Loan Round-Up

Marek Rodák continued his fine form between the sticks as Rotherham United secured an impressive 1-0 win against Derby County.

Tom Lawrence was sent off just before the hour mark and five minutes later Ryan Manning stepped up from the spot to ensure the home side left with the spoils. The Rams boss, Frank Lampard, was sent to the stands late on at the AESSEAL New York Stadium in a win that moves the Millers into 14th.

Tayo Edun was an unused substitute in Ipswich Town's 2-0 defeat at Hull City.

Elsewhere, in the lower leagues, Stephen Humphrys came on as a substitute in Scunthorpe United's 3-2 win over AFC Wimbledon. Josh Morris' first half strikes had The Iron cruising at the break, before Liam Trotter put the hosts back in it. Ike Ugbo's goal gave the insurance they needed and saw Scunthorpe over the line.

Elijah Adebayo couldn't prevent Swindon Town slumping to a 2-1 home defeat to Bury. Luke Woolfenden had The Robins level but Byron Moore's brace lifted Bury into the play-off places. The forward currently has three goals this season in a productive start to the campaign.

Rui Fonte played a part in LOSC Lille's 3-2 away win at Amiens. He was replaced in stoppage time by Loïc Remy after Nicolas Pépé's quick fire hat-trick put Lille in control to move them into third place in Ligue 1.

Marcelo Djalo played the full 90 minutes for Extremadura in their 2-1 home defeat to high-flying Las Palmas.

Lastly, Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson was substituted in the second half as Vendsyssel FF were held to a 1-1 draw by Hobro.

Slavisa Jokanovic on why Fulham wonderkid Harvey Elliott is not ready for the first team yet

The wonderkid trained with the first team in Spain during the international break but Slavisa Jokanovic is keen for him to continue developing

Harvey Elliott looks set to be the next player off the Fulham Academy production line - and Slavisa Jokanovic has been impressed with the 15-year-old during first team training.

The youngster headed out to Spain with the first team during the international break to take part in their warm weather training camp, alongside fellow Academy players Matt O'Riley and Francois Tyrese.

O'Riley, who is 18, has been training with the senior side for the past season having made his debut last year in the Carabao Cup, while Francois started training with them over the pre-season.

Elliott's stint with the first team bears resemblances to Ryan Sessegnon, who also started training with Jokanovic's first team at just 15 before making his mark the following season in the Championship.

Chelsea and Barcelona have all been linked as admirers of the 15-year-old wonderkid, who can't sign a scholarship at the club until he turns 16, but he's already got his first taste of first team football at Fulham, featuring in the 1-0 friendly win over ATK in Murcia.

And while Jokanovic is keen for Elliott to grow both on and off the pitch, he has been impressed with what he has seen so far.

He said: "The kid is talented, I don't treat him like a kid - he showed the quality.

"He's a great project of the football, a huge time is ahead of him and in general it's not question about my opinion, the club believe he can have a great future.

"We try test him and try work a little bit with the senior squad, at the end, personally my sensation is positive but we need to give this player time to grow up, to go in the right way."

Comparisons can definitely be drawn between Sessegnon and Elliott - both started training with the first team at just 15 and both have come through the age groups at the club.

However, in terms of playing style, the pair are completely different according to Jokanovic, although they both have a similar personality in that they trust in their footballing ability.

He added: "No, this guy plays in different position and has different characteristics, different physicality but has a similar personality.

"Both players trust in themselves, the kid is positively arrogant in a positive way - he trusts in himself and he want to show with his body and wants to tell you 'I am a good player and I will show you' and he showed it.

"But after four trainings, it's better not to ask me about him, he needs to go to school and do his homework and work with us and try prepare himself for the future.

"I recommend him to share the energy between both sides, we will take care with him but he can have a future in this profession."

Sorting the defence & coping without Cairney- what Jokanovic needs to address ahead of Watford

Watford are next up for Fulham and there are some things on the head coach's to-do list before then

Fulham head into Saturday's lunchtime kick off with surprise package Watford with a clear idea of what needs improving after their defeat at the hands of Manchester City.

Losing to the champions is no shock - on their day, City are probably one of the best teams in the world, if not the best, but sloppy early mistakes meant that Fulham were never able to get into the game, resulting in a walkover for Pep Guardiola's side.

