Marco Silva set for Lisbon trip as Fulham push for final answer
Fulham are entering the decisive phase of the Marco Silva saga. Portuguese reports are now claiming the manager is expected in Lisbon this week for talks with Benfica.

Until now, most of the movement had been indirect. Conversations through representatives, growing optimism at Benfica, and Fulham trying to convince Silva to stay.

Yesterday, we covered how the dynamic around José Mourinho could influence his situation. And fresh Tuesday reports suggest the situation is now becoming far more concrete.

According to A Bola, Silva is expected to be in Lisbon during the middle of the week and should hold a meeting with Benfica which could prove decisive for his future.

Silva now close to making decision
There is now broad agreement in Portugal that Marco Silva's answer is coming very soon.

Record report the Fulham manager will decide his future no later than Thursday. The newspaper says Silva does not want the situation dragging on and will soon inform Fulham whether he intends to renew or leave.

After Fulham's 2-0 win over Newcastle United at the weekend, Silva himself effectively confirmed the urgency around the process.

"It won't go beyond this week," he said, while also stressing he does not like to "feed soap operas".

A Bola add another important detail. Silva could travel to Lisbon without a final decision already made and potentially use the meeting with Benfica to clarify the final points before deciding his next move.

So looks like a negotiation entering its final stage.

Benfica growing more confident
The tone in Portugal around Benfica's chances feels stronger than before.

A Bola describe Silva as being "very tempted" by the possibility of taking over at Benfica, even while Fulham continue pressuring him with a major renewal proposal and promises about future investment.

That emotional aspect keeps appearing in the Portuguese coverage. After five years at Fulham and almost a decade coaching in England, Silva is clearly weighing two very different futures.

Benfica are also reportedly willing to make a major financial effort by Portuguese standards. The newspaper says Silva considers a long-term contract essential and Benfica are open to that structure, although there is still no final agreement.

The Mourinho situation continues hovering over everything, though. Benfica still officially have Mourinho under contract for another season and the uncertainty around his expected move to Real Madrid remains unresolved, as we covered yesterday.

A Bola again stress Benfica internally already act as though Mourinho is lost, but formally nothing is completed yet. That lingering uncertainty is still creating caution on Silva's side.

Fulham still trying to convince Silva to stay
Fulham, meanwhile, are not backing down. The latest reports continue to insist the London club are pushing hard to keep Marco Silva and are trying to sell him a more ambitious future in the Premier League.

According to Record, Fulham's renewal proposal would extend Silva's deal by another four years and raise his salary to around €7.2m (£6.1m) net per season.

The same report says he currently earns around €5.8m (£4.9m), although bonuses can already push that figure towards €7.5m (£6.3m).

A Bola also reinforce that Fulham's pitch is not just financial. The club continue promising investment in the squad and better conditions to compete for bigger objectives in the Premier League.

As we covered earlier, Portuguese reports have repeatedly suggested Silva felt frustrated by the level of investment last season and wanted stronger guarantees before committing long-term again.

Either way, Marco Silva is expected in Lisbon now. So we all should have an answer by the end of the week.

Fulham need to improve offer by €5m for signing – Rule change could force club to sell
Fulham are back in the mix to sign Galatasaray's Roland Sallai in the summer window

Marco Silva had Kenny Tete and Timothy Castagne as the two right-backs at his disposal this season.

Fulham seem to have identified the need to strengthen this position since January and had identified Sallai as a target.

In fact, the Premier League side made a concrete attempt to secure the 29-year-old's services in the winter market.

Fulham failed in January
That's according to TRT Spor, who cover Fulham's failed attempt in the last window and their stance for the summer.

The London club had offered €10m for Roland Sallai in January and the Süper Lig winners turned it down.

Marco Silva's side continue to have the Hungary international on their agenda for next season.

Galatasaray invested €6m to sign him from SC Freiburg in September 2024 and are really happy with him.

