despite what has to be considered an underwhelming season, deserves some credit for bringing through a promising clutch of youngsters into the first team this year. He has overseen James Maddison's emergence into a player who could certainly move up a level, with the midfield playmaker contributing thirteen goals and seven assists from an attacking midfield berth as he has needed little time to adapt to the demands of regular Championship football in his first full season at Carrow Road. Farke has also introduced the impressive Jamal Lewis to the senior side at left back, who has flourished in his fourteen first-team outings to date, and only appears to get better with more exposure to senior football.

The former Borussia Dortmund reserve team manager has also enjoyed great success with his recruits from German football. Christoph Zimmerman has enjoyed a commanding campaign at centre back and looks a real steal having arrived from the Dortmund second string on a free transfer back in the summer, whilst Tom Trybull, who also came in for nothing from Den Haag, has added both tenacity and drive to the heart of the Canaries' midfield. When placed alongside the likes of Alex Pritchard, Timm Klose, Grant Hanley and the promising Angus Gunn in goal, it is hard to avoid the feeling that Norwich could have put together a more consistent campaign than the one they have currently managed.

The Canaries are likely to be without forwards Onel Hernandez, who has experienced hamstring trouble over the past week, and a 'jaded' Marley Watkins, whose exertions with Wales in the China Cup on international duty will have to be managed carefully by Farke over the next week or so but the home side will be able to call upon defender Grant Hanley, Oliveira and midfielder Alex Tettey. Hanley is available despite pulling out of the Scotland squad last week, even if Farke admits he will need to 'be careful' not to aggravate the centre half's injury issues any further.

Fulham have no new injury worries after the weekend and Jokanovic's team selection could be interesting again. Tomas Kalas will be pushing for a recall after Denis Odoi's untimely slip against QPR and the Czech centre back will have done his cause no harm by coming through a couple of competitive outings in the Far East at the China Cup, including netting his first international goal against the hosts. The visitors will be hoping Aleskandar Mitrovic can take his own impressive international form – having scored twice against Nigeria at Barnet for Serbia on Tuesday night – back into the domestic arena after a rather anonymous afternoon against Rangers a fortnight ago.

MY FULHAM XI (4-3-3): Bettinelli; Fredericks, Targett, Kalas, Ream; McDonald, Johansen, Cairney; Ayite, R. Sessegnon, Mitrovic. Subs: Button, Christie, Odoi, Norwood, Ojo, Fonte, Kamara.

Slavisa Jokanovic wants Fulham to dominate Norwich City in order to take home three points

Both sides are in good form ahead of this afternoon's tie, and the head coach reckons dominating Norwich is the way forward

Slavisa Jokanovic believes Fulham must try to dominate Norwich City when they face each other this afternoon to extend their unbeaten run to 17 games.

The two sides last met on the opening day of the season and played out a 1-1 draw, and since then Fulham have gone on to mount a promotion charge while Norwich have endured a somewhat inconsistent season.

Now they face each other on the back of the final international break of the season with both sides in good form - Fulham haven't lost in 16 while Norwich have lost just twice in 15 games, and Jokanovic thinks the key to success at Carrow Road is to dominate the Canaries.

He said: "Everyone is fit, we don't have any problems and all the team are ready for the challenge.

"We expect to find tomorrow our better performance than what we found last time when we compete, and we will play against Norwich.

"Norwich are a good team, they are in good momentum and have lost only two games in last 15 matches.

"We need to be ready to make many good things if we want to come back with the points from them.

"They are a team who want to have possession of the ball like us, and probably we are going to find the challenge and the challenge is probably going to be to take off the pressure for their side and try dominate them with the ball.

"They are not comfortable without the ball and we are more comfortable with the ball too, at the end it's team with a great squad and a great coach who tries to play good football with one of the more important talents in the Championship like Maddison.

"In the future he will probably be an important Premier League player and we must take care about him and care about the other part of the team because the quality exists in this side.

"We must respect them, but first of all respect ourselves and support each other and do everything to win the game."

Shoddy journalism, this is global the one he sold.
Watching the ups and downs since 1958, wouldn't have it any other way, what a roller coaster of a club.

Three Players to Watch: Matchday 39 vs. Norwich City
How will Fulham bounce back after the last International break of the season?

