Jamie Vardy & Youri Tielemans updates before Fulham

Youri Tielemans & Leicester

The Telegraph on Tuesday have posted an update on Youri Tielemans joining Leicester on a full-time basis.

Tielemans moved to the King Power Stadium from Monaco in the January transfer window.

The midfielder agreed a loan deal to stay with the Foxes until the end of the season.

Tielemans has started his Leicester career with two assists in four matches.

According to the Telegraph, Leicester are looking at signing Tielemans in a permanent deal.

However the Foxes have been told they'll have to break their club record to sign the Belgian international:

Brendan Rodgers will have to break Leicester's transfer record and pay £40million if he moves to sign Youri Tielemans in the summer.

Rodgers is assessing his new squad following his appointment last week and the prospect of buying Tielemans outright is certain to be discussed before the end of the season.

There is a chance that sign Tielemans for cheaper.

That could happen if Monaco agree to sign Adrien Silva as part of the transfer.

Silva moved to Monaco in January as part of the Tielemans loan deal.

Jamie Vardy vs Fulham

Leicester take on Fulham this weekend in the Premier League.

Will Brendan Rodgers claim three points in his first match in the dugout at the King Power?

In a boost for the Foxes, the Telegraph believe that Jamie Vardy will be fit for the Fulham match.

Vardy was subbed out of last weekend's defeat at Watford with a knock. However the broadsheet report:

Vardy is expected to be fit for Rodgers' first home game as Leicester boss against Fulham on Saturday.

Vardy was taken off in the second half after a heavy collision with Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster earlier in Sunday's 2-1 defeat, but is set to play this weekend.

What happened to Ryan Sessegnon?

Background photo: Sammy222fulham, CC-BY-CC0

Ryan Sessegnon was the best player to come out of the Championship last season. His age made his consistent performances more amazing. There were calls in some quarters for the youngster to be included in England's World Cup squad. Those calls would seem outrageous today.

Fulham enjoyed a remarkable run in the 2017/18 Championship campaign, winning 25 games and scoring 79 goals to finish third. They defended their position in the promotion playoffs to earn a season in the hell of the top flight. Sessegnon was key to that success but has suffered in the worst circle of Premier League hell. The young Englishman scored the most goals and provided the most assists for Fulham but has spent most of his time this season on the bench.

One could easily envisage Sessegnon coming into the Premier League and pulling some weight. Instead, the reigning Championship Player of the Year can't establish a regular place in the Fulham first team.

No one needs to be reminded how much Fulham has suffered this term. It will take a miracle if for the cottagers to avoid relegation. Sessegnon has shown flashes of brilliance on occasion. You can be forgiven for not remembering them. They came few and far between in a forgettable campaign. The 18-year-old has scored twice and laid on five. Those numbers are normally encouraging for an 18-year-old fullback. In light of his 2017/18 heroics, they disappoint.

Three factors led to Sessegnon's slow pace.

Fulham's form
Can a player be in better form than his team? There's a limit to how brilliantly a player can shine in a struggling team. Eden Hazard managed a miserly four League goals in the 2015-16 Premier League campaign. That was the season Manchester United ignored when hiring Jose Mourinho. With the Portuguese sacked in December in what is fast becoming a tradition to rival Christmas, Chelsea went on to finish tenth.

Second from bottom, Fulham are Championship bound. They've won just five of their 29 League outings. They've conceded more goals (65) than any team in England's top four Divisions. Fulham isn't just among the worst teams in the Premier League, they're making Sunderland look like Manchester City.

Fulham's form is disastrous. Clearly, it's choking out Sessegnon.

Playing time
Bad form always leads to rationed minutes unless you're Antonio Valencia playing for Jose Mourinho. In 2017/18, Sessegnon started 48 league games for Fulham. With his immense talent and the breathtaking form Fulham showed, his 16 goals and eight assists shouldn't have been the surprise they were. Sessegnon was simply repaying the faith invested in him by the manager.

Things turned sour for the star this campaign. Slavisa Jokanovic made an unexpected tweak in the Cottager's set-up. Joe Bryan was preferred at left-back. Andre Schurrle's form and experience left no room further up the pitch. Claudio Ranieri came in with a mandate for change. He left that dynamic unsullied.