They are reluctant to sell him but the new rule change for the 2026/27 Süper Lig season could force them to part ways with Sallai.

As per the new rule, a Turkish club can't have more than 14 foreign players in their squad, of which four players must be born on or after January 2023.

Therefore, the Turkish champions seem to have softened their stance on the Hungarian and now want at least €15m to sell him.

In other words, Fulham need to improve their January offer by at least €5m to secure his services. There's no indication or suggestion of the English club planning to return with an improved bid.

Last week, Sport Witness relayed news of Nottingham Forest's interest in the fullback. The same source also stated Galatasaray are demanding €25m to sanction a summer move.

Contract, value and agent info
Roland Sallai will have two years left on his contract in over a month's time. His value, as per Transfermarkt, is €12m.

The highest was €16m in July 2021, when he was at SC Freiburg and agency The.Team are representing the Fulham target.

What the Jacksonville Jaguars tell us about Fulham's future
Why Shad Khan (finally) shook up the Jags front office and why he might do the same at Fulham.

I've been doing a deep dive on our owner as part of research on his investment in Fulham, and in so doing came across a story about the Jaguars that could be prescient about Fulham's future in terms of our manager and front office situation.

Did you know: at the start of 2025 Shad was forced to shake up his long-time loyal, but underachieving executive team because he wanted/needed a top-level coach and his first-choice coaching candidates refused to commit to the Jags because they didn't want to work for incompetents?

What does this mean for Fulham? Well, I think it means we are potentially at a similar crossroads because, as the Jax saga and clear push to try and keep Marco show, the Khans will ultimately make changes to get the manager/coach they think they need to achieve their hopes and dreams.

Unfortunately, the Jaguars also show that - as Fulham fans know (from the departure of Scott Parker) - that this kind of managerial change can be pretty ugly because Shad and Tony have a habit of sticking by undeserving execs for way too long.

The Jacksonville lowdown
The crown jewel of the Khans' sporting empire is the Jacksonville Jaguars. Shad Khan bought the Jaguars for $770m in 2011 and the NFL team is now worth $5.6bn, according to Forbes.

Incredibly, Shad has made nearly $5bn on his investment despite terrible on-field performance under his leadership. Since Khan bought the team (up until the start of last year), the Jaguars won 64 games and lost 148 times - the worst record in the NFL for that time period.

(https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!eiEX!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7e1aa26f-0fa6-481e-952b-43af0f1e13c9_843x813.png)

The knock on Shad is that, even though he was willing to spend money, he was too patient and unwilling to move on from his execs even when things were not working. Sound familiar?

(https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!hoTa!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F21d0b74c-f72b-495f-8e3d-0fbd610265cb_715x178.png)

After the 2024 season, after the team went four and 13, Khan had enough and decided to fire his coach, Doug Pederson, and get a new one to fix things. At the same time, Khan also inexplicably decided to keep on board the general manager, Trent Baalke, who had presided over all that losing.

Amazingly, fans in Jacksonville, FL (a place not exactly known for activism) couldn't take it any more and called for Khan to fire the guy. Some even paid for an airplane banner to fly over and make the point.

(https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!Bob5!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fe5578569-d991-483d-82c2-030ee0ef1f26_598x786.png)

The fan protest did not move the Khans. What did was the fact that the coaches they wanted to come to Jacksonville balked at working for incompetents. The two leading coach candidates, Ben Johnson and Liam Coen, refused the Khans' overtures to join the team.

(https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!c5MR!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa8d6becf-3a4f-43b9-a486-6dcc50ea5bcd_498x415.png)

This was the straw that broke the incompetents' back - Shad decided to fire his guy - Baalke - to get his man: Coen.

