Why Calum Chambers' last-minute injury ruined Fulham's chances of victory at Old Trafford

When Fulham's starting lineup for Saturday's match against Manchester United was released, many supporters were shocked to see no place for Calum Chambers in the 18-man squad.

A late injury to the Arsenal loanee ruled him out of the match at Old Trafford, a brutal blow that ruined the Whites' chances of picking up any points.

Over the past four matches, Chambers has reinvented himself in SW6 as a deep-lying, combative central midfielder.

After his initial shaky performances at the back, Slavisa Jokanovic played him as a defensive midfielder in a 4-2-3-1 away at Liverpool, and the Englishman has drawn rave reviews in the centre of the park ever since.

Often first to every contested ball, quick to break up opposition play, and surprisingly potent going forward, Chambers swiftly turned himself into an integral member of the team.

Yet in his absence on Saturday, Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa was forced to fill in.

The Cameroonian international conjured up one of the worst displays all season in a Fulham kit, failing to track back defensively, constantly conceding possession thanks to terrible decision making, and generally lacking any sort of effort or desire.

Anguissa's sending off was unjust but it was telling that Ibrahima Cisse — a man making his Premier League debut — was far more composed and effective after coming on.

In all, Calum Chambers' absence was heavily felt during Fulham's 4-1 defeat at the hands of Manchester United, and Claudio Ranieri will be hoping he is fit for next weekend's matchup against West Ham.

Victor Moses May Reunite With Nigerian Coach As Fulham Join Race For Chelsea

Fulham have joined Premier League rivals Crystal Palace in the race for the signature of ex-Super Eagles dazzler Victor Moses, according to reports in the English press.

The online edition of The Sun says the Cottagers are also monitoring the situation of the Nigerian winger, who is valued in the region of £12 million by Chelsea.

Nigerian manager Colin Omogbehin, who coaches Fulham U18 team, could play a big role in convincing Moses to join Fulham, rather than returning to Palace, where he spent nine years.

Omogbehin served as a mentor to Moses during his teething years at Crystal Palace Academy and both master and pupil remain very close to this day.

It is looking likely that the former Nigeria international will end his six-year association with Chelsea in the January transfer window due to his lack of first-team opportunities, with only six matches played this season from a possible 24 in all competitions.

The 27-year-old is contracted with The Blues until June 30, 2021.

Report: Deportivo striker Pedro Martelo has proposals from Fulham and Portuguese clubs amid £900,000 termination clause

Martelo could prove a low-risk gamble for Fulham.

The Deportivo La Coruna striker, Pedro Martelo, has proposals from Fulham and several unnamed clubs in his native Portugal, according to O Jogo.

Martelo has played his only senior football for Deportivo's B team, but has yet to score in 13 appearances.

But the former Benfica youth team player has impressed on the international stage, where he has scored five goals in six games for Portugal's Under-20s, and fired the winner as the Selecao's U19s claimed European Championship success earlier this year.

And O Jogo reports that Martelo's contract contains a termination clause of €1 million (around £900,000), making him a low-risk gamble for Fulham.

According to Transfermarkt, his contract expires at the end of the current campaign.

Fulham's only Portuguese player, Rui Fonte - who also had a spell at Benfica - is on a season-long loan to Lille.

Fulham's interest in Victor Moses is bad news for Timothy Fosu-Mensah

If Fulham land Victor Moses from London rivals Chelsea to bolster their right-back options, it could be very bad news for Timothy Fosu-Mensah, who has endured an underwhelming loan spell at Craven Cottage so far this season.

London rivals Crystal Palace and Fulham are both weighing up a bid for Chelsea outcast Victor Moses, according to the Sun.

The former Wigan man was a favourite of Antonio Conte but he has struggled for gametime under Maurizio Sarri, making just six appearances so far this season.

The Sun report that the Blues will demand a £12m fee for the man who has become the club's third-choice right back and that has attracted the interest of the Cottagers and their former manager Roy Hodgson.

Moses can of course operate as a right winger as well, but if Claudio Ranieri gets the Nigerian international and uses him to bolster his faltering back four, it would be very bad news indeed for Timothy Fosu-Mensah.

Cyrus Christie has already pushed himself ahead of the Manchester United loanee in Ranieri's right-back pecking order and the likes of Denis Odoi and Calum Chambers can also fill in out there.

Getting Moses in would only shunt Fosu-Mensah further out of contention and given that he is only a loanee, Fulham would likely have no qualms freezing him out if it boosted their Premier League survival hopes.