The League
The Championship is a highly competitive professional competition that simply cannot be compared to the Premier League. Sessegnon thrived in the former. The Premier League has been madness. As in one step beyond.

Did fans and pundits expect too much? Sessegnon turns 19 in May. He bagged a couple of goals and, despite riding the bench, is Fulham's assist leader. Yet we think he should have done better in a league notorious for shutting out young English talent.

Ryan Sessegnon is a brilliant player with immense ability. Perhaps the next Gareth Bale. However, the pace of his development slowed when his club ran into a brick wall.

Does he go back to the Championship to try again? Does he venture abroad like Jadon Sancho and Brahim Diaz? Or might a bigger Premier League club be interested in kick-starting his young career? If you could give him a birthday present, which would it be?

Fulham launch astonishing series of swipes at Liverpool in defence of Roy Hodgson

Cottagers stoke flames in official matchday programme ahead of Reds visit later this month

Roy Hodgson, now manager of Crystal Palace, and Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp shake hands (Image: Julian Finney/Getty Images)

Liverpool's visit to Fulham later this month has assumed a new dimension after the Londoners aimed an astonishing series of swipes at the Reds and their supporters.

The official Fulham FC Matchday Programme for Sunday's 2-1 defeat to Chelsea included a regular section called "The List" in which they mused over three people who would have perhaps been better served by not leaving the club.

Among their selections was Roy Hodgson, who departed Craven Cottage in the summer of 2010 for an ill-fated and brief tenure in charge of Liverpool.

And in describing Hodgson's time at Anfield, Fulham have stoked the flames ahead of the visit of Jurgen Klopp's side on Sunday week.

"He was given a frosty reception on his subsequent appointment at Liverpool, with fans being unmoved by his success with smaller provincial clubs like Inter Milan," read the article.

"Realising that Roy was not going to win the league immediately and angered by his failure to buy the world's best players, who would obviously jump at the chance to sign for the team that had dominated Europe a mere three decades earlier, fans quickly lost patience.

"Demonstrating the cool-headed pragmatism that has endeared them to the footballing public, the Liverpool faithful demanded Roy's replacement be an exciting young manager befitting the club's stature."

The article continued: "Setting the time circuits to 1991, the club's executives piled into the waiting DeLorean and floored it to '88, returning with a fresh-faced and energetic Kenny Dalglish, ready to usher in a new era of dominance spearheaded by future club legend Andy Carroll, a shrewd purchase at just £35m.

"Unfortunately, however, Alex Ferguson and Wayne Rooney recovered the time machine, went back to 1991, stole the Sports Almanac and brutally laid out Jan Molby at the 'Enchantment Under the Sea' dance.

"This left the club with no option but to drag present day Kenny out of the pub and into the dugout, skewing the timeline and culminating in an underwhelming eight-place finish and Kenny's departure (again)."

Liverpool slumped to 19th place during Hodgson's regime, while his successor Dalglish led Liverpool to the FA Cup final in 2012 having won the League Cup a few months earlier.

Last season's Champions League finalists are a point behind Premier League leaders Manchester City with nine games remaining, while Fulham are loitering in the relegation zone having already sacked Slavisa Jokanovic and Claudio Ranieri as manager this season, Scott Parker currently the interim boss.

Young Foxes Defeated By Fulham In U18 Premier League

Dempsey Arlott-John struck for the Leicester City's Under-18s in a 2-1 defeat by Fulham at Motspur Park on Saturday afternoon.

The young Foxes, who were denied a place in the FA Youth Cup semi-finals by Watford last week, went behind to a Fabio Carvalho strike in the 36th minute.

While Arlott-John levelled the scored in the 51st minute, latching onto Harrison Myring's assist, the Cottagers ended up sealing victory courtesy of Sonny Hilton's effort with 19 minutes to play.

As a result, City's youngsters drop down to eighth in the U18 Premier League South standings, with 20 points from 16 matches, ahead of the visit of Aston Villa on Saturday 16 March (11am GMT kick-off).

