'They haven't changed much and we might see a similar starting 11': Slavisa Jokanovic says Fulham will draw on FA Cup experience against Tottenham

Harry Kane's hat-trick helped Spurs beat Fulham 3-0 in the FA Cup last season
The striker will again lead the attack when the teams meet at Wembley Stadium
Tottenham did not sign any players in transfer window ahead of new campaign
Tim Ream and Alfie Mawson will not play in defence on Saturday due to injuries

Fulham will draw on their experience of playing Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup last year as they prepare for Saturday's Premier League clash against a largely unchanged team, manager Slavisa Jokanovic said on Thursday.

Harry Kane's hat-trick helped Spurs beat their London rivals 3-0 in February last year, and the striker will again lead the attack when the teams meet at Wembley Stadium.

'We have experience playing against them in the FA Cup a year ago and it wasn't an easy day for us,' Jokanovic told reporters.

'But they haven't changed much and we might see a similar starting 11 for Spurs.'

Spurs, who are preparing to move into their new 62,000-seater stadium, did not sign any players in the close season transfer window.

However, Jokanovic expects a tough start with the pressure on him after a 2-0 opening weekend loss to Crystal Palace.

'This is a tough game ahead of us,' he added. 'But it's a great opportunity for us to test against one of the top teams.

'We are returning to Wembley as a Premier League team. We worked well this week, building our spirit and working on the way we want to play football.'

Jokanovic will be without Tim Ream and Alfie Mawson in defence through injuries, while Denis Odoi is serving a two-game suspension after his red card in the play-off final victory over Aston Villa last season.

Could Fulham star be set for an England call-up?
Fulham forward on Southgate's radar

It is a new era for the England football team. After finishing fourth at the World Cup, boss Gareth Southgate deserves all of the plaudits for allowing his players to take risks and embrace an attacking style of football.

His philosophy of blooding youngsters will stand the team in good stead for the future, after bringing the likes of Harry Maguire and Ruben Loftus-Cheek into the squad that travelled to Russia.

Both players, especially the former excelled at the World Cup and Southgate is understood to be looking at bringing more younger stars into his squad for England's two Uefa Nations League games against Spain and Switzerland.

According to The Telegraph's Matt Law Southgate has his eye on a number of talented players, one of which includes Fulham's Ryan Sessegnon, who was instrumental for his side last season.

His possible inclusion could motivate a tweak in system for Southgate, who set up with a 5-3-1-1 for the majority of matches at the World Cup, with width coming from wing backs.

While Sessegnon started his career at left back, he has gradually progressed further up the pitch where he has proved to be a serious goal threat and assist machine, in a similar career transition to that of Gareth Bale.

He racked up 16 goals and eight assists for Fulham last term in the Championship and is expected to have a similar impact in the Premier League.

With Southgate also thought to be eyeing Liverpool's Joe Gomez, Manchester City's Phil Foden and Borussia Dortmund striker Jadon Sancho, Sessegnon could become an integral part of what could gradually develop into a world class future England team.

Premier League predictions: Lawro v singer Tom Grennan

Two of the Premier League's new managers go head to head on Saturday when Maurizio Sarri's Chelsea host Unai Emery's Arsenal - but who will come out on top?

BBC Sport football expert Mark Lawrenson was not impressed by the Gunners in their defeat by Manchester City last weekend, saying: "I may have to revise my prediction that Arsenal will finish fourth.

"It was a little bit of a mish-mash of a performance, the kind of thing I have seen before where a manager is new to the Premier League and does not really grasp what it is all about.

"City are the best team in the country - there is no argument about that - but Arsenal let them have so much time on the ball, they were asking for trouble. I just wonder what Emery might change for his side's trip to Stamford Bridge?"

Lawro is making predictions for all 380 top-flight matches this season, against a variety of guests.

This week's guest is singer Tom Grennan, who was on the books of Luton Town, Northampton and Stevenage as a youngster.

LAWRO'S PREDICTIONS

Tottenham v Fulham

I don't think Tottenham will be worried about playing at Wembley for a bit longer than planned, and they put in a pretty solid performance to beat Newcastle last week.

Fulham face another London club, after losing at home to Crystal Palace last time out,. Things do not get any easier for them this weekend.

My worry about Fulham is that they are easy on the eye and play nice football, but where are their goals going to come from? It is going to be very interesting to see how they get on in the next few weeks.