Next come Watford, who suffered their first defeat of the season on the weekend when Manchester United went to Vicarage Road and came away with a 2-1 victory.

Before the season started, you would've been forgiven for targeting this game as one that the Cottagers would be fairly confident of having a chance of three points, but with the way the season has panned out, this is yet another tough test against a team who have enjoyed a red hot start to their campaign.

Slavisa Jokanovic will have had a further week to prepare his side for the game - here's what he needs to address as Fulham get ready to welcome Watford.

Solidifying the defence

Fulham have conceded 12 goals already this season - the most in the entire Premier League.

And while they've faced both Tottenham Hotspur and City away from home with a new-look back four, it's now mid-way through September and the defence still looks leaky.

Alfie Mawson's return has strengthened the defensive unit, but they're still shipping goals that they shouldn't be and it's a huge concern to Jokanovic, who knows that for all the side's attacking play, if they can't stop conceding goals they won't take three points from games.

He's tinkered with his defence in every game to try and find a solution, but so far that has been in vein, with the side unable to keep a clean sheet having conceded two goals in every game they've played.

Tim Ream's eventual return should help things, but with last year's player of the season suffering with a back injury and with no time scale his return, he can't be relied on to solve things.

It's, perhaps, the most pressing thing for Fulham to sort out at this moment in time.

(Image: Marc Atkins/Getty Images)

How the side cope without Tom Cairney

It's looking unlikely that Cairney will be ready for the visit of Watford as he continues his recovery from an ankle injury, so that means that Jokanovic has to look how his side cope without the midfielder.

He's vital to that midfield three, almost serving as the key stone that allows Jean-Michael Seri to exploit areas of space while enabling the defensive midfielder to hold and mop up counter attacks.

Last season, Fulham were able to cope because of Ollie Norwood, whose similar side of play allowed the side to continue in the same style.

(Image: Dan Istitene/Getty Images)

But this campaign, there isn't a player similar to Cairney.

Kevin McDonald and Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa are both defensive, while Seri and Stefan Johansen are also very similar in their roles as box-to-box midfielders.

Seri has been stunning for the most part since signing, but he isn't able to play to Cairney role like the skipper plays it, so if Fulham are to be without him for another week Jokanovic needs to find a way to make sure that the midfield trio is still able to pull the strings for his side.

Deciding what to do with Joe Bryan

Bryan was brought in to be the side's left back this season, but so far he's only made three appearances and hasn't featured since the 4-2 win over Burnley at the back end of August.

Maxime Le Marchand played at left back in the 2-2 draw at Brighton & Hove Albion, while Ryan Sessegnon was the man selected in the defeat at the Etihad - all raising questions as to why Bryan isn't playing.

Jokanovic says he picks the best XI based on the game ahead of them, but Bryan is the most comfortable at left back out of the three that have been picked there.

(Image: Bryn Lennon/Getty Images)

Having arrived on deadline day, it may be taking the 25-year-old some time to get used to the Fulham way of playing, but with Watford visiting who like their full backs to push on, using Bryan, who is attack minded, to utilise the space that will be afforded to him may be a strong option on Saturday.

Keeping confidence high

So Fulham have won just once this season, but they haven't played badly at all as they adjust to life in the Premier League.

Yes they've conceded 12 goals, let a 2-0 lead at Brighton slip and been battered by City, but all this is part of the learning process of the top flight.

They played superbly against Burnley, had a 25 minute spell against Spurs where they were the better side and did well at times to make sure that Sergio Aguero's supply lines were cut with their defensive shape at the Etihad - all this should give confidence to the side.

(Image: Marc Atkins/Getty Images))

Fulham can play football, we all know that - on their day they can beat a lot of these teams in the Premier League.

It's important that Jokanovic keeps spirits high in the camp, something he has experience of doing after that long winless run last season before the side went on that wonderful 23-game unbeaten streak.

Wins will come, the way Fulham play football and the players at their disposal are too good for them not to, it's now about Jokanovic managing the side to ensure they don't drop their heads and allow negativity to creep in.