Meanwhile, in the Under-23s' 1-0 defeat by Manchester City on Sunday, two stars of the Under-18s side this season - Sidnei Tavares, George Heaven - appeared from the bench.

Luke Thomas, on the other hand, an enterprising left-back who has captained the Under-18s this season, added to his substitute appearances at Under-23s level with a maiden start for the Development Squad last month.

Starting in a more advanced position on the left wing to accommodate Calvin Ughelumba, Thomas played a key role in City's goal, scored by Zimbabwe senior international Admiral Muskwe, another product of the Club's Academy, during a 1-1 draw at Norwich City in the Premier League Cup.

One of three nominees for City's 2017/18 Academy Player of the Season last May, missing out to eventual winner Conor Tee, Thomas was also named in an England Under-18s squad in November.

The details...

City: Stolarczyk (c), Kranthove, Husek, Elewa-Ikpakwu, Murch, Gyamfi, J. Gyamfi, Fitzhugh, Myring, James, Ewing, Arlott-John

Subs not used: Barrett, Sams, Russ

Goal: Arlott-John 51'

Loan Round-Up

A couple of our loanees were in action this weekend as both Marek Rodák and Jón Dagur Thorsteinsson picked up positive results.

The Slovakian stopper claimed a huge win at the bottom of the Championship with a 3-2 victory over Blackburn.

Two goals from Semi Ajayi and Ryan Williams' strike ensured Rotherham stayed amongst the pack in the race for a Championship status. Charlie Mulgrew and Amari'i Bell strikes were in-vain as The Millers held on to go level on points with Reading.

Elsewhere, in Denmark, Thorsteinsson was influential in Vendsyssel's draw with Aarhus. The winger was shown a yellow card in the first half but responded with an assist to move his side into 12th.

Kevin McDonald shows the never-say-die attitude that is just what Fulham and Scott Parker need

The latest Whites news concerns the return of the midfielder

Kevin McDonald has made a welcome return to the Fulham team in the last two weeks.

The Scottish international, who played a huge part in the Whites' promotion to the Premier League via the Championship play-offs last season, has not been able to have the Premier League impact he would have liked.

McDonald picked up an ankle injury during the 1-0 defeat to Huddersfield at the start of November, keeping him out until Boxing Day, when he played eight minutes against Wolves.

Claudio Ranieri then did not call upon him again until the defeat to Southampton - the Italian's final game in charge, but under caretaker manager Scott Parker, the midfielder was handed a start in the 2-1 defeat to west London rivals Chelsea on Sunday.

And his "never give up" spirit is just what Parker and the rest of the Fulham team need in the last two months of the season as they fight for their Premier League status.

McDonald admitted he would have left Craven Cottage in January, but that was never on his mind.

He said: "It has been a long, tough season. It has been hard but I never gave up. I easily could have. I had plenty of options to leave in January but I stuck by it.

"I have got faith in myself, I always have done. It is one of those things. If a new manager does not want you to play, that is life. I am just happy to be back on the pitch and playing.

"I came here two and a half years ago and played pretty much every game until this October just past. It is tough at times. But if you know me as a person I am not going to let it get me down.

"There are much more important things in life than football, it is not the be all and end all. I trained hard every day and was a laugh around the place. Of course if it disappointing not playing but you have got to get through the bad times to get the good times.

"Whenever called upon, I will be ready to play. Me and Scotty played together and he knew the way I am as a player and a person. I am a leader on the pitch.

"He knows it is a quieter team so you need people to step up and organise. I am happy to bring that whenever called upon."

Fulham take swipe at Liverpool over Roy Hodgson ahead of key clash this month

The Whites' official matchday programme for Sunday's 2-1 defeat to Chelsea laid into the Reds and their fans for their treatment of their former boss

Fulham have taken a swipe at Liverpool and their fans in their official matchday programme ahead of the club's meeting at Craven Cottage on March 17.

The Reds travel to south west London for a key clash in both their attempts to win the Premier League and the hosts' efforts to stay up.

Liverpool missed the chance to return to the summit of the table when they drew 0-0 with Everton in the Merseyside derby on Sunday, a result which leaves them in second, a point behind Manchester City .

