Fulham consider sending Fosu-Mensah back to Man Utd

According to the Daily Mail, Timothy Fosu-Mensah's loan at Fulham may be cut short.

The defender joined the London-based club looking for regular Premier League football, but has not managed to hold down a starting spot. He has only made eight league appearances so far.

Fulham are now thinking about terminating the loan this month in order to sign Chelsea centre-back Gary Cahill on a rental basis.

The rules mean a club can only have two players on loan at one time from other Premier League sides. With Fosu-Mensah and Calum Chambers currently taking those two spots, Fulham are willing to send the Dutch international back to Manchester United to make room for Cahill.

Fulham are currently sitting 19th in the Premier League and are fighting for survival.

Rangers in for McDonald could mean the beginning of the end for Coulibaly

football.london report that Rangers are keen on signing Kevin McDonald from Fulham this month.

Steven Gerrard has completed a sensational 18-month loan deal for Bournemouth striker and Premier League legend Jermain Defoe, and is ready to follow that up with some midfield cover.

McDonald has been very much on the fringes at Craven Cottage this term.

The Scotsman, who has five caps for his country following his debut against Costa Rica last year, has made 10 Premier League appearances so far in 2018/19.

The 2016 signing from Wolverhampton Wanderers has made close to 100 appearances for the club, but he now has strong competition in the form of Tom Cairney, Jean Michael Seri, Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa and Stefan Johansen.

The end for Coulibaly?

A successful move for McDonald could mean bad news for former fan favourite Lassana Coulibaly.

The Mali midfielder has struggled in recent months for the Gers, and looks a totally different player following his return from an injury earlier in the season.

Rangers fans were thrilled with his dynamic early displays, but he quickly tailed off and is no longer a nailed on starter for Gerrard.

Ryan Jack, Scott Arfield and Ovie Ejaria have been his competition this term.

With Steven Davis also set to re-sign for the Gers, Coulibaly's chances of getting regular minutes from here seem slim.

McDonald coming in would suggest that Gerrard is thinking twice about securing Coulibaly permanently from French side Angers.

Fulham close to securing their first winter signing to replace Fosu-Mensah

Fulham are reportedly close to securing the signature of Gary Cahill from Chelsea as they seek to replace Timothy Fosu-Mensah in their ranks. Mensah has failed to secure a regular role since his temporary move from Manchester United during the summer and it appears that the Cottagers have decided to terminate his loan deal to pursue a probable replacement.

According to LoveSportRadio, the west London side are prepared to send Fosu-Mensah to the Old Trafford club in the near future and they would thereafter shift their attention towards signing Cahill from Chelsea. The former England international has been a key contributor for the Blues over the past eight seasons but he has not been able to cement a regular spot this term with manager Maurizio Sarri preferring Antonio Rudiger and David Luiz in the central defence with Andreas Christensen generally acting as the option from the bench.

As such, the veteran has been restricted to less than 30 minutes of league action through the campaign and he appears set to part ways with the Blues during the ongoing transfer window. Meanwhile, LoveSportRadio claims that the Cottagers are only aiming to pursue the centre-back on a short-term loan for the season and it will be interesting to see whether the veteran fancies the move across London, given Claudio Ranieri's side have been largely vulnerable at the back.

Cahill has shown signs of regression over the past year where his performances have been questioned. However, he would still provide vast league experience and expertise which has genuinely been lacking within the Cottagers backline despite their spending spree during the summer. Fulham are currently four points behind safety after 21 games into the season. They are scheduled to entertain Oldham Athletic in the FA Cup third round in the next encounter.

Fulham reportedly join West Ham in targeting Gabriel Barbosa

Inter Milan's Serie A flop 'Gabigol' could move to the Premier League with West Ham United and Fulham linked.

West Ham United's pursuit of Brazilian striker Gabriel Barbosa appears to have taken another unwelcome turn.

Calciomercato reported this week that the Hammers are in talks with Inter Milan about signing the 22-year-old, who moved to the San Siro in 2016 for £29.5 million.