Lawro's prediction: 2-0

Tom's prediction: 2-0

Mawson set for return to full training

Alfie Mawson is expected to start training with the Fulham squad next Tuesday.

Former Brentford defender Mawson, back in west London after a recent £15m move to Fulham from Swansea, has been recovering from a knee problem.

Tim Ream is also unavailable, leaving Fulham short of centre-backs for their opening matches of the Premier League campaign.

However, Whites boss Slavisa Jokanovic expects Mawson to step up his comeback next week and possibly be ready for selection early next month.

"Mawson will start working with us next Tuesday," Jokanovic said.

"We have some problems at centre-back. Tim didn't work with us this week and also we're still waiting for Mawson to start working with us."

Mido to appear at Tottenham vs Fulham

Former Tottenham Hotspur striker and Egypt international Ahmed Hossam 'Mido' will appear at the half time interval of Tottenham vs Fulham this weekend at Wembley.

Mido played in North London from 2005 to 2007, and scored 20 goals in 63 appearances at the club. During that time period, Tottenham's highest league finish was 5th place which they achieved both in 2005-06 and 2006-07, which happened to be the two full seasons Mido spent there.

The forthcoming match is Tottenham's second of the season, but their first at their temporary home of Wembley Stadium. As a result, the match will serve as a ceremony to celebrate the 2018 World Cup stars at the club.

While Mido never played at a World Cup, this summer saw several Tottenham players impress including France's winning captain Hugo Lloris, Golden Boot winner Harry Kane and South Korean winger Heung Min Son.

Tottenham will also take the opportunity to commemorate Alan Gilzean who passed away last month. Gilzean scored 133 goals in 439 Spurs appearances.

The match will take place on Saturday 18th of August at 4PM Egyptian time, in the first London derby in the league between Fulham and Tottenham since 2014.

Fulham team news: Joe Bryan fit for Spurs test but Jokanovic faces defensive headache

The head coach delivered an injury update ahead of the trip to take on Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley

Fulham are facing yet another injury headache as they prepare to face Tottenham Hotspur, but will have Joe Bryan for the tie.

The left back was forced off in the 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace on the opening day with an ankle injury, but has recovered in time to slot straight back into left back to take on Spurs at Wembley Stadium.

That solves one injury problem for Slavisa Jokanovic but he faces more in the centre back positions, with Tim Ream having not recovered from a knock that ruled him out of the Palace defeat.

Alfie Mawson won't start working with the Fulham team until next Tuesday either, while Denis Odoi serves the final game of his suspension, meaning Jokanovic will have to call upon Calum Chambers and Maxime Le Marchand once more.

Meanwhile, Floyd Ayite has also started working with the team having missed the entirety of pre-season with a knock, but he won't be ready for some while as he gets up to speed with the team.

(Image: Justin Setterfield/Getty Images)

Speaking ahead of the Spurs game, Jokanovic said: "Right now we have some problems with the centre back, Tim Ream didn't start working this week and Alfie Mawson too is still waiting to work with us.

"Denis Odoi is suspended, positive news is Floyd Ayite start working with us but still needs to build up his condition.

"Joe Bryan is available to play."

Slavisa Jokanovic urges Ryan Sessegnon to drive Fulham's top-flight return

• Teenager is 'one of the longest-serving players in this team'
• Fulham prepare for Wembley return to face Tottenham

Slavisa Jokanovic believes Fulham can lean on the prodigiously talented Ryan Sessegnon as they seek to adjust to life back in the Premier League, with the teenager's presence in the side providing some continuity after a summer of lavish transfer spending.

Sessegnon made his first top‑flight appearance in the 2-0 home defeat by Crystal Palace last weekend and will confront Tottenham Hotspur, one of the elite clubs who has closely monitored his eye-catching progress over recent seasons, at Wembley on Saturday.

The 18-year-old, who could be fast-tracked into Gareth Southgate's England set-up for the autumn internationals, attracted tentative interest from rivals over the summer but Fulham never considered selling their prize asset before their return to the top division.

"I must be happy [he's still here] because Ryan Sessegnon is one of the most important players from last season," said Jokanovic, who saw the club spend more than £100m on 12 new players in the summer window. Eight of those signings played a part last Saturday.

"We trust he can help us in this challenge that is immediately ahead of us. He's one of the longest-serving players to play in this team, so he is one man who doesn't give you so many problems [in terms of integration].