(https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!hDlB!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F46a08b56-28a8-4b40-bef4-d6538979a6a0_684x872.png)

The good news - for Fulham - is that following Shad's decision to move on from Baalke, the Jags went and had a fantastic season under Coen and went 13-4 last year and made the playoffs. Shad was also lauded by the press for his hires in the new front office, which now includes a 35 year-old wunderkind (data first) general manager called James Gladstone. Shad is happy about this new direction for the Jags:

"I've liked pretty much everything about it," Khan said. "The results, again, speak for themselves. What James has really brought in, which is in a way common sense – but certainly we weren't doing it – was you look at the attributes of a football player – the speed, the weight, the height, brain power, their processing speed, how they are as a team member and are they the glue that's going to hold the rest of that?

"That ability to anticipate that and really put it in the mix, then practicing it and you see the results ... I think that's really the X-factor on what the team as a whole, with James' leadership, is doing."

Clearly, right now, the Khans want to keep Marco. To do so they are going to have to take away power from Ali Mac (and improve the transfer process) to keep him. And, if Marco does move on, the kind of managers that the Khans seem likely to try and hire - cutting-edge, sought-after ones - are also likely to raise the same issues and be reluctant to join Fulham unless things change in the front office. And, Shad has seen that making this kind of move pays off.

Oh, one last thing: don't expect Shad to move on from Tony. Working with Tony is really the main reason why Shad owns the club (and his other sporting interests) - more on that later.

But, I hope - based on what just happened in Jacksonville, that Shad will be ready to make changes (and hire around Tony) to get his man - if the managers he wants to get demand them.

Fulham transfer hopes boosted as player has 'closed the book' on time at club
Fulham's hopes of signing Malik Tillman from Bayer Leverkusen this summer may have been handed a boost, as he considers his time at the German side to be over.

Sport BILD report on the forward today, in what could be a busy summer for Leverkusen when it comes to departures.

Tillman wants to leave Leverkusen
The newspaper explains that Leverkusen paid €117m for Malik Tillman and various other signings last summer. But all of them were hardly used by manager Kasper Hjulmand this season.

That's seen as a clear sign of how poorly the German club and the manager have gelled. And it will have consequences this summer.

Several of the players who were signed are 'dissatisfied' and are seriously considering exits. The club are looking at moving players on too. Indeed, sporting director Simon Rolfes hinted as much in recent comments.

"There will be movement in the squad this summer. We're trying to inject some new energy and strengthen the team," he said.

Much will depend on the new manager, but Malik Tillman has 'largely closed the book' on his Leverkusen. The club's management have already been informed of this. The 23-year-old wants to leave and use the World Cup to strengthen his market position.

Fulham express interest
Sport BILD report that Fulham have already 'expressed interest' in signing him this summer. Leverkusen are open to a deal if they can recoup the €35m they paid PSV Eindhoven last summer.

That tallies with recent reports Sport Witness have covered on the player. The last of those, last month, stated that Fulham were tempting the player to move to the Premier League.

Now it appears that the American has made a decision and he wants out. The question is whether those in charge at Craven Cottage want to pay the €35m asking fee. If they're open to that, this is a deal which could be done quickly in the coming months.

Fulham plotting raid to sign £10m star who West Ham are now prepared to sell
Fulham are keen on signing an "incredible" player, with West Ham United now prepared to cash-in, having been relegated from the Premier League.

Despite running out 3-0 winners against Leeds United at the London Stadium on the final day of the Premier League season, West Ham will be playing Championship football in the 2026-27 campaign, as Tottenham Hotspur were able to edge out Everton 1-0 at home.

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has since explained the Hammers are now facing a "very challenging" period financially, and may be forced into several player sales out of sheer desperation.

"So I think the owners, and David Sullivan does have wealth, Daniel Kretinsky does have wealth. I guess they would have to be the main source of funding on top of player sales and West Ham do have some players who would be coveted by other Premier League clubs as well as those on the continent."

Jarrod Bowen and El Hadji Malick Diouf are two key players who have already been attracting interest, with Crystal Palace keen, while Fulham have also started planning for the summer transfer window, despite the uncertainty surrounding Marco Silva's future.