So Fulham is back at it after another International Break that nobody really wants. Sure, people want to know who England and other nations are going to pick for the 2018 World Cup, but the games were more for pageantry and distraction than meaningful contests. And sure, it was a joyous occasion to see many Fulham players play for their country, including 17-year old Ryan Sessegnon continuing to make his rapid climb in top-tier football by making his Under-21 International debut. But at the end of the day, nobody in the squad got hurt from these and that is what matters most.

Now the boys have to return to England and travel to Carrow Road to get three points against a week, but still frisky Norwich City side. This comes off the back of losing two out of a possible three points to arch-rivals Queen's Park Rangers just two weeks ago. It has been said here before that Fulham has been due for some bad performances via regression to the mean. But if anything, it is a sign of a club that now knows that they can not afford to be coasting the rest of their way through the season. Many clubs are still chomping at the bit to claim three points from Fulham and are hoping to surpass them in the playoff positions. Until the season is done, this club just cannot rest on their laurels and hope that a promotion place is given to them. They genuinely are going to have to earn it.

To get back on track, Fulham will be facing a Norwich side that has been the pure definition of average. However, with the way the club plays, Norwich are anything but average. In fact, they are almost exact clones of Fulham in that they like to hold on to the ball in possession, they like to play a short passing and carry and dribble game and they genuinely generate a solid 13.0 shots per 90 minutes as a result of it. But with 41 goals, the Canaries are considered one of the most wasteful attacks in the league. Their 47.5 expected goals put them in a more respectable 14th in this category, but that still shouldn't be acceptable for this club considering how they have the resources to be much better. In defense, Norwich is better but only so much that they are barely in the top half in both actual (44) and expected goals (48.3).

What is important for Fulham is to make sure they continue to make Norwich a wasteful side and outperform them in their strengths. With Sessegnon, Aleksander Mitrovic and many more attackers that can score, the good guys should be able to out-man them in a game of styles throughout this match. But if that doesn't take place, Fulham will be in for a rude awakening.

Here are three of Norwich's players to look out for should they be able to spring the upset.

James Maddison

There is no denying that the best thing to happen to Norwich this season has been the growth and development of their 21-year old attacking midfield sensation. And with a few caps with the England Under-21s, the best is surely yet to come for Maddison. It has been an incredible journey for the Coventry-born star as Maddison actually started his professional career with his hometown club, Coventry City.

After making his debut at the start of 2014/15 season, Maddison moved to Norwich on a 3-year deal in the 2016 January transfer window. But after making a return to the Ricoh Arena via a loan spell followed by another such movement to Aberdeen, Maddison can finally consider himself a full-time Canary.

It will be curious to see how much Maddison can further develop whenever he gets better attacking players around him, however. Josh Murphy has been another solid addition to Norwich this season, but Wes Hoolahan and Marley Watkins have combined for just three assists in just over 2,300 league minutes and not a single goal being scored. And it's not like Norwich are THAT bad at creating chances. If anything, their 10.4 chances created and 11.7 successful dribbles per game are both ranked in the top five in the Championship. So the impetus is there, but it would be nice for Norwich to get a player or two that knows how to score goals.

Harrison Reed

Next up is another young player in Norwich's usual XI, except he is actually not one of their own. Instead, Harrison Reed is just here finishing out a loan spell with Southampton. However, the 23-year old is having a fine season in the Championship thanks to over 2,300 league minutes and solid performances as a defensive midfielder.

Along with that, Reed has been playing along Norwich's back three and out at wingback whenever manager Daniel Farke was looking to reconfigure his tactics of late. Whether any of these positions work for Reed, in the long run, is anyone's guess, but it is a positive sign to see a young player being counted upon in so many different positions around the pitch.

It will be curious to see where he goes from here as he has a contract with his parent club that goes into 2021. Will Southampton see if a player that should be in the prime of his career work in the Premier League or is it best for both parties to cut bait and give Reed a shot at more playing time somewhere else?

Grant Hanley
All data from whoscored.com

Lastly, we take a look at a center back who is having a career resurgence since joining Norwich City over the summer. It was just a season ago where it seemed like Hanley's future in the top tiers of English football were being slammed shut. Instead, the Scottish International is having a strong season with the Canaries and has been a mainstay with Timm Klose along Farke's back line. Hanley will never be the mobile ball-playing defender that is required for today's game, but he can do a job in the hard graft parts and use his size to his complete advantage. As long as he's part of a club that can accentuate such strengths, Hanley will be a perfect fit. Though to his credit, Hanley is setting career highs in passing completion percentage and long balls completed per game.
