I recently brought a lap top. When I am using it, I keep it plugged into the mains. Someone has told me that this is bad practice and will shorten the life of the battery. Is this fact or fiction?

As with mobile phones the battery should occasionally be allowed to run low before recharging this does prolong the life.

WhiteJC

the thing that really kills the battery is letting it run down a little bit and then recharging it, best to let it run down completely

Lighthouse

Although if you let it run down completely and forget about it for a year it bags its own bags and leaves, so you are just left with a memory what was, but is no longer. Until you can access it again with another battery.

The above IS NOT A LEGAL DOCUMENT. It is an opinion.

We may yet hear the horse talk.

I can stand my own despair but not others hope

Don't know what type of laptop you bought but I have a Sony and they have a 'battery care mode' which keeps the battery charged at 50%. They claim this prolongs the battery working life.

I wish that Sony used the same technology to extend the life of their computers. I have two crashed and burned Sony Vaio's laptops in a pile, but the batteries are the only thing that still works... :046: I'll never buy that pile of shite ever again.
If you wake up in the morning and nothing hurts, you are most likely dead

It is indeed better to either use your battery or to plug it in (without the battery). I haven't been doing so and because of that, my battery (after two years) has a life of 4 hours instead of the 8 it had 2 years ago.

So, if you can I would make sure your battery is allowed to run flat.