Why Fulham is the perfect club for Aleksandar Mitrovic amidst Chelsea links

The Serbian has scored four goals already this season and is starting to find himself linked with clubs like the Blues

It's only taken five games of the Premier League, but Aleksandar Mitrovic's stunning 2018 form has seen him linked with a move across SW6 to Chelsea.

The Serbian netted 12 goals during his half-season loan spell at Craven Cottage last year and has added another four goals this season in the top flight since making his loan permanent in the summer.

It that time he's also scored eight goals for Serbia, making him the most lethal player in the country since his debut against Nottingham Forest back in April.

No surprise, then, that a club like Chelsea have been linked with eyeing up a possible move for him.

But having endured a less than happy experience at Newcastle, why would the 24-year-old want to leave Fulham, a club where everything suits him, from the style of play right down to the head coach himself?

Mitrovic and Fulham are, excuse the cliche, a match made in heaven.

Ever since Mitrovic arrived at the club, everything has suited him and he quickly found a home, something he hadn't had since leaving Anderlecht in 2015.

(Image: Marc Atkins/Getty Images)

And that's the main thing for Mitrovic - he needs an atmosphere where he feels wanted and looked after in order for him to thrive, and that's exactly what he has at Fulham.

When he was at St James' Park, the style of football Newcastle employed under Rafa Benitez wasn't suited to him, which eventually led to a feeling of not being wanted, which in turn meant that they didn't get the best out of him.

At the Cottage, however, Fulham needed a focal point for their attack and Mitrovic was the man to provide it.

(Image: Bryn Lennon/Getty Images)

His physicality and his presence means the side now have someone to play to up front, whereas before the intricate play from Tom Cairney and Kevin McDonald would get to the final third but then have nowhere to go.

And that's why Mitrovic is scoring so many goals - what he gives to Fulham in terms of being a focal point he receives back in goals - that's not something he'd get at Chelsea.

Olivier Giroud is enjoying life under new boss Maurizio Sarri as his target man, with Eden Hazard even going as far to say he's the best player in the world and doing that job so far.

Why then, would Mitrovic even consider leaving a club where he is the main man, for one where strikers are so often cast aside without being given a fair crack at the whip?

There's also his relationship with Jokanovic to consider.

The head coach was asked many times last season about being a father figure to the striker, something which prompted several amusing replies ('I'm not his uncle' and 'He has his own father' were my favourites), and although Jokanovic played this down, there's no doubting there is a bond there.

Before coming to Fulham, Mitrovic was seen as a hot-headed youngster who was almost as likely to get sent off as he was to score a stunning goal, but we've seen none of that since his move.

He's only had four yellow cards in all the games he's played under Jokanovic, with Mitrovic now representing a more mature version of the striker we saw at Anderlecht and Newcastle.

Whether that is entirely down to Jokanovic or because Mitrovic is finally at a club that he feels at home at is up for discussion, but there's absolutely no doubting that the head coach has had a massive impact on his form.

(Image: Justin Setterfield/Getty Images)

There's no doubting the management style of Sarri, but again, Mitrovic has no reason to swap his countryman for the Chelsea boss at this stage.

And finally, let's not forget the price tag.

Fulham paid big to get their man back from Newcastle in a permanent deal, and Tony Khan will slap a huge amount on Mitrovic's head if he even considers the though of selling him in the future.

Like we saw this summer with Ryan Sessegnon, Fulham will hold onto their big stars despite interest from names like Tottenham Hotspur - it's the same with Mitrovic, Chelsea and any other would-be suitors.

Player talks about Fulham departure this summer, 'I could only say yes'

The Portuguese press is always following their local players who have been playing abroad. And now there's a double reason for them to cover French side Lille, since the brothers José and Rui Fonte have both moved to the Ligue 1 club this summer.

Newspaper Record has spoken to both of them this week, and one of the questions made to Rui was about his transfer from Fulham FC.

The player has claimed that it wasn't an easy thing to leave the Cottagers just before the start of the season, but still, the move to Lille was something he was sure of.

"Changing clubs at that point is always a difficult choice, especially on the last day. The interest of Lille was interesting and was perfect for what I wanted. I could only say yes", Rui Fonte told Record.