Gabriel has failed to impress at Inter and, after scoring 27 goals on loan at former club Santos last season, the Nerazzuri are allegedly keen to cash in.

But, according to Goal, West Ham are facing some fresh competition. It is understood that Inter would also allow Gabriel to leave on loan as long as a club agrees to pay his wages – and Fulham may be willing to do exactly that.

So West Ham could face a battle with their London neighbours for a player who was initially tipped to follow in the footsteps of Neymar, Gabriel Jesus and co when making his name back in Brazil.

Fulham certainly need a striker capable of taking the pressure off Aleksandar Mitrovic as they aim to avoid an immediate return to the Championship.

Goal, however, has pointed out that Gabriel would have second thoughts about joining a team in a relegation battle although a mid-table side, like West Ham, could catch his eye.

Fulham and West Ham could face a challenge securing a work permit, however, with Calciomercato pointing out that he is not guaranteed to be granted one by the FA.

Aston Villa target transfer for another Manchester United man - reports

Latest AVFC transfer news includes a link to Manchester United defender

Aston Villa are interested in signing Manchester United defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah, according to reports.

Fosu-Mensah has spent the first half of the season on loan at Fulham but he's found his opportunities limited since Claudio Ranieri replaced the sacked Slavisa Jokanovic.

A substitute appearance in the 4-1 defeat at Arsenal on New Year's Day is Fosu-Mensah's only first team action since Ranieri's appointment and there are now suggestions Fulham could send him back to Old Trafford.

The Daily Mail reports Villa could consider a move for Fosu-Mensah as Dean Smith bids to beef up his defence.

Fosu-Mensah is equally adept at right-back or centre-back, while he's also played in midfield.

Villa have already made five loan moves this season with the EFL only permitting clubs to sign eight players on temporary deals.

Meanwhile, the Mail also reports that a move for Brentford midfielder Romaine Sawyers may have to wait until the summer.

Dean Smith is a big fan of Sawyers having signed him for both Walsall and Brentford but the Bees are reluctant to deal this month.

Pochettino's latest comments open the door for Dembele depature in January

Mousa Dembele might have been expected to leave Tottenham at the end of the season, but Mauricio Pochettino has opened the door for him to leave this month.

Mousa Dembele's injury problems and physical decline have pushed him closer to the Tottenham exit door in recent months but it has looked as if it would come at the end of the season, owing to their lack of squad depth.

But with the Belgian's contract expiring at the conclusion of the current campaign, the January transfer window more than likely represents Daniel Levy's last opportunity to recoup any transfer fee for the former Fulham man.

Speaking ahead of tonight's FA Cup third round match against Tranmere, Mauricio Pochettino was asked about the future of the midfield powerhouse.

He told football.london: "There is still no news. No news, again like Christian Eriksen – a different situation – it is not only in our hands. I don't know [if he will leave in January], that is going to be a club decision, of course involved with the player and the people that are with him."

Tottenham have triggered an extension in Toby Alderweireld's contract and offered Christian Eriksen a new deal, to follow up extensions signed by Harry Kane and Dele Alli of late.

But no such urgency appears to exist around Dembele, and with Pochettino refusing to rule out the prospect of losing him this month and a shrewd businessman like Levy trying secure as much money for a club moving into a new stadium as possible, the signs are pointing towards a January exit for a player who has been so central to this Tottenham revolution.

Eight under-the-radar centre-backs and the Premier League clubs that should try and sign them

It's said that defences win championships. There is no doubt when you look at every Premier League-winning side you'll find a central defender or two of great repute.

However, a great centre-back can do wonders for those battling at the bottom, just as much as having a serial goalscorer.

With the winter transfer window open, expect to see incredible business as clubs up and down the Premier League seek an improvement on what they have. For some, it's aiming for the greatest prize, while for others just consolidating their league status is paramount.