That would make it two underwhelming loan spells in a row after the Dutchman's uneventful period with Palace last season.

How long Fulham will be without Andre Zambo Anguissa after red card in Manchester United loss

The Cameroon international was sent off in the 4-1 defeat at Old Trafford on Saturday

Fulham will have to face West Ham United without midfielder Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa after he received a red card in Saturday's 4-1 defeat to Manchester Untied at Old Trafford.

The record summer signing from Marseille picked up two bookings in the loss having been recalled back to the starting XI by Claudio Ranieri for the first time, with the Cameroon international not starting for Fulham since the 2-0 defeat to Liverpool all the way back in November.

He will only miss the one game, however, having received two yellows as opposed to a straight red, meaning that Ranieri will be forced to shuffle his side once more when the Hammers visit Craven Cottage in the evening kick off on Saturday.

Anguissa's red card came in somewhat questionable circumstances when he put in a robust tackle on Marcus Rashford in the second half but seemed to win the ball against the English international.

Lee Probert showed no hesitation in showing Anguissa his second yellow despite his protests.

He will be back from suspension for the trip to the north east on December 22 when Fulham take on Newcastle United in what is a massive game for their survival hopes, with the club currently sitting rock-bottom of the Premier League.

They face West Ham, Newcastle, Wolves and Huddersfield in succession in a run of games that will have to yield points heading into the New Year or face being cut adrift at the bottom of the table.

Fulham line up January move for Islam Slimani as Claudio Ranieri plots Premier League survival

Algerian international Slimani is currently on loan at Fenerbahce Credit: REUTERS

Claudio Ranieri is ready to move for Leicester's record signing Islam Slimani in January.

Ranieri, the new Fulham manager, is lining up a deal for Slimani as he targets signings to boost the club's hopes of Premier League survival.

Slimani, the Algeria international, is currently on loan at Fenerbahce but has only scored one league goal and the Turkish club are prepared to cut the deal short next month.

Ranieri signed Slimani for around £29m in August 2016 and is exploring a deal to sign him for around half the price.

It is understood Leicester will allow Slimani to join another club in January if they can agree a deal with Fenerbahce.

Leicester are also set to release long-serving midfielder Andy King, with Championship promotion contenders West Bromwich Albion registering an interest.

King is keen to move on when the transfer window opens after being left out of Claude Puel's 25-man league squad.

West Brom are considering a move for the Wales international, while there is also interest from other Championship clubs.

Adrien Silva, Leicester's £22m signing, could also leave Leicester on loan after struggling for games under Puel.

Silva has not started a league match for Leicester since the 2-1 defeat at Manchester United on August 10.

Puel has admitted players are expected to leave in the New Year and said: "We need to reduce the squad a little because we need to give some game time for players and motivation in the squad to keep all the time the good mentality and the positive attitude.

"It will not be a busy transfer window this winter because we have a squad with a lot of players."

Omogbehin: One Better

The Under-18s begin their adventure in the inaugural FA Youth Cup tomorrow night as they travel to the King Power Stadium to face Leicester.

The Young Whites go into the competition on the back of a 6-2 defeat to Arsenal, after picking up impressive results against Chelsea and Tottenham.

Colin Omogbehin is aware of the importance and heritage of the FA Youth Cup, but wants his players to remain calm on the occasion as they look to go one better than their quarter final exit last year.

"I think it is the biggest Cup competition in Youth Football." He told fulhamfc.com. "This competition has a fantastic history with some top-class players having featured in it and gone on to have fantastic careers. We have the opportunity to play at the best grounds, with top officials and referees to reflect the experience of the first team -  it's fantastic for any young player.

"We have to take the element of occasion into fact. We need to make sure they're relaxed and they treat it as a normal game to enjoy the game, they can't get too stifled or worried about the occasion, it's a game of football at the end of the day.

"Youth football is up and down. We want to be successful and stay in this competition for as long as possible, if we can give ourselves the best opportunity to progress. We need to try and repeat what happened last year and if we can go one better than that it would be great."

The Head Coach wants to put the defeat at the Gunners behind him and take the positives from the game.

"We always have to try and find a positive in any game you play in. For us, despite the score being emphatic for them, we created a number of chances that on another day could have made it 6-5 in a strange way.

"We have to breed a confidence going into every game, trying to work hard and stamp your authority on the game. Against your Chelsea's and your Tottenham's, we had a game plan which we stuck to extremely well. I felt we got good results from both and it shows if you dig in you always have a chance to succeed."

Having already been defeated in Leicester back in September, Omogbehin knows his side have progressed a long way as a unit since the result.

