Title: NFR England
Post by: Ludlow Richard on June 27, 2026, 11:13:31 PM
This post probably won't age well tonight. But so far this is a dreadful performance by England (shades of Fulham against teams from lower divisions in cups) and quite how anyone can see this team going deep in the tournament is beyond me.

Konsa looks a liability.

Harry Kane!

Rashford is one player who's stood out for me tonight. Great skill and delivery.

Can't understand why Barca chose Gordon over Rashford.

I always live in hope of seeing us win another WC but our defending tells me we will be lucky to go beyond the Q finals!

I maintain that not taking Maguire was correct due to his problematic ego, but on these games it's hard not to see him as a better option than Konsa.

I don't get it, maybe someone can explain.

I look at the England roster and it's loaded with great players.  Really great players.  (I think I might have posted the same 4 years ago)
Why does this team seem to underperform in the World Cup?  I look at this roster and past rosters, and would say this team should be in the quarters/finals every WC.  Why does this team not perform to level?  Inquiring minds want to know..........

With all respect to your opinion, they are not GREAT players. Half of the best players were left at home, Maguire, Trent, Palmer, Foden, Bowen, Gibbs-White, while 36 year-old Jordan Henderson is considered better.

Ecuador will knock England out. Because the FA wanted a German manager to upset the genuine England fans who they deem jingoistic or racist. I think he does want to win but he's a mercenary, a big contract with no end results.

We have no threat at corners coz of no Maguire. We have no free kick taker coz of no Trent. The German left them out and England look poor because of it. He plays left footers on the right wing, righties on the left. The German is basically a dopey manager not a saboteur as I thought before.

Oh come off it. Most national teams have hired or are hiring foreign managers. If you honestly think Tuchel is trying to sabotage England then I'll have what you're smoking. If that was his intention then he might as well say goodbye to his career.

I did say he may NOT be a saboteur but the Fulham forum brain power has diminished over time.

Mr Bateman may I suggest that your disparaging remarks towards others are unnecessary and causes bad feelings
We all would like to get our point over and the best way is to be cordial and respectful, and you may even feel a lot better for it.

Going back to the subject in hand. Last night one of the pundits mentioned what I  was going to say.
That I feel the reason for the squad Tuchell chose is based around a system of play which incorporates a counter attacking method.
This only works efficiently when playing the bigger teams as they will be coming forward with an attacking system which will then show the best of England with the wider open spaces to reap rewards.
Whereas the smaller teams for want of a better word like Ghana set themselves up with two banks of four or even five at the back with a sweeper to stifle England with a very low block.
That sets themselves up to counter attack England, hence why we found it frustrating.
That is why playing the bigger teams will bear fruit and see England flourish with this system of play, and therefore we should see the real England, that is my hope anyway.

Getting back to the football.....
IMO there are multiple issue
First our players aren't as good as their hype. With the exception of Bellingham and kane, who are genuinely exceptional, the rest are pretty average. Rice, is possibly the only other class act but that is about it.

Second, we have a manager who has made the same errors as those before him taking unfit players to a tournament and hoping it will be ok. Reece James is a top player but a sick note...two poor performances and a no show with doubt for the next game, being the obvious example.

Three games and three different, very different back fours. You absolutely need a stable back line if you want any chance of winning. How did it take so long to realise Spence needed to be RB last night and that only happened through another injury....and with that change things improved.

Bellingham has to play deeper as he did last night so he can show his class, having him pressed so high up dilutes his effectiveness.

Trent and Maguire should be in the squad, that much is obvious.

And just a personal thing, I don't get the love in with Anderson. I thought he was poor last night but the media seemed to be gushing over him.  He was slow in possession, poor choice of passes, lost possession too easily, I heard he made a lot of tackles, I didn't notice that they were so impressive. I saw kane and Bellingham track back and make important blocks.
I know this is just opinion but i don't get it and wonder why man city are willing to cough up so much.

It might sound strange but I have no recollection of Rogers playing last night...perhaps I mixed him up with Bellingham.