Goals win games but oft-forgotten is the importance of keeping them out. Central defenders are now just as valuable as playmakers, wingers or centre-forwards. It's why Manchester United, for example, are willing to break the bank for Napoli's colossus Kalidou Koulibaly.

He is a high profile name. As follows are those not in the same conversation as Koulibaly but playing an equally good season, and which Premier League club should sign them.

Mattia Bani (Chievo)
Who should sign him? Bournemouth

Bournemouth are likely to dip into this month's transfer window following the injuries sustained to full-backs Adam Smith and Simon Francis.

At the moment, head coach Eddie Howe has enough central defensive options, but would there be any harm in bolstering that particular area, especially as The Cherries have recently started to play a back-three?

Someone who could slot in and make an impact is Mattia Bani. The 25-year-old, a member of Chievo since 2016, has been one of Serie A's leading centre-backs this season, particularly when it comes to adopting a take-no-prisoners mentality.

Key stat: Mattia Bani has made more tackles (2.6) and blocks (1.1) per game than any other Chievo player in Serie A this season.

Jeffrey Gouweleeuw (Augsburg)
Who should sign him? Brighton & Hove Albion

When he broke through at boyhood club Heerenveen all those years ago, Jeffrey Gouweleeuw was tipped for big things; by now, many observers felt he would have been a regular Dutch international. Unfortunately, those visions have not come to pass.

With that being said, he's forged a credible playing career in Germany with Augsburg, but the native of Heemskerk must feel the itch for another challenge.

A capable ball-playing centre-half, Gouweleeuw could, for example, bolster Brighton's build-up play.

Key stat: Jeffrey Gouweleeuw has successfully completed 98 long passes in 16 Bundesliga games this season, only Wolfsburg's John Brooks has more in the competition.

Vitor Hugo (Fiorentina)
Who should sign him? Huddersfield Town

This month is a big one for Huddersfield Town, who are staring a relegation battle in the face. David Wagner's men are currently bottom after 21 matches played and eight points adrift from safety.

However, they are not the worst in terms of goals conceded, but there's no chance of them resting on their laurels. Bringing a central defender with an incredible force of personality can often make the difference. Vitor Hugo, an ever-present for Fiorentina this season, is a potential candidate.

Key stat: Vitor Hugo has made the most tackles (2.5) and clearances (5.2) per game for Fiorentina so far and ranks fourth for interceptions made by all players in Serie A this season (42).

Aissa Mandi (Real Betis)
Who should sign him? Cardiff City

Aissa Mandi has been a real under the radar success this season. His contributions are one of the reasons why Real Betis presently sit just two places (and four points) below the Champions League spots in La Liga.

The 27-year-old Algerian international does the basics well, but it's Mandi's command with the ball that's setting him apart from the rest. Someone with his particular set of skills is going to be valuable to a side desperately in need of calmness at the back. Step forward Cardiff City.

Key stat: Aissa Mandi has a 93.5% pass completion rate in LaLiga this season, the third best in the competition among players to have made at least 10 appearances.

Davide Biraschi (Genoa)
Who should sign him? Crystal Palace

No league is more synonymous with defensive excellence than Italy's top division. Some of Europe's very best play here; among the celebrated are many others who don't always have the spotlight on them but excel in their own right. A good example is Davide Biraschi.

He's been nothing short of excellent for Genoa this season. Someone of his class would be an asset. Crystal Palace could only improve with him at the helm, especially given Biraschi's love of carrying the ball out of defence. Palace, always a threat on the counter, would become a more dangerous proposition.

Key stat: Davide Biraschi has made more interceptions than any other Genoa player (43) and is one of just six outfielders in Serie A to have played every minute of the season so far.

Stefan Bell (Mainz 05)
Who should sign him? Newcastle United

Rafael Benítez undoubtedly wants reinforcements this month, though whether he gets them is another matter. One area Newcastle United should be looking to strengthen is in central defence.

