McDonald: Sessegnon is Fulham's hardest worker

Kevin McDonald has praised team-mate Ryan Sessegnon for his outstanding work ethic after the teenager scored his 15th goal of the season in Fulham's 3-0 victory at Millwall.

The 17-year-old, who won both Championship Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year awards, reacted quickest once again to pounce on keeper Jordan Archer's parry and give the Whites the lead early in the second half at The Den.

McDonald doubled Fulham's lead shortly afterwards with a fierce long-range strike and Aleksandar Mitrović notched his 11th goal in as many matches late on to extend Fulham's unbeaten run to 22 games.

But it was Sessegnon whose name was being sung by the away fans long after the final whistle.

"Sess has been consistent all season," McDonald said. "For such a young kid, he impresses every game. He picks himself up for the big stage.

"He works hard every day in training – probably the one who works hardest. We're happy to have him. How long we'll have him for, I'm not sure, but he's doing well for us just now."

The Scot added: "Sess is just that guy. He's on a wave right now and just continuing in every game. We're proud of him and we're lucky to have him."

The win lifted Fulham back into the automatic promotion places, sitting two points ahead of Cardiff City, who play Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

It is now lucky 13 for Aleksandar Mitrovic

Aleksandar Mitrovic made it 13 goals from 13 games for club and country with another excellent finish on Friday night.

Aleksandar Mitrovic made it 13 goals in his last 13 matches on Friday night.

With two for his country and now 11 in the last 11 for Fulham, the Serbian striker is looking to head off to Russia in great form.

His latest came in a 3-0 victory at Millwall, an excellent second half performance from Mitro and his Fulham teammates brought three goals after the break, with the Newcastle loan forward providing a great finish to round off the scoring.

Fulham are unbeaten in all 15 Aleksandar Mitrovic appearances and indeed are now unbeaten in 22 league matches altogether, going into last night's match Millwall had a 16 game unbeaten run.

Fulham are now back in the automatic promotion spots with a two point advantage over Cardiff, though the Welsh club have two games in hand.

With 11 goals for Fulham and one in the league and one in the League Cup for Newcastle, Aleksandar Mitrovic has 13 goals in 1,397 minutes of club football this season, at an average of a goal every 107 minutes.

BBC Sport:
'McDonald's stunning strike made it two as Fulham came forward frenetically, and Mitrovic sealed it with his 13th goal in 13 games in the closing stages.'

Get West London match ratings:

'Mitrovic 8:

'Cut a lonely figure in the first half as Millwall starved him of service.

'His hold-up play in the second half was fantastic and Millwall really struggled to deal with it.

The 3 players Fulham should move on if promotion is achieved

Fulham are well in the hunt for promotion in the Sky Bet Championship, with the Premier League in the Cottagers' sights.

Slavisa Jokanovic's side have hit form just at the right time heading into the final stage of the season, with Fulham finding themselves in a battle with Cardiff City for the second automatic promotion place.

With Wolves already up, Cardiff have their destiny in their own hands, but Fulham are in contention, and if they fail to clinch a place in the top-two, they will have the play-offs to fall back on.

Jokanovic's side will have learnt a lot from last season's failed play-off attempt, and if they end up missing out on automatic promotion, they will still fancy their chance of securing a Premier League return.

If promotion is achieved, Jokanovic shouldn't have to alter his talented squad too much.

However, some players won't be taken forward, and with that in mind, here is a look at THREE players we are expecting to see leave Craven Cottage if promotion is achieved...

Oliver Norwood

Norwood is at Fulham on-loan from Brighton and Hove Albion, but has found himself behind the likes of Kevin McDonald, Tom Cairney and Stefan Johansen this season.

If promotion is achieved, it is hard to see Jokanovic pursuing a permanent deal.

However, if Fulham find themselves preparing for Championship football again, he could be an option they turn to permanently.

Rui Fonte

Aleksandar Mitrovic is spearheading Fulham's promotion push, with Fonte left to play a sideshow at Craven Cottage.

You'd imagine Jokanovic would want more firepower next year in the Premier League, which could spell the end for Fonte.

Floyd Ayite

Ayite has featured regularly for Fulham this season, but you wonder whether he has Premier League quality.

The likes of Sheyi Ojo and Lucas Piazon could return on-loan from Liverpool and Chelsea, which would leave Fulham overloaded in the wide areas.

Ayite could be a player sacrificed.