"When you look at our defeat to Leicester, we had a lot of players missing with a young and inexperienced team. But overall the squad have progressed since September, the last few games reiterated that. We've moved on well and made good progress.

"We have some good players, it will be hard to pick a team as they are all available, that's something we will know more about after a couple of days training.

"I'm very much about the team and the Club as a collective and our academy. We have a number of fantastic young players and if we can put another Cup run together it can only bode well for the development of this set-up."

Diangana must be unleash v Fulham

OPINION

Manuel Pellegrini must truly unleash West Ham attacker Grady Diangana against Fulham on Saturday as his unpredictable nature will leave them bamboozled.

The Hammers boss has opted to use the 20-year-old as an impact substitute during the recent clashes with Crystal Palace and Cardiff City but the veteran manager has to start him against the Cottagers.

Fulham are yet to keep a clean sheet this season and their defence is vulnerable to say the least.

While the Hammers have several players who can cause them damage given that Diangana is unpredictable to mark, has blistering pace and Fulham might not be expecting to see him on the teamsheet, then it's the perfect game to deploy him in.

While a few of those outings have seen him start games, Diangana is yet to complete 90 minutes in the Premier League so far in his career but given how much damage he could do against Fulham, it's time for that to change.

The attacker has racked up one assist in the league so far and he could easily add to that as well as get an opportunity to get his first league goal on Saturday given Fulham's vulnerabilities.

This means Diangana's confidence could receive a boost and see his performances get even better as a result.

Also as the fixtures have started to come thick and fast, Fulham is the perfect time for Pellegrini to inject fresh legs and enthusiasm into his starting line-up in order to keep his team refreshed while guarding against complacency.

So therefore the Hammers manager has to truly unleash Hammers fringe player Diangana against Fulham as he will be too much for them to handle.

How Aboubakar Kamara is showing that Fulham don't need to buy another striker

With Fulham down 3-0 at halftime at Old Trafford on Saturday, Aboubakar Kamara entered the fray with a near-impossible task: get Fulham back in the match with goals.

The Whites had looked toothless in attack all afternoon, yet the introduction of Kamara and a shift to a 4-4-2 system revitalised the Fulham side.

Due to Kamara's impressive goal and influential display, it appears Fulham don't need to splash the cash on another striker in January and would be better suited investing in defence or central midfield.

The Frenchman is a mercurial talent and can conjure up amazing things on the pitch as well as producing moments of maddening inconsistency. Yet recently, Kamara has more often than not turned his energy into goals, bagging in his last two matches against Leicester and Manchester United.

Against the Red Devils, Kamara won a penalty with strong play that forced Ander Herrera into conceding a spot kick. And the attacker converted from twelve yards out with aplomb, coolly sending David de Gea the wrong way with an assured finish.

If not for Andre Frank Zambo-Anguissa's questionable sending off, Fulham could have truly gotten themselves back in the match after it was pulled back to 3-1.

In all, Kamara's goalscoring success has shown Claudio Ranieri has a more than capable understudy to Aleksandar Mitrovic in SW6.

And with only weeks to go until the transfer window opens, Fulham need not to worry about finding another striker, but should rather focus their attention on shoring up their defence and abysmal centre midfield.

Fulham's links with Slimani make no sense as Mitrovic fills the target man role

Aleksandar Mitrovic and Islam Slimani have a similar style of play.

(Photo by VI Images via Getty Images)

According to The Daily Mail, Fulham are interested in signing Islam Slimani.

Slimani is currently at Turkish club Fenerbahce, on loan from Leicester City, and he could be available for transfer in January.

Leicester are ready to sell him and Claudio Ranieri is eyeing a reunion, having spent £30m bringing the striker to the King Power Stadium.

But this deal makes little sense, considering Slimani failed to impress under Ranieri and because he is too similar to Aleksandar Mitrovic.

Before moving to Leicester, the Algeria international scored 51 goals in 96 matches for Sporting Lisbon.

This season, Slimani has scored three times in 16 matches for Fenerbahce, which is hardly going to convince Fulham fans that he is the goal scoring striker who can fire them to safety.

Moreover, the 30-year-old is considered a target man, standing at 6ft 2in and renowned for his strength.

In his 16 games for Fenerbahce, he has won 48 aerial duels, according to Who Scored.

Mitrovic is also well-known for his physicality. According to Who Scored, the Serbia international has won a staggering 83 aerial duels in 16 Premier League games.

And with seven goals, the 24-year-old is a striker in the same mould as Slimani but with a better record of winning aerial duels and scoring goals.