There's an onus on the modern centre-back to chip in with some creativity. Stefan Bell of Mainz 05 is doing just that so far this season. For club's battling to stay up, which the Magpies are, it's nothing but a bonus.

Key stat: Stefan Bell has won 62 aerial duels in the Bundesliga this season. Only Salif Sane has won more aerial duels among central defenders in the Bundesliga so far.

Bernardo Espinosa (Girona)
Who should sign him? Burnley

Few things get people off their seats more than a defender that means business. A well-timed challenge here, a clearance there, having some who embodies these virtues goes a long way to calming their side and supporters in the stands.

Girona are feeling that way about Colombian enforcer Bernardo Espinosa, who not long ago represented Middlesbrough. His time in England was largely forgettable but that doesn't mean he can't succeed here. Maybe it takes playing under a manager like Sean Dyche.

Key stat: Bernardo Espinosa has made the most interceptions (24) and blocked the most shots (24) for Girona in LaLiga this season and ranks first for clearances made in the division (128).

Gianmarco Ferrari (Sassuolo)
Who should sign him? Fulham

Fulham were looking at Gianmarco Ferrari last summer but nothing came of their interest. Given their predicament, being the league's worst defensive side, having shipped in 47 goals across 21 games, there is no doubt they are more than keen to address the situation this month.

Claudio Ranieri, whose pragmatic approach enabled Leicester City to become unlikely Premier League champions in 2016, will be focused on improving their defence. Rekindling their pursuit of Ferrari would be a step in the right direction. The 26-year-old Italian sees his present deal with Sassuolo expire in 2021 and may feel now is the time for an English adventure.

Key stat: Gianmarco Ferrari leads Sassuolo's stats on clearances (50), blocked shots (14) and aerial duels won (34) in Serie A this season.

Claudio Ranieri comments on possible Timothy Fosu-Mensah return to Manchester United

Reports on Thursday suggested the youngster's contract loan had been cancelled

Timothy Fosu-Mensah is still with Fulham for the moment but Claudio Ranieri has admitted that Manchester United might hope to see him return to Old Trafford.

The Netherlands international has struggled for minutes since Ranieri's appointment at Craven Cottage with just 34 minutes at Arsenal in the Italian's time at the club.

Reports circulated yesterday that the youngster's loan deal had been cancelled with the view the Whites were looking to sign Chelsea's Gary Cahill, and it looks as though Fosu-Mensah has little future at the club. The 67-year-old coach is firmly focused on Fulham's survival rather than player development.

Ranieri said: "I don't know, if United want him, he can go because with me he does not play often and I understand he is young he needs to play. This moment for me is very, very important to achieve our goal. Our goal now is to save Fulham."

The Cottagers boss also commented on the Cahill rumours but refused to give anything away. The ex-Bolton defender has played just over half an hour of football this season and has been linked to Fulham but also the likes of Arsenal. Ranieri did not want to give away anything regarding his transfer plans.

He said: "Yes, I know. A lot of names are coming here – in Italy, in France, everywhere. That's your job, but my job is to speak with the club. I'm sorry. I don't know (about Gary Cahill). Thank you so much.

"If there will be some opportunities, the club is ready – that's the maximum I can tell you. I'm expecting."

Fulham ready to spend in January to ensure Premier League survival
Chelsea centre-back Gary Cahill has been linked with a move to Craven Cottage.

Claudio Ranieri has refused to rule out the signing of Gary Cahill and with concerns surrounding Alfie Mawson's fitness, he insists Fulham are "ready" to spend.

He has also revealed he would understand if loanee Timothy Fosu-Mensah was to return to parent club Manchester United — potentially creating room for Cahill's arrival.

Mawson has started rehabilitation on the knee injury that Ranieri fears means he will be out for "a while", and with Cahill out of favour at Chelsea, Fulham are reportedly close to concluding his arrival on loan.

Despite spending in excess of £100million in the summer transfer window, Fulham have fallen into the Premier League's bottom three which saw Slavisa Jokanovic sacked and the appointment of Ranieri.