Slavisa Jokanovic "proud" of Fulham players after keeping promotion hopes alive

Fulham manager Slavisa Jokanovic has praised his players for producing an impressive second-half display to overcome a tough test away at Millwall.

Two of the country's in-form teams faced off at The Den on Friday night with plenty on the line as the race for promotion to the Premier League heats up.

Following a goalless first half that Millwall edged, Fulham turned on the style after the restart and earned a 3-0 win through goals from Ryan Sessegnon, Kevin McDonald and Aleksandar Mitrovic.

After ending their opponents' unbeaten streak, and extending their own unbeaten run to 22 games in the process, the Cottagers are now up to second place.

"I must be proud about how my team played. The first 45 minutes, Millwall were strong and used their weapons, but we showed we could be solid," Jokanovic told reporters at his post-match press conference. "In the second half, we scored early and moved the ball a bit better.

"We stuck to our style and played a brilliant second 45 minutes. It's not easy to play football in this place. The last time Millwall lost here was in November. We normally trust our style and dominate possession of the ball. We showed great ambition and desire and stuck to our plan. I must be satisfied because my team followed the game plan and played with confidence. We deserved this result.

"I said nothing special. It's important for us to be focused and wait for our moment and it arrived at the right time, then we completely controlled the situation. I trust my players and my team trust me. Sometimes a plan works well, sometimes a plan doesn't work perfectly. They are professional.

"We didn't surprise them and they didn't surprise us. We knew what to expect. They pushed hard - they're a physically strong team. My team showed confidence, solidarity and found a solution. We did a great job."

Cardiff City can claim back second place from Fulham if they win the first of their two games in hand at home to Nottingham Forest on Saturday night.

Fulham star praises Millwall for "best away atmosphere of the season"

Fulham's Kevin McDonald celebrates scoring his side's second goal of the game during the Sky Bet Championship match at the New Den, London.

Fulham midfielder Kevin McDonald spoke of his respect for Millwall's fans after the atmosphere they generated in Friday night's match.

The Lions' 17-match unbeaten run was ended as the west London side scored three times in the second half.

McDonald struck the second goal from the edge of the box.

And he said: "The atmosphere was fantastic. It was the best atmosphere we've had in an away game all season. From the first minute until they got beaten 3-0 they were right behind their team.

"That's fair play to them. It's a hostile place to come, to say the least.

"They stuck behind their team at all times, and I respect that a lot.

"In the second half we were a class above at times. In the first half they had a good few chances. They way they play – respect to them. But once we got the ball down and passed it, we were way ahead of them.

"We knew we would have the opportunities. There is only a certain amount of time you can continue to press. You saw it even at times in the first half when we got the ball down and passed it – we carved them open.

"The second half they are chasing the game. It opened up more and it suited us. We have faith in the way we play."

U18s lose out to Fulham

West Ham United's penultimate U18 game of the season ended in a 1-0 away loss to Fulham this morning.

Steve Potts and Mark Phillips made a few changes following the 5-1 defeat to Chelsea, with U15 Josh Wilson-Esbrand coming in for his full debut at left-back, replacing fellow U15 Jayden Fevrier, whilst Kevin Dalipi, Anouar El Mhassani and Sean Adarkwa came back in and Mason Barrett, Aji Alese and Ben Wells dropped out.

Fulham took the lead just before the half hour mark through their top scorer this season Timmy Abraham, the younger brother of Chelsea striker Tammy, who was signed from Charlton Athletic last summer. Abraham would later be sent off in the second half as West Ham introduced U16 duo Veron Parkes and Keenan Appiah-Forson and first year Emmanuel Longelo, but to no avail.

The final game for the Hammers this campaign sees them play 9th place Aston Villa at Little Heath. A win would see them finish in 9th place themselves, but if they lose they will finish the season in 11th place.

Fulham U18s: Luca Ashby-Hammond; Daniel Martin (c), Scott Armsworth, Zico Asare, Cody Drameh; Sonny Hilton, Ben Davis (Cameron Antwi 89); Sylvester Jasper, Ryan de Havilland, Shawkat Tahir (Jonathan Page 60); Timmy Abraham.

Unused sub – George Wickens (GK)

West Ham United U18s: Joseph Anang; Josh Wilson-Esbrand, Jay Mingi, Kevin Dalipi, Will Greenidge (Veron Parkes 83); Kris Belic, Bernardo Rosa; Anouar El Mhassani (Emmanuel Longelo HT), Louie Watson (Keenan Appiah-Forson 70), Sean Adarkwa; Odysseas Spyrides.

