Title: Harry Kane
Post by: sarnian on July 16, 2026, 08:55:01 AM
First England game I have watched this World Cup. Can somebody please explain to me what was Harry Kane supposed to be doing on the pitch as I have no idea.

Two semi finals both won by mental attitude. France had most talented squad but had no self belief and froze, England were happy to scrape a one nil or even a penalty shoot out, Argentina just wanted to win the game regardless.

Hopefully that's his last game for England , where was he last night ? A captain should be leading by example not disappearing!

He was quite poor but he is the type of player who picks up goals from others mistakes. They didn't make any

Like the frequent criticisms of Raul, you have to factor in the amount of service a striker gets. Yesterday, very little.

He certainly didn't play as a striker last night !

No criticism of Kane from me. Where was the supply from out wide? Rice was a shadow of himself. Burnt out from a long season, injury and sickness. That result was totally on Tuchel. I feel sorry for the players because the manager let them down from the moment we took the lead.

Kane must of been very unwell,
why else would Tuchel put him in Quarantine.

I cannot understand the criticism of Kane, what sort of service did he get, change of tactics changed the game.

My criticism of Kane is much the same as it is in most of the semi-final or final defeats we suffer- he doesn't do anything.

Yes, he scores goals, and important ones, when we are winning, but in a losing team with no creative output he is drifting slowly around in midfield. The ball gets passed across his front, he drifts slowly in the direction of the player who has the ball. Not close enough or fast enough to put any pressure on him, but a gentle meander in the general direction. Then the ball gets passed across the other way, and he gently drifts back that way.
At one point the Argentinians were playing triangles around him, and he was almost motionless.

Last night, when England were under the cosh (self imposed) he was totally anonymous, save for one brief spurt of energy when he actually tried to chase the ball down and the opposition fired off a hasty pass as a result. Why was he not left standing on the half way line? He could stand there motionless and the Argentinians would have to have at least one of their players back, covering him. Probably two.

But no, leave him anonymous in midfield, thirty yards out, bothering nobody.

Kane seems to do very well at Bayern and very well at spurs.
Tuchels useless tactics are too lame.

Sorry but attitude had nothing to do with it, there was no lack of effort. It was purely down to tactics, same with France.

Waiting for Jay to enter this chat as a few of us are slugging it out on a certain discord server.......

For what its worth, its a manager problem, not a Kane problem. He's an incredible goalscorer, and pinger of the ball, but for me, spends too much time in the wrong areas of the pitch which, by design, I think limits sides success in major tournaments both domestically, and internationally. It's ultra effective against mid to low opposition, and unsuccessful against elite opposition.

But again.....its a manager problem. Kane is a elite, one of the best goalscorers.

He spends time in the wrong areas because he has to come back to try and get the ball as it doesn't get to him very often when he is up top.

Sorry Alfie, I disagree, if this was the case, the manager would and should be stepping in to sub him for not sticking to tactics. Kane dropping back is co-ordinated. Whilst Rice was off it, Anderson, I feel, has been exceptional in every game. We have the players now who can do what Kane does (in midfield and defence) but we still do it.

Each to their own as I've been fairly abused over the discord server for suggesting adopting tactics like this isn't successful at elite levels. Kanes a great goalscorer. I just wish we'd adopt him more to cater to it.

Can't believe the criticism of Kane.  Great player, didn't get much service, didn't get much help from his mates.  He launched the deep ball that produced their goal.  Might have to also credit the defense for bottling him up and not letting him get chances to have a go.  Anyway, his inability to shine in this game not the reason England went down.

Would've helped if he tried instead of strolling around the pitch looking bored , get rid asap !

Funny that, I guess we all have our own views of how this game and player turned out.....