Earlier in the day, Fulham lost 2-1 to local rivals Chelsea at Craven Cottage to remain in 19th place, 10 points adrift of safety.

And - as reported by the Liverpool Echo - in the matchday programme for that Chelsea clash, a regular, admittedly tongue-in-cheek section called "The List" mentioned three people who could have been better served had they not left the club.

The trio included Roy Hodgson, who left Fulham for Liverpool in the summer of 2010 after guiding the Whites to the Europa League final.

Hodgson had a disastrous spell at Anfield, during which he saw the club plummet into the relegation zone amid mounting fan unrest.

He was eventually sacked after six months in charge in January 2011, and replaced by club legend Kenny Dalglish.

"He (Hodgson) was given a frosty reception on his subsequent appointment at Liverpool, with fans being unmoved by his success with smaller provincial clubs like Inter Milan," read the article.

"Realising that Roy was not going to win the league immediately and angered by his failure to buy the world's best players, who would obviously jump at the chance to sign for the team that had dominated Europe a mere three decades earlier, fans quickly lost patience.

"Demonstrating the cool-headed pragmatism that has endeared them to the footballing public, the Liverpool faithful demanded Roy's replacement be an exciting young manager befitting the club's stature.

"Setting the time circuits to 1991, the club's executives piled into the waiting DeLorean and floored it to '88, returning with a fresh-faced and energetic Kenny Dalglish, ready to usher in a new era of dominance spearheaded by future club legend Andy Carroll, a shrewd purchase at just £35m.

"Unfortunately, however, Alex Ferguson and Wayne Rooney recovered the time machine, went back to 1991, stole the Sports Almanac and brutally laid out Jan Molby at the 'Enchantment Under the Sea' dance.

"This left the club with no option but to drag present day Kenny out of the pub and into the dugout, skewing the timeline and culminating in an underwhelming eighth-place finish and Kenny's departure (again)."

Dalglish actually guided Liverpool to sixth in that 2010/11 season, with the eighth-place finish coming in 2011/12, when he also won the League Cup and lost the FA Cup final.

He was replaced by Brendan Rodgers in the summer of 2012.

Fulham brilliantly troll Liverpool with hilarious matchday programme article

A tongue-in-cheek article from Fulham's matchday programme has mocked the title-chasing Reds

Fulham have laid down the gauntlet to Liverpool ahead of their upcoming Premier League meeting, taking a swipe at the club for snatching former manager Roy Hodgson from their clutches.

The two sides go toe-to-toe in the capital on 17 March, with the Cottagers looking to perform a miracle to escape relegation and Liverpool seeking to end a 29-year wait for a league title.

In the matchday programme for Fulham's 2-1 defeat to Chelsea last weekend, a feature identified three figures who would have been better served staying at Craven Cottage - one of which was Hodgson.

Now at Crystal Palace, Hodgson endured a disastrous spell at Anfield and was eventually sacked in January 2011 after just six months in charge and Fulham's programme mocked his stint at the club.

"He [Hodgson] was given a frosty reception on his subsequent appointment at Liverpool, with fans being unmoved by his success with smaller provincial clubs like Inter Milan," the article read.

Wow: Fulham launch pointless & sarcastic attack on Liverpool fans

In a strange turn of events, Fulham have decided to launch a bizarre attack on the Anfield faithful.

The Official Fulham FC Matchday Programme for Sunday's 2-1 defeat to Chelsea ran a regular bit called "The List". There, they had a think about three former Fulham managers that perhaps should have been given more time at the helm.

Among those considered was "football mastermind" Roy Hodgson, who left the Cottagers in 2010 for a woeful, and thankfully short, stint at Liverpool.

But, their account of Hodgson's tenure at our club seems to have been designed as a dig at us. We'll be hosting them in a week on Sunday; this seems like quite an odd way to treat your visitors, doesn't it?

Here's their unhinged perspective on how Roy really got on at Anfield...

"He was given a frosty reception on his subsequent appointment at Liverpool.

"Fans were unmoved by his success with smaller provincial clubs like Inter Milan.

