Report: Carlos Carvalhal in contention for Fulham job if Slavisa Jokanovic is sacked

It is claimed that Fulham could turn to the former Sheffield Wednesday and Swansea City boss.

The former Swansea City and Sheffield Wednesday manager Carlos Carvalhal could replace Slavisa Jokanovic at Fulham, the Sun reported on Saturday (Goals pullout, page 4).

The newspaper claims the Portuguese is a contender to take over if Jokanovic is sacked.

Fulham have lost their last five Premier League fixtures under the Serb, conceding 17 goals in the process.

And appointing Carvalhal, who the Sun describes as a 'defence expert', could therefore appeal.

The 52-year-old helped to tighten up Swansea's back line after taking over midway through last season, but was known for implementing an attractive, attacking style in his early days at Sheffield Wednesday.

Wednesday twice reached the play-offs during Carvalhal's reign, while Swansea narrowly avoided what would have been a great escape from relegation under the former Sporting CP and Besiktas head coach.

Fulham travel to bottom-three rivals Huddersfield Town later on Monday.

What Fulham owner Shahid Khan said to Tom Cairney as skipper calls for side to find team spirit

Fulham news includes what Shahid Khan said to Tom Cairney ahead of their trip to Huddersfield Town

Shahid Khan wants Tom Cairney to help Fulham to 'get their mojo back' as the skipper calls for his side to find the togetherness that blew teams away last season.

Cairney and his team mates go into their biggest game of the season tonight when they take on Huddersfield Town, who are the only side below them in the Premier League table after a less than ideal start to life back in the top division.

One positive that Fulham can take into the game is that they have their skipper back - he started his first game since August in Thursday night's 2-0 defeat to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup and will lead the side out at the John Smith's Stadium in this crucial game.

Khan was in London last week to see Fulham lose 3-0 to AFC Bournemouth where he held meetings with Slavisa Jokanovic before and after the game, but he was also at Motspur Park where Cairney has revealed he had been trying to lift the player's spirits after their start to the season.

Ahead of tonight's trip to Huddersfield, the skipper said: "He is always around the players and asking how we are. He is quite a friendly owner. He was trying to lift spirits. It is a shame that we lost and the Jags [Jacksonville Jaguars] lost.

"The owner is a top man. He cares for the club and it is good to have him around.

"He just asked when I am back fit really. He said we need a bit of our mojo back and he said to get back as soon as possible."

It's no secret the amount that Fulham spent in the summer, bringing in 12 new faces as Tony Khan and the recruitment team tried to strengthen the club in order to survive in the Premier League.

So far, however, the amount of signings have complicated things at Craven Cottage, with players taking time to adjust to life in England, Jokanovic's tactics and the Premier League itself, meaning that the club are struggling and have conceded the most amount of goals in the division with 28.

Cairney knows his side need to cut out conceding goals, but he also believes Fulham will be fine once they get the team spirit that enabled them to blow teams away in the Championship and get them promoted to the Premier League via the play-offs.

He added: "We are conceding too many goals, I think that is obvious.

"We have got to get that team spirit and togetherness back from last season. Once we do that I think we will be alright. There are a of new faces in and the hardest thing is to gel as quickly as possible.

"They all came in at the end of pre-season and in an idea world you want them at the start of pre-season. We should be alright.

"I am not going to say we are going to go on an unbeaten run like we did last season but the first three points is vital and we build from there, Clean sheets and build form there.

"We used to blow teams away in the Championship but it is not as easy in this division.

"Get a clean sheet and then I believe we have enough to create chances in this team. We tried to be more defensive tonight [against City] and we were a bit more resolute."

One thing that could've helped Fulham's poor start to the season is having Cairney fully fit.

However, injury in the 4-2 win over Burnley back in August means he's played very little part in their campaign since, and it's clear that the side have struggled without their talismanic captain.

It's been hard for Cairney to watch helplessly from the sidelines as his side have struggled, but having come through 120 minutes of football in the past week, he's ready to get back to his best as soon as possible.

He added: "It has been so hard. The first three games of the season I started and feel really good against Burnley and we got our first win and I got injured in the last five or 10 minutes of the game.

"The most frustrating thing is you do a pre-season, work hard, get fit, you feel good and then that happens. I am going to have to get on the bike again and get back to where I was as quickly as possible.

"The game I started was the win against Burnley, it was positive and we looked good and then watching from the sidelines since we have not been ourselves.

"The hardest thing is when you feel like you cannot do anything to help. Hopefully I get get fitter and help the team."

Could Sam Allardyce Be On His Way To Fulham? 3 Managers In Line To Replace Slavisa Jokanovic, Should He Fail To Beat Huddersfield

Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic has not hidden away when speaking about the Cottagers woeful start to the Premier League season, but defeat tonight against Huddersfield Town could see the Serbian boss become the first top-flight manager to be sacked, and only a win is likely to keep him in a job.

Having spent around £100m on transfers following their promotion from the Championship, Fulham's free-flowing football was expected to light up the Premier League, but instead it's emphasised their defensive frailties, and they head into tonight's clash at the John Smith's Stadium sitting 19th in the table.

On a positive note for Fulham fans they face bottom club Huddersfield, who have been equally woeful all season, and an under-fire Jokanovic must be brave in west Yorkshire this evening, as he looks to save his job, but defeat and he is out the door!

We pick out THREE managers that could take over the reins from Jokanovic, should he be relinquished of his duties.

Sam Allardyce

Out of a job since leaving Everton at the end of last season, Sam Allardyce has been filling his time working for TalkSPORT on occasions, often using the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast as a platform to tell the masses how he would do better than 'insert manager' at 'insert club'.  We all know Allardyce's self-confidence can't be questioned, but should Jokanovic lose his job at Fulham then you have to feel the former England boss would be the first on the phone to rave about his abilities.

And, frankly the Fulham job would be an ideal position for the veteran boss, who is often handed the task of trying to keep teams in the Premier League, and he is sure to come into the reckoning to be the Next Fulham Manager.

Chris Coleman

Much loved as a player at Fulham, Chris Coleman also blossomed as a manager at the Cottagers before his tenure at the club abruptly ended in 2007 and he was forced to find work elsewhere.  Having shown his qualities as a boss when masterminding Wales' progression to the 2016 European Championships semi-finals, Coleman could be an ideal fit for a club he holds in high regard.

A rather disappointing spell at Sunderland recently may have seen his stock reduce, as he failed to stop the Black Cats' relegation to League One, but now plying his trade in China, Coleman would jump at the chance to return to his old club and could bring an air of positivity back to the club after a tough start.

Carlos Carvalhal

With an abundance of raw, inexperienced players, Fulham could benefit from a manager that has a raft of experience and Carlos Carvalhal could be that man.  A manager across the globe for 20 years, Carvalhal's last position was at Swansea City, where he failed to save them from relegation to the Championship, but during his time prior to that at Sheffield Wednesday he showed his talents.

Carvalhal oozes the experience that Fulham need at the moment, and should the Cottagers fail to beat Huddersfield this evening then could be another key contender in line to snap up an attractive Premier League job.

Telegraph piece on The "Chaos" at Fulham

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2018/11/05/slavisa-jokanovics-muddled-uncertain-fulham-find-stakes-high/

Slav needs to get this sorted or we will be saying goodbye to him unfortunately. His stubbornness last season to play his way eventually worked out but I don't think Khan will give him much more time if things don't improve or at least look like they are going to improve. Hopefully last Thursday was the start of the improvement.
