Three players Fulham should consider to replace West Ham bound Ryan Fredericks

Fredericks is reportedly close to joining West Ham United from Fulham.

Fulham's Ryan Fredericks is set to turn down the Cottagers' offer of a new contract and sign for West Ham United instead, according to Football.London.

Right-back Fredericks set up nine goals en route to promotion via the Championship play-offs this season, and is said to have been courted by a string of Premier League clubs.

However, if the 25-year-old is to walk out on Fulham, their new found riches should ensure it is not the end of the world.

Here are three players they should consider to replace him...

Moritz Bauer (Stoke City)
Signed by Stoke for around £5 million in January, the Austrian impressed despite his side's relegation to the Championship. Fulham could offer the 26-year-old an immediate return, although he admitted earlier this month that he wanted to stay at the Bet365 Stadium regardless of the Potters' fate.

Joel Ward (Crystal Palace)
A veteran of 163 Premier League appearances and out of contract at Crystal Palace, Ward is certainly the most experienced and cost-effective option on this list. However, reports this week claimed he could be ready to commit to the Eagles despite being offered a pay cut - an incentive perhaps for Fulham to move fast.

Luke Ayling (Leeds United)
A player Fulham should know well, given his battles with them for Leeds United, Ayling would probably fancy another stab at top flight football, after being released by Arsenal earlier in his career. However, with a contract until 2021 and key player status at Elland Road, he could be difficult to prise away.

Chelsea set asking price for Fulham target Tomas Kalas — report
The Chelsea defender is done with the Loan Army

Tomáš Kalas, technically Chelsea's longest-serving player, has been on loan at Fulham for the last two years and part of the loan army for the last eight. But the 25-year-old has finally grown tired of that lifestyle and he wants to settle down. His ideal job would be playing either for Chelsea or Fulham in the Premier League. He's not picky.

Fulham on the other hand might be picky. Kalas had two successful loans with the Cottagers, but he did not finish this season as a regular starter — an injury gave Denis Odoi a chance, and the non-loanee kept his spot even after Kalas returned. Odoi's already under contract for next season; are Fulham willing to spend real money on Kalas in this case?

As a newly promoted side, Fulham will need to spend much of their incoming Premier League millions if they are to hold their own next season. But after four years in the Championship, they will be (or should be) watching their pennies carefully as well. The financial gap between the top two divisions is massive, to say the least. It's easy to overspend at the top and pay the price exponentially later.

Kalas revealed earlier this week that Fulham owe Chelsea a certain amount for him already. The agreement between the two neighbors apparently stipulated that at the end of the season, Fulham would have to either pay a loan fee (of an unknown amount) and return Kalas to Chelsea, or pay a transfer fee (of probably a larger unknown amount) and keep the defender.

According to the Mirror (via the Hammyend), that second fee is nice, round £10m. That seems like a reasonable demand for an experienced Championship player who was good enough to be a regular starter for a Premier League-bound side.

Whether or not Fulham see it the same way, indeed whether or not Fulham see a centre-back as an area of priority in their summer buying plans, is something we probably won't know for a few weeks yet. But at least one area of uncertainty has been removed, if the report is true. An asking price has been set for Kalas' services. Now he waits to see if anyone will snap him up and finally discharge him from the loan army.

According to The Mirror, the right back is set to sign a long-term deal at the London Stadium following the expiry of his deal at Fulham.

The task of keeping Fredericks at the club looked to be getting tougher by the day with numerous Premier League clubs thought to be interested.

Newcastle United were the latest club to join the race, alongside Crystal Palace who were also keen.

The news will come as a huge blow to the fans at Craven Cottage who were confident they could keep the 25-year-old after securing promotion.