Unused subs – Joshua Okotcha, Serine Sanneh (GK).

3 Replacements For This On Loan Newcastle United Forward Including This West Brom Hitman!

Newcastle United could be set to lose their forward Aleksandar Mitrovic in the summer. The striker is currently on loan at Fulham since moving to London in January. He has bagged 10 goals for the club from Craven Cottage and has helped the cause of promotion for the club by putting them within a point of automatic promotion.

Fulham boss is simply delighted to have him in the team and would love to make his deal permanent. "He made a great job for us," said Jokanovic. "The club took the right decision to bring him to help us. "I don't know what will happen in the future. First of all, he's a Newcastle player, and ahead of him is the World Cup (with Serbia)."

"I know he's really happy with the team, with the club, with the city and for another side, he knows I'm satisfied with the level he offers us. "Everything's open. If you ask me about if I want him with us, yes I want. In realistic life, we're going to see. This job is for another side and not under my control."

It seems that Newcastle could be set to lose him and hence must think of an ideal replacement for him. Here are three players they can look at.

Lewis Grabban
His contract with Bournemouth is set to expire in just over a year and clubs are waiting around to move in for him. The forward was in good form this season before he got down with an unfortunate injury during the winter period. He netted a steady 12 goals in 20 appearances for Sunderland this season while on loan with them. He could be targeted by Newcastle to replace Mitrovic.

Firmin Mubele
The Congolese striker is currently at Stade Rennais and was approached by Newcastle United in the summer but failed to get a move to England. He can also operate as a winger depending upon the requirements of his team and could be a versatile option to add.

Salomon Rondon
West Brom are on the brink of relegation and the club will be losing out on big players including their hitman Salomon Rondon. The striker could be ready to part ways with the club for just £16.5m if they get relegated. Rondon is a proven quantity in the league making him a valuable signing to consider.

Cardiff City 2–1 Nottingham Forest: Gunnarsson fires Bluebirds to another huge win as they reclaim second spot

Attendance: 21,310

Cardiff City sent out another statement of intent to Fulham after picking up another three points at home on Saturday evening.

The Bluebirds sent out another message to Fulham and Aston Villa that they will not be caught without a fight after defeating Nottingham Forest to move back into second place.

Warnock's men took the lead through Sean Morrison but had to show real character again to bounce back after Liam Bridcutt's equaliser. Aron Gunnarsson hooked in the winner with 16 minutes remaining to put the Bluebirds a step closer to the finish line.

The win puts Cardiff one point clear of Fulham with a game in-hand still to play, against Derby County on Tuesday evening. Warnock's men need six points from their last three games to mathematically secure promotion as things stand.

Match Report
Cardiff initially started well wining a corner within the opening minute but it was Forest who managed to create the first real chance.

Joe Ralls won a challenge on the edge of the Cardiff box only for the ball to ricochet through to Joe Lolley and the wide-man almost made it count, firing just over the bar.

Cardiff then took control of the clash but Forest looked solid with five across the midfield, restricting the home side.

And it was the visitors who came close again on the 20-minute mark when Sean Morrison conceded possession sloppily in the Forest half. Liam Bridcutt was the man on the end of the counter attack and he was denied by a very good Neil Etheridge save.

After that opportunity, the Bluebirds really begun to wake up and slowly turn the screw, creating much more going forward.

Aron Gunnarsson was picked out by a Joe Ralls corner and should have done better, but Forest didn't head the warning.

Moment later, Joe Ralls curled in a perfect corner again to find Sean Morrison and the Cardiff skipper times his run to perfection to power a header home from less than six yards.

Morrison came close to a second shortly after when he was picked Ralls from open play this time, but the header curled just wide of the far post.

And that was the last opportunity of the first-half with the Bluebirds taking in a one-goal lead at the break.

The Bluebirds started well in the second-half and they should have doubled their lead within three minutes of the restart.

Aron Gunnarsson did tremndously well to win the ball in midfield and thread it through to Kenneth Zohore and the striker looked to have scored as he dinked the ball over the keeper, but Danny Fox was able to clear it off the line after the post intervened.

And that missed chance would haunt the home side. Forest broke away in response and after Ben Osborn was found in space down the left, he clipped the ball into the unmarked Liam Bridcutt in the middle and the former Leeds midfielder made no mistake, lifting it over Etheridge and into the net.