Further investment is expected in an attempt to secure survival, and asked of the 33-year-old Cahill, Fulham's manager joked: "A lot of names are coming here — in Italy, in France, everywhere.

"If there will be some opportunities, the club is ready – that's the maximum I can tell you. I'm expecting.

"If United want (Fosu-Mensah) he can go because with me he does not play often and I understand he is young and he needs to play.

"It's difficult to say how long (Mawson will be absent) but it is important he recovers well. When something happens we have to stay calm and I prefer if the player is ready and 100 per cent."

On Sunday, Fulham host Sky Bet League Two Oldham in the third round of the FA Cup, when Mawson is expected to be their only absentee.

Ranieri is regardless expected to make changes to a team that continues to show signs of improvement, following seven fixtures in December where they demonstrated moments of fatigue.

"I will give a chance to some players who aren't used to playing every match and I want to give them a very good opportunity to show their qualities to me and also in front of our supporters," the 67-year-old said.

"In (Oldham's) last two matches they have won and they changed their coach and then they have everything to win and nothing to lose and vice-versa; we have everything to lose and nothing to win."

Forward said to be 'stimulated' by Fulham interest, a lot to sort out before deal happens

The past couple of days has seen the emergence of some rather exciting stories for Fulham, who appear to be looking for both a defender and another forward.

Linked with Domagoj Vida late on Thursday for the centre-back position, earlier reports from Italy suggested Claudio Ranieri was also interested in Grégoire Defrel for his attack, as he looks to help out Aleksandar Mitrovic with more firepower.

However, the situation is a little bit complicated since the Frenchman is currently on loan from Roma at Sampdoria, and a deal would only be possible if the Genoa based side agreed to cut the deal for their six goals in 18 league appearances striker short.

That hasn't happened just yet, but there has been talk of them looking at alternatives, and we're guessing that if they can find one, they'll give Roma the green light to bring back Defrel to then send him to Fulham, from whom they'll be able to get more money from.

The idea would be to recoup most of their original expenditure (around €20m altogether), and Gazzetta dello Sport explain that news of the Cottagers' interest has reached the forward, who is said to be 'stimulated' or 'aroused' (the word translates both ways) by the news.

Newcastle should try to sign Cairney, but not in a swap with Shelvey

According to the Sun, Fulham boss Claudio Ranieri is interested in swapping Tom Cairney for Newcastle midfielder Jonjo Shelvey.

While the Magpies were previously interested in the Fulham midfielder, it would be a disaster to sanction such an exchange.

Shelvey's range of passing was evident once again when he came off the bench in the 2-0 defeat to Manchester United on Wednesday night and he would be a great miss if he were to leave.

Lacking depth

Newcastle already have a squad that lacks in depth. While Mo Diame's latest injury is said to be minor, Isaac Hayden has reiterated his desire to leave. Elsewhere, Ki Sung-Yeung is set to miss several games due to international commitments.

Rafael Benitez, unaware of his transfer budget, knows his squad lacks quality without losing key players. Strengthening his side in the transfer window is crucial and Cairney would offer a presence that has so often been missing from the Toon Army's starting XI.

Whether owner Mike Ashley would sanction such a deal is certainly debatable. However, if he wants to keep the side in the Premier League — and keep his chances of selling the club alive — he must back his manager this month.

Fulham vs Oldham preview: Claudio Ranieri to rotate squad for FA Cup tie

Fulham face Oldham in the FA Cup at Craven Cottage on Sunday

Claudio Ranieri has said he will field players who are not used to playing every game for Fulham's FA Cup third -round tie with Oldham.

Fulham remain four points from safety in the relegation zone and face a crucial match against fellow Premier League strugglers Burnley next week.

Despite calling the FA Cup "wonderful", Ranieri described the Premier League as "too important", and will use the opportunity to rest some players.

"I will give some chances to players who aren't used to playing every match and I want to give them the opportunity to show their qualities to me and our supporters."