"Sometimes you don't know if he is on the pitch because you don't hear so many times his voice but his work is really good. He always pushes really hard, he wants to improve himself, his teammates and the team. I don't remember any mistakes. All of us can make some mistakes during training or in a game but this kid is always focused on trying to improve, trying to learn, trying to adapt himself for each situation."

Fulham will travel to Wembley, where they won the play-off final in May, with defensive concerns. Denis Odoi is completing a two-match ban, while neither Tim Ream nor Alfie Mawson has been able to train as yet after injury problems. The latter, a £15m signing from Swansea City, will join the group for the first time on Tuesday.

André-Frank Zambo Aguissa, secured from Marseille as one of a quintet of new arrivals on deadline day, has trained and could be involved, and Joe Bryan is fit despite limping off on Saturday. Timothy Fosu-Mensah, loaned from Manchester United, may also feature.

"We need time, like all the teams, because it's not easy," said Jokanovic, who remains in talks with the club over a new contract. "We must be patient and let the new players adjust. I believe we signed quality players but, without any work in our style or with their teammates, it's so complicated for them. Step by step we expect we will improve."

Can Fulham maintain their style of play in the Premier League?
What can the past tell us about Fulham's future?

So along with giving you the whole coverage with regards to Fulham football club, I'd figure I'd start a weekly feature that will hopefully answer one of the questions that are in a good chunk of the minds of Fulham supporters everywhere.

So with that in mind, I'd figure to take a look at what might happen if Fulham were to follow the trends of recently promoted sides past to determine if they will be able to use the same attacking brand of football like they did under the previous two seasons. Watching an entertaining team is always fun. Watching that same entertaining team win all the time, like, oh I don't know, almost 23 times in a row, is even more fun. You know what's not fun? Losing.

And unfortunately, Fulham will be dealing with much more than usual now that they are in the Premier League. This isn't to say that the club are not good enough more so than it was downright inevitable that the quality of competition was going to be much tougher. Look no further than this week's opponents in Tottenham as an example of a team that will almost surely not allow Fulham to play the way they would like to play. Which leads us to the question that is on most supporters minds?

Can Fulham really be able to play the exact same way like they did in order for them to stay up in England's top flight? For just the sake of this exercise, I have only based "style of play" off of two statistical categories alone: percentage of time of possession and percentage of completed passes. Barring exceptions, the team that keeps and knows what to do with the ball at their feet usually is the better attacking and more eye-catching side. For both statistics, I have compared promoted sides from 2013/14 to 2016/17 and saw how they performed the season afterwards to see if there was a definitive trend.

All data from whoscored.com

We first start with possession and, for the most part, the better teams in that category tend to correlate with how well they performed in the Premier League within this group. That being said, of the 10 promoted Championship Clubs during this four-year span that kept the ball 50% or more of the time, only one of them went on to do so the first year they came up towards the Premier League. That would be Eddie Howe's Bournemouth side that had the ball 56.4% of the time during their Championship title run in 2014/15. That being said, the average possession from recently promoted teams tends to drop 6.5 percentage points when transitioning from one league to the other.

Meanwhile, Slavisa Jokanovic's 2017/18 team put up a whopping 57.8% possession this past Championship season. If you were to base that data point off of what that 12-team sample trendline expects, Fulham are expected to hold onto the ball 49.1% of the time this season. While a complete downgrade, that would put them ninth-best if the Premier League operates the same as it did last campaign.

All data from whoscored.com

Along with needing time on the ball, questions will arise about whether Fulham can pass their way out of more trouble in the Premier League. After all, the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City and Spurs are considered the kings of pressing football and that would surely mean more turnovers and less mental fortitude than what was seen in the Championship.

Like possession percentages, teams that perform well in passing are better adjusted for what's to come in the Premier League. Fortunately, the decrease in passing ability is not as bad as ball retention as there has been an average drop of 2.5 percentage points in that department. That said, the differences between outcome and average in passing is much greater than the fluctuation you see from the average in possession.

Thus, for what it is worth, this chart has predicted that Fulham will go from being a team that completed passes 83.1% of the time to 78.3% of the time. That is still quite a respectable number and that would have seen them being the best passing team outside of the top six in English football last season.

For those looking for a laugh, guess the one club that has generated the two worst possession and passing stats among all recently promoted sides in the last four campaign and stayed in line with how poor they were in those two categories the season afterwards. Go on! I'm not giving you anymore hints...