Rui Fonte joined Fulham on a €9m deal from Braga in 2017. In his only season for the club, he had three goals and five assists in 29 games.

The 29-year-old has joined Lille on a one-year loan deal, and his contract with the London side runs until 2020.

O'Riley: 'It Was Our Hardest Test This Season.'

Matt O'Riley lauded his teams' performance after securing a crucial 1-0 home win against league leaders Wolves on Friday night.

It was his fifth minute penalty which was the difference after putting in a dogged defensive performance.

"It was a fantastic win for us, it was probably our hardest game of the season." He told fulhamfc.com. "They were really strong opposition. We dug deep at times especially in that second half but that's what you have to do to grind out wins.

"Normally we like to pass the ball around and keep the ball but that isn't always possible. Today we showed a lot more desire to win the game which is what saw us home.

"We really needed a win today and against such a strong team made it that much better. We can try and put a run together from here and see where it takes us."

The Young Whites will be hoping to build on their first league win when they return to Checkatrade Trophy action tonight.

They will travel to Adams Park to face Wycombe Wanderers, who overcame Northampton Town in their first group game.

Wycombe come into the game after a 0-0 stalemate against our previous Checkatrade opponents Oxford United in League One. The competition is something that Sean Davis sees as a valuable learning curve for our young players.

"I follow our youth setup quite closely and I think playing against older pros it's vital for any young player now. Playing against senior players, you get so much more experience than you do with Under-23 football.

"It's been proven so many times before. Just look at Harry Kane – he took in a number of loan spells in the lower leagues, and now he's one of the best strikers in the world. That's why this trophy is brilliant.

"Hopefully Wycombe put out their strongest side as it will be invaluable for our youngsters to come up against a group of players who are seasoned professionals in league football. That will be a good test."

Fulham and Crystal Palace should be on red alert amid Almamy Toure reports

Premier League duo Fulham and Crystal Palace were both reportedly interested in Monaco's Ligue 1 full-back Almamy Toure this summer.

Expect Almamy Toure to be a regular in the transfer gossip columns as we head towards the January transfer window.

The highly-rated Monaco full-back was linked with a move to the Premier League in the summer. The Guardian reported in May that Crystal Palace were interested in Toure while London rivals Fulham were also keen, according to L'Equipe.

And the Premier League duo should keep a close eye on the situation.

Because Toure looks likely to leave Monaco when his contract expires on a free next summer, or perhaps even for a cut-price fee in January.

According to the Guardian, the 22-year-old is refusing to sign a new deal with the Principality club.

He was expected to be Monaco's first choice right-back this season but Djibril Sidibe eventually stayed at the Stade Louis II, and Monaco then went and splashed out £18 million to sign Benjamin Henrichs from Bayer Leverkusen, leaving Traore well down the pecking order.

The 22-year-old Malian is an exciting and attack-minded full-back who could provide competition for the brilliant young Aaron Wan-Bissaka at Palace. He could also be seen by Fulham as a long-term replacement for Timothy Fosu-Mensah, who is only on loan from Manchester United.

Fulham vs Watford: Martin Atkinson to referee Premier League match

Martin Atkinson will referee Watford for the first time this season on Saturday. Picture: Action Images

Martin Atkinson will take charge of Watford's Premier League meeting with Fulham on Saturday.

Watford travel to Craven Cottage for the early kick-off looking to get back to winning ways after seeing their perfect start to the season ended by Manchester United last time out.

The Hornets will have to go against recent history under Atkinson's watch if they are to do so after struggling with him in charge in 2017/18.

Atkinson refereed three Watford games last season, with the Hornets losing 3-0 and 2-1 to Arsenal and Swansea City respectively and drawing 1-1 at home to Tottenham Hotspur.

Watford's most recent win with Atkinson as the man in the middle came way back in September 2016 as they beat West Ham United 4-2.

This season has seen Atkinson take charge of five Premier League games, showing 18 yellow cards and he is yet to dismiss a player.

He brandished 118 yellows and five reds in 33 games across all competitions in the 2017/18 campaign.

Liverpool news: Fulham ace Ryan Sessegnon makes Steven Gerrard revelation
RYAN SESSEGNON has revealed the club he used to support as a child and who he used to wear on the back of his shirt.