Cardiff responded well to conceding the equaliser but hey struggled to break down the numbers in the Forest back line and they were regularly reminded of their opposition's ability on the counter attack.

Though, Cardiff kept plugging away and they got their reward. Junior Hoilett whipped a free-kick to the back post and after Sol Bamba's head into the middle, Aron Gunnarsson hooked the ball into the far corner with a stunning finish.

A monumental goal but it was almost wasted when Sol Bamba hooked an awful pass across the face of his own box. Aron Gunnarsson had to initially intervene with a heroic block before Cash headed wide at the back post.

nd that was the last opportunity Forest would get to spoil the party. The Bluebirds back into second and with a game in-hand still to play.

Man of the Match – Aron Gunnarsson

The Icelandic midfielder put in his best performance since returning to injury to steer his team one step closer to promotion.

Gunnarsson won everything in the midfield, put his body on the line and scored the all-important goal. A fine evening's work.

He has struggled a little since returning from a long-term injury, but from this performance, it's clear he's now back up to speed with things and perhaps back to his best.

Good performances elsewhere from Sean Morrison, Joe Ralls and Kenneth Zohore who were all pivotal in this vital win.

Final Word

The pressure was on heading into this one after Fulham sent out a big statement against Millwall on Friday evening.

The nerves around the Cardiff City Stadium reached a real high point when Forest equalised, but credit to this Cardiff City team, they have steel and character in abundance.

hey kept going about their game and got the goal they needed to secure all three points in another huge game.

They still have complete control with a chance to move four clear in their game in-hand against a faltering Derby County on Tuesday night, and that's as good as it gets at this stage in the season.

Cardiff edge Forest to boost promotion push

Sean Morrison and Aron Gunnarsson were on target as Cardiff City banked three precious points in their bid to reach the Premier League.

Cardiff City are closing in on automatic promotion from the Championship after a late 2-1 home win over Nottingham Forest lifted them back into second.

Aron Gunnarsson turned home the winner in the 74th minute to secure a vital triumph that moves Neil Warnock's men a point ahead of Fulham, who have played an additional match.

Forest midfielder Liam Bridcutt had earlier netted at close range to cancel out Sean Morrison's first-half header, but the Bluebirds responded to secure a second successive victory ahead of Tuesday's trip to seventh-placed Derby County.

Should they prevail in that match, Cardiff would then only need a solitary win from their remaining two fixtures against Hull City and Reading to end a four-season absence from the Premier League.

Freddo: Game Of Two Halves

Ryan Fredericks was always confident that Fulham's quality would shine through against Millwall on Friday night.

The hosts enjoyed the better of the opening 45 minutes, but a ruthless second half saw Ryan Sessegnon, Kevin McDonald and Aleksandar Mitrović all net to secure a 3-0 victory.

"It's a massive win," Fredericks told fulhamfc.com. "We knew it was going to be a tough game, and it was. The first 20 minutes were carnage, but we stood up to it.

"It was a game of two halves. We knew that if we rode the wave in the first half then they'd come out tired for the second half and we could play our stuff, the game would open up, and it did. The gameplan fell perfectly into place.

"We watched all the videos with the Gaffer and they start games like a house on fire. Like I say, the first 20 minutes was carnage, but you can't play like that for the full 90.

"We knew that when it opened up we had to show the quality we've got. We knew that we'd create chances, and we did."

Sessegnon scored the crucial opener within 42 seconds of the restart, demonstrating his knack for being in the right place at the right time after Jordan Archer couldn't hold Mitrović's long range effort.

"As soon as the 'keeper parries it, he's always going to be first to the ball," Freddo said of the 17-year-old. "He's always on the move – as soon as Mitro pulled his foot back [to shoot] he was already on his way.

"That's why he's so good and so talented, and such a good player."

A nasty Tim Cahill elbow on Fredericks went unpunished in what was a physical battle in South-East London, but the right-back doesn't mind embracing the rough and tumble side of the game.

"I feel great," he insisted. "I knew it was going to be a tough game, I've played at the Den before so I knew what it was like.

"It's good, solid, proper Championship football, and I don't mind a scrap either!

"Now we just want to get as many points as possible. At this stage of the season it's not so much about performances, it's about getting points.

"We want six points from the next two games to put pressure on Cardiff. If it's not to be that we go straight up, then we'll go again and do our best to win the Play-Offs."