Now all of this data comes with a caveat. First, ONLY 12 FOOTBALL CLUBS ARE IN THIS DATASET!!! Always remember to fear the sample size monsters. Unfortunately, name any football stats company and 2013/14 is almost guaranteed to be the furthest season in which you can find detailed statistics for the Championship. Now within those small sample sizes, the correlations (also known as how closely related last season's data is to the next season's data, which is the square root of R2) for passing and possession are both above 67%, which is pretty darn good considering the circumstances.

Along with that, not all promoted sides are created equal with how they handle their senior team and managerial staff. Of all these teams were looking at, four of the twelve went on to lose their manager after their first year in the Premier League and five of those twelve went straight back down to the Championship. Surely, Slavisa will be back at the Cottage by the time 2019/20 rolls around.

So yeah, there's my attempt explaining what will happen to Fulham as an attacking unit. While it is not using a "football man" to determine this answer, it is an attempt that will at least start some conversation.

So what are your thoughts on this, and what do you think the next talking point should be for next week? Don't be afraid to share your thoughts on the comment section below.

Spurred On

It's back to Wembley on Saturday for Fulham as we head across the capital to take on Spurs in their temporary home of the national stadium. Things aren't going massively well off the pitch for Tottenham at the minute with no new faces through the door leading to a lot of disgruntled fans and then the delay in the move to their new stadium announced this week. A lot of the Spurs fans I know have stated that they don't like playing at Wembley as it doesn't feel like home and we all saw how slowly they started there last season. They struggled to put games to bed at Wembley against teams like ourselves until the second half of the season, which might give us a bit of hope going into Saturday's fixture.

I've heard that Spurs have only sold as few as 25,000 tickets (this isn't confirmed) for this game as so many fans are frustrated about the stadium situation, and season ticket holders have had to essentially re-buy the Fulham tickets after they were refunded from their original purchase. It's all a bit strange and so many Spurs fans just don't want to go back to Wembley. What is certain is that the atmosphere will be nothing like what it was back in May when 85,000 Villa and Fulham fans took the place over. This could play to Fulham's advantage, especially if we start the game well which will lead to more disappointment for the Spurs fans, which can easily leak into the performance on the pitch.

On the other hand, we are undoubtedly taking on one of the league's best sides in Tottenham Hotspur. They have a team filled with World Cup stars and players who have been consistently good over the past few seasons. There has been a lot of talk about Harry Kane's August goal drought, but Fulham are very good at letting teams and players break unwanted records against them (I still have nightmares of Sunderland away last season). Last Saturday we had 7 new faces in the Fulham line-up so it's understandable that we haven't quite gelled yet while Spurs have the same team as last season which, while it's frustrating for their fans, at least means that there will be no danger of them not being comfortable which each other on the pitch.

Despite the result on Saturday, I think Fulham should stick with the same line up against Spurs. Changing things too much after one game for me will only be detrimental to any progress as well as possibly wrecking the confidence of those who are dropped so early. There has been a lot of debate about the keeper situation but I think that's a position where you need consistency more than most. If Fabri is dropped after 90 minutes then it sends a message out to the rest of the team that any mistakes could cost you your position on the team and I don't believe that is the sort of atmosphere you want around the squad. I am not saying that mistakes should be over looked, but I'm saying that deal with it on the training pitch in order to create an atmosphere where players can thrive. Obviously if a player is clearly out of their depth then don't play them, but I don't think that was the case for any of our players on Saturday. When some of the other new boys like Anguissa and Mawson are fit and ready then they should be integrated into the team, but I'd rather that they were fit and able first.

With the difference in stature of the two clubs I reckon we can go to Wembley on Saturday with very little pressure on us which should allow us to play with a real sense of freedom. I think the playing relationship between Seri and Cairney already looked exceptional on Saturday so I expect it to be even better as the weeks go on. It will be interesting to see how they stand up against the likes of Erikson, Ali and Dier.

One thing that is certain, however, is that the supply up to Mitro needs to be far better than it was against Palace. We had so many opportunities to create chances but our big Serbian was let down time and time again by the crossing of various players. For me, it is that element of last weeks game that should have been the focus this week at Motspur Park. We will find out on Saturday if this has been the case.