When you're playing in the Premier League at 18-years-old, there isn't much time to support a team.

But speaking with Match of the Day Magazine, Ryan Sessegnon has opened up on his childhood.

The England Under-21 international has revealed that Liverpool were the club he used to follow.

When asked if he wore a Reds shirt he admitted into having one former star on the back: "Gerrard!"

Luckily for Sessegnon, being a part of England's youth squads enabled him to meet his hero.

"I have met him. I was [starstruck], I met him at St George's park and he was giving me tips for my career," he added.

The left-sided player signed his first professional contract with Fulham when he was 17.

Manager Slavisa Jokanovic has helped him become a fan's favourite at Craven Cottage.

The Serbian has deployed the young star at either left-back or left midfielder, positions he hasn't always played throughout his career.

"I played all over the place at that age [10]. I think I was a striker actually. But yeah, as I've progressed I've changed everywhere," said Sessegnon.

He also refused to rule out playing as a striker again in the future, adding: "Maybe one day, yeah!"

Sessegnon has a twin brother at Fulham, Steven and admitted that it's helped him throughout his career.

Liverpool news: The winger has thrived under the management of Jokanovic (Image: GETTY)

"I think when you're young you always want someone to play with and we had that competitive edge, especially in the younger age groups in the academy," he said.

"We always wanted to see who was better. It's changed a little now – we're more supportive of each other, but growing up you wanted to see who was the better player."

Steven Sessegnon is yet to feature in the Premier League for Fulham and it's clear to say that Ryan is currently performing better.

Spurs are rumoured to be interested in the young left winger and Fulham are keen to tie him down to an improved contract.

Report names three Fulham youngsters who trained with Jokanovic's first-team

Slavisa Jokanovic is prepared to give youth a chance at Premier League newcomers Fulham.

No newly promoted side in the history of the Premier League had ever spent over £100 million in preparation for life in the top flight. Until Fulham, that is.

Slavisa Jokanovic's side embarked on a remarkable summer splurge after beating Aston Villa in the play-off final at Wembley, signing the likes of Jean Michel Seri, Andre Schurrle, Aleksandr Mitrovic and Andre-Franck Zambo-Anguissa.

But that does not mean that youngsters and academy graduates will not get their chance. Ryan Sessegnon remains one of Fulham's key players after winning the Championship Player of the Year award aged just 17 back in April.

It seems Jokanovic is keen to keep an eye on the academy, even if owner Shahid Khan is willing to spend big and bring established stars to Craven Cottage.

According to Football London, three highly-rated academy prospects were given the chance to train with Fulham's first-team during a warm weather training camp in Spain over the recent international break.

Harvey Elliott, Francois Tyrese and Matt O'Riley, who made his debut against Wycombe in the EFL Cup last year, were all given the chance to prove themselves by Jokanovic. And, of the three, Elliott is perhaps the most exciting.

"The kid is talented, I don't treat him like a kid - he showed the quality," the manager said.

"He's a great project of the football, a huge time is ahead of him and in general it's not question about my opinion, the club believe he can have a great future."

The Standard claimed at the start of September that Barcelona, Manchester City and Fulham's West London rivals Chelsea were tracking 15-year-old Elliott.

A Huge Dilemma For Jokanovic When Injured Defender Is Available For Selection

Flicking, quickly, through social media sites, I stumbled across a picture of Tim Ream being put through his paces, in training.

It would appear that our 'Player of the Year' last season is moving closer to a comeback.

Ream, a cult hero amongst the Fulham support, has been conspicuous by his absence recently whilst Slavisa Jokanovic utilises Dennis Odoi and Alfie Mawson at the heart of the defence.

To be brutally honest, the defence has looked a little brittle at times.

Tim Ream returns to Fulham training after six weeks out injured

The American had been out injured with a back injury since the pre-season friendly with Celta Vigo in August

Tim Ream has returned to first team training at Fulham.

The American defender had been out for six weeks with a back injury he sustained after the pre-season friendly with Celta Vigo at Craven Cottage and hasn't featured since.

Slavisa Jokanovic had initially expected the 30-year-old to return to training after the opening day draw with Crystal Palace, but a set-back meant that he would face further weeks out injured, returning to training this week.