Last week, it was revealed Silva's side have set their sights on Middlesbrough star Hayden Hackney, who is set to be available for £25m, and they are also looking to raid the Irons for a defender.

West Ham prepared to sell "incredible" star with Fulham keen
According to a report from TEAMtalk, Fulham are now plotting a raid to sign Aaron Wan-Bissaka, with West Ham now willing to sanction a departure for around £10m, given that the right-back is one of their high earners, raking in £90k-a-week.

Everton, Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United and Sunderland are also keen on signing the full-back, with it starting to look likely Wan-Bissaka will be one of the Hammers' first major sales.

Silva is already well-stocked at right-back, with Kenny Tete and Timothy Castagne to choose from, although the latter player's contract is set to expire at the end of next season.

As such, it may be about time the Cottagers brought in a new right-back, and the West Ham star could be an exciting signing, having been lauded as "incredible" by content creator Dev Bajwa.

Despite West Ham being relegated from the Premier League, the DR Congo international also impressed with his ability to win back possession, averaging 1.7 interceptions per 90, which is more than any Fulham player, barring fellow full-back Antonee Robinson.

Wan-Bissaka's availability for around just £10m is an added bonus, as that could be considered a bargain fee, considering the 28-year-old is very experienced in the Premier League, making 233 appearances in the competition, across spells with Manchester United, Crystal Palace and the Irons.

Fulham 'May Once Again Approach' Star Aston Villa Expressed Interest In
Fulham 'may once again approach' Galatasaray for Roland Sallai, a player Aston Villa expressed interest in earlier this month.

The Villans have enjoyed a successful season under Unai Emery, winning the Europa League trophy and securing Champions League football.

Emery will want to add more depth to his squad in the summer and could look to invest in a right-back to provide competition to Matty Cash, especially with the extra demands of the Champions League.

His eyes appear to have been drawn to Turkey for an option in the shape of Sallai, with it suggested just earlier this month that Villa 'sent an interest letter' to Galatasaray over a potential move in the summer.

There is more Premier League interest in Sallai though, who has been popular with English sides in recent windows.

According to Turkish broadcaster TRT Spor (via En Son Haber), Fulham are showing interest in Sallai and may make another approach.

Fulham tried to snap Sallai up in the winter transfer window and put in a €10m offer, which Galatasaray swiftly rejected.

Galatasaray want to receive a bid of at least €15m before they will look at letting the player go.

Fulham were not alone in their winter window interest in Sallai as Liverpool also considered him as a viable target.

Another factor preventing Galatasaray from doing business at that time came from not wanting to lose the player in the middle of the season, something which is not the case now.

Sallai arrived at Galatasaray from Bundesliga outfit Freiburg in the summer of 2024 and put pen to paper on a four-year contract, which will keep him at the club until 2028.

This term, the 29-year-old played a key role in Galatasaray's Super Lig title win, making 30 appearances, while also contributing to four goal involvements as a right-back.

Sallai's current contract runs for two more years at RAMS Park and it gives Galatasaray the upper hand in any transfer negotiations in the upcoming window.

The player is also not actively pushing to leave Galatasaray and could be happy to stay in Turkey despite Premier League interest.

Spurs, Newcastle, Fulham and Sunderland keen on relegated star
Tottenham Lead Growing Chase for Aaron Wan-Bissaka After West Ham Drop

West Ham United's relegation has triggered uncertainty across the squad, and Aaron Wan-Bissaka increasingly looks destined to become one of the first major departures from the London Stadium. According to TeamTalk, Tottenham Hotspur, Everton, Newcastle United, Fulham and Sunderland are all monitoring the experienced defender ahead of a pivotal summer window.

There is little surprise that interest is accelerating quickly. Reliable, experienced and still among the strongest one-on-one defenders in English football, Wan-Bissaka suddenly represents rare value in an inflated market.