My team- Fabri, Bryan, Chambers, Le Marchand, Christie, McDonald, Cairney, Seri, Sessegnon, Mitrovic, Schurrle

Slavisa Jokanovic refuses to comment on new Fulham deal ahead of Spurs clash

The head coach has a year remaining on his contract at Craven Cottage but won't be drawn into talking about a new deal

Slavisa Jokanovic has refused to comment on speculation surrounding his new contract at Fulham, but is delighted Ryan Sessegnon has remained at the club.

The head coach, who turned 50 today, has one-year left on his deal at Craven Cottage and there has been talk that him and the club have been in discussions over a new deal.

Nothing has come of it so far, but one thing that has happened is the club keeping hold of Sessegnon over the summer despite the numerous links away from the club.

Tony Khan came public in the days leading up to the closure of the transfer window to say that the 18-year-old would not be sold and that Fulham never had any intention of parting with their prized asset.

With it being Jokanovic's birthday, he is hoping the side bring back three points from Tottenham Hotspur as a gift, but wouldn't be drawn into talking over his new deal.

He said: "I don't know if someone is going to bring me some presents but this is life, it isn't full of presents!

"I must keep working, my team must keep working to bring something positive from Wembley.

"I prefer not to talk about my contract, it's a private thing.

"I must be happy (he's still here). Ryan Sessegon is one of the most important players from last season.

"We trust he can help us in this challenge that is immediately ahead of us

"He's one of the longest-serving players to play in this team. This is part of our process.

"At the moment he is in position like last season.

"He is one man who didn't give you so many problems. Sometimes you don't know if he is on the pitch because you don't hear so many times his voice!

"But his work is really good. He always pushes really hard, he wants to improve himself, his team-mates and the team. His sensation is really positive.

"I don't remember any mistakes. All of us can make some mistakes during training or in a game, but this kid is always focused on trying to improve, trying to learn, trying to adapt himself for each situation."

Fosu-Mensah and Mitrovic to start – Strongest 4-3-3 Fulham XI to face Tottenham

Predicted Fulham line-up to face Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League

Fulham began their Premier League campaign with a 0-2 loss at home to Crystal Palace in a game where they would have felt a bit hard done by after creating enough chances to score at least one goal. Manager Slavisa Jokanovic has a talented squad at his disposal with many new players joining the club this summer, so it will some time for the team to gel together and perform well.

Up against Tottenham, the challenge will be tougher and bigger. The Cottagers need to be at their best if they are to stand a chance of getting something out of this weekend's clash and avoid a loss.

Team News
Alfie Mawson and Floyd Ayite are out injured, whereas Tim Ream and Joe Bryan are doubtful to be a part of the squad on Saturday. Meanwhile, Denis Odoi is suspended.
Probable Fulham XI
Manager: Slavisa Jokanovic
Formation: 4-3-3
Fabri (GK)

The experienced Spanish shot-stopper made a vital save to keep the scores level but couldn't do much to stop the two goals they conceded. He will be vital to Fulham this season.
Cyrus Christie (RB)

Christie should start at right-back and hope to perform better this weekend.
Calum Chambers (CB)

The Arsenal loanee was caught on the wrong side for Palace's first goal and he has to do better to retain his manager's faith.
Timothy Fosu-Mensah (CB)

With Joe Bryan doubtful for this weekend, Maxime Le Marchand could move to left-back position and Manchester United loanee Fosu-Mensah could start at right-back.
Maxime Le Marchand (LB)

The versatile defender should play at left-back since Bryan is a doubt.
Kevin McDonald (CDM)

Fulham's main man in central areas to shield the back-four, McDonald should look to put in another good shift and stop the likes of Harry Kane and Dele Alli.
Jean Michael Seri (LCM)

Given that last week was his debut in the Premier League, Seri did decently well. However, he has the potential to do better for Fulham.
Tom Cairney (RCM)

The captain will be rallying his troops to put up a better show against one of the top sides in Europe.
Andre Schurrle (RW)

Schurrle should have won a penalty for his team last around had the referee seen it. Apart from that, the German international was in and out of the game.
Ryan Sessegnon (LW)

The youngster was lively for large parts of the game against Palace but must show more of that to go past a solid Spurs defence.
Aleksandar Mitrovic (ST)

The Serb could have scored at least once last week had it not been for Wayne Hennessey making a fantastic save. He is Fulham's main man and expectations are high after a permanent move this summer.