"This left the club with no option but to drag present day Kenny out of the pub and into the dugout, skewing the timeline and culminating in an underwhelming eight-place finish and Kenny's departure (again)."

What this taunting by Fulham fails to mention is a record of 13 wins in 31 games, a catalogue of defeats playing horrendous football, and losing on penalties at home to Northampton Town in the League Cup.

Those six months of Hodgson were awful times for us, not to mention the hellish ownership of Hicks and Gillett.

Anyway, thank you Fulham, we'll do our talking on the pitch if you don't mind?

Former Bristol City defender ahead of Lee Johnson in betting to be permanent Fulham boss

Two former Robins players figure highly

Two men with big Bristol City connections are currently named in the running for the full-time permanent Fulham position.

The first is Lee Johnson, who was explained as being liked by the power brokers in West London over the weekend.

As we reported yesterday: Johnson is unlikely to go to Craven Cottage in the summer, but that hasn't stopped the Robins boss being linked with the permanent post at Craven Cottage.

The City boss is gradually winning more and more suitors having transformed the Robins into a force in the Championship.

David Moyes while he was at West Ham (Image: Alex James/JMP)

But Johnson is superseded by former Robins centre-back David Moyes in the odds. With Johnson currently a 13/1 shot for the post, Moyes is 7/2 second favourite.

Current interim manager Scott Parker is the outright market leader for the post but if the former England and Tottenham midfielder does not impress in the Cottagers' final nine games of their Premier League season then Moyes appears likely to assume the role of favourite.

We recently spoke to the member of the 1986 "Wembley Wonders" Robins team, who said that he would 'never say never' to managing Bristol City at some stage.

According to our sources, Moyes was interviewed for the Stoke City post recently before Nathan Jones was eventually appointed at the Bet365 Stadium.

Our understanding is that Moyes is ready to return to management but is hoping to land a Premier League post after a productive short spell in charge of West Ham.

Fulham lie 19th in the top-flight, 10 points from safety and look highly likely to be back in the Championship next campaign, but which league will Bristol City's head coach be working in?

Current odds - via The Sack Race and Paddy Power :

Scott Parker - 2/1

David Moyes - 7/2

David Wagner - 5/1

Claude Puel - 11/2

Michael O'Neill - 7/1

Chris Coleman - 11/1

Slavisa Jokanovic - 11/1

Lee Johnson - 13/1

Steve Clarke - 14/1

Gary Rowett - 14/1

Ndidi Targets Leicester Victory Against Fulham

Leicester City of England midfielder, Wilfred Onyinyen Ndidi has set his sight on returning to winning ways with his club this weekend, when they play at home against Fulham in the English Premier League.

Ndidi expressed his disappointment with Leicester's 2-1 loss to Watford on Sunday, but footballlive.ng can report he is already thinking ahead to the next game.

The former Racing Genk of Belgium star took to social media to reveal his thoughts, as he acknowledged that last weekend's defeat was a huge blow for The Fioxes, but added that they will keep fighting to get things back on track, with only nine matches to go in the season.

The defeat was their seventh in nine games, and The Foxes dropped to the 11th spot in the log after gathering 35 points from 29 games.

This comes after the club sacked Claude Puel and hired Brendan Rodgers in an attempt to halt the poor run, but their fortune is yet to change, much to the dismay of Ndidi and his teammates.

However, the Super Eagles star, who has two goals in 29 league games for Leicester, believes they can turn the tide when they host Fulham on March 9, as he Tweeted: "We keep working."

Next Fulham manager: Scott Parker the front runner for the hot seat at Craven Cottage

The 38-year-old is currently the favourite for the permanent job in SW6

Scott Parker is the front runner to be named as the next permanent Fulham manager according to the bookies.

The 38-year-old was named as caretaker by Shahid Khan after sacking Claudio Ranieri after just 103 days in charge at Craven Cottage and took charge of his first game against Chelsea on Sunday.

Fulham lost that match 2-1 but there were already clear differences in the way he had the players playing for him as well as the style of play the side were playing.

Ryan Sessegnon was back in the side while Tom Cairney was in his favoured central role and Fulham were unlucky to come out of the game with no points.