West Ham Prepare Major Reset
The wider backdrop is impossible to ignore. Relegation has forced West Ham into a significant rethink financially and structurally, with several senior players expected to leave as the club prepares for life in the Championship.

"Sources indicate the Hammers would likely accept a fee in the region of £10million."

That figure immediately changes the conversation. For a player with Premier League pedigree, European experience and international recognition with DR Congo, £10 million feels remarkably modest in the current market.

Wan-Bissaka only arrived at West Ham last year, yet circumstances have shifted dramatically. While he still has five years remaining on his deal, the club are reportedly eager to reduce a heavy wage bill and create flexibility for a broader rebuild.

Tottenham and Everton Circle
Tottenham's interest makes tactical sense. Defensive reliability has often been questioned in North London over recent seasons, and Wan-Bissaka offers security, athleticism and positional discipline. Spurs also value versatility across defensive systems, particularly with another demanding campaign ahead domestically and in Europe.

Everton's pursuit carries a more personal connection. David Moyes remains a longstanding admirer of Wan-Bissaka and reportedly views him as an ideal fit for the next stage of Everton's project.

"As we have consistently reported, Everton are prioritising the addition of a new right-back."

That pursuit may intensify quickly if West Ham show willingness to negotiate around the reported valuation.

Newcastle, Fulham and Sunderland Remain Alert
Newcastle's interest reflects the growing demands placed upon clubs competing across multiple fronts. Eddie Howe understands the importance of defensive depth, particularly with European football once again stretching his squad.

Fulham, meanwhile, continue searching for proven Premier League experience capable of strengthening Marco Silva's disciplined structure. Sunderland's involvement perhaps says most about the ambition now growing around the newly promoted side. Pursuing a player of Wan-Bissaka's stature signals serious intent.

His profile may rise even further in the coming months. Wan-Bissaka is expected to feature for DR Congo at the World Cup, adding fresh international exposure at precisely the moment transfer discussions are intensifying.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis
For Tottenham, Wan-Bissaka looks like a sensible addition. Spurs fans have watched the team struggle repeatedly in defensive transition, and a full-back with elite recovery speed and tackling ability would immediately improve stability. Some supporters may still question his attacking output, but many would prioritise defensive consistency after recent frustrations.

Newcastle fans would likely view this as smart squad building. With Champions League and domestic demands increasing again, depth matters enormously. Wan-Bissaka offers reliability and experience without requiring an enormous transfer fee.

Fulham supporters may see the move differently. There is admiration for his defensive strengths, particularly in one-on-one situations, but questions may remain about whether his style fully suits Fulham's possession phases under Marco Silva. Still, at £10 million, the risk feels relatively low.

Sunderland fans, meanwhile, would simply be energised by being linked with a player of this calibre. Competing for established Premier League names represents a major statement from a club determined to re-establish itself at the highest level.

Benfica limbo gives Fulham chance in Marco Silva battle – Manager wants concrete answers
Fulham may now have Benfica's own uncertainty working in their favour as Marco Silva prepares for a key meeting over his future.

The Portuguese manager has a major renewal offer from the London club, but he is also expected in Lisbon today as Benfica try to move the situation closer to a decision. The problem for the Portuguese side is that they still cannot offer him full clarity.

That is the main development from Wednesday's newspapers in Portugal.

Correio da Manhã, A Bola and Record all present Silva as Benfica's priority target. However, they also make it clear the dragged-out José Mourinho situation is now creating problems for the Lisbon club.

According to Correio da Manhã, the uncertainty over Mourinho's expected exit has caused concern inside Benfica. The issue was even discussed in a Monday meeting between Rui Costa and the club's football structure.

If Benfica take too long, leading coaches may start stepping away from the situation.

Marco Silva wants more Benfica clarity
Correio da Manhã say Marco Silva has an important meeting with Fulham on Thursday.