"I do the last training session and then I organise my mind. See who I will rest and who could join me on the bench."

Oldham Athletic's caretaker manager Pete Wild has challenged his side to provide an FA Cup shock against Fulham, despite sitting 59 places below them in the football league.

"Of course, we can get the upset, why would we bother going if we didn't think we could win the game." he said.

"It's 11v11 at the end of the day and we've got a great history of cup upsets.

"We've got to go down there with the mindset that we're going to cause an upset and if we can do then it'll be fantastic."

Team news

Calum Chambers is expected to return to the starting XI after being ineligible for Fulham's Premier League match against Arsenal, though Alifie Mawson is likely to miss out with a knee injury.

Oldham will be without striker Ishmael Miller after his short-term contract came to an end, but defender Rob Hunt is in contention after sitting out the match against Notts County with a foot injury.

Opta stats

This will be just the second FA Cup meeting between Fulham and Oldham, with Fulham winning the other 2-0 in the 1982-83 third round.

The last time Fulham played Oldham in any competition was back in January 1999 in a third tier league game at Craven Cottage - Fulham winning 1-0.

Fulham have lost just one of their last 18 FA Cup games against sides from a lower division (W11 D6).

However that defeat did come in their last such game, losing 0-1 to Sheffield United in a round four replay during the 2013-14 season.

Oldham are aiming to reach round four of the FA Cup for the first time since 2012/13, when they were eventually beaten by Everton in round five.

AC Milan's reported Stefan Johansen interest will baffle Fulham supporters

On Friday, Sky Sports reported that Serie A giants AC Milan were interested in signing Fulham midfielder Stefan Johansen in January.

For a player who can barely get a game at the Premier League strugglers, Fulham fans will be bewildered by the Italian club's pursuit of Johansen.

The Norwegian international was undoubtedly a crucial part of the Whites' promotion core, providing effervescent energy, attacking purpose, and determined tackling in the centre of the park.

Yet once Fulham entered the top flight, Johansen's opportunities have understandably been limited, and the 27-year-old has not looked up to the task of playing Premier League football in his rare appearances this campaign.

Out of his 12 Premier League matches this season, Johansen has come off the bench on eight occasions, and was recently dropped out of the matchday squad for the Wolves and Huddersfield matches.

Ibrahima Cisse, the central midfielder who barely saw the pitch for Fulham in the Championship, was even preferred over Johansen and handed a start against Arsenal on New Year's Day.

Johansen is still warmly regarded in SW6, but it is abundantly clear his quality is not up to scratch for the Premier League — a fact that makes Milan's interest baffling.

Fulham would do well to offload Johansen to Italy for a substantial fee in January, yet it remains to be seen what AC Milan have in mind for a back-up midfielder at one of the Premier League's worst clubs.

Huge 75% of Fulham fans think Cahill can save their season

After the news emerged that Fulham could sign Chelsea defender Gary Cahill on loan this month, we discussed whether the former Champions League winner would be able to save The Cottagers.

Fulham currently sit in the relegation zone in the Premier League, and have conceded the most goals in the league. Claudio Ranieri will be desperate to shore up his defence, and Cahill may be the perfect player to help.

With that in mind, we asked you whether the 33-year-old can save Fulham from relegation and these were the results:

Fulham fans obviously have a lot of confidence in the two time Premier League winner, with 75% of fans believing that he can save their season. Given the success that Ranieri has had in the Premier League with fairly limited defences, it is no surprise that the Fulham fans are confident about this potential transfer. They can only hope the Italian can work his magic with the centre-back.

Fulham's season would take a positive turn if they manage to land this 6ft 2in giant in the coming days

Why Fulham must make a move for Waldemar Anton in January

Another game, another heavy defeat for Fulham! They just can't stop leaking goals this season, can they?