The board at Fulham are keen for some stability and see Parker as an ideal candidate for the permanent role next season should he do well in the next nine games, although that won't necessarily be judged on just results.

It's a view the bookies echo - at the moment the former Fulham captain is 2/1 to be named permanent manager at the club, while former head coach Slavisa Jokanovic is priced at 11/1 in what would be a head-turning appointment after he was sacked only in November.

Here's who else is on the bookies list of potential next managers as listed by The Sack Race.

Next Fulham Manager Odds:

Scott Parker - 2/1

David Moyes - 7/2

David Wagner - 5/1

Claude Puel - 11/2

Michael O'Neill - 7/1

Chris Coleman - 11/1

Slavisa Jokanovic - 11/1

Lee Johnson - 13/1

teve Clarke - 14/1

Gary Rowett -14/1

Mark Hughes - 19/1

Brian McDermott - 20/1

Alan Pardew - 20/1

Mark Warburton - 20/1

Harry Redknapp - 22/1

Louis van Gaal - 22/1

Avram Grant - 25/1

Kevin Nolan  - 25/1

Alan Curbishley - 35/1

Tom Cairney's backing should make Fulham consider hiring Scott Parker permanently

Following Fulham's hard-fought 2-1 defeat at the hands of Chelsea, club captain Tom Cairney delivered his verdict on Scott Parker's first match in charge.

Cairney strongly backed the 38-year-old to take over permanently at Craven Cottage, an opinion that the club's hierarchy should take very seriously as they consider their options come next season.

In comments reported by the Evening Standard, Cairney said the introduction of Parker had returned pride to Fulham.

"If that is what he can do in a few days I wonder what he could do in six months, eight months?" Cairney said. "I would like to see him given a chance. I speak on behalf of everyone, he is so highly regarded at the club. He has been immense."

Naturally, Cairney would be expected to laud the changes ushered in by Parker. Under Claudio Ranieri, the club captain was shunted out to the right wing, thrown high up the pitch behind the strikers, or even dropped to the bench — essentially, everywhere except his best position of central midfield.

On the weekend, with the comfort and freedom of his preferred role, Cairney bossed the show in the centre of the park. His trademark passing style returned along with his wonderful close control and ability to take on players at will, nutmegging and dancing around the Chelsea defenders with glee.

The simple, yet inspired, decision to return Cairney to central midfield is a perfect encapsulation of why Parker deserves a chance at the permanent job. A player like Cairney is integral to Fulham's present and future, and keeping him and the likes of Ryan Sessegnon happy is a top priority for the club.

At a moment when Fulham need a return to the goodwill of last season, Parker is the perfect man to re-instill confidence among the players and implement a style that incorporates the best attributes of both Ranieri and Jokanovic.

Parker's 4-2-3-1 formation paid dividends at the Cottage and seemed to get the best out of the group of players at Fulham's disposal.

And as the manager inspires vital players like Cairney, it would be worth giving Parker the benefit of the doubt, and Fulham should begin seriously considering him for the permanent job if the impressive performances continue.

Undoubtedly, it is incredibly early days and the new manager bounce can be deceptive (look at Ranieri's 3-2 win in his debut), but Parker truly seems to understand Fulham and understand the squad.

The value of that strong connection will be valuable in Fulham's future, and Scott Parker should not be immediately discounted from taking over the job after May.

Savage Fulham take brutal swipe at Liverpool fans over treatment of former boss Roy Hodgson

The Cottagers poked fun at Reds' fans living off their past glory in the club's official matchday programme for Sunday's clash with Chelsea

Fulham have taken an astonishing swipe at Liverpool fans over the treatment of former boss Roy Hodgson in their official matchday programme.

The 71-year-old was appointed Liverpool manager after guiding the Cottagers to a shock Europa League final in 2010.

But Hodgson was sacked by Anfield chiefs just six months into his reign, leaving the Reds 12th in the Premier League. He was replaced by club legend Kenny Dalglish, who helped steady the ship.

Hodgson is proving his managerial reputation at Crystal Palace, who look set to avoid a second successive top-flight relegation under the former England boss.