That is significant because Fulham have placed a four-year renewal offer on the table, with an annual salary of around €7.5m (£6.3m) net. That is a serious proposal, and Benfica cannot compete with those numbers directly.

The newspaper adds that Silva would like to go into that Fulham meeting with more concrete information about Benfica.

From Fulham's perspective, Benfica's delay could help. Silva is interested in the Lisbon challenge, but he still needs certainty around Mourinho's future, the sporting project and the conditions he would be walking into.

A Bola say Silva is expected in Lisbon today and should intensify contacts with Benfica in the coming days.

Silva has already said in England that his decision will be known by the end of the week. A Bola repeat that he remains open to either continuing at Fulham or leaving after five seasons.

Benfica have momentum and a problem
A Bola state the 48-year-old manager is receptive to the project. The challenge at the Estádio da Luz is described as seductive, and Benfica are prepared to make a significant financial effort within Portuguese football's reality.

The proposal being prepared by Rui Costa's board is unlikely to match Premier League money. However, it would include a long-term contract, which is one of Silva's demands.

Even so, Benfica's problem remains Mourinho. The current manager still has one year left on his contract. A Bola say the possibility of him leaving for Real Madrid is gaining strength, but nothing is settled yet.

Benfica cannot formally advance while that remains unresolved.

Limbo may push options away
Correio da Manhã go further on the damage this could cause. They say there is internal fear at Benfica that this limbo may push potential candidates away.

The issue is that whoever arrives could be made to feel like a second choice because the club are still waiting on Mourinho. That is already having an effect.

The newspaper says some coaches have become wary because of the uncertainty. Others, even without direct contact, have already taken the initiative to say no, including Jorge Jesus and Ruben Amorim.

That gives Fulham another possible advantage. If Silva feels Benfica cannot give him enough guarantees before his Fulham meeting, he may decide the safer route is to stay in England.

Record say Benfica are still working
Record's front-page report adds another layer. They say Rui Costa and Mário Branco are not standing still while they wait for Mourinho's future to be resolved. Benfica are already working on possible transfer targets and have contacts underway.

The aim is to move quickly once the new manager is confirmed.

Record say Benfica want to be able to announce signings only a few days after naming their coach. That urgency is partly because their season starts earlier than expected, on July 23rd.

Record add that Benfica do not expect many changes, but they are assessing approaches for players already in the squad. A major sale will be needed because of financial pressure after missing out on Champions League qualification.

Still, the new manager will have a say in those decisions. That is why the delay matters so much.

Milan route looks less threatening
A Bola also bring one useful detail from outside the Benfica-Fulham battle.

Marco Silva had been linked with Milan, but Gazzetta dello Sport now point to Andoni Iraola as the main candidate for the Italian club.

According to A Bola's summary, Iraola has already met Milan owner Gerry Cardinale, with a final decision expected within a week.

Iraola had also been linked with Benfica, but this development makes Milan look less like a direct threat for Silva.

So for now, the battle remains between Fulham and Benfica.

Liam Rosenior backed for Fulham job amid Marco Silva exit rumours: 'I've heard...'
Liam Rosenior could be the one to replace Marco Silva should the current Fulham boss choose to depart this summer.

That is according to former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who has heard from "two or three sources" that the former player could make a return to Craven Cottage.

Rosenior, who was most recently sacked by Chelsea in April after just 23 matches in charge, featured for the Cottagers between 2004 and 2007, and could now make a quick return to the Premier League.

Fulham may soon need a replacement for Silva, who is heavily linked with a switch to Benfica, and it will be extremely tricky to fill the Portuguese figure's boots in West London.

Liam Rosenior could make a dramatic Premier League return
Everton's former chief Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has shared what he's been hearing from close sources.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, Wyness said: "That's a difficult one. The name I've been hearing is Liam Rosenior, believe it or not, who has some Fulham history.