The Cottagers' recent defeat came at the hands of Arsenal at the Emirates on the New Year's Day, although the 4-1 thrashing was a harsh pill to digest for Claudio Ranieri, as his side created a lot of chances. Ranieri was let down by his team's poor finishing and had Fulham taken their chances, the result could have been different.

But on the whole, the defence remains Fulham's Achilles heel and Ranieri needs to act swiftly to stop the rut. The January transfer window gives Ranieri an ideal chance to stamp his authority over his team to help the west London club avoid relegation from the top-flight.

The Fulham chief needs to bring in a few reinforcements to try and energise his squad. A central defender should be at the top of Ranieri's list following another dismal defensive performance in the Premier League.

To solve their defensive woes, the Cottagers must target Hannover 96 centre-back, Waldemar Anton.

The 22-year-old has developed into one of the top young defenders in Germany. The Uzbekistan-born German has impressed in the Bundesliga this season, managing 17 appearances for Hannover. He was a mainstay in Hannover's promotion to the Bundesliga a couple of years ago and has been an ever-present figure since.

Standing at 6ft 2in, Waldemar Anton is a physically strong, robust and a no-nonsense defender who is a central defender by trade but can also play in front of the back four.

The German is a top tackler and relies more on positioning than pace. He can pick out a pass, bring the ball out from the back with utmost comfort and is a real leader.

Anton's towering frame makes him an asset at both ends of the pitch. His game-reading abilities belie his age and despite being a defender, the 22-year-old is an excellent finisher in front of the goal. Furthermore, his ability to play in front of the defence and at right-back offers good versatility to the team.

Fulham's defence is currently crying out for a leader and Anton would be the right fit for the team. His presence and positivity in the dressing room will play a significant role in keeping the group tightly knit together.

It is, therefore, a no-brainer for Fulham to sign one of the Bundesliga's brightest young talents this month.

Report: Rangers start initial talks to sign Fulham's Kevin McDonald

Rangers are being linked with Fulham's Kevin McDonald.

According to Football.London, Rangers have started preliminary talks with Fulham about a deal to sign midfielder Kevin McDonald.

The Gers are set to snap up four players, as the Glasgow Evening Times report that deals for Jermain Defoe and Steven Davis are imminent, as are pre-contract moves for Glen Kamara and Jordan Jones.

That would be a perfect start to the January transfer window for Rangers, boosting their titles hopes this season whilst also planning for next season and beyond.

Intriguingly though, another name strongly linked with Rangers this week is Fulham's McDonald, with reports emerging earlier this week of Steven Gerrard's interest in the 30-year-old.

Now, Football.London report that Rangers have made first contact with Fulham about a deal for McDonald, with preliminary talks underway.

The former Dundee man has struggled for playing time in the Premier League of late, and may be allowed to leave by new Fulham boss Claudio Ranieri during this month's transfer window.

McDonald is a Scotland international and a strong midfielder with composure on the ball, but it's fair to say that a deal at this stage with Rangers would be a huge surprise.

McDonald may just be a backup option in case anything goes wrong with Rangers' move for Steven Davis, as signing both – when Gerrard already has Ross McCrorie, Ryan Jack, Scott Arfield and Lassana Couliably – would be a real shock.

Inter Outcast Gabigol Could Move To Fulham

Fulham have emerged as the most likely destination for Inter outcast Gabriel Barbosa in the January transfer window, according to Libero.

Barbosa signed for Inter in the summer of 2016 but endured a disastrous first season in Milan, making just 10 first-team appearances and scoring one goal.

He is due to return to the club for training next week following the termination of his 12-month loan with childhood side Santos, but the Nerazzurri have no interest in keeping the 22-year-old for the remainder of the season.

'Gabigol' would like to stay in Italy and prove his worth to coach Luciano Spalletti but Inter have already set a €20 million price tag for the Brazilian forward.

West Ham were linked with a move last week, but they would first need to sell two players in order to make room for him in the squad.

Fulham, who are now managed by former Inter boss Claudio Ranieri, are therefore tipped as a side who could meet Suning's asking price.
