Title: NFR Raúl looking like we should have signed him for another year
Post by: OtherHodgson on July 06, 2026, 02:50:20 AM
Two outstanding headers kept out by equally good saves so far!

COYW!

Given decent service he showed what he can do. But he still only scored from the spot.

We have an average championship forward line so far.

I think he'll be disappointed he only scored a penalty. At least 2 presentable chances not taken and a couple of half chances. At this level, you're clinical or you're knocked out. He'll always be a cult hero but I do hope we can find a more clinical striker.

Plenty who look like scoring, we need some that actually score

Not sure about that, but after watching him play 100+ minutes at altitude, I'm wondering why last season we kept subbing him off.

Possibly his last ever game in a Mexico shirt, in front of that crowd, at a home world cup to get his nation into the quarter finals of the World Cup.
What did people expect? Him to jog around and look unbothered?

Jimenez was quality yesterday .. I think we definitely could have got another year out of him but at 35 and being one of our top earners it was probably best to move on

Knockout football playing for your country will always make you elevate your game. The fact is he scored 4 goals from open play last season and we need better moving forward, especially with him on a 6 figure weekly salary and turning 36 next season

If wolves get good service into him I think he will be championship top goal scorer but I think he will struggle at the start of the season and come good

If you're confident with Muniz and JKA to spearhead the attack, good on you.

I was adamant we should of kept him at least one more season on the basis that we had no one anywhere near as good as him as backup and that is still the case currently. He was more important than renewing Harry Wilson. I suppose you have to move on and I can see this also from Club perspective though giving Cairney a new deal halfway through last season and not Jiminez a bit of a head scratcher?
We have to move on.
Be interesting how Wolves use him next season? as much of a good centre forward he is he is not getting any younger and there are a lot of 3 games a week in Championship.

We don't know they will be spearheading the attack.

I would be shocked if they are the only striker options we have come the end of the window

have said it many times but...
Raul, good as he still can be in moments, and as good as he is at penalties. Should not be our starting striker going forwards, he isn't getting younger, quicker or more mobile. Therefore, his wages were simply untenable for a backup striker when we have so many other positions to cover including bringing in a main striker.

With SCR as tight as it is for a club like us, we can't afford Raul as potentially third option on 100k a week, or even if he dropped to 70k per week.

If you had him on 40k per week maybe but really - the right thing for his career and legacy was 100% to return to wolves and then head home. Happy for him, a great guy and a talent for sure. But we gotta move on eventually and that time is now

Yes, Jimenez looked good in this game.  Should we have signed for another season?  No.

Is that something to do with playing or not playing at altitude?