"That's one that I keep hearing from two or three sources. I don't think the Silva thing is tied either way at the moment. I think there's a genuine discussion going on either way, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him stay in the end.

"There's also been rumours about Fulham. There's Gary O'Neill, I've heard. There are a couple of names, but Fulham, I don't think they're going to attract the top-level manager they'd hoped for.

"Marco Silva is probably at the top of the tree in terms of some of their aspirations, and he's done very well for them. So I think they might be just doing the best they can to keep him and give him one more season."

Who else could snap Marco Silva up this summer?
It is not just Benfica that are lining up a move for the 48-year-old manager, with several clubs across the Premier League being long-time admirers of his talents.

Mick Brown told Football Insider that Silva could become Crystal Palace's next boss, as Oliver Glasner is set to depart Selhurst Park at the end of his contract with the Eagles.

Manchester United and Tottenham have both been linked with the manager in previous seasons, but both have made new decisions on their current bosses, so a move for Silva would be unlikely.

Fulham supporters have long feared their talented manager leaving, though, so the rumours circulating around Craven Cottage will feel no different this time around.

Marco Silva agrees to replace Jose Mourinho at Benfica despite Fulham doubling Portuguese side's offer

Fulham manager Marco Silva is on the verge of leaving the Premier League side to take over at Benfica. The Portuguese tactician has reportedly reached a verbal agreement to succeed Jose Mourinho, despite Fulham offering him a significantly more lucrative contract to stay at Craven Cottage. Silva's imminent departure marks the end of a successful spell in London.

Benfica secure Silva despite lucrative Fulham offer
According to talkSPORT, Silva has reached a verbal agreement to become the new manager of Benfica, succeeding the Real Madrid-bound Jose Mourinho. The Portuguese giants turned their attention to the 48-year-old after their primary target, Ruben Amorim, proved reluctant to accept the position.

Silva is already taking steps towards this move, reportedly building a house close to Lisbon. Fulham have made a desperate attempt to retain their manager by offering him a three-year contract worth an impressive £8 million a year. However, this proposal seems to have been rejected, with Benfica offering a significantly lower salary of around £4m a year to secure his services as his current deal expires at the end of June.

A successful London tenure nears its conclusion
Fulham are currently waiting for formal communication from their manager regarding his desire to leave. Silva joined the London side in July 2021 following their Championship relegation and has enjoyed a highly successful tenure, guiding them to an instant Premier League return. Since then, the club have established themselves in the top flight, achieving a record tally of 54 points in the 2024-25 campaign while reaching a Carabao Cup semi-final.

Despite a previous statement by Fulham vice chairman Tony Khan in February that he thinks Silva will be at the club for "a long time", a departure looks inevitable following his recent end of season debrief with the coaching staff.

Mourinho returns to Real Madrid amid severe club crisis
Mourinho is departing Benfica to embark on his second spell at Real Madrid, joining a club currently engulfed in a severe crisis. The Spanish giants have endured a turbulent period, failing to win any major trophies over the last two seasons. Consequently, Real Madrid have changed three managers during this chaotic timeframe. Carlo Ancelotti left at the end of the 2024=25 campaign, paving the way for Xabi Alonso. However, Alonso was sacked after just half a season in charge. Alvaro Arbeloa then took over as caretaker manager, but he has now stepped down, allowing Mourinho to officially begin his highly anticipated second era at the Bernabeu.

What next for Silva and Fulham?
A return to Portugal would see Silva manage in the Primeira Liga for the first time in 11 years. His immediate task at Benfica will be guiding them through the Europa League second qualifying round to reach the league phase. Meanwhile, Fulham must quickly begin their search for a new head coach ahead of a crucial pre-season, as they look to build upon their recent top-flight stability.

As per the new rule, a Turkish club can't have more than 14 foreign players in their squad, of which four players must be born on or after January 2023.

Can't start them too young in the modern era, I guess.