And despite Hodgson leaving Liverpool eight years ago, Fulham's matchday programme for their 2-1 defeat to Chelsea on Sunday named the veteran manager in The List, a feature section which highlights three people who would have fared better had they stayed at Craven Cottage.

The article, which will add anticipation to Liverpool's trip to Fulham on March 17, reads: "He (Hodgson) was given a frosty reception on his subsequent appointment at Liverpool, with fans being unmoved by his success with smaller provincial clubs like Inter Milan.

Kevin McDonald admits January offers after Rangers reportedly opened talks

Kevin McDonald was strongly linked with a move to Rangers in January.

Fulham midfielder Kevin McDonald has told Football.London that he wanted to stay in the January transfer window amid links to Rangers.

McDonald, 30, was a mainstay of the Fulham side which won promotion to the Premier League last season, racking up 43 appearances in all competitions under Slavisa Jokanovic.

The Scot started the season in the Fulham midfield, but really fell out of favour under Claudio Ranieri, playing just twice under the Italian.

When the January transfer window arrived, the experienced midfielder was strongly linked with a move away from Craven Cottage, especially to Rangers.

Football.London reported that Rangers had held preliminary discussions about signing McDonald, but no move materialised for the ex-Dundee ace to return to Scotland.

McDonald returned to the Fulham starting line-up last week and was kept in the team by interim boss Scott Parker following Ranieri's exit.

It now seems that McDonald has a part to play at Craven Cottage once again, and he has discussed his feelings in January.

McDonald admitted that he had options in January, with Rangers seemingly one of them, but he chose to stick it out at Fulham and fight for his place, meaning the Gers may not have much chance of a deal if they try again this summer.

"It has been a long, tough season. It has been hard but I never gave up," said McDonald. "I easily could have. I had plenty of options to leave in January but I stuck by it. I have got faith in myself, I always have done. It is one of those things. If a new manager does not want you to play, that is life. I am just happy to be back on the pitch and playing," he added.

Former Fulham Winger Travelled To Glasgow To Talk About A Move To Rangers: Did Gerrard Miss Out?

According to the Swedish media outlet, Fotboll Direkt, Rangers met with 27-year-old winger Alexander Kačaniklić in January. The winger arrived at Glasgow with a view of joining them on a free transfer. However, he went on to join Swedish side Hammarby later on.

Rangers did decent business in January as they secured the services of Steven Davis, Glen Kamara and Jermain Defoe. To go with that, they also secured the signing of Jordan Jones who is set to join Ibrox after the end of the ongoing season.

Gerrard must have seen Kačaniklić from close quarters as the winger was part of Liverpool's youth academy from 2007-2010. He went on to join Fulham before he could make senior team appearances for the Reds. Down south, the 27-year-old played for the likes of Fulham, Watford and Burnley (on loan) before he moved to Nantes in 2016.

Kačaniklić is a 19 time Sweden international and the fact that he was available for free might have made him an exciting signing. However, in hindsight, Rangers does have two decent options on the left wing in the form of Ryan Kent and Glenn Middleton. Rangers also have Eros Grezda and Jamie Murphy who have missed the chunk of the season due to injury. Moreover, Jordan Jones is going to join the club in the summer.

Now Rangers have Kent on loan, but there have been enough indications from the player that he wants to stay and Rangers would be better of signing Kent. Kačaniklić is an exciting talent, and his experience would have come in handy. Maybe he could have had a role to play this season if he was signed in January as Grezda and Murphy have been struggling with injuries.

However, you don't sign a player permanently to use him for six months and then just let him stay on the bench for the remainder of his contract. Therefore even though Kačaniklić was available on a free, one can understand why the Bears didn't make a move for him in January.

Rangers would be hoping that they can negotiate a good enough deal with Liverpool for Kent and a lot could depend on the English winger in the upcoming season. If Rangers miss out on the Liverpool winger, then they might feel that they could have done with the Sweden international. However, Gerrard and Rangers don't have a future predicting crystal ball, and they cannot know how things would pan out. So one has to say they took the right call by not bringing in another player on the wage bill who would have found it hard to find game time.