Ream was voted as Player of the Season last year as Fulham won promotion back to the Premier League via the play-offs, with the American being a key member of the side that went 23 games unbeaten on their way to Wembley.

His return can't come soon enough for Fulham, who have conceded the most amount of goals in the Premier League this season with 12, and Ream's return will sure up a defence that looks likely to concede goals.

They've conceded two or more goals in every game so far this season and Jokanovic has spoken about the importance of having Ream available, with the 30-year-old vital to the way the side are set up.

Meanwhile, Tom Cairney is yet to return to training as he continues his recovery from an ankle injury that he suffered in the 4-2 victory over Burnley.

(Image: Daniel Hambury/PA Wire)

The skipper pulled out of the Scotland squad over the international break and missed the 3-0 defeat to Manchester City, with the visit of Watford also looking too soon for the 27-year-old.

Neeskens Kebano is also continuing his recovery from an ankle injury that he suffered in the 2-0 win over Exeter City, although there is no timescale on his return.

Fulham U21 players ratings: Young Whites battle hard but fall to last-minute Wycombe goal

It was a good performance from the young side against an experienced Wycombe Wanderers team

Fulham U21s battled hard against an experienced Wycombe Wanderers side but came away empty handed after the last kick of the game secured the League One outfit.

They were behind within two minutes when Adebayo Akinfenwa won a header on the edge of the box, nodding it down to Alex Samuel to fire low past Luca Ashby-Hammond.

They grew into the match as the game progressed, and although they had no clear first cut chances they dealt with the physical presence of a senior Wycombe team very well.

Fulham had their equaliser within ten minutes of the half starting when Thompson struck a brilliant 25-yard effort in off the underside of the crossbar from 25-yards out.

They continued to hold their own against the League One side, although clear cut chances were still rare to come by for the Young Whites at Adams Park.

But Wycombe got the winner with the last kick of the game, when Scott Kashket's last minuter strike deflected past Ashby-Hammond and into the net.

Here's how we rated the side:

Luca Ashby-Hammond - 8

Showed a good command of his box in what was a physical contest at Wycombe. Continued to do so in the second half and showed some good reading of the game.

Moritz Jenz - 7

Grew into the game and started to deal with the physicality of Akinfenwa really well. Taken off at half time despite a really good showing.

Rob Atkinson - 7

Did well for the most part and played a fairly good game in the heart of defence. Made a brilliant tackle in the second half to deny Kashket a certain goal.

Jerome Opoku - 6

Did decent coming out from the back with the ball. Showed a nice range of passing with some great long and short knocks in the second half.

Aron Davies - 7

Played higher than usual in the midfield and show some neat touches and a good range of passes in the first half. Was solid and compact as he dropped into the heart of defence in the second half.

Tyrese Francois - 8

Another to grow into the game, Francois started to drop deeper to get on the ball and showed some nice touches in the middle. Started to show his class and why he trains with the first team as the game progressed, playing a deep midfield role.

Jaydn Mundle-Smith - 6

Didn't have much impact going forward for Fulham but defended well at times against Wycombe. Had a better second half as Fulham got onto the ball more.

Cameron Thompson - 6

Rotated with Harris on the wings for Fulham and got himself onto the ball and into some good positions. Scored an absolutely worldie of the goal to equalise.

Jayden Harris - 6

Had a decent game in the middle of the park and got to grips more with the physicality of the game as time went on.

Timmy Abraham - 6

Made a few good runs in behind but wasn't getting the service, so dropped deeper to receive the ball and that was where he caused more problems. Taken off at half time but a decent showing.

Cody Drameh - 6

Latched onto a few good balls from Davies but couldn't produce that final ball into the box in the first half. Continued to do well in a physical contest.
Subs

Fabio Carvalho - 6

Showed some good reading of the game and his runs in between the channels caused Wycombe problems, although he was rarely found with the pass.

Harvey Elliott - 6

Looked a real class act and showed some lovely touches and runs in his 45 minute cameo. Quietened down as the half progressed but his potential was clear to see.

Chris Kelly - 6

Did well on the left as he came on and got used to the pace of the game fairly quickly. Showed some nice touches in midfield.
